Bypassing National 5 Maths Fast tracking to Higher

Why? • Pupils are measured on their end point – Higher. • Pupils are working at Level 3 & 4 in S1. • Pupils will not be ‘treading water’ in Maths – they will be challenged. • Pupils will have a deeper understanding of their Maths. • Pupils will be more confident in their Maths. • Less pressure and stress in S4.

What will be involved? • The pupils would start preparation for N5 in S2 & S3. • Pupils would bank all the N5 assessments as security & fall back. • All pupils will do N5 Numeracy and be certificated in S4. • Pupils would start Higher in Nov S4 and sit the final exam at the end of S5.

• Pupils would have 2 years to do the Higher course and cover the materials in depth. • From our Fast Tracking & Early Presentation in previous years leads to more Grade A & B passes.

Monitoring • N5 prelim in Sept of S4. • To stop the pupils taking their ‘foot of the accelerator ‘ throughout S4 there would be department tracking as well as whole school. • Pupils will do a mini Higher prelim in June of S4. • Assessments throughout the Higher Course.

• At points throughout the process pupils can move back to the traditional route e.g. N5 in S4. • Key points would be Feb S3, end of S3 and Nov of S4 to look at pupils progress with the course. • There will be clear guidance to pupils on how they can improve .
