NEW CORN PALACE DESIGN RECALLS THE PAST Although the World’s Only Corn Palace dates back to 1892, it transforms itself each fall — with real corn.
Some 275,000 colorful ears or corn are carefully sliced and nailed into place on the murals that adorn the building. It’s all done by hand, a folk art form that is all but lost, but not here. Local farmers plant 12 different colors of corn in carefully separated plots to ensure plants don’t cross-pollinate and dilute the purity of the colors. Local artist Cherie Ramsdell composes new murals. Bundles of ryegrass and sour dock, a hearty prairie plant, are stapled to the frames.
The first Mitchell Corn Palace was part of a late 19th century race by farming communities to make names for themselves, promote their products and draw curious visitors. Aberdeen had the Grain Palace, Rapid City the Alfalfa Palace. Rod Evans, who wrote “Palaces on the Prairie,” found records of 34 palaces in 24 towns across the Midwest. All are gone, except for the World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell.

EDUCATION CENTER
A cure for stir-crazy kids
After spending time in the car, kids need to let off a little steam. There’s a great place at the World’s Only Corn Palace where they can do just that. The Corn Palace Education Center is part fun zone and part corn museum. It’s next to the Corn Palace balcony. Admission is free. “The idea is to get kids more involved,” said Scott Schmidt, Corn Palace Director. Young visitors will likely find a sandbox of corn kernels instead of sand, kid-sized tractors to drive, and perhaps an indoor corn maze. In another part of the Corn Palace, kids will find a combine they can pretend they are driving and a tractor stationed inside the lobby. *Open Summer Season 604 N. MITCHELL PREHISTORIC INDIAN VILLAGE
More than a century after its 1910 discovery by a student from Dakota Wesleyan University, the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is still revealing new clues about the lives of the people who lived on this site 1,100 years ago.
As a National Historic Landmark, it has been called one of the most significant archeological sites of the Northern Great Plains. Boehnen Memorial Museum Inside the Boehnen Memorial Museum, you will see a reconstructed earthen lodge and some of the 1.5 million artifacts that have been recovered. A live-interactive excavation site, exhibits, and children’s activities are also available. Children can dig for a free arrowhead and watch a demonstration on how to throw a spear using an atlatl. Parents can shop some of the finest Native American items such as indigenous and regional art, jewelry and pottery books. Thomsen Center Archeodome A new 2017 exhibit in the Archeodome showcases some of the artifacts that have been excavated since 2011. Also, in summer you can watch as the students from the University of Exeter, England, excavate more items inside the Archeodome.

MCGOVERN LIBRARY It’s fitting that McGovern Library is on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. Before the author and activist served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, he was a student and later a professor at the university. Sen. McGovern was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972. He lost to incumbent Richard Nixon in an emotionally charged era remembered for the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation in 1974.
also made less public, more far-reaching contributions. He is perhaps best remembered for his commitment to ending world hunger, a cause commemorated at the museum. His legacy of leadership lives on through the McGovern Center for Leadership & Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University. The library archives and collections include McGovern memorabilia, documents, photographs, and the Senator’s personal book collection. The McGovern’s Museum displays many exhibits that tell the story of McGovern’s life as a World War II bomber pilot, college professor, Democratic organizer, U.S. Representative and Senator, director of Food for Peace under President John F. Kennedy, and ambassador to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. In 2001, he was appointed the first U.N. global ambassador on hunger. Many of the stories are told in audio and video displays narrated by McGovern himself. The senator died in 2012.

Howe, born on the Crow Creek Reservation in 1915, developed a distinctive painting style that continues to influence Native American artists today. His early work reflected traditional representational Native American styles. His later work is more abstract. For years, Howe designed the corn murals of the World’s Only Corn Palace. Today the Oscar Howe Art Gallery on the second floor of the Corn Palace displays his work. His 1940 mural, “Sun and Rain Clouds Over Hills,” in the dome of the Carnegie Resource Center, is one of his most wellknown pieces. The former Carnegie Library was constructed in 1903 with funds from steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Today the Carnegie Resource Center is home to the Mitchell Area Historical Society and the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society.

