“ Hathor visited me in my dream last night. She took my hand and we walked under the dark desert sky which was sprinkled with bright stars. Then she stopped by a large rock and showed me the place to dig for the blue stones.” – said the priest to the Pharaoh, – “and there, she pointed in the distance , you’ll honor me with a temple carved deep into the mountain. “ Although ancient Egyptians knew well the Sinai, travelling through and wandering around, the arid environment of the desert offered little for settlements, except for the miners. Since the earliest dynastic periods they sent expeditions with workers, priests and soldiers to mine the rich turquoise and copper deposits and they built an amazing temple complex dedicated to their beloved goddess Hathor, and the powerful god Sopdu. Hathor, the cow-

headed goddess of love and fertility, who’s sacred stone was the turquoise and the warrior god, Sopdu, the Lord of the East and the Sky. He, as the Patron of the Pharaohs, was in all times associated with the god Horus in the ancient Egyptian mythology. The complex was enlarged during the dynasties by attaching new areas and shrines. The Egyptians largely depended on inspiration to find gems and metals, as there was little technology. This came from dreams in “Sleep Chambers” at the temples on the Sinai. As the revenues from the Sinai mines were considerable, the cult of Hathor quickly spread to the banks of the Nile upon the triumphant return of the miners. Ancient Egyptians were not only fond of carving scarabs out of this opaque sky-blue gemstone, but they also used pulverized turquoise as pigment to color statues, jewelry and as cosmetics. Scholars and historians argue still today, that this temple and mountain is the site of the

biblical Mount Sinai, as described in the Book of Moses, where his people were celebrating and adoring the Golden Cow statue. Today Serabit el Khedem is the most significant and unique pharaonic archeological site in the Sinai, located in an unusual but stunning landscape, where we can visit the temples, the tombs of the miners and many stone steles full with hieroglyph inscriptions carved by the ancient Egyptians. Along the path to the temple there are carvings on the rock wall, some picturing the goddess, life in ancient Egypt,
others about proud deeds of the Pharaohs. There are also very intriguing written inscriptions that many scholars still debate about, the famous Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions that we are still unable to decipher. Some argue that this was the ancestor of the Phoenician and the south-Arabian alphabet dating from the Middle Bronze Age. Serabit el Khadem is not particularly easy to reach, you need a jeep and a guide, who knows the area well. There are agencies to book this trip in Sharm el Sheikh, and the local Bedouins are also welcoming with guides. Serabit el Khadem is situated

about 250 km from Sharm on the west coast of Sinai, there are no paved roads and at the end of the road there is a pathway about 2 hours which we can only reach by feet. Bring a good pair of shoes, head-cover and lots of water, while there is nothing but desert during this walk. Consider this jeep excursion as a trek-trip with the amazing prize of the ancient site, which offers an unusual and highly interesting sight into the Mists of Time.

That the shark is the only fish that can blink with both eyes. That the shark can detect one part of blood in 100 million parts of water. That a giraffe can go without water longer than a camel can. That the ancient Egyptians slept on pillows made of stone. That the dolphins sleep with one eye open. That the elephant is the only mammal that can’t jump. That the most common name in the world is Mohammed. That the starfish is one of the only animals who can turn it’s stomach inside-out. That Saudi Arabia has more stretches of desert than any other nation on earth, yet tons of sand from the rivers of Scotland are sent to the arabs every year. The reason? The fine sands from the desert are unsuitable for making concrete and for use in other forms of construction. That the pupil of an octopus’ eye is rectangular. That the desert plants may have to go without fresh water for years at a time and many desert plants can live to be hundreds of years old. That the desert animals have adapted ways to help them keep cool and use less water. Many are nocturnal only surfacing at night. That the cats’ memory span generally lasts for 16 hours as oppose to dogs’ which retains for only 5 minutes. That if you shout for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would produce enough energy to warm a cup of coffee. That the starfish doesn’t have brain. That the goldfish has a memory span of three seconds. That the sharks and rays are the only animals known to man that don’t get cancer. Scientists believe this has something to do with the fact that they don’t have bones, but cartilage. That many sharks lay eggs, but hammerheads give birth to live babies that look like very small duplicates of their parents. Young hammerheads are usually born headfirst, with the tip of their hammershaped head folded backward to make them more streamlined for birth. That the mosquitoes prefer children to adults, and blondes to brunettes. That a fly can react to something it sees and change direction in 30 milliseconds.

