Photography Exhibition Juror, Mount Clemens native Jenny Risher, received her bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies. Risher released her first book in 2013, HeartSoul Detroit, in which she highlights portraits of prominent Detroiters. The photography in Jenny’s book will be featured this summer in CTAC’s upcoming Detroit @ CTAC exhibition.

The Clarke Historical Library, Molson Art Collection of Children’s Book Illustrations Fifty-two original works of art created as book illustrations from the Clarke Historical Library’s Molson Art Collection at Central Michigan University will be on display in the Edith Gilbert Gallery through April 5. Francis Molson, a retired CMU English professor and former chair of the English department, and his wife Mary Lois Molson, a former second grade teacher, have donated over 50 pieces of original artwork which they have collected over several years. The collection includes work by prominent and talented artists in the field of children’s book illustration such as Thomas Locker, Michael McCurdy, Trina Schart Hyman, Leo & Diane Dillon, Michael Hague, Jerry Pinckney, Alice & Martin Provensen, David Small, Gennady Spirin, and David Wisniewski. Watercolor paintings, pen and ink drawings, cut paper artwork and pencil illustrations are all part of the donated collection. Francis Molson said he and his wife feel the donation will be both educational and fun to view. The couple hopes the collection will expand in the future.

February 14-March 22: ANNE MORNINGSTAR Anne Morningstar is an interdisciplinary artist whose work embodies animation, film, book arts, and papermaking. Her work has been exhibited nationally in galleries, juried shows, film festivals, and traveling exhibitions. In this exhibit, Morningstar’s series of paper paintings illustrate the ecological system that Lake Michigan has been nourishing since it was first created. Travel to all depths of our great lake and be introduced to its original inhabitants, both past and present. This series will also shed light on the nonnative species that are invading these waters and threaten the environmental balance that Lake Michigan once knew.

March 28-April 26: KITCHEN PAINTERS This group of art enthusiasts started out as a small collective of people interested in gathering on a weekly basis to paint, share ideas and inspirations. Moving from several locations, the Kitchen Painters found a permanent home at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in 1981. Since then, the Kitchen Painters have not wavered from their initial inspiration, getting together each Monday afternoon in the Visual Arts room at CTAC. There the painters share their knowledge and discoveries so that as a whole each member benefits from the experience of the other. 4

Call For Young Writers! The 12th Annual Young Writers Juried Exposition is open to all elementary, middle and high school student writers in the CharlevoixEmmet ISD (or home school students in Charlevoix or Emmet Counties). Students are invited to submit one work of poetry, prose, or one of both during the online submission dates, April 8-18, 2014. Go to crookedtree.org to submit. Crooked Tree Arts Center is offering two $500 scholarships for graduating high school seniors living in Emmet and Charlevoix counties and pursuing fields of study in the arts. This includes visual arts, performing arts, theatre, dance and music. One scholarship recipient will be chosen from each county. The Award recipients will be announced at their school’s awards assembly and are also invited to CTAC’s Youth Arts Awards Night. Applications are available at area high school counseling offices as well as the Arts Center website, www.crookedtree.org. The deadline for consideration is March 31, 2014. YOU’RE INVITED Young Writers Expo & Culinary Arts Showcase: Saturday, May 3, 2014 2:00-4:00 pm

Docent Tours: Through the winter, students participating in the docent tours will be looking at fine art they may already be familiar with. They may have seen the art at the library, at home, or in school—anywhere they’ve looked at children’s books. The Molson Art Collection is a selection of paintings, drawings, and collage work from children’s picture book illustrations. The student project that is part of the tour is also based on a children’s book called The Dot by Peter Reynolds. Docents read the story of Vashti, a young girl who learns that to do art you have to start by ‘making a mark and seeing where it takes you’ and then having the students follow Vashti’s example.

• Michael Menghini was recently accepted, upon audition, to participate in the Kennedy Center’s Ballet Master Class Series. By the end of April, Michael will have traveled to Washington D.C. four times to attend lectures, open rehearsals, master classes and performances by Matthew Bourne, Joffrey Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. • The 2014 Summer Ballet Audition Season is in full swing. Our preprofessional ballet students and parents travel to Chicago every weekend from the first weekend of January through the end of February for auditions. These auditions determine where our students will train this summer. • Crooked Tree Arts Center will host Deeply Rooted Dance Theater’s Michigan audition site in early March. • SAVE THE DATE: Performance at Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center, June 13 & 14.

Crooked Tree Youth Orchestra The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program and Crooked Tree Youth Orchestras are celebrating their 14th season!

The Dorothy Gerber Strings Program offers string instrument instruction to hundreds of students in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet Counties—and now Cheboygan County, too! This year, Cheboygan Public Schools as well as Harbor Light Christian School in Harbor Springs began offering string classes for their students. Students from all area schools will join together for the annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 18, at Boyne City High School. Winter Concert: The theme for the Crooked Tree Youth Orchestra this season was tied to the Great Storm of 1913 that rocked the Great Lakes 100 years ago. At the annual Winter Concert on Sunday, January 26, the youth orchestra featured several pieces related to this historical event, including Into the Storm by Robert Smith and Ghost Ship by Michael Story.

New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center Brrr! Despite the cold weather, the Arts Center had many warm bodies

on-hand to help ring in the New Year. This seventh annual celebration marked the return of several audience favorites in the theatre and galleries, and several new performances on the street for “Midnight at 9.” It was a carnival-type atmosphere with LED hula-hoopers, a stiltwalker and fire poi spinner just prior to the ball-drop. Programming and workshops were provided by CTAC instructors, area artists and organizations including Blissfest Music Organization and Petoskey District Library among others. Olivia Leidall (right) an area middle school student, was the featured artist for 2014. Her artwork was used for the t-shirts and admission buttons for the event.

