We wish to provide the Community Trunk, the new body of Michael Jackson, with information about new and delightful support projects. WRGO Magazine Editorial THE IMPORTANCE OF SELMA On the morning of Thursday, March 05, 2015 I was listening to the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) as I do daily. Every Thursday Don Lemon gives his weekly commentary and this morning he talked about the 50th Anniversary of Selma and spoke a little about the movie. Don Lemon said he had attended the movie “Selma” and was quite surprised that many young African Americans had never heard of “Selma”. Therefore, they had no history of it. Honestly speaking I had not heard very much about Selma either. In 1965 I was twelve years old and none of the adults, I knew, spoke about Selma in the communities, in homes or school. I have to wonder if the adults forgot about it or chose not to discuss it. Perhaps they did not want to remember or did not want to discourage the children of my generation. I don’t have an answer but wish I knew.

Tom Joyner and people who think or speak like him may not be the best source of significant information concerning legacies and historical matters. This opinion is not to insult or offend Mr. Joyner and his co-hosts but the greater portion of their radio show is used to poke fun at the black community; and especially the church which offends me something awful. Perhaps the jokes need to remain on “Comedy Central” and not the morning radio stations. Of course it is his show and he is free to do what he wants with it, but it could be that Mr. Joyner and his co-hosts have forgotten that they have a large listening audience which also include very young people. What are the listeners gleaning from this show and the black DJ’s who say that “Black Radio” is to educate the black community? I have difficulty enjoying their show except for the music and would love to receive more encouraging views than what is conveyed. Yes, Tom Joyner, is a humanitarian and has done some wonderful things for the black community, but it is hard to see the forest for the trees when it comes to his morning show because of all the foolish conversation and to me an embarrassment.

Don Lemon, along with the regular DJ’s on the TJMS, gave several reasons which make sense to me why Selma may not have been a household conversation. Perhaps it was too painful and the older generation did not care to remember it; and I get that. What I don’t get is what Tom Joyner had to add to the conversation. I do get it but not coming from him and his morning crew. Don’t get me wrong I appreciate everything he has done and continue to do for people and especially his financial contributions to colleges. The man is a champion when it comes to his humanitarian efforts toward the black community. However, I scarcely have a chance to embrace his commendable efforts because of the adverse dialogue on his morning show. His comments about young people not knowing about Selma was accurate in my opinion. He said: Educating people and especially the African American race was the reason for “Black Radio”. REALLY!!! That may be true and actually I agree with him. Perhaps that was the chief purpose for establishing radio for the black community from the beginning. However, it seems to me that his radio show is more about condemning people in the black community instead of building them up.

They failed to discuss the importance of Selma on the segment of this particular morning show and instead wasted a lot of time on folly by making jokes about people of their own race. Why couldn’t they use the precious time to share the importance of “Selma” with the young black Americans? Stay with me for a few minutes and let’s take a look at the importance of Selma. In the name of African-American voting rights, 3,200 civil rights demonstrators, led by Martin Luther King 7

On August 7, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, one of the most important pieces of legislation in America since the era of Reconstruction. It signaled the victory of a battle that was fought five months earlier in Dallas County, Alabama. On March 25, twenty-five thousand participants — the largest civil rights gathering the South had yet seen — converged on the state capital of Montgomery, concluding a four-day march for voting rights that began in Selma, fifty-four miles away. On Sunday, March 5, the first activists, recorded by television cameras and still photographers, crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge out of Selma. Horrified viewers watched as unarmed marchers, including women and children, were assaulted by Alabama state troopers using tear gas, clubs, and whips. The group turned back battered but undefeated. “Bloody Sunday,” as it became known, only strengthened the movement and increased public support. Ordinary citizens, as well as priests, ministers, nuns, and rabbis who had been called to Selma by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., flocked to join its ranks. The second attempt — “Turnaround Tuesday” — which Karales had been sent down to cover, was halted at the bridge by Dr. King before anyone was injured. Finally, six days later, the last march began after President Johnson mobilized the National Guard and delivered his voting rights legislation to Congress. http://picturingamerica.neh.gov/downloads/pdfs/Resource_Guide_Chapters PictAmer_Resource_Book_Chapter_19B.pdf

Jr., begin a historic march from Selma, Alabama, to the state capitol at Montgomery. Federalized Alabama National Guardsmen and FBI agents were on hand to provide safe passage for the march, which twice had been turned back by Alabama state police at Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge.

authorities in Selma had consistently thwarted efforts by the Dallas County Voters League and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to register local blacks. In spite of repeated registration campaigns, only 2 percent of eligible blacks were on the voter rolls. Furthermore, the local sheriff was notoriously brutal, and so seemed sure to respond in so galling a way as to attract national attention.

In 1965, King and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) decided to make the small town of Selma the focus of their drive to win voting rights for African Americans in the South. Alabama’s governor, George Wallace, was a vocal opponent of the African-American civil rights movement, and local

King had won the 1964 Nobel Prize for Peace, and the world’s eyes turned to Selma after his arrival there in January 1965. He launched a series of peaceful protests, and by mid-February thousands of 8

protesters in the Selma area had spent time in jail, including King himself.

highway narrowed to two lanes, only 300 marchers were permitted, but thousands more rejoined the Alabama Freedom March as it came into Montgomery on March 25. On the steps of the Alabama State Capitol, King addressed live television cameras and a crowd of 25,000, just a few hundred feet from the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where he got his start as a minister in 1954. That August, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which guaranteed African Americans the right to vote.

On February 18, a group of white segregationists attacked some peaceful marchers in the nearby town of Marion. Jimmie Lee Jackson, a young African American, was shot by a state trooper in the melee. After he died, King and the SCLC planned a massive march from Selma to Montgomery. Although Governor Wallace promised to prevent it from going forward, on March 7 some 500 demonstrators, led by SCLC leader Hosea Williams and SNCC leader John Lewis, began the 54-mile march to the state capital. After crossing Pettus Bridge, they were met by Alabama state troopers and posse men who attacked them with nightsticks, tear gas, and whips after they refused to turn back. Several of the protesters were severely beaten, and others ran for their lives. The incident was captured on national television and outraged many Americans. Hundreds of ministers, priests, and rabbis headed to Selma to join the voting rights campaign. King, who was in Atlanta at the time, promised to return to Selma immediately and lead another attempt.

