ALPENFEST® PRESENTED BY
Willkommen!
And Welcome to the 52nd Alpenfest. Come “Down on Main” and join us for art, entertainment, free food events, games and contests for the entire family. This is a celebration where all of our visitors become part of our community. We will jumpstart Alpenfest® with the Honors Luncheon on Tuesday. The Opening Ceremonies on the Alpenstage feature Jake Allen followed by the Queen’s Pageant. Stick around for the Burning of Boogg when all our troubles go up in smoke allowing us to enjoy the festivities worry free. Stroll back to the pavilion where Star Wars Characters will meet and greet the crowd as we enjoy “The Force Awakens.” Wednesday morning we will gather as a community for the Walking Parade which leads us to the World’s Largest Coffee Break. At noon the Young Americans will perform on the Alpenstage. The day is full of fun including a special performance during the Children’s Hour at 4:00 pm. New this year is an Art Tent with children’s art activities, demonstrations for all ages and adult “Paint and Take” projects. The evening concert at the mainstage is Beginnings, Chicago Tribute Band. Thursday and Friday offer equally busy days followed by wonderful evening concerts. Check out the Art Tent all week long. Then join us Thursday for the hometown favorites The Cookies who will entertain us with a mix of Motown, pop, funk covers and brand new originals on the Alpenstage; Friday promises Satisfaction/The International Rolling Stones Show. Sit back and relax Friday night to watch the fireworks following their performance. Saturday morning there is still plenty of time to stroll Alpenstrasse to visit our Artisans’ booths and local shops before finding the perfect spot to watch the Grand Parade. Activities continue on the courthouse lawn for children of all ages. A Classic Car and Truck Show on Court Street, Alpenfest Idol Finals, and a meet and greet of Fairy Tales Characters are just a few activities to keep you busy. Saturday evening Alan Turner and the Steel Horse Band, the 2015 nominee for New Artist of the Year, ride in to town for a boot stompin’ hand clappin’ showdown. On behalf of the city of Gaylord, the Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Alpenfest® board, we invite you to share and enjoy this year’s 52nd Alpenfest® 2016 “Down on Main.”

THE LEGEND OF HERR GESSLER
According to legend, Gessler was an evil ruler in Switzerland and Austria in the 13th century. He forced everyone in the area to bow down to his hat as a symbol of authority. Gessler would leave his hat in the square and all those who passed it would be forced to bow down. When William Tell, who had been hunting in the mountains with his son when Gessler came into power, came into the square he did not bow down to the feathered hat. Herr Gessler became so enraged that he arrested Tell and his son. As punishment, Tell had to shoot an apple off his son’s head. Tell succeeded and then turned his arrow on Gessler. Tell was able to overthrow Gessler and become the new ruler. Somehow Gessler was able to escape to Gaylord a few hundred years later. He now tries to ruin Alpenfest® for everyone by demanding quiet and that passers-by bow down to his hat. However, the Alpine Village wins over the evil tyrant with the sweet lyrics of “Edelweiss.”

LAMPION PARADE
The Lampion Parade originated in Switzerland, where it also coincides with the burning of the Boogg during their spring celebration. Parsnips are hollowed out, and designs are cut into the sides. Next the lantern is then placed into a macramé basket, and a candle is placed inside. At Alpenfest®, children and adults cut designs into the sides and top of a box. The designs are then covered with colored tissue paper or plastic wrap. A flashlight is inserted providing light as well as a handle to carry the lantern. Everyone carries their lampion in a procession that takes the Boogg to its burning site.
LEGEND OF THE BOOGG
Boogg, a giant snowman of cotton wool, symbolizes winter to the Swiss, and they burn the statue yearly with colorful pageantry to celebrate the beginning of spring. In Gaylord, the Burning of the Boogg has taken on new meaning and added delight. Alpine Village residents and visitors jot down their troubles and problems on slips of paper and then place them inside the Boogg. The Boogg is then ignited, and everyone’s troubles go up in smoke! Now all can enjoy the fun and festivities of Alpenfest®!
