Our amenities have been very active over the last couple of months, as we have had spectacular weather. Its so nice to see our members with their families and guests enjoying our Club. As I have spoken about in my earlier articles this year, we are celebrating 50 Years of Birchwood Farms Golf & Country Club! We kicked off our celebrations in the month of June with throwback specials and Two-for-50 dinner specials in our dining rooms. We hope you are enjoying the throwback specials featuring popular dishes from the 1970’s and old favorites from Birchwood’s past. We hosted a Birchwood History Lecture Series event in June showcasing guest speakers, Richard Stewart, current Birchwood member and Birchwood’s first golf professional in the early 1970’s; Craig Cottrill, current Birchwood member and the nephew of Birchwood’s original developer, Bill Cottrill; and Tom Brogger, Birchwood’s current Golf Course Superintendent and longest tenured employee. I want to thank all three gentlemen for a wonderful evening as they shared their stories and memories of Birchwood’s past. A big thank you goes to Jean Scroggin and the Activities Committee for their planning of all of the 2022 Lecture Series speakers this summer. This is the first hole for the original course, before Woods was constructed. The Farms opened in 1972 with Birches in '73 and Woods '98. Originally the green was much smaller and was enlarged slightly. The back third of the green slopes away and 2 greenside bunkers are waiting to catch the ball! Drainage was installed subsurface in the late 80's and a few trees were removed to allow more sunlight and air move ment. In 1992 the designer added the left fairway bunker to add more definition to the hole and the Silver tees were moved forward much to the ladies delight! Photo and text by Maryle Barbé

Thursday, September 8th STEVE LIBERT Steve Libert was an eighth-grader in Dayton, OH, when he become intrigued by the mystery of a ship called The Grifn, in French ‘Le Griffon’. His history teacher told a tale of the lost ship that sparked Steve’s imagination of early exploration; and fty-one years later Steve is still intrigued by the story. ‘Le Griffon’, the agship of explorer Rene-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle, disappeared in 1679 on her maiden voyage. She was the rst upper-decked vessel known to have sailed above Niagara Falls and into the upper Great Lakes. Historic records sat the iconic ship disappeared near the Huron Islands – but what islands are those now? And where are they? A search for the ship would continue over 340 years. Steve’s interest in undersea technology, exploration and diving began when that eighth-grade teacher reached over and touched Steve’s shoulder and said out loud in class, “Maybe one day someone in this class will nd it!” Be sure to reserve your space early.

Thank you all for the support for your Club.

The Club is fortunate to have his level of talent and expertise to help grow our A la Carte operation and we know he will continue to push the staff's culinary talents to bring you the best quality dining experience possible. We continue to work hard on our mission of providing our Membership with only the finest and fresh, local ingredients around. We source all of our beef from DemKota Beef Ranch, a group of small family farms where the cattle have been systematically bred and provided lots of room to roam in order to ensure an excellent final product. We are also pleased to now provide our ice cream treats from Guernsey Farm Dairy out of Northville, Michigan. We will continue to work hard sourcing only the best products locally and worldwide. The culinary team has been busy with the many summer events this season! We provided a cookout for the Main tenance Open House as well as all of the festivities through another beautiful northern Michigan Fourth of July. We hope all are enjoying our culinary offerings at all of the Lecture Series and Wine Dinners this season. Be sure to join us for our 50th Anniversary Party on Saturday, August 13th, where you can enjoy your beautiful clubhouse and an incredible lobster boil!

