or 270 years Sotheby’s has operated a highly successful method of selling art—the public auction. In the last few years, however, this traditional means has been updated with a new space offering cutting edge contemporary art direct to collectors.

Named S|2 and with dedicated galleries in New York and, most recently, Lon-

don, this move by Sotheby’s seems to challenge the traditional roles of auction house and art dealer. It is, in fact, a response to the changing nature of the art market. As Miety Heiden, director of S|2 in New York, explains: “The art market

is growing rapidly and becoming increasingly global. There is certainly scope for many players and we are responding to our clients’ demands to transact outside the traditional sales seasons.” The fact that a permanent private sales gallery has been opened reflects an increased involvement in this area that Sotheby’s has enjoyed for a number of years. The first foray was in 2004 when an array of monumental sculpture was shown at Isleworth, a private golf and country club in Florida. This exhibition became an annual event for a number of years and was replicated in Britain – in the grounds of Chatsworth House, the sumptuous country residence of the Dukes of Devonshire—and in Singapore. What these exhibitions all revealed was the appetite of clients for buying works according to their own timetable rather than the auction calendar, and Sotheby’s could draw on literally centuries of experience and contacts in the art world to facilitate this. This indicates a key difference from a more traditional gallery—S|2 does not focus on the primary representation of artists, but instead can make choices based on which works or artists might have the greatest appeal. In 2011 a dedicated space, designed by architect Richard Gluckman, was opened inside Sotheby’s York Avenue premises in New York. The inaugural exhibitions covered a range of subjects from the work of Sam Francis, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Alexander Calder to shows curated by important art world figures such as Nicolai Frahm, Vito Schnabel and Josh Baer. The positive response to these from both collectors and the media meant the idea to make the S|2 brand global was the obvious next step, initially

orth Central Michigan College is a community college based in Petoskey serving close to 3,000 students in Northern Michigan. It has had a great impact on our region and has awarded more than 9,300 degrees and certificates since it began in 1958. North Central offers 38 career certificate programs and 24 associate degree programs. Like all community colleges, North Central presents a viable, cost-effective alternative to universities, with tuition rates lower than the rates charged by most other small community colleges in Michigan.

In 2014, North Central Michigan College proudly announced the arrival of the Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab – the Fab Lab! This 44-foot mobile lab is the only one of its kind in Northern Michigan. The Fab Lab is currently on the road designed to meet the urgent need for high-tech manufacturing training for students as well as employees at manufacturing facilities in this region. The North Central Now! program is an opportunity for high school students to earn North Central credit through dual (classes taken at North Central campuses) and concurrent (college courses offered in the high school) enrollment. Both options offer students the opportunity to earn semester-based college credits that will appear on a North Central Michigan College transcript and may be transferred to any public university in our state. Christina Johnson When I hit senior year in high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. It was then that I started taking a few classes at North Central Michigan College. I fell in love with the small classrooms, the professors and North Central’s commitment to helping each and every student succeed. After two years at North Central, I graduated with an associate degree with Phi Theta Kappa honors. I went to Grand Valley State University where I majored in Communication Studies with an emphasis in Advertising. I graduated in December 2013. I made a connection through North Central for an internship at Mitchell Graphics in Petoskey. Mitchell hired me and quickly promoted me into full-time work. I am now a marketing assistant and doing what I love – writing, helping with sales and, most of all, helping grow customers’ businesses.

Tucked along the north shoreline of the Little Traverse Bay, the GR & I Railroad Depot was built in 1889 after the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad linked Harbor Springs to its main line. Designed by architect Sidney Osgood, the Depot – with its oversized roof brackets, freight room doors and checkerboard windows – was built to serve the lumber industry and local commerce. In 1915, the peak of its business, eight trains passed through the Depot each day, and more than 500,000 tickets were sold throughout the year. Ultimately, as trains gave way to automobiles, the Depot at Harbor Springs closed its door in the 1930’s. The tracks symbolic of the growth of a nation were officially removed when the last train left the Depot in 1962. And since then, the Depot has struggled to find its meaning in a changing world, serving a long line of businesses ranging from a dress boutique to an art gallery to an ice cream shop. In 2011, a group of gentlemen dedicated to preserving the heritage and culture of a bygone era purchased the Depot with the hope of transforming the Harbor Springs landmark for local residents and visitors to Harbor Springs. After a multimillion dollar renovation, the Depot Club & Restaurant is now open for a third season and welcomes visitors from near and far to enjoy a first-class dining experience in the historic train depot of Harbor Springs. The Club Manitou Northern Michigan’s Well-Kept Secret

