Welcome to Mission! On behalf of the District of Mission, I am pleased to welcome you to our beautiful community. Here on the north bank of the Fraser River, you will find both friendly, small-town hospitality and a vibrant business sector — a combination unique in the Lower Mainland. There is so much to do here — wonderful outdoor activities like hiking, golfing, world-class sturgeon and salmon fishing and so much more. Mission is also home to numerous festivals and events which take place throughout the year, including the Mission Folk Music Festival, Old Car Sunday, Fraser Valley

Bald Eagle Festival, and the Candlelight Parade to name just a few of the many community-driven events — all entertaining — all well worth the time! We are a growing community in large part because Mission offers both residents and visitors experiences and opportunities they can only find here. Our residents are proud to call Mission home. Please allow me to extend an open invitation to every visitor to Mission to explore and experience our community. You are welcome here … enjoy your visit!

Mission has an interesting and storied history Mission is home to the oldest dwelling in British Columbia, the first and only armed train robbery in Canada and the 100 Mile Challenge television show. Located along the banks of the Fraser River, the town was named for the mission built by the Oblates of the Immaculate Mary in 1861. The city grew rapidly throughout the latter half of the 1800s, with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886. In 1891, Mission became home to the first railway crossing linking British Columbia and the United States. On Sept. 10, 1904 the notorious Bill Miner and two accomplices robbed a CPR train as it left Mission.

The oldest known dwelling site in B.C. is Xa:ytem, which remains an important landmark celebrating the heritage of the Sto:lo people, whose ancestors inhabited the area 9,000 years ago. Settlements, and industries like forestry and agriculture, thrived through the next 100 years, with a

hiccup in 1948, when the Fraser River flooded the entire area, including the downtown which was then located on the waterfront. The city moved its downtown core to its current location on higher ground, and has continued to grow in population, business and diversity ever since.

Come and experience the quality of the Clarke Mission’s most popular theatre is the venue for most of the concerts, plays, dance and speakers every year. The Clarke Foundation Theatre is owned and operated by the Mission Public School District, and it is definitely the hub for performing arts in the community. A 700-seat proscenium theatre facility, with one of the friendliest and most efficient technical staff in

the business, it has played host to some of Canada’s finest talent. The Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver make a stop with professional theatre programming three times a year, major Canadian dance companies present the best in contemporary and classical dance, and musicians 54/40, Randy Bachman, and Bruce Cockburn have all performed on the Clarke stage. Community groups and school productions also utilize the theatre

and staff and perform annual shows that draw thousands of audience members. The theatre is also home to the locally established Rising Star Dance Competition in April and thousands of young performers vie for impressive prize money and the prestige of competing in a tough field. The Clarke Theatre is located at 33700 Prentis Ave. For more information call 604-820-3961 or visit www.heritageparkcentre.com

Take a tour of National Historic Site of Canada The 1912 Power House at Stave Falls began working again in 2002, this time generating visitors rather than electricity. The National Historic Site of Canada remains similar to the way it was first built, and is now a first-class interpretive centre.

Your visit will start in the theatre, where the video Rain introduces you to hydro electricity. Then there is Electrica, a handson area, where visitors are encouraged to explore electricity and to think

about B.C.’s renewable and non-renewable resources, hydroelectric generation, human and natural heritage, and conservation. Then a trip through the Power House where the awesome turbines and generators, hundred year old equipment and original tools still remain and can be viewed up close. In the Historic Gallery, archival photos and artifacts encourage visitors to appreciate the hardships and effort to build the Power House and hear the stories of intolerable mosquitoes and no safety equipment. The Power House offers pre-booked guided tours, a teacher resource guide to support the Grades 4 to 7 and a nearby recreation area which offers great opportunities to explore the natural environment. Enjoy and experience first-hand the history, power and place that is Stave Falls. For information visit www.bchydro.com/ recreation, call 604-462-1222 or e-mail stavefalls@bchydro.com

