ELIZABETH POLLIE: THE HOURS—UNFOLDING THE IDEA OF A DAY GILBERT GALLERY, PETOSKEY ABOUT: Artist Elizabeth Pollie invites you to experience the day unfolding through the eyes of the artist. This exhibit of paintings and sketches takes you through the hours of a day with the emphasis on light, ritual and experience. Elizabeth was taken to museums at an early age, enrolled in classes by her parents and influenced by her father’s love and practice of art and architecture. “Working within the field of visual arts never seemed like a choice, but rather a place of true belonging.” She enrolled in college art classes while still in high school and went on to receive an education at The College for Creative Studies where she later taught. Harboring a deep love of travel and art history, Elizabeth has combined her adventures with her painting practice. Her paintings have received much national recognition and awards. She is a Signature Member of the Oil Painters Of America.

WIND & SAIL: PAINTINGS, PASTELS, BOAT DESIGNS & PHOTOGRAPHS RICK FORD, GRETCHEN DORIAN & FREDERICK FORD, JR. BONFIELD GALLERY, PETOSKEY ABOUT: Three artists take us on a nautical journey. Inspired by the realist traditions of the late 19th century, Rick Ford has been mastering his pastel, oil and watercolor techniques for over four decades. Educated as a graphic artist at the American Academy of Art in Chicago during the early 1970s, Rick Ford spent the beginning of his professional career in commercial advertising. His honors include awards from the Pastel Society of America and the Scarab Club of Detroit. Father of Rick Ford and naval architect, Frederick Ford, Jr. created many memorable and stunning vessels that sail the Great Lakes. He passed away on August 1, 2014, at the age of 90. Ford’s Great Lakes series boats are now being restored as classics. Maritime photographer and Harbor Springs native, Gretchen Dorian, will also pay homage to sailing. A maritime Michiganbased photographer, Gretchen specializes in the photography of boats, power or sail, on water or ice, around the globe. Her photographs have been published in Wooden Boat Journal, ESPN Magazine, SAIL, Sailing World, Wall Street Journal, and Seahorse of the UK. ABOUT: Marilyn Stockwell-Colestock is an intuitive painter who, over the years, has been accepted into many juried shows locally and nationally. She paints animated, loose impressions, as she strives to catch the spirit of her subject. “With classical music or a recording of the ocean surf as an accompaniment, I love to paint whimsical, eccentric images—to let my imagination and emotions of the moment carry me along.” Marilyn describes herself as a “slightly wacky old lady and award-winning artist.”

Now, 34 years later, the artists still meet each Monday from 1:00-3:00 pm at CTAC. The once small group has grown to include not only retirees who are pursuing their favorite hobby, but also young adults who squeeze in art between school and work. The common thread connecting all Kitchen Painters is their passion for art and painting. Members share their knowledge and discoveries so that as a whole the group benefits from the experiences of each other. Thursday, June 18 Opening same night as Downtown Petoskey Gallery Walk!

A Long History of Supporting the Arts

MARGARET AND WILLIAM WHITE Walking into Margaret and William White’s Torch Lake home is like walking into one of Margaret’s paintings. It is a beautiful backdrop to their numerous works of art on display. The Whites have been working in side-by-side rooms every day for nearly 33 years. It began in their art classrooms at Southfield Lathrup High School where Margaret was the drawing teacher and William taught commercial art and culminated in their individual art studios in their northern Michigan home.

The Whites have been working in side-by-side rooms every day for nearly 33 years. It began in their art classrooms at Southfield Lathrup High School where Margaret was the drawing teacher and William taught commercial art and culminated in their individual art studios in their northern Michigan home.

In 1994, the Whites both decided to retire, to pursue art full-time and see if they could become professional artists. “On our last day of school, he carried me over the threshold and out the door of the high school,” said Margaret, laughing. The following summer they designed and built their house on Torch Lake and have been working on their art ever since. “We work all the time,” shares William. “We’re in our studio every day.” Since coming north they have been in five 2-person shows and are currently producing work for their first 3-man show with artist Charles Murphy this July at the Twisted Fish Gallery in Elk Rapids. One of the benefits of working together and both being working artists is critiquing each other’s work. “We’re kind but honest,” says Margaret. Margaret and William were members of both the Crooked Tree Arts Center and Artcenter Traverse City prior to the recent merger. They first became involved in Crooked Tree Arts Center when CTAC’s Visual Arts Director, Gail DeMeyere, invited them to participate in a still life exhibition called Gatherings in 2007 and again as part of the 2011 Let Them Eat Cake. They have donated artwork to D’Art for Art, exhibited work in CTAC’s sales gallery and “enjoy being involved; it’s so beautifully run,” says William. “It’s a pleasure to stop by whether we’re in a current show or just visiting.” For Traverse City, they have entered the annual Art and the Garden exhibition, attended lectures at The Box and attended last spring’s Vermeer Dinner fundraiser. “We were very excited when we learned of the merger,” says Margaret. “What a thrill for Traverse City to become part of Crooked Tree.” “I feel like they did what’s best for the arts in northern Michigan,” agrees William. “I look forward to Crooked Tree bringing all their energies that are in Petoskey to Traverse City.” “Our main focus is our art,” says Margaret, who thought of nothing but art since a young age. “It was something I did well and brought a tremendous amount of joy.” “Would we do it again?” poses William, “Absolutely, it’s a joyful place to go to every day!”