A Long History of Supporting the Arts

Laura Chaney Rand Shackleton Growing up in Oregon, where she attended college, graduated and held her first teaching position, Laura didn’t think anywhere else could be as beautiful as home. Then she visited northern Michigan in the 1970s. As a high school student Rand spent one glorious summer working at the Harbor Inn and had always dreamed of returning to northern Michigan. After a 25-year detour which was spent at MSU and then working as an “ad-man” at Ross Roy in Detroit, he finally made it. Laura was running the general store in Cross Village when she first met Rand at Wycamp Lake. He was living in an 11-foot trailer with his grandmother, celebrating his return to the area, with a twoyear “Harold and Maude-esque” adventure later chronicled in his screenplay, “Free Spirits.” According to Rand, he invited Laura out to their camp on his first day in town, and they have been together ever since.

Rand’s interest in film began when he was working at Ross Roy and relying on film companies to do his commercials. When Sony came out with an 8mm camera, he was finally able to make his own documentaries. His first video was for CTAC. Edith Gilbert, one of CTAC’s founders, had written a script, which was used for fundraising purposes. Rand has been making videos for CTAC and other organizations ever since.

In his role as video documentarian for CTAC Rand attends many events. One of his favorites is the annual New Year’s Eve event. “Everything comes alive at once,” says Rand. “It’s inspiring.” And that inspiration is what he likes best about CTAC. “I like to spend time with creative people. I don’t know any other place like it. It’s a beehive of people—not just a gallery—with so many different facets happening within the walls.” The couple’s shared love for northern Michigan includes a strong belief in the importance of the arts. “Arts and creativity make us better people,” explains Laura, a school teacher. “It is the best hope for our children.” Changes in school curriculums and budgets have impacted the availability of arts in students’ lives. “If children are left alone and allowed to be creative, it leads to the development of problem-solving skills.” Laura appreciates the role CTAC plays in supporting schools and providing artistic and creative opportunities for students. “Our community is fortunate to have CTAC at its core,” adds Rand. “It’s inspiring and uplifting to be in such a place.” Like Laura, Rand feels strongly that creativity is at the core of everything we do. “Without creativity, there is no innovation, thus, there is no problem-solving. No matter what your field or strengths, creativity makes you better at what you’re doing.” Rand’s hope for CTAC’s future? “That the Arts Center continues to reinvent itself; that’s the essence of creative innovation in itself.”

It felt strange to drive by the Arts Center over the holidays and not see the OPEN flag fluttering in the wind. Although the Arts Center was officially closed, a few dedicated staff were inside prepping the entire building and the Carnegie Building for our family friendly New Year’s Eve at the Arts Center celebration. It was amazing to think about how busy the Arts Center is leading up to the holiday hiatus. Our wonderful staff needs time to regroup and reenergize so they will be ready for challenges we will face when we start the new year.

On January 30, 2014, ArtServe Michigan released the third installment of the Creative State Michigan report. This report details economic and social data from 424 nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, representing an estimated 21 percent of the more than 2,000 cultural groups operating statewide. The data reveals that these organizations contributed more than one-half billion dollars in expenditures alone to the Michigan economy in FY 2011. To learn more: www.CreativeStateMI.org. The most compelling information for us is this fun fact: Michigan’s arts and cultural destinations continue to demonstrate their essential value to the state’s tourism industry, generating more than $2 billion in state tourism revenues in 2011. That represents 16 percent of the state’s total tourism revenues in that year – more than golf, boating and sailing, hunting and fishing, and hiking and biking combined! We greet visitors from around the world, especially during our busy summer months. So, this tourism data wasn’t a big surprise to us. I’m sharing this report at the Petoskey Chamber of Commerce State of the Community luncheon on Friday, February 7. So by the time you read this note from me, many of our local business leaders will have learned how the arts impact our state and our region. Are the arts relevant to the economy? You bet your golf club and your fishin’ pole!!!

On Wednesday, November 6, 2013 we held our first meeting of the Crooked Tree Arts Center Strategic Planning Team. This is the beginning of a 4-6 month project to update and develop a strategic plan to guide CTAC during the next five years and beyond. Jim Shrier, a CTAC Committee member and volunteer, is serving as our planning facilitator and there is lots of data gathering happening right now! The Planning Team of Bill Millar, Tony Ryner, Bill Collins, Dana Andrews, Elizabeth Pollie, Valerie St. Pierre Smith, Cindy McSurely and Liz Ahrens will develop a plan based upon the data and ideas that have been collected. The committees, staff and board are simultaneously meeting and will adopt a plan in early spring. We will share the plan with you in the summer newsletter! –Bill Millar, President Board of Directors

Art Tree Artist:

Joan Duval Tebo Walloon Lake watercolor artist Joan Tebo has created watercolor reproduction cards based on her love of northern Michigan and her whimsical take on the holidays. Bears sledding, woodland animals caroling, sailboats on the lake reflect her joy of painting. Joan has been an active member of Crooked Tree Arts Center for many years. She paints with the Kitchen Painters meeting weekly at CTAC, and is a member of the Walloon Lake Arts Club. Joan holds a degree from Michigan State University in Fine Arts and has a Master’s in Education. She was once an elementary school teacher in the Gaylord Community Schools. All the participating artists, musicians, film makers, entrepreneurs, and lecturers are shaking up Detroit! Watch for a special mailer in the spring with all the dates and not-to-be-missed events!
