Senior Phase Curriculum

Parent Information Evening 13th December 2016


Aims of our Information Evening  Parents/carers to understand  the priorities for our Senior Phase curriculum  the limitations of our Senior Phase curriculum  the anticipated benefits of our planned changes

 To provide opportunities for parent/carer feedback on the

above Anticipated finish 8.15pm


Context


National Expectations: NIF • Improvement in

attainment, particularly in literacy and

numeracy;

• Closing the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged children; • Improvement in young people’s

health and

wellbeing; and • Improvement in employability skills and sustained, positive

school leaver destinations for all young people.


Context  Curriculum – the totality of the learning experiences

within the school  LHS is committed to the development of a curriculum that:  Improves the quality and relevance of the school experience  Increases the range of opportunities on offer  Supports young people to develop an excellent attainment

profile and supports the move to a positive destination

Current Senior Phase Model  S4  7 Subjects x 4 periods  Core PE x 2 periods  Core RME x1 period  Core PSE x 1 period  Maths and English Compulsory  5 others selected from a column structure – coursing via Guidance Staff

 S5/6  6 period model  S5 – 5 subjects x 6 periods + Study/RME x1, PSE x1  S6 – 24 periods of subjects (dependent on levels)+ PSE x 1 Interest Group x 1  No compulsory subjects, Maths and English spread across columns – coursing

via Guidance Staff


What’s the problem with our current model?  Not a huge amount really!

However,  It’s inefficient  Too few options of courses relating to  Personal Achievement  Skills for Work – focused on labour market intelligence  Leadership  A few mixed N5/Higher classes  Not fully supporting all those returning to S5/6

All N3/4/5 courses across 7 columns on a 7x4 period model. All Highers across 5 columns on a 5x6 period model. The '5th and 6th' periods for Higher comes from the 'Choice F and G' columns. No compulsory PE/RME in S5/S6.

For S5/6 students with fewer than 5 Highers there would be a mixture of Wider Achievement and/or Study Classes.
