Detroit @ CTAC June 05 - September 06, 2014 Crooked Tree Arts Center brings “the D” north for a summer filled with artists, musicians, filmmakers and creative entrepreneurs—enthusiastic individuals perpetually inspired by Detroit. The galleries are filled with artwork of all genres, the theater will stage live performances and film showings, lectures will unfold at the Arts Center, Harbor Springs and Charlevoix libraries and we will even tent the parking lot for a creative industry runway show! Think you know everything that is happening in Detroit? No one does, because it’s a creative entrepreneurial playground—galleries, restaurants, public art, real estate development, pop-ups, gardens—it’s there and CTAC has invited the best of the best north for the summer!

Film Screening: Standing in the Shadows of Motown Location: CTAC Theater This 2002 documentary film directed by Paul Justman is the story of The Funk Brothers, the uncredited and largely unheralded studio musicians handpicked by Berry Gordy. They were the band who recorded and performed Motown’s recordings from 1959 to 1972. This film is rated PG.

Afternoon Lecture: Gilda Snowden Location: CTAC Theater Gilda Snowden has always been drawn to the complexities of nature and history. Painting and relief-based sculpture have always been her primary mediums, specifically documenting the history that is closest to her own personal experience.

Film Screening: Louder than Love: The Grande Ballroom Story and Q&A with Producer Tony D’Annunzio and Laura Grimshaw Location: CTAC Theater The greatest untold story in Rock & Roll history as revealed by the musicians, artists, and people that lived it. While the West Coast was groovin’ to the sounds of the “Summer of Love” in 1967, Detroit was pumping out a hard-driving, gritty, raw sound that was “Louder Than Love” with The Grande Ballroom at the epicenter and serving as the starting point for bands such as MC5, Iggy & The Stooges, Ted Nugent and The Amboy Dukes. This is the story of the hallowed halls that started it all, told by the artists who helped create the legend.

Having recently released her first book, Heart Soul Detroit, in which she highlights portraits of prominent Detroiters, Jenny will share her world of photography from high fashion to photographing Detroit’s movers and shakers.

Jennifer Westwood and Friends in Concert Featuring Dylan Dunbar, Matthew Stahl, Chris Degnore and Jeremy Mackinder Location: CTAC Theater Jennifer Westwood cut her teeth on Detroit Gospel, honed her craft in gritty corner bars, and has earned her stripes to become a premier vocalist/performer in the Rustbelt capital. Recipient of several music awards, including the 2013 Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Acoustic Performance, Jennifer is joined by four of Detroit’s best rock musicians. Matthew fronts Jackie Stahl and the White Russians, and Chris leads the Black Drops. Artist, writer and musician; a founding member of the Destroy All Monsters art collective and co-owner with his wife Colleen Kammer of the Book Beat bookstore in Oak Park, Cary Loren presents an illustrated talk about underground Detroit art and culture, high and low. He’ll journey into some of the past movements, artists, writers and musicians that have made D-town an international mecca for praise, hype, imitation, bottom-feeding, cultural tourism and scorn— with a focus on the Detroit Artists’ Workshop—a collective that celebrates its 50th anniversary this year on November 1st.

Patrick Wise, Artist and Educator Tuesday, July 22, 2014 Award-winning artist, Patrick Wise, is a Petoskey native, artist and educator who works with both Detroit Institute of Arts and Paint Creek Center for Arts, in Arts Education. Wise is teaching the Painting alla Prima Workshop this summer at CTAC.

Derek Weaver, Managing Director 4731 Tuesday, July 29, 2014 Combining savvy real estate skills and passion for changing neighborhoods with art, Weaver took over management of the 4731 Arts Incubator and soon filled it. Weaver’s pet project is the Grand River Creative Corridor—an art project which has brought in 70 artists who have put up graffiti murals and outdoor installations.

Oren Goldenberg, Filmmaker Tuesday, August 19, 2014 Oren Goldenberg lives and works in Detroit’s Cass Corridor. His work has been seen in festivals, theaters, museums, derelict street corners and the World Wide Web. He was a 2013 Visual Arts Kresge Fellow.