Between the passing of the act and the May 1966 primary, 122,000 blacks registered to vote in the state. This represented a quarter of Alabama’s voters. http:// www.history.com/this-day-in-history/selma-to-montgomery -march-begins

On March 9, King led more than 2,000 marchers, black and white, across the Edmund Pettus Bridge but found Highway 80 blocked again by state troopers. King paused the marchers and led them in prayer, whereupon the troopers stepped aside. King then turned the protesters around, believing that the troopers were trying to create an opportunity that would allow them to enforce a federal injunction prohibiting the march. This decision led to criticism from some marchers who called King cowardly. In Selma that night, James Reeb, a white minister from Boston, was fatally beaten by a group of segregationists.

Mr. Joyner please give the more serious black audience a healthier reason to appreciate your morning show. Many of the artists and record labels in all probability don’t care and are only interested in you playing their music. Of course they are making money, but what about the rest of us who really want serious news and commentaries instead of bad jokes and dialog about sex. Even those who frequent your show with commentaries or newsworthy subjects are interrupted with jokes and foolish conversation. I wonder if Mr. Joyner and his two cohost have ever considered that some of the listening audience may be interested in what the guest has to say without having to listen to the rude interruptions and bad jokes.

Six days later, on March 15, President Lyndon Johnson went on national television to pledge his support to the Selma protesters and call for the passage of a new voting rights bill that he was introducing in Congress. “There is no Negro problem. There is no Southern problem. There is no Northern problem. There is only an American problem,” he said, “…Their cause must be our cause too. Because it is not just Negros, but really it is all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice. And we shall overcome.”

I am really sorry to bowl down this lane but I’ve been listening, daily, to Majic 102.1 for 3 straight years now and I felt the need to strongly voice my concerns. I don’t expect for Tom Joyner to change his platform for me or anyone else but I sincerely hope he gives it some thought. I do express gratitude and offer my genuine admiration for his humanitarian efforts.

ARTIST’S SPOTLIGHT POLAR BEAR HIP HOP ARTIST, COMPOSER , PRODUCER MUSIC MOGUL

PASSIONATE AND POETIC! An urban realist street hustler with an entrepreneur zeal that is taking the hip hop music industry by eclectic storm. With several thousand followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and over a half a million hits on his You Tube Channel; Charles Lawrence Jr. aka Polar Bear is the industry solution to the grind that pierces the soul . Born in Atlanta, GA and raised in Chicago, Polar Bear learned firsthand what it took to become successful as a business owner and recording artist. The son of a nurse (mother) and record store owner (father) exposed him at an early age to honing both his artistic and business skills. His lyrical influences were poets Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Polar Bear was fascinated by words intertwined together in a rhyme. Poetry gave him the outlet to express himself lyrically. Music made its way to this future hip hop mogul via his great uncle a local Chicago DJ and his grandmother a connoisseur of blues music. As a very young adolescent Charles unfortunately lost his father to the prison system. Charles Lawrence Sr. was convicted of a crime and his claim was self defense. While other young males were experiencing growing up without a father due to incarceration, Charles saw this as an opportunity to learn more about his father through visits, letters and phone calls. For 20 years Charles Lawrence Jr. shared a very rare and special relationship with his father. He recalls his father teaching him to be his own man. Charles Lawrence Sr. was his own lawyer and argued his case on appeal. This influenced and educated Charles Jr. to tap into his inner power, and to take control of his own business affairs. 22

Charles began his career in the music industry when a mutual friend approached him to become an investor in a group of aspiring brothers. After financing the group’s promotional and musical needs, Charles made the decision to purchase his own recording studio, C & C (Chuck & Charlie) Recording Studio. The studio was in part named after his best friend ironically named “Charlie” who had been gunned down on the south east side of Chicago, IL. C&C Recording Studio was the first of its kind located near the prestigious South Shore Community in Chicago, IL. Female hip hop artist Shawna, (daughter of blues legend Buddy Guy and first female artist signed to Def Jam South through rapper Ludacris' Disturbing Tha Peace Records ), recorded some of her earlier tracks at C & C studio. The studio became a very popular spot and was visited by, Raekwon, a member of the hip hop group, “The Wu-Tang Clan”, and multiple Grammy Award winning recording artist, Common.

Erick Sermon (one half of rap duo EPMD), Pimp C ( of hip hop group UGK), Kool G Rap, LA The Darkman, (The Wu-Tang Clan affiliate), Carlos Broady aka Six July, (composer credits include, Lil Kim, Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G., Sean “Diddy” Combs and talk show host Wendy Williams), and Polar Bear himself. An article about Flight Risk Entertainment was featured in, The Source Magazine, and the record label was advertised in both, Double XXL, and, Vibe, magazines. Polar Bear had a mutual friend that was working with hip hop artist Eminem, “Up and Smoke Tour”. As a street savvy entrepreneur, Polar Bear and Flight Risk Entertainment followed the tour from city to city promoting his artists and record label. This was a smart business move which helped sell over 20,000 units along with street promotions and advertisements. By the mid 2000’s, Polar Bear made the decision to switch gears and focus on his own solo rap career. He spent many years in the recording studio writing and recording. He even traveled around the country spending time in recording studios in Los Angeles and New York. In 2009 he released his first mix tape, CUSTOMER SERVICE, which received strong positive underground street creditability. In 2011 a second mix tape was released, STR8 DROP, which featured hip hop group, The Wu-tang Clan, rapper Raekwon, on the track “ Man Down,” produced by Six July . Polar Bear purchased this track from Six July so that meant he own the rights. Industry veteran rapper 2 Chainz heard the track and wanted it for his new album project, Based on a T.R.U. Story, (album was nominated for “Best Rap Album” at 55th Annual Grammy Awards). Six July and Polar Bear signed a deal with 2 Chainz with a stipulation to receive royalties in perpetuity. The single is now known as “Ghetto Dreams” featuring multiple Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter John Legend and hip hop artist Scarface.

Polar Bear established his own record label Filthy Rich Records. He formed his own group, The Hench Men, and also signed female R&B artist/songwriter, Freckles. (Freckles went on to collaborate with R&B singer, R. Kelly, and Rapper Lil John, and other well known recording artists). Due to the fact boxer, Floyd Mayweather owned a record label using the same name different spelling “Philthy Rich Records”; prompted Polar Bear to change the name of his label since Mr. Mayweather is truly Filthy (Philthy) Rich. The new label was reborn as Flight Risk Entertainment.

