LIVE LARGE WITH NATURAL GAS.

Take your living space outdoors with clean, reliable energy. From grilling to decorative lighting, fire pits to swimming pool heaters, natural gas makes it possible to enjoy outdoor spaces longer.

Find out all the ways at dteenergy.com/gashouse.

Extend your favorite Michigan season. Nothing says summer like a warm night outside with burgers on the grill, cooking s’mores over a fire and enjoying a swim or a soak in a pool or hot tub at just the right temperature. What you may not realize is that there’s an easy way to make all those things possible using the same fuel that warms your house and cooks your food in the winter: natural gas. Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces are increasingly popular ways to create a focal point when enjoying a deck or patio, but traditional wood-burning pits and fireplaces generate smoke and ash that require cleaning

and constant tending. A natural gas fireplace or fire pit, however, starts and stops at the push of a button and burns just as cleanly as the burners on your stove. Natural gas can also power outdoor lighting for a soft, warm glow to make your outdoor space more inviting. Whether it’s for looks, for light or for toasting marshmallows, natural gas lights, and a fire pit or fireplace makes your outdoor space more inviting. Not only is natural gas perfect to enhance your outdoor living area, it’s also more economical – costing 30 to 50 percent less than other energy sources. Plus, it’s environmentally friendly and the cleanest naturally occurring energy source. So make your Michigan summer extend further into fall, and begin sooner in spring with natural gas!

CHARLEVOIX PUBLIC LIBRARY, CHILDREN’S GARDEN HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN

CREATED BY SITE PLANNING, CHARLEVOIX

2

220 CLINTON ST | CHARLEVOIX, MI 49720 Site Planning is pleased to sponsor Grandma Geri’s Children’s Garden at the Charlevoix Public Library on this tour. The garden was originally named in memory of Geri Lester, a long time Charlevoix summer resident. It was originally planted in 2006 and has featured many summer performances and delightful additions over the years, including whimsical art and sculptures. In 2018, the library board and donors, Mike and Rhea Dow chose Site Planning to update the design and replant the garden since it had become overgrown. We have added a stage area for concerts and other events along with many interactive areas for children. The garden features a Welcome Tree Arch, designed and built by artist John Goss and donated by Craig and Debbie Mann. The Sound Garden area features instruments by artist Tom Kaufman and bells donated by Lynne and Mason Rosenthal. The Kiwanis of Charlevoix donated the drums. Windward, the wind sculpture by artist Peter Griz, was donated by Julie Burgess in honor of her late husband Larry Burgess. Julie was a long-time employee of the library and Larry, a longtime volunteer. The water feature, originally donated by the Charlevoix Evening Garden Club, has been expanded and given more prominence. The new stage area will give future performers a solid and level base for their equipment and parents a place to sit while children play. We want to thank the Friends of the Charlevoix Library for donating the Adirondack chairs and tables for that area. While visiting our library we hope you will view the sculptures around our building and several other garden spaces.

Site Planning serves all of Northern Michigan. Our mission is to design interiors and landscapes that work in harmony with the surrounding environment for future generations to enjoy.

CHARMING FAMILY HOME HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN

CREATED BY IMPACT BUILDING

1495 TRACY LANE | PETOSKEY, MI 49770 3400 sq/ft

3 Bedrooms

2.5 Full Baths

Impact Building is focusing on affordable home building in Northern Michigan and designed this home to fit a home build budget of about $325,000. With modern and spacious rooms, the plan includes plenty of light and open spaces, a simple-efficient floor plan and many focal points. The large open kitchen has granite counter tops along with a fireplace in the adjacent family room. Keeping young families in mind, builder Adam Vertican installed luxury vinyl plank flooring in most rooms with carpet in two upstairs bedrooms. A large mud room with cubby closets will come in handy organizing coats and gloves. The second floor has a large laundry area adjacent to three bedrooms, including the master suite with a connecting bath. To keep heating costs low, an energy-efficient heating system powered by natural gas was installed along with superior closed-cell spray-foam insulation. Impact Building worked closely with suppliers like Preston Feather to keep building material costs under control and find alternative cost-effective materials when needed. A large front and back deck make the home inviting and ready for entertaining.

This log home cottage was originally built in 2002. The living room, kitchen, dining, laundry, stairwell, and second level bedroom remodel was completed in October of 2018. The goal was to update and brighten up a traditional log home. Wood tends to darken over time so much of the interior cedar paneling, log overlays and walls were painted a soft white. The area between the living room and the dining area was opened and wood flooring replaced carpet and tile. The existing wood floor was sanded and stained to match the new material. The kitchen bar was removed and an island installed to allow for better traffic flow. Cabinetry was painted, new counter tops and tile backsplash were added along with new wallpaper. Â The old color palette of red and green has been changed to an updated blue and white. New furnishings and window treatments also reflect the new color scheme. The interior area has been transformed into a brand-new comfortable space.

You are welcomed into the home by a traditional double column gabled entry porch. This classic cottage design features an open floor plan with cathedral ceilings in the living room and plenty of natural light to capture views. The fireplace with built-ins serves as a beautiful focal point. The home has a master suite on the main level as well as another guest suite. The kitchen is warm and welcoming with a central island and plenty of counter space. A 3/4 bath is located off the mudroom / laundry area which also features a beach entry to minimize sand coming into the home. Ship-lap finish is throughout the first floor living spaces. The second floor has two guest bedrooms with dormers facing the view, a full bathroom, loft area and plenty of storage. We employed an efficient use of space with four bedrooms and four baths in just under 3000 square feet. The 2 1/2 car garage has stairs leading to a bonus room. The exterior finishes are low maintenance using a mixture of lap siding, shake siding and board and batten detailing. Standing seam metal roofing emphasizes the window seat and highlights exterior porches. Raised panels also highlight bump outs and other exterior details.
