CHANGES CHALLENGES

WHO WE ARE

The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a charitable organization that’s dedicated to improving and enriching life for all who live in our area. Founded by a group of local citizens in 1992, the organization has grown to be a valuable resource for our county, distributing more than $31 million in grants over the past 29 years.

WHAT WE DO

With long-term experience in grantmaking and developing relationships with nonprofit organizations, we understand how to support and cultivate growth in the communities around us. Each year our grants encourage environmental stewardship, the arts, economic growth, health and wellness, youth initiatives, recreation, education, and more.

MISSION VISION

To enhance the quality of life for all citizens of Charlevoix County, now and for generations to come.

To be the trustworthy resource for philanthropy by building permanent endowment, addressing needs through grant making, and providing leadership resources to serve our community. FOR GOOD. FOR EVER.

2

From Challenges . . . To Changes.

The past year has been unlike any other in our experience. Time and again, we accepted the challenges and changed, for the better. We’ve worked alongside our nonprofit and community partners . . . learning and adapting along the way to new and ever-changing sets of circumstances. We’ve used charitable resources provided by donors to meet needs and fill gaps . . . preserving important services and providing new opportunities, while continuing to do all that we can to try to keep everyone in our community safe and secure.

Our ability to meet challenges and make changes is made possible only through the generosity of those who live, work, and play in Charlevoix County, and through the amazing commitment exhibited by so many traditional and new partners. We feel fortunate to have been uniquely positioned to act positively at this intersection of needs and resources.

While it’s certain that more challenges and changes are ahead of us, we feel just as certain that the healthy relationships we’ve built over the years will help us be aware of community needs and opportunities, allowing us to be ever-more effective today and ever-more impactful tomorrow.

Thank you for standing with us.

FROM

ISOLATION

From Working in Isolation to Collaboration: Housing in Charlevoix County

When people needed to “Stay Home and Stay Safe,” housing was more important than ever. But the fact that housing is critical to individuals, families, and communities isn’t news to Steve Schnell of Housing North: “Housing is an important determinant of one’s health, upward mobility, access to education, and ultimately success in life.”

The Community Foundation is proud to partner with Housing North, Charlevoix County, the cities of Boyne City, Charlevoix, and East Jordan, nonprofit organizations, local groups of housing advocates, and the Frey Foundation to discover paths that will increase the supply of housing across a variety of price points in Charlevoix County. “Many folks have been working diligently in this space for years,” notes Schnell, “but this level of collaboration is truly moving our communities toward solutions to long-term housing challenges.”

“ Most families have two working parents, and not everyone has grandparents and extended family who can help take care of the kids. Training Wheels is like an extension of our family! It’s a huge blessing. ”

— Kristi Nowka, parent of two

FROM NEED

Responding to Need with Nurturing: Training Wheels Daycare Center

Parents, employers, and county-level data all tell the same story: our communities don’t have enough quality, affordable, convenient childcare for working families.

Danielle Poindexter, or “GranDani” as she is widely known now, saw the need first-hand as a caregiver for an increasing number of grandchildren. She was motivated to find a solution for her own family and so many others. “It was not easy to start a childcare center,” shares Danielle. “I cried tears of frustration when we hit roadblocks and tears of joy for each small success as we navigated a very complex system. Only something as important as our community’s kids could have kept me going.”

Through a partnership with East Jordan Public Schools and support from a variety of funds at the Community Foundation and other sponsors, Danielle and her team opened Training Wheels Daycare Center in April. In the months since, groups in other communities have reached out to Danielle and Training Wheels’ staff to learn from their experience in hopes of replicating this model for families across the County.

Turning Coping into Hoping: Youth Advisory Committee

In 2019, the Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) found that young people across the County were concerned about mental health. A survey of peers revealed that local teens are facing serious issues like academic stress, substance use, family issues, and mental illnesses like anxiety and depression.

The YAC decided to move forward with a focus on programs that would positively influence mental health. Then COVID-19 led to the potential loss of nurses who serve students in public schools. The Community Foundation acted to pool resources to keep school nurses in place for the 2020-2021 year. The YAC participated with the largest grant in the history of the Community Foundation’s youth grantmaking: $32,000 was directed toward the school nurse program in partnership with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan.

8

The pivot toward an urgent situation did not distract the YAC from their goal of responding to the needs of their peers. These young leaders refocused their attention on youth mental health. They recommended grants for more middle school mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters, additional staff at Northern Michigan Equine Therapy to reduce the waitlist for kids in need of support, continued investment in the Women’s Resource Center’s Child Advocacy Center, and more.

The YAC recommends grants from the Youth Fund, which was started in 1993 when community members earned a matching grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. More recently, Funds for Youth became an option for individuals, couples, and families to start an endowment that also supports YAC grantmaking for the benefit of our communities’ young people, forever.

LEADING

Our dedicated Trustees showed us just how effective a board can be during a global pandemic. Embracing Zoom meetings, making and supporting electronic motions, and doing all the behind the curtain duties that held us together and guided our work. We’re so fortunate to benefit from their experience, talent, and participation. They lead in the very best way there is to lead . . . by example.

AN IMPACT

Talented, committed, and eager to provide help where help is needed most, our staff continues to do all they can to fill gaps and create opportunities in our communities. Blending remote and in-office efforts, our team spent the last year making connections, broadening our reach, and increasing our impact.

LISTENING INFORMS ACTION

In order to keep important programs and services available for our community last year, the Community Foundation offered general support to nonprofit partners. Listening to partners led to extending this practice through 2021.

Now we want to hear from you. Take our survey online or pick up a paper survey at your local library or Commission on Aging. Let us know what you see as priorities for a thriving community. This input and other data will help C3F board and staff set priorities for making a difference close to home.