Artist Management gave Polar Bear the opportunity to experience the personality conflicts, drama, and behavioral patterns of his own artists, while simultaneously honing his own hip hop artistic skills. Polar Bear also wrote songs for his own artists as a ghost writer. Flight Risk Entertainment also signed hip hop artist Bowtie. The record company was building a roster of contributing producers and featured artists which collaborated on Bowtie’s Album, “Son Of A Junkie”. Artists and producers included,

Polar Bear’s tracks have been featured in radio mix shows on Chicago top radio stations including WPWX 92.3, “DJ Pharris Thomas Mix 23

Show”, and, “Mustafa Rocks Mix Show”. Also tracks were featured on WGCI 107.5, “Timbuck 2 Mix Show”. In 2012 Polar Bear was in the development stages of his new album project and sampled a Nina Simone track, “Strange Fruit”, for his own original hip hop rendition of the track. Kanye West heard Polar Bear’s version and wanted it for his new album .Once again, another Polar Bear/Six July business venture. Polar Bear own the track and sold it to Kanye West. The track is now featured on Kanye’s West album, Yeezus, known as, “Blood On The Leaves”.

TOM MESEREAU DEFENDS BIG NAMES AND NO-NAMES

Thomas Mesereau, Jr. and Susan Yu

Thomas Mesereau, Jr. and Susan Yu MORE THAN LEGAL REPS FOR ICONS BUT RATHER ICONIC LEGAL REPS FOR PEOPLE tween July 2005 and February 2006 and did not get paid until after Michael’s death. Mr. Mesereau never discussed this openly and the public knew nothing of it until the creditors’ claims were filed and paid by the estate managers in late 2009 or early 2010. What can one say against a man and woman such as these? They couldn’t have been in it for the money or prestige. This legal team had money and was well established before ever meeting Michael Jackson. Thank God for the friendship Mr. Mesereau had developed with Randy Jackson, Michael’s baby brother. It was Randy who suggested Mr. Mesereau to Michael.

Iconic because they are well known and masters at their profession. Tom Mesereau and Susan Yu are not just legal representatives for the rich and famous but also for those who are not famous and poor. This team, as far as I am concerned, are legal representatives for righteousness but moreso for the

Mr. Mesereau is also celebrated, appreciated and loved, by many, in the Michael Jackson fan community. Not only did he have a great professional relationship with Michael but called him friend; and he has an enormous echo among Michael’s fans. As much as his schedule will allow Tom Mesereau interacts with the fan community by way of the King Jordan blogtalk radio shows and also has granted interviews to other MJ fan groups. He is an advocate and avid defender of Michael Jackson and recognizes any fan or group whose mission is to protect and preserve the legacy of Michael Jackson. ALL fans are treated with kindness, respect and Mr. Mesereau will speak with any of them when he is able to do so. The barristers who act as gatekeepers for Michael’s estate don’t give us that kind of time and respect except through some TEAM with no face or voice. Nevertheless it is the fans who keep the MJ estate prosperous.

people.

Many know Tom Mesereau and his partner Susan Yu as the legal team who defended the greatest entertainer in the world, Michael Jackson, accused of child molestation. In a world filled with hate and many waiting to see Michael Jackson placed in prison, because they envied him, we have the team of Mesereau and Yu who took on this task and proved Michael Jackson to be blameless on all fourteen counts. Thomas A. Mesereau, Jr. is also widely recognized for his approximately 30 years of pro bono, free legal work for the poor and underrepresented. Mr. Mesereau is a well-known presence in the AfricanAmerican community where he operates a free legal clinic and assists local organizations and churches in drug recovery and youth counseling. For the past fifteen years, he has defended on average at least one death penalty case each year for free in the Deep South. He has accepted no legal fees for these cases and has paid all of his costs personally. As a matter worthy to note, according to court news report records http://www.courtnewsreport.com/ archives/009543.html, Mr. Mesereau and Susan Yu were still owed a fee of $341,000 for work done be41

Figure that one if you can. JACKSON'S ESTATE PROSPERS AFTER DEATH

Michael Jackson's Attorney Speaks Out About Trial - Aired June 14, 2005

STILL A CROWD PLEASER: Jackson’s death returned him to the top of the charts and generated hundreds of millions of dollars through deals for new albums and a movie created from his final rehearsals for his planned This Is It comeback concerts. Jackson’s posthumous album Xscape debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart last month, and a touring Cirque du Soleil show based on his music has played nearly 500 shows. All that translates into major money for his estate, which generated more than $600 million in gross earnings through 2013. http://chronicle.augusta.com/life/people/2014-06-28/ five-years-after-his-death-king-pop-bigger-ever

Susan Yu, the other half of this incredible team, also has many noteworthy victories and is a champion for those who are disadvantaged. She specializes in complex criminal and civil trials in Federal and State courts, as well as Medical Board trials. She is the co-founder of the law firm of Mesereau & Yu, LLP in Los Angeles, California. Funded and opened a Free Legal Clinic at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Los Angeles for low-income persons from all walks of life. Committed to helping the underprivileged, Ms. Yu donates her time to the poor in criminal and civil cases Pro Bono.

On the other hand this article is not about the estate managers but to give proper attribution to Mr. Mesereau and Ms. Yu. Read more about Tom Mesereau here: http://www.mesereauyu.com/thomas-a-mesereau-jr Tom Mesereau also has an impeccable public service and accomplishment report. A record of these awards and accomplishments can be found on his website, for they are too numerous to list here. Though we are grateful for what he did for Michael and how he continue to be a champion for him, his work did not start with Michael and certainly does not stop there. I, for one, would like for Tom Mesereau and Ms. Yu to be recognized for the persons they are and the work they do; and not JUST the “legal team that represented Michael Jackson”. There is more to these wonderful people than that. I believe Michael would agree with me.

Ms. Yu is frequently asked to speak to various groups and organizations on trial strategies, the legal profession, and civil rights issues, including the need for a community dialogue on race, integration, equality and justice.

On June 14, 2005 on the “CNN Larry King Live” show Tom Mesereau, Michael Jackson’s attorney, spoke out about the trial. Larry King asked Mr. Mesereau what kind of client Michael was and this was Tom Mesereau’s response:

A relentless advocate, Ms. Yu has successfully defended and prosecuted a wide-variety of criminal and civil cases in both Federal and State courts on behalf of individuals, mid-size institutions, and major corporations, including Fortune 500 companies. She has extensive experience in highly complex, document and fact intensive Federal and State criminal and civil cases.

KING: What kind of client was he?

http://www.mesereauyu.com/susan-c-yu Not much is often spoken concerning Susan Yu but there is much to be celebrated of this lady. Tom Mesearu has plenty to say about her. Mr. Mesereau calls her “The Unsung Hero of the 2005 Michael Jackson Trial” in an article by Deborah Kunesh posted on their website.

MESEREAU: He's a wonderful client. He's one of the easiest clients to deal with that I've ever experienced. He's very kind. He's very gentle. He's very cooperative. He's a very, very honorable, decent person. And I thoroughly enjoyed representing him, and I consider him a friend.