IT'S DEMO AND RENO TIME!’ Our kitchen in Petoskey is undergoing a major renovation. This space is used every day for classes, meetings and catering. For over ten years we’ve offered a super popular Culinary Series in a less than desirable kitchen. The new kitchen will feature properly vented cooktop and pipes that don’t freeze—obviously much needed upgrades! Thanks to a matching grant from the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, along with funds from the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Community Foundation and Charlevoix County Community Foundation, we are mindfully planning a great space for so many uses. A mighty group of dedicated volunteers are guiding this project: Carole Carroll, Lynn Carson, Bill Millar, Gail Willens, Charles Randolph and Nick White. We are grateful for their efforts. We need a few more dollars for dishwashers, support for sinks, cash for countertops….you get the idea! Let us know if you would like to donate. On target to be complete by end of August! Thursday, May 21 10:00 am-4:00 pm & 6:00-7:00 pm You are invited for a sneak peek of our plans! Learn about our expanded culinary series and how the renovated kitchen will be a great asset to CTAC and our community. Light refreshments served all day!

EXPLORE THE WORLD WITH A FRIEND —OR MAKE SOME NEW ONES~! CTAC is headed to Europe! Discover Ireland or Italy in a small group setting, no more than 24 travelers. Yet, with all the transition happening at CTAC these days, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce or re-introduce you to our wonderfully dedicated staff. Of course, this is just a quick view of their work…

A DESTINATION FOR THE ARTS It is with great anticipation that I look forward to the 2015 summer season. The days will be bright blue with warm breezes dancing across the landscape and Crooked Tree Arts Center has crafted exceptional programming to perfectly complement the season. This will be our first year to offer programming at both the Petoskey and Traverse City campuses, with a broad offering of activities and events planned throughout the region. Outstanding Exhibits, Art Fairs, Performing Arts, Educational opportunities and Social Events are the keystone for an engaging summer. Crooked Tree’s Mission is to Inspire and Enrich Lives through the Arts. We have become a platform that connects our community to the Arts, a platform for art education, and a platform for connecting artists to each other. Our Vision is to establish a regional presence that expands our community reach and is nationally-recognized. It is a regional presence that spans across Northern Michigan and is creating a meaningful Destination for the Arts. Finally, I want to thank everyone who works hard to make Crooked Tree successful. Our membership is broad-based and is a direct connection to the community we support. Our volunteers ensure the smooth delivery of our programming efforts. Our Board members provide critical leadership and act as ambassadors. Our dedicated professional staff works incredibly hard and produces an excellent fruit for their effort. Tony Ryner, Chairman Board of Directors 18

Alex Dailey/Front Desk: Alex is a know-it-all! She has to be, as she directs all the activity at our Petoskey front desk, including ticket sales, class registration, art sales and reservations. She led our annual Young Writers Expo this year, too! Bob Damman/Facilities Manager: Bob handles the physical needs of our buildings in Petoskey: The Arts Center, the attached Carnegie Building, the dance studio at 418 E. Mitchell—a beautiful space for our dance students! His humor and demeanor keep us smiling! Carina Hume/Business Manager: All things financial, human resources, scholarships and, for 2015-16, Carina will direct the Performing Arts Series. Carina has an eye for detail and is our best editor! She works closely with our Finance Committee. Cindy McSurely/Development Director: Fundraising is Cindy’s focus along with special events such as Swirl, Chalk & Chocolate, Art and the City and other programs she provides guidance on…and, how could we forget…D’Art for Art! Gail DeMeyere/Visual Arts Director: The beautiful and inspiring exhibits are designed and curated by Gail, as well as managing the Art Tree Gallery. It’s amazing how frequently she is asked about the paint colors she selects for the galleries! Heather Raue/Director of Dance: Heather’s combination of teaching and choreography impacts the lives of hundreds of young dancers each year in our CTAC School of Ballet. Her students’ achievements are nationally-recognized—as is Heather! Kevin Richardson/Assistant Music Education: Kevin joined our staff in October of 2014 as our Strings Instructor for the Gerber Music Education and the leader of the CTAC Jazz Band. He makes a mean cookie, too! Lucy Blythe/Development Associate: Lucy manages our ever-growing database of members and artists and all membership matters. She’s a foodie….so you should hang with her at Swirl! Megan DeWindt/Program Director: Megan balances the work of software platforms, website, e-communication and, as of April, she directs most of our Education Programming, including classes, lectures and special events. Robert Dudd/Music Education Director: Robert leads our Gerber Music Education Program teaching violin, viola, cello and bass and conductor for our CTAC Youth Orchestra. He can be seen frequently staring off into space…he’s a fan of the night sky! And…our TC staff…together these two staff members, along with some of the Petoskeybased staff, will be rolling out great arts happenings at the TC location. Kathryn Pfeifer/Program Administrator: Kathryn was on staff with Artcenter TC when we merged, and we are amazed with her work on the Outdoor Art Fair, Art and Craft Trails and summer workshops. Area artists sing Kathryn’s praises! Megan Kelto/Associate Director: Megan’s our newest addition as she came on board at the end of March 2015. She is taking on all of the new programming in TC, including exhibits, special events, fundraising and collaborations. Megan joined us after working at Interlochen for nine years and we are so delighted to welcome her on staff. And, last, me. Your President/Executive Director. My title was changed to President with the addition of Traverse City as our long-range plan charts an Executive Director in both locations. What do I fill my days with, you ask? Well, stop in anytime and you can spend an hour or so. Together we can write grants, wrangle with legal documents, communicate with board members and plan programming—I’ve got a great job! Best to you— Liz Ahrens P.S. We bid farewell to our Program Director, Valerie St. Pierre Smith, in March as she and her family are moving to Omaha for her new teaching position at U of Nebraska! Good luck, Valerie! And welcome to Ellen Audia, our summer front desk staff.