Support the merchants who support Mission In recent years we’ve been hearing more and more about “shopping local.” What does it mean and why do it? Shopping local means buying from stores owned and operated by people who live in your community, and there are many good reasons to shop in Mission. First there is the selection; local stores are more likely to carry special and unusual goods that you just can’t get from major retailers. It’s a great way to find unique items, and come away with something that will have your friends asking, “Where did you get that?” Second, because local stores tend to be more specialized the owners and staff are incredibly knowledgeable. In many cases they’ve chosen what to stock and can answer your questions in greater detail. Local businesses are good for the community. Money spent here stays. As well, staying close to home is good for the environment and reduces car use, and small businesses generate jobs. Local stores give communities a sense of individuality and character you won’t get elsewhere. Vibrant downtowns are the heart of many communities, and by shopping local you can support them. Improving your community while buying great things from knowledgeable people.

several specialty stores featuring new treasures and collectibles. • The Junction on London Avenue includes several major specialty stores, restaurants and a multiplex movie theatre. • Along the Lougheed Highway, just west of downtown, there are a number of shopping plazas, fast food and franchise

Let the train connect you to the Lower Mainland The West Coast Express (WCE) is the commuter service that connects Mission with downtown Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland. A one-way trip on the line takes approximately 75 minutes, and emphasis is placed on passenger comfort. Available in downtown Mission, train service operates Monday to Friday during peak commuter times. WCE also operates a TrainBus service which runs Monday to

Friday outside commuter hours. The eight stations along the route are Mission, Port Haney, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam Central, Port Moody, and Waterfront Station in Vancouver. WCE is operated by TransLink, the Metro Vancouver transportation authority operating the SkyTrain, Seabus and other public transit services in the Lower Mainland. The Mission station is located on the south side of North Railway

Avenue, between Welton and Horne. The station platform is connected to the parking area by an overhead walkway. WCE offers many additional services including a Santa Train, an annual special train which offers valley residents access to Vancouver by donating a new unused toy to the Christmas Bureau. Join the fun and bear witness to a world-class phenomenon that attracted thousands of eagles to the Harrison and Fraser Rivers last fall. and gorging themselves on the abundant spawning salmon along the river’s edge. The festival offers activities at various venues from Mission to Harrison Mills and now attracts visitors from not only B.C. but across Canada, the U.S. and beyond. Mission best enjoyed with a four-legged friend Few individuals enjoy travelling as much as our pets – if only because they hate to be left behind. And the traveller who brings along his or her furry companion will find that Mission has the amenities to make their stay completely comfortable – even a fine hotel that doesn’t mind taking pets. There are many wild spaces where you can let your canine friend get together with other four-legged pals, but there are also ideal locations within the residential district that are great for this purpose. Centennial Park, located between 11 Avenue and Taulbut Street, is an enormous space with beautiful grass and old

growth trees. The gentle hills and ample running room provide a great space for your four-legged friends to explore. There is a new off-leash portion of the park located in the northern area. Dog bag dispensers are available on-site. Ogle Park may be smaller, but it’s no less ideal. Located at Badger Avenue and Beaver Drive, Ogle Park is fenced, has a play structure for kids and also has dog bag dispensers on-site. There is a place to lodge where your animals are welcome. The Best Western Mission City Lodge is also one of a few pet-friendly hotels in the Fraser Valley, making it an ideal place to stay while travelling with furry friends.

Experience a high-speed rush at raceway park Mission has one of the fastest drag strips in all of Western Canada and the U.S. Northwest. Hundreds of drivers and thousands of fans converge on Mission Raceway Park (MRP) throughout the summer for some speed. Putting on a good show for participants and spectators has earned MRP the Track of the Year title for the Northwest Division eight times. The low elevation (24 feet above sea level) boosts horsepower, making it one of the fastest quarter mile strips on the professional circuit. The action gets underway this year May 25-27, as the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) brings high-calibre drag racing to town for the B.C. Nationals. Drag racing is the big draw,

but MRP has evolved into a first-class facility for all types of auto sports, including road racing as well as motorcycle road racing, motocross and karting. Owned and operated by the non-profit B.C. Custom Car Association, the drag strip provides safe, controlled racing conditions for those who range from casual hobbyists to internationally-ranked professionals. Mission’s beauty blooms with national awards The community earned five out of five blooms in both provincial and national competition in 2011 “People, plants and pride… growing together” is the essence of the Communities in Bloom (CiB) program, an initiative in towns and cities across Canada work to

beautify homes, businesses and public places through horticulture, tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaping and floral displays. Members of Mission’s CiB Society work hard all year to promote, build, and maintain a town we are proud to call home. We offer a 15 category local “let’s participate” event every spring, and present awards to

winners when the national judges visit Mission. We invite you to enjoy our downtown, visit our tidy parks, heritage sites, see our Edwardian garden at the library, and hike on our well-maintained trails. For more information about Communities in Bloom visit www.mission.ca/cinb