Our summer season is in full swing and we are half way though our 50th Anniversary Celebration! We started celebrating on New Year’s Eve, with a return to our annual party. We then went back to the 1970’s at the Spring Mingle in May. We kicked off Lecture Series with a History of Birchwood panel in June and in July, the kids got to celebrate with a pool party and movie night. Next up it’s the big 50th celebration Summer Party on Saturday, August 13th! We are featuring the Jelly Roll Blues Band and taking over the entire Clubhouse! It will surely be a night to remember! Make sure to make your reservations for this momentous event. All of us in the Catering Department are very excited with our Audio/Visual upgrade to the Main Dining Room. We now have two retractable screens with an extremely easy login system. Business meetings and presentations will look flawless. We offer Meet, Eat and Golf packages to make those boring business meetings a lot more fun. Show off all the best features of your Club to your colleagues and book a package today! This is our biggest year for weddings and big private events in quite a few years. Referrals for these events do earn our members a $500 Food & Beverage credit upon their booking. So tell your family, friends and neighbors what an amazing venue we offer. We have limited dates available for 2023 so call me today to get on our schedule. Before we know it, summer will be gone and our snowbird friends will be returning to their warm winter homes. Make sure you book a farewell dinner in the Library or on the North Deck. Let us do the work so you can enjoy their company longer. Summer is always bittersweet… It’s our season, what we plan for all winter long, it comes so fast and ends even faster. It’s hard to believe summer is already half over!
Along with Payne and Myself we added a wonder young gentleman to our racquets staff, Jayson LeGrow.
On June 14th Birchwood held a fantastic Take a Swing at Cancer event. We had 35 participants on the racquets side playing tennis, Pickleball and Bocce. The Racquets Department was able to raise $2,120 for the cause. Special thanks to Linda Minasian, Kimberly Rowland, Laurie Glissman, Amy Hackman and Marc Horowitz who volunteered their time making this a wonderful fun event. As we hope to help find the cure, please take care of yourself also.
Hi Racquets Enthusiasts, Summer is upon us and our racquets programs and events are in full swing! Courts are busy with lots of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Members are working on improving their games and getting into great shape while taking in the beautiful days and amenities that Birchwood has to offer.

As most of you know we have a new Pickleball Pro who is driving the program and doing an amazing job. If you have not had a chance to meet Marc Horowitz yet, please introduce yourself when you get a chance.
On the Tennis side there are a few program updates, the biggest is the addition of Live Ball/105 games on Thursday mornings at 9:00am. A large addition to our Racquets programming this year is an Annual Invitational Event.
Birchwood Racquets Invitational Weekend will be held Saturday, August 20th and Sunday, August 21st. It will be comprised of Men's and Women's Doubles Round-Robins for both Pickleball and Tennis. We will also be holding a Bocce Tournament which will be gender neutral. On Saturday night we will have a party for participants and anyone who would like to attend. Pickleball and Bocce will be held Saturday, Tennis on Sunday and party on Saturday night. You may sign up for just one or all the events. The Fund is a component of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation (PHSACF), an established tax deductible 501(c)3 organization. Although part of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation, the Birchwood Fund’s Advisory Committee specifies exactly which charities it will support each year… with recommendations made by its donors.

As there are a number of members who have recently joined Birchwood, it seems appropriate to spend a few minutes explaining the mission of our Birchwood Outreach Fund (BOF) and how your donations are utilized to help those in need in our local community of Harbor Springs.

18 Greetings from the Golf Shop!

I’d like to catch up on all of our Final Results from golf events hosted so far this season. Starting with our annual Memorial Day Scramble, we hosted a big field of 100 players, up from 88 in 2021. Our Women’s Member / Member, unfortunately, turned into a 1-day event as round one was rained out. This year’s winners were Deb Baker and Patti Prendeville. Congratulations!

I am happy to announce that our BWA Mixed Golf on Tuesdays, Women’s Golf Association on Wednesdays and our Men’s Day on Fridays have all been well attended this season!
Participation for this year’s “Take a Bigger Swing at Cancer” Club event was a little lower that in the last couple of years but I understand there were a couple of other local events that may have had something to do with it. Nonetheless, as always, our Birchwood Members supported the event in other ways. A big thanks to Liz Reynolds and all of her volunteers for another great job.
Wow! Can you believe that our 2022 golf season is almost half over? However, as we head into the last couple of months there is still plenty of golf to be played. Golf rounds are down when comparing to 2020-2021 and the weather this season has certainly played a large part in the number of rounds played. In 2021 we opened the Farms and Woods courses on April 16th. This year we didn’t have our first round played until April 30th, followed by many cool, wet days.Another contributing factor is that our Members are able to travel more than in the past two years. The Covid restrictions were lifted and graduations, weddings, sporting events, travel, etc. resumed. All of this also has an impact on our golf play.

