We expect our graduates to shape a changing world.
Our innovative approach to teaching and learning: Competency-based Mastery Learning - We prioritize process over product and growth over grades. Our students develop skills in core competencies they will need to live meaningful and productive lives. Interdisciplinary Courses - We offer Advanced Interdisciplinary Seminars where students address timeless questions while working to understand and solve today’s pressing problems. Authentic, Project-based Assessment - We challenge students to “show what they know” through projects and Demonstrations of Learning, instead of traditional tests and exams. Experiential Education - Our curriculum extends beyond our campus in Farmington. We develop global intensive courses that include international travel for all students. Our professional experience courses place students in the working world.
We are not the typical triple threat boarding school. While most boarding schools require faculty to teach, coach, and live in the dorm, we do things differently in Farmington. As a residential community, all faculty members are expected to participate in the life of the community, but Porter’s faculty don’t live in student dorms! They reside in school-owned houses and apartments adjacent to our campus, and the dorms are staffed by a separate residential life faculty. Our focus is classroom teaching. Faculty teach only two classes per trimester and co-curricular responsibilities are aligned with their passions and interests.
A teaching and learning structure that promotes focus and balance.