Quotes from Deborah Kunesh’s article:

“If Mr. Mesereau was the bold and shining name on the marquee, Susan Yu was the bright shining light gleaming behind the marquee letters. One, without the other, would be missing something absolutely crucial. The dynamic duo was dynamic, according to Mesereau, because of his partner. “Susan Yu was the only lawyer I worked closely with during the Michael Jackson trial. She was the only lawyer I trusted. She was, without a doubt, the most important lawyer on the defense team,” stated Mesereau. One thing is certain. Mesereau most definitely has very deep respect and admiration for his partner in law and justice, and rightfully so.” Interview with Susan Yu (kscila188)

Tom Mesereau defends big names and no-names

Tom Mesereau handled the Michael Jackson and Robert Blake cases but prefers the cases of poor, no-name clients.

Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- When a case spirals out of control, Tom Mesereau gets the call. He won an acquittal for Michael Jackson in a child molestation case that was followed by millions.

Mesereau, who is 60, represents these poor clients for free, handling at least one trial a year. He also operates a free legal clinic in South Central Los Angeles. "He is very dedicated to social justice and volunteers an incredible amount of his time to clients who would not otherwise have a chance in our system," said Loyola Law School professor

For Robert Blake, accused of murdering wife Bonny Lee Bakley, Mesereau set the groundwork for acquittal with a preliminary hearing that was more like a mini-trial. He also got Blake out on bail, almost unheard of in a high-profile capital murder case. But what kindles the fire in Mesereau's belly are the capital cases of little-known defendants from the Deep South: the homeless black man who faced the death penalty for allegedly killing a white woman in Alabama; the woman accused of beating her toddler to death with a plastic bottle filled with M&Ms. He won acquittal for the first, and the other client was convicted of manslaughter but spared the death penalty.

Tom Mesereau walks into court with his most famous client, Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop.

Laurie Levenson. A chance meeting with Michael Jackson's 44

brother, Randy, later led to Mesereau's representation of the most famous pop star in the world.

true calling was defense work. In one of the first cases he was assigned to prosecute, Mesereau recalled, he wanted to hug the defendant, a 14year-old accused of shoplifting.

"He did a great job in the Jackson case and he didn't have the world's easiest client," Levenson said. "His cross-examination in the Jackson case was masterful."

Mesereau's first celebrity client, or at least the first one who received publicity, was heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson, who was investigated for sexual assault in San Bernardino County. Mesereau persuaded prosecutors not to file charges.

Levenson added that Mesereau is "impressive in and out of the courtroom." His presence in the courtroom is commanding. He is tall, with broad shoulders, chiseled features and an arresting mop of snow-white hair. Legal peers consider his laser-like crossexamination skills to be the best in the business.

I see lawyers acting like clowns just because there's a camera around. (quote) -Tom Mesereau, attorney The Blake case catapulted Mesereau to fame, although he didn't last until the trial. Blake was known as a difficult client, and Mesereau was the second high-profile lawyer to leave the case before trial.

But Mesereau seems unaffected by the limelight; if anything, he avoids it. "I'll never instigate getting the media involved in a case," he said. "There are some lawyers out there who will try to promote their clients' problems to try to draw attention to themselves. I am not one of them. I see lawyers acting like clowns just because there's a camera around."

Soon afterward, Jackson's family begged him to take the criminal child molestation case, replacing attorneys Mark Geragos and Ben Brafman. The Jackson family told him he came highly recommended by Johnnie L. Cochran Jr., who won acquittal for O.J. Simpson.

During the Jackson trial, Mesereau lived like a hermit in a rented condo, far from the Santa Barbara hotels where the media stayed. He was in bed by 8 p.m., and up by 3 a.m.

Mesereau still cringes when he talks about the circus atmosphere surrounding the Jackson case. "Mountains were made out of molehills," he said. "The case was characterized by crisis, shock and confusion."

He learned discipline early. He was born into a military family in West Point, New York. His father, a close aide to Gen. Douglas MacArthur, was on the battleship Missouri with him when Japan surrendered, ending World War II. After the Army, his father joined the family business -Mama Leone's Italian restaurant in New York City's theater district.

In "Defending Michael," an article Mesereau wrote for the Los Angeles Daily Journal, a legal newspaper, he recalled the morning Jackson hurt his back, went to the hospital and was late for court. When the judge threatened to revoke bail, Mesereau ordered his client to come to court, immediately.

But Mesereau didn't follow his father to West Point. He graduated cum laude from Harvard, where he was on the boxing and football teams and protested the Vietnam War. He received his law degree from Hastings School of Law in San Francisco.

"His pajama bottoms became a media feast," Mesereau recalled. "But they had no bearing on the trial or verdict. The jury foreman later informed me that no juror even noticed Michael's pants, or lack thereof."

After a brief stint in Washington as a speechwriter on Capitol Hill, he joined the Orange County district attorney's office. But he soon learned his

a drug debt. None of his clients has received the death penalty. STORY HIGHLIGHTS  Tom Mesereau won an acquittal for Michael Jackson in a child molestation case  He also got actor Robert Blake out on bail in his murder case  Mesereau defends at least one poor client in the South each year  He is highly critical of lawyers who seek the limelight

"He was a very kind-hearted, gentle, sensitive, intuitive artist who truly believed he could heal the world in some positive way," Mesereau told CNN. But, he added, "He attracted one profiteer after another. There was loneliness, isolation, distrust. The cruelest thing of all was taking children and turning children against him." Jackson was acquitted of all charges -- a verdict that surprised many. But Mesereau saw it coming. "I thought we were winning all along," he said, even though media reports indicated otherwise.

During the trial, Mesereau fended off encroachments from other lawyers who, he said, "were constantly trying to get to Michael." Reporters called up old girlfriends, digging for dirt. Journalists tried to cozy up to the lawyer, promising favors for inside tips.

