NEW PEDESTRIAN SPACE

ENHANCES CORN PALACE EXPERIENCE The World’s Only Corn Palace, which dates back to 1892, saw big improvements this past year which will serve to enhance the visitor experience for years to come.

The NEW Corn Palace Plaza offers a safe and relaxing area for visitors wanting to view the iconic Palace. In addition, the area will host special events throughout the year like live entertainment, vendor fairs and the Corn Palace Festival. Some 325,000 colorful ears of corn are carefully sliced and nailed into place on the murals that adorn the building. It is all done by hand, a folk art form that is all but lost ... but not here. A local farmer plants 10-12 different colors of corn in carefully separated plots to ensure plants don’t cross-pollinate and dilute the purity of the colors.

Bundles of ryegrass and sour dock, a hearty prairie plant, are stapled to the frames. New this year, students from Dakota Wesleyan University were given the opportunity to design new murals. The first Mitchell Corn Palace was part of a late 19th century race by farming communities to make names for themselves, promote their products and draw curious visitors. Aberdeen had the Grain Palace, Rapid City the Alfalfa Palace. Rod Evans, who wrote “Palaces on the Prairie,” found records of 34 palaces in 24 towns across the Midwest. All are gone, except for the World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell.

Oscar Howe’s presence can be found throughout Mitchell. The world-renowned artist’s works are on display at Dakota Discovery Museum, the Carnegie Resource Center and the Mitchell Corn Palace. The displays are a testament to Oscar Howe’s long friendship with the Mitchell community.

art that continues to this day. Although his paintings maintained many of the traditional visual elements of buffalo skin and ledger paper paintings, he wasn’t afraid to explore more abstract and stylistic works. Some of his paintings have been compared to the cubist works of Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso.

Each year between 1948 and 1971, Howe designed the giant corn murals that bedeck the Corn Palace’s exterior walls. Like Michelangelo, Howe lay on his back atop makeshift scaffolding to paint a circular mural on the domed ceiling of the Carnegie Resource Center, a few blocks from the Corn Palace.

In 1958, Howe submitted a piece for a show at the Philbrook Art Center in Tulsa, Okla., but the piece was rejected because, he was told, it didn’t meet the criteria of traditional Indian art. Howe’s reply:

But Oscar Howe (1915 - 1983) is best known for his paintings on flat surfaces, colorful pieces with Native American themes and innovative designs that pushed Native American art beyond its base of representational paintings. Dakota Discovery Museum on the campus of Howe’s alma mater, Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, has a gallery devoted to his work. Howe is credited with influencing the direction of contemporary Native American

“Are we to be held back forever with one phase of Indian painting that is the most common way? Are we to be herded like a bunch of sheep, with no right for individualism, dictated to as the Indian has always been, put on reservations and treated like a child and only the White Man know what is best for him ... but one could easily turn to become a social protest painter. I only hope the Art World will not be one more contributor to holding us in chains.” His letter, and his work, inspired other Native American artists to explore new styles and imagery.

MITCHELL PREHISTORIC INDIAN VILLAGE

SIGNIFICANT ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE More than a century after its 1910 discovery by a student from Dakota Wesleyan University, the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is still revealing new clues about the lives of the people who lived on this site 1,100 years ago.

Boehnen Memorial Museum

Archeology Days

Inside the Boehnen Memorial Museum you will see a reconstructed earthen lodge and some of the 1.5 million artifacts that have been recovered. Visitors can watch a video showcasing the ongoing excavations in the Betty Buche Boehnen Roby Technology Center, followed by a guided tour of the museum and Archeodome. The Village’s Shoppe Antiquary represents more than 100 Native American artists and has something for everyone.

Archeology Days will take place on June 30 and July 1. Archaeologists, primitive technologists and Native American cultural presenters will give discussions, showcase flintknapping, beadworking, ancient games, pottery making and more. Visitors can learn how to throw a spear using an atlatl, make their own pottery and learn a Native American dance.

Thomsen Center Archeodome From mid-June to mid-July visitors can watch as archaeology students from around the world uncover more clues about the people who lived here 1,000 years ago. Archaeologist interns are in the Archeodome from May to August, answering questions and giving tours. Although our knowledge of this village increases every year, there is still much more to learn about its inhabitants and how they lived.

Audrey’s Garden It’s much more than a garden. Audrey’s Garden is a place where visitors can learn how prehistoric villagers subsisted 1,000 years ago. The garden is filled with the same plants that the villagers grew for food, medicines, dyes and other basic needs. A new garden, filled with cereomonial plants like sage and sweet grass was added in 2017. Its focal point is a Native American sculpture expressing reconciliation between natives, non-natives and the environment. With benches, interpretive signs and an accompanying booklet, Audrey’s Garden is a tranquil and informative setting.

