Dear Friends, As with every summer, we look forward to seeing the return of friends, most especially after being apart for the majority of last year. In addition to enjoying all that northern Michigan offers this time of year, we are eagerly anticipating the opening of the Offield Family Pavilion in mid-August. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible community and dedicated supporters, the new wing will offer 92 new private patient rooms and a state-of-the-art surgical suite. The new facility will match the quality of care provided at McLaren Northern Michigan, which means it will not only be a better place for patients to recover, it will also be a better place for our dedicated medical staff to practice. Thank you to everyone who made a gift in support of this important project that will have an immeasurable impact on patients, family members and visitors for years to come. In this issue, you’ll learn about the new McLaren Northern Michigan orthopedics practice and meet some of the practitioners who are committed to delivering exceptional care. We are also excited to share that Mako robotic knee replacement surgery is now available. Mako enables a more precise surgical experience for joint replacement. You’ll also read about enhancements to the Cheboygan Campus that were made possible due to gifts through the McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation. As always, we extend gratitude to you. Your support makes McLaren Northern Michigan one of the best hospitals in the nation to receive care. Thank you for your commitment, your advocacy, and your confidence.

Growing Our Services: Orthopedics Thank you for supporting our Orthopedic Program McLaren Northern Michigan has added five new orthopedic providers and now offers robotic-arm assisted joint replacement. Gifts from generous donors to the Unrestricted Fund helped the hospital acquire the Mako SmartRobotics System for joint replacements as well as provide for a new radiology suite and renovate the entire office space. “We are grateful to the thousands of donors who support our patients through their generous gifts,” said Todd Burch, President and CEO, McLaren Northern Michigan. “The expansion of our orthopedics team and the acquisition of the Mako demonstrates not only our commitment to provide outstanding health care but also the commitment of our donors.” Mako SmartRobotics is an innovative solution for many people suffering from painful arthritis or degeneration of the knee. Mako SmartRobotics joint replacement robot allows for a minimally invasive quicker surgery, more precise cuts, more personalized knee replacement, and a faster recovery time. (Read more on page 4.)

Located in the McLaren Medical Office Building, McLaren Northern Michigan Orthopedic Services now provides advanced care in total knee, hip, and shoulder joints; sports medicine; and foot and ankle reconstruction in addition to our 24/7 orthopedic trauma coverage. The practice offers in-office x-ray backed with the full radiology services on the Petoskey Campus—providing patients a convenient, safe experience. Your generous giving helps support these and other services, providing northern Michigan residents and visitors with access to excellent orthopedic care close to home. Thank you for your support! Gifts to the Unrestricted Fund allow the hospital the flexibility to direct funds to health care needs as they arise. Over the past few years, thousands of donors have chosen to support these ongoing needs of the hospital. Every gift—no matter the size—is important and makes an impact. Meet Our New Orthopedic Physicians Christopher Kennedy, DPM, AACFAS Podiatric Surgeon

Angus Goetz, DO, FAOAO Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Kennedy chose McLaren Northern Michigan when looking for a practice with a focus on quality, compassion, and community. Dr. Kennedy specializes in sportsrelated injuries, fracture management, total ankle replacement, bunion repair, deformity corrections, as well as diabetic limb preservation and reconstruction.

Passionate about health care since he was a young child, Dr. Goetz chose orthopedic care because of the memories he had shadowing his grandfather on orthopedic hospital rounds. Introducing Mako Robotic Surgery Mako SmartRobotics combines three key components, 3D CT-based planning, AccuStop haptic technology and insightful data analytics, into one platform that has shown better outcomes for total knee, total hip, and partial knee patients. The robot uses 3D planning software to help the orthopedic surgeon understand more about an individual’s unique anatomy to create a customized joint replacement surgical plan for each patient. During surgery, the surgeon guides the robotic arm, and Mako’s AccuStop technology helps the surgeon stay within precisely planned boundaries, helping to protect healthy bone. This higher level of precision makes for a safer procedure with a quicker recovery.

“The Mako is the most advanced robotic technology available today to assist total and partial knee replacements. I’ve performed many of these surgeries and have seen the positive outcome for my patients. I’m excited to now offer this here at McLaren.” Angus Goetz, MD Orthopedic Surgery Medical Director, McLaren Orthopedic Services

Congratulations to the many caregivers who have received Guardian Angel awards in the past year for outstanding patient care. Guardian Angel awards give patients and family members a way to say “thank you” for the care provided at a medical office visit, emergency visit, outpatient procedure, or inpatient stay. Guardian Angel gifts also provide a way to support the hospital through a financial gift that will help future patients. Recipients receive a special pin and certificate and are honored among their colleagues.