He hasn't tried a celebrity case since, although in Los Angeles, his defense of real estate agent to the stars Joe Babajian received plenty of attention. Babajian, who was accused of mortgage fraud in federal court, was acquitted of 13 counts, and the jury hung on the remaining 8 charges. Mesereau knows the Jackson case is part of his legacy. "No matter what I do in the future, I'll be judged by that case for the rest of my career." Quote: "Big cases either tend to take you sky high or drop you into the pits of hell." Clients: Michael Jackson, Robert Blake, Mike Tyson Personal: He's traveling to Alabama this month to defend an African-American man facing the death penalty for allegedly executing a man over

MICHAEL JACKSON 2005 TRIAL Day By Day Account of Courtroom Events 48

49

March 1st Michael goes to court with Katherine & Jackie. He was extremely skinny and pasty looking but always walked in with a beaming smile. Today he paused briefly to blow a kiss to what seemed like the entire room. Mesereau completed his opening statement. The prosecution opened his case by showing the Martin Bashir documentary to the Jury before calling Bashir as the first witness. His testimony is followed by the one of PR Ann Gabriel. During opening statements, the prosecution laid out its case against Michael, presenting Neverland Ranch as an enticing playground with a seamy underside where MJ preyed on the teenage accuser at the center of the case. Defense attorney Thomas Mesereau painted an entirely different picture of the situation, portraying the boy's mother as a scheming grifter who sought money from many celebrities, including Michael, using her children as accomplices. Sneddon described a documentary, "Living With Michael Jackson," which aired in February 2003, as an attempt by Jackson to use the boy as part of a comeback by showing how the entertainer had helped him through his bout with cancer. But the effort backfired after Jackson was shown holding hands with his accuser and defending his practice of allowing children to sleep in his bed, Sneddon said. The man who produced the documentary -- British journalist Martin Bashir -- was the first witness and he could have been prosecuted after repeatedly refusing to answer questions put to him during the trial. Citing the First Amendment and a California law that protects journalists who refuse to testify about their work, Bashir refused to answer at least two dozen questions from Jackson's lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, during cross-examination.

March 2nd There was a 28-minute delay before the trial got under way. Judge Rodney Melville finally took to the bench at 08. 58 AM only to discover that his microphone was broken. Earlier, while waiting, Michael Jackson stood alongside the court bailiff's desk where there are a couple of jars of sweets - some mints and what appeared to be assorted candies. He helped himself to one. Then another which he held up to the light before returning to the jar. Maybe he was looking for his favourite colour. He then chose another and stuffed it into the top jacket pocket of one of his lawyers - who looked somewhat bemused. Ann Gabriel is cross examined continue. Gabriel’s testimony was an effort by prosecutors to support their contention that after Bashir documentary backfired on Jackson, the MJ and his associates tried to isolate the teenager and his family and intimidate them into participating in a rebuttal video designed to control the damage to his image -- a campaign that allegedly included holding them captive at Neverland. But Ann Gabriel’s testimony also seemed to support the defense contention that Jackson's associates, rather than the entertainer himself, exercised considerable control of the events that unfolded after the documentary. She told jurors that she believed people around the pop superstar were putting their own interests ahead of his as they dealt with the fallout.

50

March 3 The prosecution shows a video of the Neverland search to the Jury. Albert Lafferty testified followed by Davellin Arvizo. The police officer was supposed to corroborate as to what the boys would say - but also had to admit that the evidence did not support their story. Arvizo sister's told jurors about a series of unusual events that unfolded around the time of the alleged abuse, including a sudden trip in which the family was whisked away to Miami on a private jet. She also described a drinking party with Jackson, changes in her brother's behavior and claims of death threats against her family. The testimony was elicited to support allegations the singer conspired to hold the accuser's family captive and get them to rebut a February 2003 documentary in which Jackson said he allowed boys to sleep in his bed. The Miami trip occurred as the program was about to air. She was to continue testifying the next day.

March 4 The prosecution showed the rebuttal interview of the Arvizo family made by Michael's team. Davellin Arvizo continued the cross examination with Tom Mesereau. The police tape showing the inside of the Neverland ranch had everyone in the courtroom glued to the big screen. The other video to elicit a jaw-dropping reaction from onlookers was of the accuser's family singing the praises of Michael Jackson. Prosecutors say glowing appraisals of the singer as a "loving, kind, humble man" with a "special heart" were scripted for the family. But most observers agree that the video was a major boost for Michael Jackson.

March 7 THOMAS MESEREAU presented an audio tape as evidence in court. On the tape, recorded by a private investigator hired by Jackson's former lawyer Mark Geragos in February, 2003, the young accuser GAVIN and his family were heard complimenting the King of Pop and recounting the abuse they suffered at the hands of their biological father. When questioned about the tape by Mesereau, Gavin's older sister Davellin, insisted the jury should not read too much into the family's comments made two years ago. She told the lawyer, "I don't know what a father is. I had 16 years of abuse I was just latching on to something."

March 8 Mesereau cross examined Star Arvizo. He and his brother were "grossed out" when Jackson appeared naked while they were watching a movie, but the singer told the boys it was natural. Mesereau pointed out that the pornographic magazines shown in court couldn't have been the ones his client showed the boy, because the witness testified that he had not been to Jackson's Neverland Ranch home since the spring of 2003, and the date on the publications was August, 2003.Asked about the different dates, Star replied, "I never said it was exactly that one. That's not exactly the one he showed us."Star admitted he had lied under oath in a previous, unrelated court case, when speaking about his parents, who are now divorced. Mesereau asked him, "When you were asked if your dad ever hit you, you said 'never'. Were you telling the truth?" Star said, "No." 51

March 9 It was a nervous-looking but composed Gavin Arvizo that took to the witness stand shortly before 13.30 PM. It was the moment everyone in the courtroom had been waiting for and a moment of high drama. The atmosphere was tense. Michael Jackson stared straight ahead. Gavin looked smart. At times, he appeared to address the jurors directly, often taking time to think about his answers.

March 10 Michael arrives 1 hour late and dressed with pajamas because a terrible back-ache took him to the emergency room of the hospital. The singer's lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, was pacing up and down the courtroom with a mobile phone glued to his ear. He looked worried. The judge's stunning announcement that he had ordered an arrest warrant for Mr Jackson, the mad dash outside by reporters to break the news to the world, and the frenzied coverage that consumed the rest of the day.

March 11 Michael does not attend today's hearing which is dedicated to motions.

March 14

The boy who accuses Michael of molesting him

acknowledged in court today that he told an administrator at his school the pop star "didn't do anything" to him. The teenager was asked about conversations he had with Jeffrey Alpert, the dean at Los Angeles' John Burroughs Middle School, where the boy had a history of acting up in class. Under questioning by MESEREAU , the boy said, "I told Dean Alpert he didn't do anything to me. I told him twice." It was not clear in court why the dean asked the boy about Jackson. But Mesereau confronted the teen with records showing that nine teachers had complained about his bad behaviour. Mesereau also cross-examined the accuser about similarities between a statement he testified Jackson made about masturbation and an earlier statement the boy attributed to his grandmother. The boy testified that Jackson told him that if men do not masturbate, they might rape women. Mesereau noted that the boy told sheriff's investigators in an interview that his grandmother had told him the same thing. The boy denied changing his story, explaining, "She was telling me it was okay to do it, and Michael was saying you have to do it."