orthern Michigan has long been known as an idyllic, beautiful, and nostalgic summertime playground. Sitting just on the outskirts of quaint Harbor Springs and shrouded with mystery, the infamous Club Manitou is a well-kept secret. It is thought the name Manitou derived from the popular Lake Michigan steamship “Manitou” which brought passengers from Chicago to Harbor Springs during that time. The club opened during the prohibition in 1929 by a gentleman named Al Gerhart. Mr. Gerhart’s background was a bit sketchy due to his invlolvement with the Purple Gang of Detroit. The notorious gang was run by the Bernstein Brothers and known for smuggling and bootlegging; and for controlling the illegal activities of Michigan (just as Al Capone ran Chicago’s gang during the same time period). Illegal liquor trade was huge then and grew into the second biggest business in Detroit with income estimated at $215 million a year in 1929, just behind the building of automobiles. The Detroit Gang received its nickname because it was said, “They’re rotten, they’re purple like the color of bad meat, they’re a Purple Gang.” Club Manitou was nationally renowned as the exclusive summer-only bar, nightclub, gaming casino and up-scale restaurant catering to the ultra-wealthy resorters of the area. Dining at the supper club required a coat and tie, the exemplary staff were imported from New York City’s Club Vatel and the chef and sous chef were both french. Steak and lobster were favorite cuisine choices. Every Thursday, for example, four to five barrels of live lobsters arrived by rail from the Consolidated Lobster Company in Gloucester, Massachusettes for Friday’s menu.

The establishment never advertised, it was only known by word of mouth. Guests arrived in chauffeured cars and while they were dining the cars were washed which the chauffeurs especially liked. Maître d’ Paul Pepper was the doorman and the one who decided if you could enter. One had to be introduced by a friend, as the club was very exclusive. The Club was protected by the police, and it has been rumored they received remuneration in exchange for the protection. In fact, the club also had a quiet deal with the ladies at the town switchboard, which back then operated the phones. If a call was received from the authorities for a raid a light was placed on a pole outside. A lookout watcher for the club would keep this monitored. If suspicious action derived from this affecting the club; the next day the switchboard ladies would receive beautiful fresh cut flowers and chocolates for their help. There were two entrances to Club Manitou, one to the main dining club floor, the second guarded entrance lead downstairs through not one, but two metal doors. In the event of a police raid the downstairs metal doors locked down like Fort Knox. This was where gambling for pleasure took place with guests playing roulette, baccarat, chukaluck and cards with imported croupiers in attendance. The lounge area and nightclub, nicknamed “Slim’s” served nothing but the best gin, rum, fine french wines and top-shelf scotch. Oh, and yes there was dancing and well known bands for entertainment. The most talked about legend of the Manitou was that it contained secret underground getaway tunnels. One under the parking lot and the other running under the road (now M-119) to the small airport. These did exist, but have since been filled in.

Detroit “Slim” or “Big Al” as he was referred to was born in 1906 to Max and Margeurite Schwendner of Reading, PA. His given name was Allah Schwendner, a German Jewish boy. His name was then changed to Al Gerhart but with the same Social Security number.

Gerhart also had another club in White Sulphur Springs, Virginia called the Colonial Club. Among his guests at either club were figure skater Sonja Henie, Monaco’s Prince Rainier, comedian Bob Hope, and television personality Ed Sullivan. Club Manitou closed its doors in 1954 due to the loss of its liquor license being revoked by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission and numerous raids for gambling by the Michigan State Police. After sitting vacant for several years in 1962 it reopened as the Club Ponytail and was a wildly popular nightspot for teenagers and college students featuring well-known bands. Al Gerhart also purchased the Club Ramona (in the Ramona Park area) and tore this building down, giving him a controlling monopoly on owning the only premier exclusive summertime club in the area. He then used part of the lumber and built “Al’s Pier Bar” in Harbor Springs on the waterfront. The Pier Restaurant is still a popular dining spot for locals and resorters today. Northern Michigan is an area steeped in fascinating history. The story of Club Manitou is just the tip of the iceberg. Mondavi says, “I wanted to have that tieback to the heritage of Napa Valley and its historic wine making materials.” The cellar also features a bit of whimsy, a pool table that can be converted into a dining table for 10. Mondavi guesses his collection is somewhere in the 350case range, but says the real answer is “more than I can drink in my lifetime. But I’m working on it.” The cellar houses selections of his own wines, of course, including special bottlings never made available for general distribution, well as imports from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Tuscany, Piedmont, Rioja, the Rhine and Mosel.