Lake Mitchell just north of the city has all kinds of outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, biking, fishing, boating, golf and camping. You’ll find 8 miles of off-road hiking and biking trails in the Kiwanis Woodlot Park along the lake’s shore. You’ll be pedaling through deep stands of hardwoods and evergreens. Follow the signs to the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village. Pump Track The Kiwanis Woodlot Park Pump Track, a continuous loop dirt trail with lots of berms and rollers, is a good place to improve your cycling skills. Use the downhill momentum on the backside of the rollers to propel you into the next roller. If you do it right, pedaling is minimal.

SPEND THE DAY AT MITCHELL’S GREAT EIGHT Although Mitchell is home to the World’s Only Corn Palace, there is so much more to see and do. To help you make the most of your stay, we created Mitchell’s Great 8.
3. Prehistoric Indian Village & Archeodome An active (and indoor) archeological dig, this site is still revealing the secrets from a farming-and-hunting culture that lived here 1,100 years ago. (Suggested time, 1-1/2 hours; admission $6.)
6. Historic Main Street The vitality and variety of Mitchell’s center will be apparent when you step out of the car. Explore the shops, boutiques, antique stores and restaurants, all a short walk from the Corn Palace. (Suggested time, 2 hours; admission free.)
4. Lake Mitchell A great place to cool off and let the kids burn off road-trip energy, this scenic lake a mile and a half from the Corn Palace offers
1. The World’s Only Corn Palace This unique ‘ear-chitecture’ is adorned with thousands of bushels of colorful corn, grains and native grasses. The Corn Palace is especially cool at night, when the domes glow and the facade is illuminated. (Suggested time, 1 hour; admission free.)
sandy beaches, picnic areas, places for boating and fishing, and wooded trails for hiking and biking. (Suggested time, 2 hours; admission free.)
7. Carnegie Resource Center The domed ceiling mural by noted Native American artist Oscar Howe and a trove of Corn Palace memorabilia are the highlights of this former library. (Suggested time, 45 minutes; admission free.)
MITCHELLTrivia
The Beckwith Home, built in 1886, was built for whom?
Louis and Mary Beckwith, cofounder of the very first Corn Palace in 1892.
2. Dakota Discovery Museum & McGovern Center Explore the cultures that have called this region home -- Native Americans, homesteaders and merchants. The 1886 Beckwith Home, a restored Victorian home, is a gem. (Suggested time, 1-1/2 hours; admission $3 to $7.)
5. Mitchell Aquatic Center This outdoor water park features a 50-meter competition pool, zero-depth areas and 100-foot water slides. (Suggested time, 2 hours; admission $5.)
8. Wildlife Displays at Cabela’s This sprawling sporting goods outlet features a variety of North American trophy mounts in a spectacular mountain setting. Giant aquariums give you an up-close look at native South Dakota lunkers. (Suggested time, 1 hour; admission free.)

The plains of eastern South Dakota are home to one of the richest ringneck pheasant populations in North America. Bird hunters from across the United States flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant hunting. Guided and youth hunts make Mitchell a great place for a yearly hunt. A number of locally owned sporting good stores cater yearround to hunting, archery, and fishing enthusiasts. In addition, Cabela’s has an 80,000-square-foot retail outlet in Mitchell that is part store, part wildlife museum and part tourist attraction. The aquarium features living lunkers such as trout, walleye and bass. The soaring back wall is a “mountain” adorned with realistic animal mounts, from bighorn sheep and mountain goats to mountain lions, bears, moose and elk. Many of the mounts were created by Hellman’s Taxidermy, the renowned Mitchell taxidermy shop located in Mitchell. In addition to over 1,000 hotel rooms in the Mitchell area, it’s easy to find a relaxing hunting lodge or bed & breakfast to meet your needs after a long hunt. When you’re ready to come inside, enjoy a meal at one of our local restaurants. Mitchell also houses sports bars, coffee shops and retail stores.