52

March 15 Mesereau completes Gavin's cross examinations. Gavin testified that the reason he told his school's dean he wasn't molested by the star was because he wanted his schoolmates to stop teasing him. The explanation - that Jackson never touched him - came during the questioning by Tom Sneddon, following the witness' lengthy cross-examination by Jackson attorney T. Mesereau. In what is being perceived as a damaging testimony to the prosecution, the boy revealed on the stand that he had informed Alpert, a dean at Los Angeles' John Burroughs Middle School, that nothing inappropriate had happened to him during his visits to Jackson's Neverland Ranch in 2003. Then the boy explained his conversation with his dean, saying that after a TV documentary featuring him with Jackson aired, he was taunted by schoolmates who teased him about being "raped" by Michael. When Alpert then confronted the boy and asked if he had been molested by Jackson, the accuser said no. The boy explained in court, "All the kids were already making fun of me at the school, and I didn't want anyone to think it had really happened." Before leaving the stand, Gavin answered Sneddon's question about his opinion of Jackson now. He replied, "I don't really like him anymore. I don't really think he's deserving of the respect I was giving him as the coolest guy in the world." Mesereau told the Santa Maria, California court that Gavin, fabricated his civil lawsuit after consulting Larry Feldman, the attorney who won a previous child molestation lawsuit against Jackson in 1993, costing the star millions of dollars. But Arvizo insisted he did not know he only had until the age of 18 to file the civil lawsuit against the singer, which will automatically win him substantial damage payments if Jackson is convicted at his criminal trial. Mesereau asked Arvizo, "You know you have until the age of 18 to file a lawsuit against Michael Jackson?"Arvizo said, "No." Mesereau continued, "What? You never discussed that with your mother, or attorneys Larry Feldman or William Dickerman?"Are you also aware that if Michael Jackson is convicted, you automatically win that civil claim?"Arvizo replied, "No. We do not want his money." Gavin came across as cheeky kid who was not afraid to quip back at the lawyer. He was often sarcastic. The defense team in Michael Jackson's child molestation trial accused police investigators of being biased against Michael. Attorney Robert Sanger confronted Sergeant Steve Robel with statements taken from recorded interviews, contending the police officer was concerned with incriminating his client rather than discovering the truth. During preliminary police interviews Robel was quoted as telling the accuser and his family, "One thing I want to emphasize is you guys are doing the right thing here. I don't care how much money they have. He's the one who's done wrong. We're going to try to bring him to justice." Sanger confronted Robel: "That's not the statement of someone with an open mind who's trying to find the truth, is it?" But the policeman countered that he was trained to make such statements to alleged victims: "That statement is to reassure them because they were terrified when they came forward. It took us two weeks to get them to come in." Sanger continued with his aggressive line of questioning: "Isn't the technique you are taught to tell them (is) to be honest and not to tell them they're right, everyone else is wrong?" The defense lawyer went on to pinpoint inconsistencies in the accuser's testimony that he was masturbated by Jackson five times over a short period of time. Sanger said, "Your investigation disclosed on the (the family's) last days at Neverland there were not five occasions when the molestation could have occurred."Robel replied, "No, that's not correct," admitting there were "two or three days" when Jackson was not present.

53

evidence of past sexual crimes could be admitted unless the judge said so. In denying the request for a mistrial, Melville said prosecutors drew out the testimony to establish how much contact Jackson had with boys who visited Neverland, not to suggest any impropriety by the singer.

March 21 Michael is once again taken to the hospital because of back pain. He then goes to court with Katherine, Joe & Jackie where a doctor explains the health state of Michael to the judge who agrees to let him go home. Testimonies of detective Conn Abel, flight attendant Lauren Wallace & child molestation specialist Anthony Urquiza.Michael has arrived late at court for the second time in two weeks. He arrived at courthouse on crutches and supported by his bodyguard the ailing him shuffles into the room. - but he didn't make it into the dock for a further 45 minutes. When he did emerge, the trial resumed - Judge Rodney Melville JR made no explanation for Michael delay. Once Michael seated he grabbed a handful of tissues and holds them to his face but soon he signaled to his aides that he wanted to leave the courtroom. Supported by a doctor wearing scrubs, Michael made his way to the exit door. At one point the doctor is called into the judge's chambers along with the lawyers. The doctor returns and speaks to Jackson's parents who are seated in their usual positions near the front of the public gallery. His mum looked worried. Mr. Mesereau whispers something to Joe Jackson At 9.03AM the bailiff says Mr. Jackson is returning to the courtroom. At the end of the day, Michael left court saying that he was "on medication by way of the doctor".

March 16 The prosecution shows to the Jury the erotic material found during the Neverland search. Michael occasionally skipped straight back out of the courtroom to use the bathroom. He had a liking for the bailiff's jar of sweets and usually grabbed a handful to share with his lawyers.

Testimonies of Kiki Fournier & Fritz Coleman.Neverland former housekeeper Kiki Fournier said she saw children getting drunk with Michael star and supported Gavin claims that he and his brother drank wine with MJ on several occasions, which Michael called "Jesus Juice. Fournier, who worked at Jackson's Neverland ranch in California from 1991 to 2003, said that in September (03) she had seen Jackson eating dinner with five children and no adults, and that at least three of the youngsters were intoxicated. She explained, "They were acting different. I believe they were intoxicated."

Special motions hearing without Michael & the Jury. The judge has rejected a defense request for a mistrial, after a witness mentioned the name of Michael previous accuser. The defense argued the testimony violated Superior Court. Judge Melville ruled that no

March 22 Louise Palanker testified that after the airing of an ABC documentary in February 2003, which showed the Michael holding hands with his then-13-year-old accuser, she received an "extremely disturbing" phone call from the mother. The woman was agitated and fearful and warned Palanker that their conversation was being monitored, the comedian testified. "I thought they were being held against their will," said Palanker, who also said the mother told her that "these people are evil. Palanker said the mother did not say where she was calling from, and did not identify whom the mother was referring to as "evil."Palanker said she remains in contact with the mother and the boy and considers them friends. "He's been honest in the face of others wishing him not to be," she said, referring to Jackson's accuser. However, under cross-examination, Palanker admitted that when she was interviewed by police in January, she spoke of the family in less glowing terms. She conceded she told police that the mother was "totally bipolar" and "very excitable," and also said that "this family can be as wacky as they want to be." But Palanker said she was probably exaggerating and engaging in "hyperbole" that is her stock in trade as a comedian.