MCGOVERN LEGACY MUSEUM A LEGACY OF PUBLIC SERVICE While you are on the Dakota Wesleyan University campus, stop by the McGovern Library right across the street from the Dakota Discovery Museum. Just inside the doors is the McGovern Legacy Museum that looks at the career of hometown hero, Sen. George McGovern.

It is fitting that McGovern Library is on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. Before the author and activist served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, he was a student and later a professor at the university. Sen. McGovern was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972. He lost to incumbent Richard Nixon in an emotionally charged era remembered for the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation in 1974. The McGovern Museum displays many exhibits that tell the story of McGovern’s life as a World War II bomber pilot, college professor, Democratic organizer, U.S. Representative and Senator, director of Food for Peace under President John F. Kennedy, and ambassador to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome. In 2001, he was appointed the first U.N. global ambassador on hunger. Many of the stories are told in audio and video displays narrated by McGovern himself. The senator died in 2012.

An unapologetic liberal and staunch opponent to the Vietnam War, McGovern also made less public, more far-reaching contributions. He is perhaps best remembered for his commitment to ending world hunger, a cause commemorated at the museum. His legacy of leadership lives on through the McGovern Center for Leadership and Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University. The library archives and collections include McGovern memorabilia, documents, photographs and the Senator’s personal book collection.

CARNEGIE RESOURCE CENTER HISTORY AND ART HAVE FOUND A HOME The Carnegie Resource Center is only a few blocks from the Mitchell Corn Palace. Of special note is the colorful mural painted on the domed ceiling by well-known Native American artist Oscar Howe.

Howe, born on the Crow Creek Reservation in 1915, developed a distinctive painting style that continues to influence Native American artists today. His early work reflected traditional representational Native American styles. His later work is more abstract. For years, Howe designed the corn murals of the World’s Only Corn Palace. Today the Oscar Howe Art Gallery on the second floor of the Corn Palace displays his work. His 1940 mural, “Sun and Rain Clouds Over Hills,” in the dome of the Carnegie Resource Center, is one of his most wellknown pieces. The former Carnegie Library was constructed in 1903 with funds from

steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Today, the Carnegie Resource Center is home to the Mitchell Area Historical Society and the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society.

FAMILY FRIENDLY BICYCLING ROUTES FOR ALL SKILL LEVELS Mitchell might be known as the home of the World’s Only Corn Palace, but another name might be appropriate as well: Bicycle Town USA. Whether you love mountain bikes, street bikes or cruisers, you will have plenty of space for your two-wheeled pursuits.

Lake Mitchell, just north of the city, has all kinds of outdoor recreation opportunities, such as hiking, biking, fishing, boating, golf and camping.

Kiwanis Woodlot Park You’ll find eight miles of off-road hiking and biking trails in the Kiwanis Woodlot Park along the lake’s shore. You’ll be pedaling through deep stands of hardwoods and evergreens. Follow the signs to the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village.

Pump Track The Kiwanis Woodlot Park Pump Track, a continuous loop dirt trail with lots of berms and rollers, is a good place to improve your

cycling skills. Use the downhill momentum on the backside of the rollers to propel you into the next roller. If you do it right, pedaling is minimal.

Tour de Corn Each year the Palace City Pedalers put on the Tour de Corn, a family-friendly bicycling event for all skill levels. This year’s Tour De Corn is set for Aug. 17 to 19. The ride itself is Saturday, Aug. 19. Participants gather at the Corn Palace at 9:30 a.m. Riders can choose routes that range from 15 miles to 100 miles. Proceeds support local bike trails and recreation opportunities.

PREMIER HUNTING

LOCATED IN THE TOP RINGNECK RANGE South Dakota’s love of hunting, fishing and the outdoors is apparent in Mitchell. In addition to great outdoor opportunities just outside of town, the city has a number of businesses geared toward hunting and fishing.

The plains of eastern South Dakota are home to one of the richest ringneck pheasant populations in North America. Bird hunters from across the United States flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant hunting. Guided and youth hunts make Mitchell a great place for a yearly hunt. A number of locally owned sporting good stores cater year-round to hunting, archery, and fishing enthusiasts. In addition, Cabela’s has an 80,000-squarefoot retail outlet in Mitchell that is part store, part wildlife museum and part tourist attraction. The aquarium features living lunkers such as trout, walleye and bass. The soaring back wall is a “mountain”

adorned with realistic animal mounts, from bighorn sheep and mountain goats to mountain lions, bears, moose and elk. Many of the mounts were created by Hellman’s Taxidermy, the renowned Mitchell taxidermy shop. In addition to more than 1,000 hotel rooms in the Mitchell area, it’s easy to find a relaxing hunting lodge or bed and breakfast to meet your needs after a long hunt. When you’re ready to come inside, enjoy a meal at one of our local restaurants. Mitchell also houses sports bars, coffee shops and retail stores.
