WELDING COURSE OFFERINGS COMPREHENSIVE INDUSTRIAL WELDING (CIW) For the student that wants to enter the welding industry, this course provides 760 clock hours of employer-based, real-world welding training, offered by instructors with diverse industry experience. Students spend 80% of their time in the welding lab, and classroom learning is focused on welding fundamentals and building skills to be successful members of the workforce. Our curriculum includes welding technology and blueprint reading, oxyacetylene cutting and brazing, welder mathematics, welding automation, manual plasma cutting, CNC plasma cutting operations, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, and an introduction to advanced pipe welding. Through the course, students will complete fabrication projects allowing them to put their skills to practical use. Students will have opportunities to earn numerous welder qualifications and Accredited Testing Facility (ATF) certifications in all welding processes, using various metals including carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel.
BASIC WELDING This course provides instruction that will provide students an opportunity to develop knowledge and skill application in various welding processes.
ORNAMENTAL WELDING This course will focus on plasma cutting, GMAW (MIG) welding, forming and fabrication of linear stock, steel and “found” (recycled) metal projects. Students will have the opportunity to create three take home projects.
CNC PLASMA TABLE OPERATOR This course covers CNC plasma table machine set-up and operation, visual machine design layout for job set-up, coordinating systems and knowledge & use of the CNC shape library.
CNC PLASMA TABLE PROGRAMMER This course will prepare you to develop designs with 2-D metal projects utilizing, CAM (computer aided machining) program and then cut these projects out using CNC (computer numeric controlled) plasma cutting table.

ACCREDITED TEST FACILITY (ATF) WELDER QUALIFICATION TESTING Our ATF designation through the American Welding Society (AWS) allows IAI to test and certify welders in accordance with specified industry codes and produce qualification test records required by the company or welder.

WELDER EARNING POTENTIAL TALENT ON DISPLAY As part of the Welding curriculum and placement services, IAI hosts a talent expo, where students can highlight their skills, talents, and commitment to potential employers. Students completing the CIW course can expect to be able to move immediately into the welding/ metal fabrication industry as an entry-level welder with numerous opportunities throughout the state and outside of the state.

The Industrial Arts Institute (IAI), Northern Michigan’s Premier Welding School, is licensed by the State of Michigan Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs and is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization that specializes in preparing graduates for rewarding careers in the welding industry since founded in 2014. Located in Onaway, Michigan our stateof-the-art facility spans more than 47,000 square feet with 44 welding booths fully equipped with industry standard equipment, as well as some of the newest technology in the welding industry.