March 23 The prosecution calls Det. Craig Bonner. There's a big box of papers…and hello—we've got porn, people! It’s the oldfashioned kind of porn: girlie mags. They were seized from the Neverland Ranch during the November 2003 raid. And now the prosecution is showing all of them, projecting their covers onto the screen at the front of the room. Among the collection:

 Live Young Girls (cover line: "Dildo Delinquents in Sex Toy Orgy")

 Oui (admirably succinct cover line: "Young Snatch")

 Penthouse (special issue: "Penis Sizes of the Stars")

 Plumpers (the cover shot—strongly suggest that this magazine features plussized women) There were also a couple of titles that referred to specific age categories. For instance, there were issues of Barely Legal. And there was also a separate magazine called Just Legal. And a third magazine - called Finally Legal. This case rests on whether Michael is sexually attracted to preadolescent boys. Yet these magazines suggest that he's way into older ladies. The prosecution calls Dr. Antonio Cantu, a Secret Service scientist specializing in fingerprint detection. Dr. Cantu proceeds to bore all of the courtroom. Even Brian Oxman was getting bored by this and begins to slump in his chair and actually slumps a lot further. In fact he was admitted overnight for observation for right lung pneumonia. 55

March 24 Ended the boring testimonies of fingerprints Dr Antonio Cantu & we have another non sense testimonony form Lisa Hermann a lady working in the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department as Senior identification technician in the forensic unit.

March 25 "I

can't take anymore," joked Judge Melville. His outburst came at the end of a second day of sometimes mind-numbing testimony about forensic work. The Court heard about whorls and ridges and the intricacies of fingerprint technology. One expert explained that fingerprints develop during the second trimester but it was a point of detail that seemed to drift over the heads of most of the jurors. On 28th the judge heard arguments and ruled on whether prior ’93’ allegations of sex abuse against Michael could have been be introduced into this trial. Brian Oxman was back in court after he was stretchered away from proceedings and diagnosed with right lung pneumonia upon being admitted to a nearby hospital. Oxman stated, "I feel OK."

March 27, MJ gives a radio interview to Reverend Jesse Jackson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNOEk9OjNro http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaQq4Vf7dkQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLByjz-EhHU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAfuQbzkgEE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uwnKO33fDQ 56

March 28 Newspaper headlines did not make pleasant reading for Michael Jackson. The tone varied according to the publication, but the message was the same:” Jackson Past Goes On Trial”. After the judge’s ruling, comedian George Lopez took the stand and told about helping Jackson’s current accuser as the boy battled cancer. Lopez said he came to believe the boy’s father was more interested in money than helping his son. He testified the father accused the comedian of stealing $300 from the boy’s wallet. Lopez said he finally cut off the family because of the father’s frequent and aggressive requests for help. When the father asked what he was supposed to tell his son, Lopez testified that he responded: “Tell him his father’s an extortionist.” The defense contended Lopez, was among celebrities who were targeted by the accuser’s family in schemes to make money. But prosecutors contended that any such schemes were the work of the boy’s father, who is now divorced from the mother.

March 29 The child accusing Michael Jackson of molestation was a "rude, discourteous and really unpleasant" passenger on an airplane flight, a stewardess said at the singer's child molestation trial. Gavin appallingly misbehaved on a journey with Michael from Miami to Santa Barbara, California, in February 2003 and even threw potato at a sleeping doctor travelling with MJ, according to Cynthia Ann Bell. She told the Santa Maria, California, courtroom: "The initial flinging of mashed potatoes was not playful. Throwing mashed potatoes at a sleeping man?" After her testimony the Court heard evidence from the man who introduced the singer to his teenage accuser. Jamie Masada, who owns the LAUGH FACTORY comedy camp for under-privileged children, said Gavin - then 13 and suffering from cancer - asked to meet MJ. Masada said that out of all the celebrities he promised to introduce Arvizo to, Jackson who was the one the teenager most wanted to meet, and the singer promptly agreed to his request. Masada told the Santa Maria, California, court that he also offered the boy gifts to boost his morale and recovery. He said, "I would say, if you eat, I'll give you $50. I would give him every week, maybe some money."

57

March 30 Cynthia Ann Bell cross examination who alleged it was her idea to serve Michael Jackson's accuser wine in a Diet Coke can has been called into question - after it emerged the owner of the airline has business ties to the singer. She was the source of much hilarity. She had everyone guffawing when she offered to demonstrate to one of the prosecutors the meaning of the word "cuddle". She told the court she never saw Mr. Jackson cuddle his accuser, but did see him put his arm around the teenager. "How do you describe a cuddle?" asked Gordon Auchincloss. "I can show you," responded Ms Bell. "Permission to approach the witness, your honour," came the quick response from the lawyer. Ms Bell caused a few more belly laughs when she appeared to fall off her chair on the witness stand. Few onlookers grumble that the atmosphere had been getting too frivolous. Ms Bell was called to support the prosecution's charges MJ deliberately concealed the alcohol in the can, but instead, she helped Jackson's defense team by telling jurors she decided to serve the wine in the soft drink container. Insiders believe Bell may have defended Jackson because her boss didn't want to destroy their business relationship, reported US gossip website. Also DR STAN KATZ testimony and he think Gavin would not invent his child molestation claims because he'd hate to be labeled gay. Katz interviewed Gavin Arvizo and then informed social workers about the alleged abuse. Katz, who also spoke to Michael first accuser Jordy Chandler in the 1990s, said boys of that age try and hide abuse of this nature. He told the Santa Maria, California, court, "It would be unusual for a boy like this to make up allegations to suggest that he has had inappropriate sexual relations with a male. These children are so protective and guilt-ridden and ashamed by anything extra-normal." 58

Entrepreneur of the Week: 14-Year-Old CEO Chental-Song Bembry Teen author, illustrator, and entrepreneur gives tips to help other young writers enter the literary field and start their own businesses. The Honey Bunch Kids Young author promotes literacy through her innovative and entertaining book series By: Brian Dawson Artists aren’t typically what comes to mind when you think of entrepreneurs—yet, their pursuits are no less commercial in nature than the most cold-eyed business professional. Chental-Song Bembry, the 15-year-old writer and illustrator behind The Honey Bunch Kids, and her mother, Holly Glover, who helps her daughter run the literary business out of their home in Monmouth Junction, NJ, recognize that. Ultimately, the duo hope to “launch a dominant brand that would include the images of [Bembry’s] characters being sold on personal items, from bed sheets to book bags,” Glover says. First, though, there are reading and uplifting life lessons to promote. The Honey Bunch Kids tells the tale of a group of African-American middle-schoolchildren who become friends after they miss the bus on their first day and end up having to walk to school in the rain. Bembry is currently finishing the third book in the series, which is available at the Honey Bunch Kids Website. The young author, not surprisingly, is a passionate advocate for literacy; she’s frequently booked at libraries and schools to help promote reading to children, and was recently named Youth Ambassador for two literacy organizations, LiteracyNation and Mission EduCare. Her work is already beginning to garner acclaim. In 2011, Bembry was brought into the funding-and-mentoring program of 100 Urban Entrepreneurs, the nonprofit foundation that offers $10,000 in startup grants and eight weeks of mentoring to talented young businesspeople nationwide. (She is by far the youngest entrepreneur with whom the organization has ever partnered.) On February 6, in recognition of her community-literacy efforts, Bembry was named a “Hometown Hero” by the New Jersey Nets, part of the team’s celebration of Black History Month. She was brought onto the court during the team’s game against the Chicago Bulls, and Honey Bunch Kids images were displayed on the arena’s screens. “It was such an honor,” she says. “Being on the floor was an experience I’ll never forget.” While she and her mother work to build the brand as a licensing concern, meanwhile, Bembry has her sights set on turning The Honey Bunch Kids into a long-running series for boys and girls between ages 7 and 12. “Although my books are humorous, children will gain valuable life lessons from them,” she says. “The feedback I get from kids is what inspires me to keep writing.” Read more about Chental-Song Bembry and The Honey Bunch Kids at 100UrbanEntrepreneurs.org. 69

