Artist Spotlight: Mark Middleton When did you first start drawing/painting: I started drawing and painting at the age of 9. My parents recognized that I had some talent early on and started entering my pieces in local competitions winning numerous awards. Please give us a little background on yourself: Sport formed a huge part of my life as I played rugby, water polo and swam on a provincial level. I had a Tertiary education in Nature Conservation which gave me the opportunity to teach people about the natural environment through walks and field trips to game parks. I have been involved in various projects including the conversation of rhino, cheetah and the rare Taita Falcon and was involved in training of the field guides. I have had various exhibitions of my work throughout the country. I also exhibited at the Palace of the Lost City. Along with private commissions, I have also done illustrations for a series of books on Africa including the African Safari Journal, Ethnic Tribes of Africa, Fauna and Flora and the Fly-Fishing Journal. Where do you get your inspiration for what you paint: Being a South African game ranger with a background in nature conservation, my primary inspiration is the amazing African wildlife that was present in my day-to day. Africa is in my heart and working with nature has always been such an inspiration for my art. What are some awards and accolades you have received for your work: Since relocation to the United States four years ago, I have been so thrilled and grateful for the success of my work. I participated in ArtPrize (the largest international art competition) last year in Grand Rapids and was fortunate to be recognized in the top 20 artists out of 1536 participants and top 5 out of 918 artists in the 2-D category. I also participated in the Bay Harbor Arts Festival in July 2014 and was awarded first place “best of show” for the event. 2014 was an amazing year for my art. A Stage, a Performer, a Venue for Memorable Gatherings By Liz Firebaugh, CKD

I am often asked about incorporating the latest trends into a kitchen design. But, kitchen trends come and go; colors, finishes, and materials fall in and out of favor. Though, some trends are considered timeless and are not affected by changes in taste and style. A kitchen design that has longevity is focused on those elements that are here to stay. Here are several of my consistent 122

recommendations for design elements that have evolved, but have definitive staying power. HARBORSIR.COM

Pantries Walk-in pantries, always a coveted kitchen feature, are moving beyond storage into the realm of the multi-purpose task room. Countertops, sinks, built-in cutting boards, appliance storage and even food prep have changed the way we view this footprint. The redesigned pantry can even act as a service kitchen, and makes a staging area for serving or keeping the real mess out of the kitchen. And, this re-imagined pantry requires good lighting for a variety of tasks.

Message/Docking Center Message areas located near or in the kitchen can feature a desk, a file drawer for schoolwork and appliance warranties, a message board for reminders and schedules, and even a pencil and paper, because yes, we still need them in this automated world. But, electronics are here to stay; accommodating them during the design phase can greatly impact their convenience and function. The house security controls, music access, and a docking station for smart phones and tablets all fit nicely in the message area, and a docking outlet near the cook or prep area can be used for online recipes.

Drawers Drawers, drawers, drawers: they are everywhere. Never again will something be out of reach, pushed into the far corner of dark cabinet. Deep drawers hold pots, pans, and dishes. Microwaves and refrigerators are now found in drawers, and even most sinks (but not the farmhouse style) can accommodate a drawer specially made to accept the plumbing chase. Drawers are easier to organize and clean, and they become work-savers with one easy-open action, instead of two when opening a roll-out in a cabinet.

Good Lighting Under cabinet lighting for tasks on the kitchen countertop is a must. Lighting inside cabinetry as well as inside drawers is another new way to “open” up the space. Decorative lighting above the island or peninsula is beautiful and functional and can reflect a current trend, and then can be easily changed out for a new look. Lighting on dimmers is always a nice ambient touch.