La Luna
The Ritz Carlton’s Classic Italian with a View By Mostafa Farid

MIX August - September 2012
L
a Luna restaurant overlooking the terrace at the Ritz Carlton hotel is a truly elegant place to dine. This is an Italian restaurant with a distinctively classic style, with red napkins, live piano music, huge armchairs and a vast selection of pastas and mains, all served in a spotless five-star surrounding. I recently went to have dinner there with a good lady friend of mine. Not that it was a romantic dinner, but the décor with the candle lights on every table certainly gave it that mood. We were warmly welcomed with a smile, and interestingly enough, seated next to a friendly looking family with 2 little kids. The waiter came around with a big basket of bread and Italian pastries for us to choose from. Not wanting to seem voracious, my partner and I each picked out a couple of pieces only from the selection. Served with it was a very tasty dip made of Green and black olives, parmesan Cheese, and olive oil with minced Anchovies. We carefully looked through our menus as we nibbled on our inviting Italian hors d’oeuvre. For my appetizer, I decided to go fresh and chose the “Toscana” salad, while my partner started off with a warm mushroom soup. The salad was truly fresh, with strips of fried mozzarella cheese to compliment the taste of the special Italian dressing. My partner on the other hand was astounded by how tasty the mushroom soup was. “This is the BEST mushroom soup I have ever tasted in my life!” she said. Of course after that, I had to get a taste myself. The word I would use for it would be rich. The texture and smell worked together to give it a fulfilling authentic taste of mushrooms.
The lamb was so soft, it would literally melt in my mouth
Feeling content with our starters, we were ready to order our main dish. Our waiter advised us to try their beef fillet and lamb chop sticks, and so we did. I chose the lamb, while my partner went for the fillet. And since both of us like our meat to stay a little bit ripe, we asked for it to be cooked medium / well. As we impatiently waited for our main courses, the waiter came by with a couple of long glasses of Lemon sorbet, which is served as a separator between your appetizer and main course. Its purpose is to neutralize the taste in your mouth so you can better enjoy the food. Shortly after, my lamb “Costolette” with roast potatoes and partner’s beef fillet with Sautéed vegetables and gravy sauce, arrived. We were happy with the elegant serving and fairly big portions, but it wasn’t long till you figured out why the waiter had suggested the lamb and fillet for us. The lamb was so soft, it would literally melt in my mouth. I looked over to my partner and could tell she was enjoying her meal. I hardly needed to ask how her fillet was before she said “It’s absolutely delicious” and handed me a piece on her fork to taste. It was undoubtedly juicy, mouthwatering, and very tasty. Not long after we finished our mains, we were handed the dessert menus. A bit reluctant to order a dessert, we looked through our menus for the suitable thing to order. I wanted to stick with something more Italian, so I ordered the Tiramisu, which is made from, biscuits, a creamy mascarpone mix, and a touch of espresso. My partner was more concerned to order something that wouldn’t fill her up even more, so she went for a classic “Cassatte” - Vanilla, strawberry and chocolate ice-cream. Although it was quite large, my tiramisu was so intriguing after the heavy meal I consumed, I persevered with it to finish it all. We both came out happy, satisfied with full stomachs. The classic décor, the piano music, and the delicious food, made it overall a remarkable experience and a dinner to remember. MIX August - September 2012

NIGHT LIFE

MIX August - September 2012
A Lawyer by training, Oscar is Little Buddha’s resident DJ - By Mustafa Farid
A
hmed Abd El Rahman, AKA DJ Oscar, is a young athletic looking man who at first wouldn’t strike me as a DJ. I don’t mean to be stereotypical, but when you think of a DJ, or someone that parties almost every night, is into trance, house and techno music, you somehow relate it to someone who is more of a rebel, not quite an athletic looking law graduate. Over the years, the DJ profile has changed. More and more people from various backgrounds who took music as their hobby have turned it into a professional occupation. And so, it was very interesting for me to interview DJ “Oscar”.
Mix: Can you remember a funny incident that happened at any event?
Mix: How did it all begin for you? How did you get into becoming a DJ, especially that you graduated from the faculty of law in Ein Shams University.
Oscar: I have a general idea of what I’m going to play usually, but of course a lot of it is done as you go. It all depends on the first track you play really. You have to be very careful when you choose your first track in your gigs. It decides how the party is going to go. If you lose the crowd in your first track, you lose their respect, and it becomes very hard to get them to listen to you again. The first track is also most important because it’s your introduction. You say your name, the name of the party and so on.
Oscar: I had a friend who worked in an event organizing company called “Amazon”. He was a DJ there and helped me get a summer job with them. So for 3 years I went there to work in the summer which got me inspired to become a DJ myself. I started off playing at proms and graduation parties, and then I moved to Sharm in 2000, and used to play in different hotels, like Concorde El Slam and others. In 2006 I started playing for Hard Rock. I stayed there till 2011 and from 2011 I play here at Little Buddha. Mix: Did the money come first for you? Oscar: Never. To me, it’s the music that matters and making the crowd happy. Mix: In your opinion, who is throwing the best parties in Sharm El Sheikh? Oscar: Well, it depends if you’re talking about outdoor or indoor parties. For outdoor parties, I think space makes the best parties simply because they have the right facilities for it, not necessarily the best music, but the best venue. For indoor parties, it’s Buddha, also because we have the best indoor atmosphere.
MIX August - September 2012
Oscar: Requests are always a headache at parties. A lot of times I get people that come and ask me to play something for a certain band or singer while one of their songs is actually already playing. Like this one time I had one of the audience ask me to play a song for Shakira as it was already playing. I played him another song but he wouldn’t stop coming up to me and asking for a song for Shakira! Mix: When you play, is it pre-planned set or do you improvise?
Mix: How would you rate the DJ’s in Sharm El Sheikh? Oscar: Most of the DJ’s in Sharm are not really DJ’s. A lot of them work as part of an animation team in hotels and they become DJ’s or do it as a side thing. Becoming a DJ is easy now with all the technology. All you need to do is choose an effect, and the mixer will tell you when the bbm’s (beats per minute) are matching for you to press the button. Mix: How would you rate yourself as a DJ? Oscar: That’s quite a hard question to answer. I’m not sure, but I can say that I am good with the effects. I know how to add the right effect where so as to get a good transition from one song to the other.