Best sturgeon fishing in the world awaits you Whatever species you choose to take on, Mission’s waterways, especially the Fraser, will make all your angling dreams come true Anglers can find some spectacular fishing in the Fraser and surrounding rivers near Mission. Mission’s sturgeon fishery is oneof-a-kind, and local fishing guides can give even seasoned anglers a new experience. The Fraser is considered one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world today, and in any given year 15 to 30 million salmon will pass Mission. When salmon are migrating, fishermen line sand bars on a sunny weekend enjoying the outdoor experience. Mission has been labelled the Sturgeon Capital of the World for good reason. During spring, summer and fall, you can stand on the dike from Harbour Park to Dewdney Slough and watch anglers catch monster sturgeon. Although late summer through to early winter is best for fishing, sturgeon can be caught year-round if you learn a little about feeding patterns and migration routes.

During summer months there are plenty of salmon to fish for including sockeye and chinook. Although you can fish near Mission for salmon, the best spots are upriver from the mouth of the Sumas River and further east towards Hope. Gravel bars located along the river banks are the best location, so all you need to do is find access routes to these areas. You can find good information at the Mission Chamber of Commerce. Salmon migrations begin in the Fraser River as early as April. Although the good fishing doesn’t really get going until mid-July, you can catch salmon on the Fraser just

about year-round. Some of the best fishing is between mid-July to mid-November. You can target all five species of salmon using many methods. Anglers from around the world now consider the Fraser River one of the top angling destinations in the world, so Mission residents are fortunate to have this worldclass fishery in their backyards.

Chinook salmon, July 15 to Oct 15 Chinook are the largest salmon, tipping the scales at 50 pounds and more, and they run every year. They have two runs, one in July that lasts until August, and a fall run that goes from September until November. Most local anglers and guides fish for chinook between Mission and Chilliwack, although you can catch them all the way up to Hope and beyond. Mission 2012 • www.mission.ca

Pink salmon (mid-August to mid-October) Pink salmon return to the Fraser every second year on odd years, and they will run again in 2013. Pinks are the smallest salmon, averaging between three and five pounds, but they are also the most plentiful, returning in huge numbers often in the 10’s of millions. Sheer numbers alone make them easy to hook, but the fiesty fish are not so easy to land.

Coho and chum (late September to late November) Coho and chum begin their annual return to the Fraser around mid-to-late August. The run really gets going in mid-September for those anglers fishing the lower river. The upper river above

Chilliwack produces fish all the way through until mid-to-late November. This fishery is one of our most consistent fisheries on the Fraser and can offer some incredible angling opportunities.

Sockeye salmon (mid-July to mid-September) Sockeye salmon is one of the most popular freshwater fisheries, but the size of the runs and angling opportunities have become difficult to predict. They will be running again in 2012.

Kilby as it looked 100 years ago in Harrison Mills The Kilby Historic Site is the perfect place for a trip down memory lane. Kilby General Store is all that remains of the original town of Harrison Mills, a oncebustling community. The 100-year-old store was the hub of the town, serving as the general supply store, post office, gas station, hotel and meeting place. With sawmills and train stations close by, the store catered to everyone from locals to vacationers. Connecting boardwalks were built around town because Harrison Mills suffered from many floods. Kilby General Store still has its boardwalks intact, a prominent feature of this historic site. Thomas Kilby, who was born in England in 1868 and

Take a day trip and explore all Mission’s locales Mission may look like a small town, but the district is beautiful and vast. From Silverdale in the west to Deroche in the east, it is a municipality made up of smaller communities, each with distinct characteristics. The following are some of the unique corners outside the city centre that make up Mission.

