Well we are in to our 3rd Pilot Month this year, and the excitement is building as we are getting into our busy season with lots of things to do. Yes, I know with lots of opportunities available to us, it can get a little crazy but think of the chances we have to share Pilot and our love of service to so many and maybe some of those we share with might be interested in joining our efforts and becoming a member.

Membership - Lisa Anderson

We may be smaller than we have been in the previous years,

Don't forget our NE Region Lt. Governor, margaret Smith from the Port of Jacksonville Pilot Club joining us this month as well as our Guest Speaker from Hospice. I am sure they will both

Pilot Club of Ocala - 1945-1955 ……that Ocala Pilots literally danced into the second decade of the Pilot history. While little is said about how they earned the money, the Christmas Dances drew in approximately $10,000 during this period. The dances were held in the Ball Room of the Marion Hotel, which back then was the jewel of Ocala's social life, or the City Auditorium. Space makes it impossible to list everything these incredibly active ladies did so this is a selective list. The War Bond drive, by then called Victory Bonds, continued with the help of an organization called Trianon. The combined effort raised $135,268.75, far above the $50,000 goal. During this period they also voted to raise the FSU Scholarship for Women to reach a goal of $1000 which was repayable by the recipients, making it "self sustaining". The real work began in 1947 with the project to construct a model Sight Conservation School Room at the Ocala Grammar School. A model of the room was later made and taken for display at the PI Convention and as a window display in down town Ocala. Along with work, Pilots also had fun. If Ocala Breeders Association held an event such as the Brahman Breeders Show, Pilots were there dressed in cowgirl attire presenting a comical skit. At one time they managed the Hoosegow jailing for those not dressed in the proper attire. This included some clueless Bostonians who took it in stride. A fun project for Pilot was a "Dog Mixer" which financed a much needed incubator for the Hospital. Pilot also refurbished a Hospital Ward at the cost of $690.20. By 1950 membership had grown to 36 members. Members worked together to create care packages to be sent overseas to war torn France. Through an error the French City of Vomoutiers was unfortunately bombed by the US Air Force. Pilot International adopted a project to send relief. Ocala responded by creating care packages including such items as clothing, household and necessities to be sent. They also helped with the Dedication of the War Memorial Pool and financing baskets and stands at the pool. On October 11, 1951 they Chartered Pilot Teens at Ocala High School with the motto "Leadership and Service". By this time the Little Girl Scout House was in need of repair and Pilot responded with a new roof and flooring at the cost of $404.02. A fun item from 1944-1945….. There was a Hobby Display Party at which a tiny baby girl was voted "Most Admired". Some of us will remember the little one's Mama as Jessie Ohlinger, who remained a member of Pilot until her death in 2004. The little one that went on to also become a Pilot was Gaye Cheshire who just recently resigned for health reasons this past year.