NIGHT LIFE
Extravaganza Eid is here and with the celebrations comes a plethora of parties hosted at some of Sharm’s premiere nightclub venues. Considering that the Sharm el Sheikh metropolis is a little more than 20 square kilometers, the town has packed in a lot of entertainment with a generous mix of genres to suit all the tastes of the party people, whether Eid celebrators or tourists in town. Let MIX give you the lowdown on what’s happening and who is doing the decks. By Tina Roume

These Belgian brothers have sky rocketed up the charts with their remixes of the above two tracks and have played at London’s prestigious Ministry of Sound and the legendary Ibiza institution;Pacha. KITCHEN MAGIC
by Hedvig Jeney
T
he cookbook says: “… take a bunch of parsley, 3 garlic cloves, a hint of black pepper and 2 basil leaves…” We always carefully follow the instructions, while the taste and fragrance of fresh herbs and spices in our food are essential and irresistible. Usually we don’t give a second thought about the other properties of them, although they have so much more to offer. In ancient times each spice and herb had a different meaning, too. Some by magic, some by superstition and most of all, curative, the old medicine men and women used them to heal our ancestors. When we eat, it is most interesting to know, what exactly we fuel our body with. Parsley - to attract love, for protection from evil eye and purification of loved ones. Uses: The fresh herb is a rich source of vitamin C. It is said to inhibit tumor-cell growth while stimulating the digestion and the uterus. The leaves have some itch relieving properties if applied externally. It helps to cleanse the blood and boosts circulation and eases muscle spasms.
Black Pepper - for protection against evil and strongest by exorcism. Uses: For insect bites, insomnia, joint pain, liver problems, lung disease, oral abscesses, but in high amount, it can have an irritating effect upon the intestines. Piperine increases absorption of selenium, Vitamin B, beta-carotene and other nutrients.
Basil - for love, to become wealthy and for protection of the house. Uses: Thanks to its antispasmodic properties, basil is used for treating flatulence and stomach upset. It also helps ease tension and induce sleep. Triggers the production of saliva, enabling the body to digest food more effectively, aids digestion by increasing appetite and the flow of bile. Helps to clear the nasal passages of mucus and diseasecausing bacteria.
Dill - for protection, to attract money, to raise lust and for good luck. Uses: A digestive, pungent, cooling and diuretic herb that controls infection, but can be used also for insomnia, hiccups, diarrhea, menstrual disorders, oral care and by the high amount of free radicals it contains, it can prevent cancer. They also used to ease colic in babies, as it has anti-gas properties, as well as being a mild sedative.
Rosemary - for love and lust, for stronger mental powers, used by exorcism, for purification, for better sleep and to keep youth. Uses: It can be used both internally and externally on the body. For headaches, as well as for nervouwws complaints. Rosemary is an effective treatment against scurf and dandruff. It can also be used in mouth rinses and gargles; and is applied topically to stimulate circulation. The Key of Life W
herever you walk around in Egypt, we see the memories of the ancient Egyptian culture also in written form, drawn into signs called the hieroglyphs. Some of them have meanings more than just a letter, they became symbols all on their own, mostly used by the ancients as amulets. The Ankh is one of the most familiar of Egyptian hieroglyphs. It resembles the Christian cross, with a loop above the transverse bar. It is most likely depicts some kind of elaborate bow. Detailed representations of the Ankh show that the lower section is actually comprised of two parts - the ends of the bow. Early examples of the Ankh actually show the ends separated. Although the origins of this sign is obscure, still today Egyptologists and historian are arguing about the appearance and meaning, they all agree, that it symbolizes : Life.
The ankh m a y represent the life-giving elements of air and water. It was often shown being offered to the pharaoh’s lips as a symbol of the “breath of life”, giving him immortality. Ancient Egyptians often personalized symbols, the Ankh as well, and whatever this “living” symbol was doing, it has always been in its most powerful form. The ankh was popular throughout Egyptian history and due to its cruciform shape remained so into the Coptic period. It entered Christian iconography as the crux ansata, the handled or “eyed” cross. When you think about giving an exotic present from Egypt to someone you love and care for, a powerful
amulet in the form of the Ankh is the perfect idea. Besides it’s beautiful shape, either as a jewel, a painting or an object, it is expressing your wish to give eternal life to the one receiving.