Motor City Horns with the Brothers Groove & Thornetta Davis Thursday, August 7, 2014 • 8:00 pm Location: CTAC Theater

The incredible, true story of Rodriguez, the greatest ’70s rock icon who never was. Discovered and recorded by two celebrated producers in a Detroit bar in the late ’60s, his album bombed and he disappeared into obscurity. But, a bootleg recording found its way into apartheid South Africa and, over the next two decades, he became a phenomenon. The film follows the story of two South African fans who set out to find what really happened to their hero.

Film Screening: It Might Get Loud Thursday, June 19 • 7:30 pm • Rated PG This documentary by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim explores the careers and styles of prominent rock musicians Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. Jack White traces his musical background to his childhood in a rundown neighborhood of Detroit. White eventually finds a niche in a garage rock band which paves the way for his future bands, The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. The touchstone of the film is a meeting of the three guitarists in scenes where they not only converse about their influences and techniques, but they also play each other’s songs together.

Film Screening: Grown in Detroit Thursday, June 26 • 7:30 pm • Not Rated Filmmakers Mascha and Manfred Poppenk focus on the urban gardening efforts managed by a public school of 300, mainly African-American, pregnant and parenting teenagers. As part of the curriculum, the girls are taught agriculture skills on the school’s own farm. The young mothers learn the importance of nutritional foods, the process by which these foods arrive at their plates, and ultimately, to become independent and self-empowered through the process of farming.

Artists join together to tell us personal stories

Antonio “Shades” Agee is a Detroit born graffiti artist who has built a vast portfolio of work creating murals for clients such as Chrysler, Ford, Universal Studios, Quicken Loans, and Fiat Motors. Inspired by his jazz musician father, Shades’ work has set the stage for other graffiti artists. His work is in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts and Michigan State University.

Corrie Baldauf brings a new perspective to inner-city Detroit in a video documentary, Frames for the People: A City of Halos. Baldauf has an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. She received a 2011 Kresge Fellowship award for her work and currently is an instructor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

Jeanne Bieri is a Hastings artist who moved to Detroit in 1972 where she earned an MFA in Painting from Wayne State University. She was awarded a Michigan Council for the Arts Grant and was twice a Gold Medal winning artist at the Scarab Club.

Greg Fadell received a BA in Film from the University of Michigan and is a founding member of the Detroit multimedia art collective, AWOL. His current work focuses on exploring a wide range of techniques in the application of paints and pigments, while manifesting what he describes as “life’s everyday stream of abstractions.”

Artists

Jerome Ferretti is a well-known Detroit artist who’s lived in the neighborhood for a more than 30 years. Ferretti comes from a family of bricklayers and learned the trade himself at an apprenticeship school. He studied art at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies where he served as an artist-in-residence blurring the line between mason and artist, sculptor and painter.

Anne Fracassa is a Detroit resident who has studied art all over the world and now works out of her Pioneer Building studio capturing the city she loves. From humble frame homes to barren cross-streets with the city aglow on the horizon—they are poignant reminders that the city’s “renaissance” is likely to bring about the disappearance of many of these beautiful forms.

Mary Fortuna has been active in the Detroit art community for more than 25 years. A BFA graduate of Wayne State University, she has exhibited her work extensively all over Michigan, nationally and internationally. She is a member of the artist collective, The Slippery Weasel Society.

Bruce Giffin has been shooting photos in the city of Detroit for nearly 30 years. He describes himself as “painfully and agonizingly” self-taught, stating that photography has become the air that he breathes. In 2011 Giffin was awarded a Kresge Artist Fellowship in Visual Arts.

Richard Lewis is a Detroit born artist who started drawing at age four, graduated from Cass Technical High School, earned a BFA from College for Creative Studies and a Masters from Yale School of Art. He moved to NYC in 1995 to be an artist-in-residence at The Studio Museum in Harlem. He moved back home to Detroit in 2002.

