Overview The Mitchell High School Performing Arts Center is a complex built to develop and showcase the abundant talent possessed by the youth of our State. This 65,000 square foot facility is located on the 42 acre Senior High School campus consisting of seven independent educational centers and creating a university style learning environment. The Performing Arts Center is divided into two sections. 49,000 square feet, or 75% of the facility is dedicated to skill development consisting of many self-guided practice rooms, the Thompsen/Stahle band room, a large choir room, a large rehearsal room and various classrooms dedicated to the arts. The remaining 16,000 square feet of the facility is dedicated to the presentation of those talents and available as a venue for events that fit the purpose and intent of the Performing Arts Center. This portion of the complex possesses the same sound, lighting, staging, and audience seating attributes available in most professional venues. The Ron and Sheilah Gates Auditorium South Dakota’s large school districts are home to several impressive performance halls. Mitchell can now lay claim to being one of the best of them. The 14,000+ square foot hall seats 1230 audience members in opera style providing floor, lower balcony, and upper balcony accommodations. No seat is more than 120 feet from the stage with access to disabled Americans and their companions at the forefront of our design and construction.

“The alliance of craftsman and creative draftsman built a facility that received national recognition for outstanding theater design. A school only builds one of these in a lifetime, only one chance to get it right. The architects used only engineers and draftsmen experienced in theater design, subcontractors were chosen by proven results, even the general contractor assigned a project supervisor that was not only a superb builder, but, also an accomplished musician. Compelling Audience Experience With 1,229 seats available in the three-tier auditorium, the seating design of the Mitchell High School Performing Arts Center allows a wide variety of ticket pricing structures.

Our recommendation is to treat the seating area between the orchestra pit wall and first section wall of the theater as premium seating and price the seats accordingly. There are 240 seats in this area including eleven ADA (wheelchair seats) with companion seating. That pricing structure would leave 989 general admission seats available. 6 | Mitchell High School Performing Arts Center

Compelling Theater

The Gates Theater is comfortable and compelling for the audience and contestants alike. The technical capabilities of this performance hall match its appearance. The acoustical special elements in this space were designed by a nationally recognized acoustical engineer with a personnel interest, his parents live in Mitchell. The audio, video, and theatrical lighting abilities available are professional at every level. The front of house is very impressive. Our backstage abilities are equally remarkable.