Our two Invitationals, the Men’s Green Coat Member/Guest and the Women’s Silver Birch Member/ Guest are played in mid and late July respectively. We are looking forward to hosting these big member golf events this season!
Our Men’s Member/Member, played on June 25-26th was well attended with 24 teams (48 players), up from 22 teams in 2021. Congratulations to Bill Brown and Joe Luby! Next up was our Annual Independence Day Scramble played on July 2nd. Always one of our biggest summer events we host!
19 awards followed and a good time was had by all. I heard many compliments regarding our golf course, Clubhouse and service.
Though total rounds are slightly down this season we sure have been busy! As we know, staffing has been a challenge club-wide over the past few seasons, golf department included. We have many new staff members, both in the golf shop and on the bag staff. Many are young adults that are willing to work which is a great start! Our season hits full stride in a hurry so training and learning all as pects of the operation is sometimes difficult in such a short period of time. Tyler has done an excellent job of training, teaching and other aspects of the golf op eration but many times there are just not enough hours in the day for us! I really want to thank you for your patience and appreciate your understanding. I’m looking forward to a strong finish this season so please continue to support our events. It truly is our Members that makes Birchwood Farms what it is! Golf

Now before I start sounding like a boring uncle, I leave you with this. We are here to make your living experience at Birchwood enjoyable and we are dedicated to helping you out anytime you ask. If any of you ever get in a serious bind and just don't know what to do - call us. We might not be able to do the thing that is needed ourselves, but we will sure help you search for the resources to get it done.
Enjoy AssistantPatrickSincerely,life!MorrisChief of Security (231) 526-2166 ext. security@birchwoodcc.com549
Please be mindful of the extra traffic on our roads. We have more people walking with their grandchildren and pets than ever before. Also, we have a lot more bike traffic especially since people are getting on board with the new e-bikes.
Well, it feels like summer is finally here. I hope everyone is enjoying their gar dening, I know the deer sure are. All of us in the Security Department really appreciate the opportunity to serve our membership, and are diligently working on all the security/EMS issues and concerns. We have an excellent leadership team here at the club, our policies and procedures are concise and consistently applied and your security team is very goal and service focused so things should go smoothly.
Many people who have not been on bikes in years are now able, with this new technology, to enjoy the outdoors. But they are also out of practice.
So just a few things to things to ponder as we start our summer season…
It does seem like our new traffic fine schedule has had the desired effect of slowing people down. It was never our intent to generate revenue, it was initiated to improve safety. Also there has been quite an improvement with regard to the recycling area. I thank everyone for their efforts in keeping the recycling area aesthetically compliant. Now on the EMS side I would like to mention a few things. Please do not leave your children unattended at the pool.
Little children especially if they get hurt or fearful have a tendency to get very emotional. Some not only forget where they live but they might not even remember what their parents' names are which could make even a small issue traumatic. Remember the pool is not daycare and parents or guardians must supervise their children under the age of 16. Also remember on hot days it's imperative, especially as we get older, to keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water especially if you're out in the hot sun or doing physical activities. Our department would like your help as we do not get out on the golf courses as often as we should. It is okay to check the AEDs that are positioned at the restrooms here at Birchwood. If you notice anything wrong with the boxes or that they are making a beeping sound, please contact our office. Also, this time of year as you come back from your winter properties it's a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors at your summer residence.

Summer is finally here and is in full swing at Birchwood! It has been wonderful to see our BWA friends, who spent the colder months elsewhere, return to this beautiful Club in Harbor Springs!
We have already had several, fun events that took place beginning in June. The June 4th Progressive Dinner, chaired by Fran Borchers, Ronnie Higgs, and Kathy Thompson, was very enjoyable with delicious appetizers, a main course, and desserts. Thank you to these three Chairs and to all of you who offered your homes for this fun, social event. B.U.G. Day (Bottoms Up Gardening), chaired by Joanne Murphy on June 7th, resulted in lots of planting with pretty, showy gardens around Birchwood thanks to the efforts of several women and some men who helped make our Club even more beautiful. Our Welcome Back Luncheon on June 9th was such a fabulous experience thanks to Co-Chairs, Sue Conley and Patty Whitehouse, who decorated our dining room with a pretty tea party theme. Cynthia Apostolakis, Sue Conley, and I had fun providing interesting information about Birchwood's and our BWA's history, Sue's father's home in Wequetonsing, and Cynthia's experiences spending Summers in Harbor Springs during the 1950's and 1960's. New BWA Members since last June were invited to attend a Reception on June 25th at the home of Laurie and Terry Glissman. We enjoyed an interesting BWA Green Coat Outing, chaired by Renee McDuffee, on July 14th touring Bay View and having lunch at Stafford's Bay View Inn. Be sure to mark your calendars for our Fall BWA Luncheon which will take place Thursday, September 15th chaired by Suzanne Upward and Carol Wren. Have a wonderful Summer at Birchwood and enjoy all that this special Club has to offer.