Steelhead Steelhead, located in northern Mission, was first inhabited in the early 1900s. There are two stories about how the community received its name. Some believe the area is named after the salmon that used to go up the Stave River, and others say it was named after a railway that was supposed to be built in the area. Today, the area is home to many working professionals who enjoy the quiet, natural setting and most

of Mission’s municipal forest. There are many worthwhile hiking trails here.

Southwest Mission There are two communities known as Silverdale and Silverhill in this part of Mission. Both have a community hall which used to be the gathering place for dances, fundraisers and local meetings. Silverhill was mostly known as a Swedish settlement in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the families who started the community still live here today. The Donatelli family came from Italy and homesteaded 160 acres in the 1890s. Many descendants from the two Donatelli brothers who first came to Mission, still live on parts of the original property in Silverdale. If you are in this area, be sure to visit Hayward Lake, a popular recreation site for families throughout the year. Go for a picnic and swim during the summer. Or

you can hike all, or a section of, the 18 km loop trail any time.

McConnell Creek Settlement first came to McConnell Creek in the late 1800s. It was a logging community, and there were many small mills, which attracted workers. McConnell Creek, located about six miles northeast of Mission, was named after a logger named Jack McConnell. Early settlers built their homes out of the plentiful cedar. Louis Carrat came to the area in 1894 and homesteaded 360 acres. On his land he built a magnificent garden around three sets of waterfalls, which is now known as Cascade Falls. Today, the scenic Cascade Falls attracts visitors and locals alike. At the end of Sylvester Road, which leads to McConnell Creek, is a logging road and access to lakes and recreational area for ATVers, dirt bikers and hikers. Mission 2012 • www.mission.ca

Mission municipal forest offers beautiful views The District of Mission is fortunate to have over 10,000 hectares of forested lands in which to recreate. In 1958, the provincial government granted Tree Farm Licence 26 to manage the forest resources. The economic and social benefits come from community stability generated by steady local employment and revenue, control of the local forest resources, and providing forest recreation and educational opportunities. The municipal forest is located north of downtown Mission, accessible via several locations along Dewdney Trunk Road. Over half of the municipal forest lies on the western shores of Stave Lake. It offers over 11 trails and areas of varying degrees of difficulty, length and type. All trails can

accommodate hiking but there are additional non-motorized, multi-use trails on which you can ride horses or mountain bikes. This spectacular backdoor playground features locations that offer stunning vistas such as Mt. Baker, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Mt. Robie Reid, Golden Ears Mountains and the beautiful Stave Lake. There are also amazing waterfalls, serene small lakes, and pockets of accessible old-growth forests. Trail information is in the Mission Parks and Trails Guide available from the Chamber of Commerce or at www.mission.ca/ live/municipal-forest/forest-trailsrecreation-areas/trails. The District of Mission is working diligently towards providing future recreation opportunities and infrastructure on the west side of

Stave Lake in the Interpretive Forest. The vision is to transform this beautiful region into a compelling destination for residents and visitors alike, and provide positive forest experiences. This involves the development of partnerships with local First Nations communities, and identifying the right partners to create viable commercial recreation and tourism ventures, while also creating learning opportunities and multi-user access to a working community forest. The district values input it receives and if you have any ideas or comments you would like to share, please send them attention Forestry Department to info@mission.ca

A spiritual experience awaits you in Mission In 1892, the first and largest Marian shrine was erected in B.C. The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes was built on a rock promontory in the upper reaches of St. Mary’s Mission and Residential School. A reconstruction of the Grotto was completed in 1997 and still every year, thousands of people gather in Fraser River Heritage Park for the annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of

2

Lourdes Grotto. The trek this year happens Aug. 18. Westminster Abbey attracts thousands of visitors each year to its serene perch high above the Fraser Valley, just northeast of downtown Mission. A dome of coloured glass rises 60 feet above the altar, allowing shafts of light to stream down into the church. In addition to the Abbey, The

Seminary of Christ the King accommodates students who study to become secular priests. Mass is sung at 10 a.m. on Sunday and 6:30 a.m. weekdays. There are dozens of churches of different faiths in Mission, so there is always a place to worship here. For a full listing of churches in Mission, please visit www.mission.ca
