Local parks, nature preserves, and natural areas make prime birding locations easily accessible, and also highlight local conservation efforts. Not to be missed is spring migration in Mackinaw City, the site of Mackinac Straits Raptor Watch’s annual Hawk Count. In the Spring of 2018, 64,298 raptors migrated through the straits. This included 44,036 Broad-winged Hawks, 13,091 Red-tailed Hawks, 7676 Sharp-shinned Hawks, 512 Bald Eagles and 27 Golden Eagles. This site is not to be missed. The Sunset Birding Trail features 30+ primary sites noted as hosting a variety or certain species of birds. Printed maps are available at local chambers of commerce, visitor centers and conservancies. Maps and a list of species are also available on the website. Birding is a great way to take in the beauty of the Petoskey Area and the surrounding communities. Come follow this exciting new trail!