Maximize Storage Maximize lower storage, because the higher the space, the harder it is to access. Upper cabinets, sometimes to the ceiling, can be utilized for glassware, seasonal dishes or serving pieces not used everyday. Storage tricks utilize the toe kick space for low drawers or toe kick step ladders. Increasing backsplash depth and adding sliding doors creates storage, while still allowing for standard countertop depth when doors are closed. A designated cabinet for trash and recyclables is a popular request, and an automated opening is an innovative feature. Custom drawer inserts stow knives and utensils, while narrow pull-out cabinets can store spices and oils or serving trays, baking sheets, and cutting boards. A good layout balances maximized storage with function and aesthetics.

As a kitchen and bath designer, I am aware of industry trends before they emerge. I can say from experience that the genuinely timeless elements of kitchen design are those that not only please the eye, but also save time, reduce work, and increase convenience. Styles change, but the best elements, such as those above, are here to stay.

American kitchens are many things: workrooms, assembly lines, family meeting places, and entertainment centers. To meet varied client needs, my role is to work as an artist and facilitator, guiding the process and often influencing the outcome, using a bank of client information to determine what is best for the job. Decisions are based not only on decorative style, but also on lifestyle, and I will take into account a wealth of details gleaned through conversation, informal drawings, photographs, or a list of client wishes and must-haves. To initiate the design process, I might ask: » Is the kitchen in a primary home or an extended family cottage? » Does the household have children, or is it composed of an active single or empty nesters? » Is dinner a sit-down affair, or do household members come and go on different schedules? » Tell me about entertaining. Are gatherings small and casual or large and formal? Every detail counts in the final design, and it helps to communicate well and often. It is through this process that design ideas come to life. Good design follows the rules, but knows when to bend. Likewise, as a kitchen designer, I provide my own guidelines, but also those of the homeowner. I love pulling together their dreams and ideas, while nurturing their vision into a practical reality. A well-designed space evokes the homeowner’s personality and follows the dictates of good design technique. Alona Kelly, Designer Originally from Ukraine, owner and designer of PEcado Handbags and Accessories, Alona Podoliak Kelly, started with designing clothes at age of 14 and with life challenges and transformations through the years, finally opened her first retail showroom in the summer of 2013 in Petoskey, Michigan. “Every little girl and boy has a dream job. A job that may not always be their final stop in life when they grow up but definitely something they are fascinated about at that time. I was not an exception – I grew up in a middle class family that struggled financially from time to time. Dreaming seemed to be the only thing that did not require finances”, Alona laughs. “I was dreaming about becoming the next generation Coco Chanel or Karl Lagerfeld - dreaming about becoming a fashion designer!” “I started when I was 6 or 7 years old helping my grandma and my mom with sewing, knitting, cross-stitching and other projects. I loved it”, Alona says. “It was so fun and entertaining to me watching my mom putting different pieces together that would turn out to be my dress or a skirt, or a pair of pants”. Taking some fashion design and tailoring classes while also graduating from high school gave me enough basic knowledge to understand the concept of design principles and techniques. By the time I turned 16, I was already making custom designed garments for family members and friends, and by 19, for private customers. I would stay up until 6 o’clock in the morning just to finish a piece and look at the final result before I went to bed. Excitement of transformation from a few scraps of material to an amazing finished piece was so big for me. So as the fear of either going to college and keep doing what I loved so much day in and day out...the idea of losing that excitement and that drive and get bored with sewing was so big, that it pushed me into a totally different field instead - interpretation. Always curious about different countries, their culture, languages and traditions gave me incentive to go to college to become an interpreter (Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, English languages) and be able to learn and experience all those things on my own. Nevertheless, I continued to design and study sewing techniques through the college years. Coming to the United States in 2009 was a new chapter in my life. An unexpected opportunity of working and learning about different types of genuine leather while employed with a local designer and realization that I don’t have to work for someone else to enjoy what I do, helped me to open my own business in the summer of 2012”. Since then, Alona channels her artistic appreciation and creativity into all of her collections, finding inspiration throughout her life and the world at large. She designs for a confident woman with exceptional taste - one who demands a versatile wardrobe in which she feels polished and impeccable. 162 160