Stephen Magsig received his BA from Ferris State University and studied at the Center for Creative Studies. His work captures scenes of daily life of distinctly American landscapes where industry and nature collide. Currently, he is working on a conceptual project of documenting the city of Detroit in small oil paintings, completing more than eighteen hundred since 2007.

Teresa Petersen lives and works in Detroit. She specializes in foundobject assemblage sculptures and collages made from vintage prints and magazines exploring the relationships between women’s stereotypes and ideals in culture, nature, and our throw-away society. She received an MFA from Wayne State University.

Lisa Poszywak works primarily in paint. Her work concentrates on social situations and human interaction showing the interactions themselves as well as what gets left behind. She graduated with honors from the College for Creative Studies and has shown her work locally and nationally.

Artists join together to tell us personal stories

Jenny Risher studied at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies, where she earned a BA in photography. In 2013 she published her first book, Heart Soul Detroit, which includes images of notable Detroiters. Risher’s clients include: Kenneth Cole, Victoria’s Secret, Hanes Corporation, Martha Stewart Living and more. She also is a mentor for Focus: HOPE Detroit Excel Photography Program.

Tylonn Sawyer is a figurative artist who received his BFA in drawing and painting from Eastern Michigan University and an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. He is the recipient of the Peter T. Rippon Travel Award for independent study at the Royal Academy of Art, London England, and is Youth Program Producer at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit.

Claudia Shepard has an MFA from Wayne State University. She has taught at Wayne State University, the College for Creative Studies and at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center. She has a studio in the Pioneer Building, Detroit, and her work has been in numerous shows across the United States. In 1994, Shepard published a children’s book called Lake of the Big Snake.

Stephen Schudlich is a fourth generation Detroiter, illustrator, designer, educator, and social zoologist, and Director of Exhibitions for the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, University of Michigan, Work • Detroit. As an illustrator/designer, he has provided work for clients such as The New York Times, Comedy Central, and Scholastic. He has also worked with WGBH (Boston), Heineken, and Nike.

Gilda Snowden received her BFA and MFA from Wayne State University. She has taught at Wayne State University, was gallery director at the Detroit Repertory Theater and is currently teaching at the College for Creative Studies. In 2009 Snowden was awarded the Kresge Art in Detroit Artist Fellowship. Her work is represented in numerous private and corporate collections.

Lois Teicher has been working as a sculptor for the past 28 years. She has shown work in over 50 exhibitions including a one-person exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City. Teicher has received 11 major grants including twice winning the Pollock-Krasner and the Arts & Patrons award from the Arts Foundation of Michigan.

Richard Vian graduated with a BFA from the Art School of the Society of Arts and Crafts and an MFA from Wayne State University. He has taught at several colleges in Detroit and is currently teaching at the College for Creative Studies. His work is represented in corporate collections across the U.S. and in numerous private collections.

Man

in the city

Man in the City Location: Rooftops throughout northern Michigan July 2014-December 2015 The Man in the City Sculpture Project is comprised of 40 sculptures currently displayed on the rooftops throughout the city of Detroit and Windsor. John Sauvé created the project in 2008 and has exhibited it on New York City’s Highline and most recently on New York City’s Governors Island. As part of Crooked Tree Arts Center’s Detroit @ CTAC exhibit, Man in the City is coming “Up North.” Approximately 20 sculptures will be installed throughout northern Michigan. The Man in the City Project creates a metaphor for life that transforms the skyline and encourages people to look around. In the discovery process one becomes aware of their own sense of place within the city.

S. Kay Young is a Detroit based artist with a photographic history that spans 25 years. She is a descendant of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation and embraces her Native heritage. She attended the College for Creative Studies in photography and is the current studio manager there. Young has also worked at the Detroit Institute of Arts and had a one-person show at the DIA in 1998.

At CTAC in August, Sauvé and local sculptor, Sarah Mann, will be teaching a workshop for kids in 3rd-6th grades called, Public Art/ Public Spaces featuring The Man in the City. The workshop will explore the world of expression in public art projects. Students will learn the power and community building efforts that inspire public art as they design and create their own Man in the City Public Art project.