HUMAN INTEREST STORY Chantell Winnie - Model FASHION INDUSTRY HAS A NEW LEADING LADY The fashion industry has a new leading lady, who is

serving up stunning images and redefining the global definition of beauty. Chantelle, who was diagnosed at age 4 with vitiligo, the skin condition that was made infamous by Michael Jackson, spent her youth bullied and tormented for her differences. Through all of the vocal and often volatile doubters, she believed her 5’10 frame, modelesque features and internal beauty could see her through to her dreams of becoming an international super model and spokeswomen for others with low self-esteem. At age 16, a local Toronto journalist, Shannon Boodram, discovered Chantelle and shared her story in a YouTube video. The video received over 150k views, as well as features in The Daily Mail and Access Hollywood. Her maturity, beauty and message resonated with fans around the world. Before her 18th birthday, she found herself encouraging people all over the world through her growing social media platforms. With her emerging success online, the fashion industry began to turn their heads her way as well. Despite being rejected by every single modelling agency in Toronto, designers, photographers and runway directors began to see the beauty that the rest of the

world could see. Unrepresented, she was invited to walk in several Fashion Art Toronto shows in 2013. From there, she had several of the city’s top photographers clamor to capture her. Along her unprecedented ride to notoriety, that same year, America’s Next Top Model producers caught wind of Chantelle fever. After being discovered by Tyra Banks, Chantelle was requested to compete in the 21st cycle of America’s Next Top Model. Even though Chantelle was Canadian and visibly had vitiligo, Tyra was ready to make all exceptions necessary to make a lifelong dream come true for this young girl who refused to be held back by her own skin. Cosmopolitan, Access Hollywood, Buzzfeed, The Insider and MTV all agree that Chantelle is the next IT girl, and anyone in the know can safely rest their hopes and dreams in this new face of beauty as well. SPIRITUAL

WRGO Magazine Devotion for March 1, 2015 March Madness 82

For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them.

(1 Corinth. 16:18)

It has come to be known as “March madness,” the time of year when regular basketball seasons are over and the playoffs for the championships begin. I am always amused at myself taking such an interest; most sports don’t excite me, if they hit my radar at all. But as luck would have it, I was at the University of Virginia when one of its most famous players was there, and basketball was difficult to avoid; the school had rarely been known for excelling in sports, and was about to be put on the map in that regard. A couple hundred miles away, at the University of North Carolina, another young star basketball player was making a name for himself. UNC had been known as an excellent basketball team, and I watched the rival games with great interest. Michael Jordan played for UNC before he became the very best at basketball. Over the years, I have watched many games with my husband, who comes from the Midwest where basketball can be said to be king. Living there, it’s fairly mandatory to have a favorite team. I have come to appreciate the skill and determination of the players, but also some of the beautiful choreography that happens when players hit the court. Michael was known to respect art in all its many, varied forms. One example of his respect for the art that exists in sports occurs in the short film for “Jam.” Here we see him with Michael Jordan, and each demonstrates his talent and then tries on the work of the other. That latter part doesn’t go very well, but one point being made, is that we can recognize, acknowledge, and honor the contributions of others without excelling at them ourselves. Moreover, we can work together with them to enhance and expand our communities. I will always remember Michael Jordan as a “rival,” but I can acknowledge, admire, and respect his talent and excellence.

Watching this lifts my spirit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbHI1yI1Ndk

WITHOUT YOU Scattered memories like a jigsaw puzzle tossed across the floor this pain still surfaces to the core like yesterdays that still linger forever more distant of the tomorrows are sure to come its the strength to keep holding on without you Rushed of the waters depth to the deep its the restless nights of sleep in my world of the broken hearted that weep your heart I promised to keep dreams of what used to be when there was a you and me songs that still play in my mind hidden in the music box of our time when you used to be mine without you The world slowly turns on its axle like of a slow motion just existing not living cant you feel my heartbeat beating outside my chest you took it with you when you left what will I do with me without you......

Man Beneath The Crown 5years old, drinking Pepsi, & eating popcorn Aunt Barbara & me were watching concerts She had stacks of VHS tapes of Michael Jackson It's nostalgic to reminisce & feel the magic I was 13 in 93 when the 1st accusations hit the news I felt something for him that was brand new He became human to me & a thought stopped me in my tracks We have Michael Jackson but who does he have? From that moment he was always human to me There's so much more beneath the crown of the King The pain & sadness never completely left his eyes A broken human heart hidden behind a beautiful smile He was a giver & he gave all that he had

I'm not just talking money & time, please understand He gave up his freedom and his privacy To spread worldwide love, music, and charity But when the show was over and he was alone again With his own thoughts, fears, and weaknesses I'm sure he must've been weary, suiting up like a clown To entertain the world when he felt like breaking down

He love us, we loved him, and love made him shine But beneath the crown I saw the man hurting inside He was simply a man with a beautiful soul but somehow Cause he was the King of Pop no one saw the man beneath the crown

SUNFLOWER TO THE SUN They tell me there are millions out there Every one just as addicted to you as I But I assure you your number one fan is here For i follow your every move in the sky If the highest form of flattery is imitation Then there are none who can compare For one does not need to have imagination To see the similarities in appearance we share When your brilliant rays shine upon me You give me the confidence to bloom And each time you disappear from thee You fill me with the darkest gloom Thus this I ask of you my brightest star Forsake that daily period of night And let us close this distance which seems so far For being together just seems so right.

“SHOUT IT OUT”: CORRINE MONTORFANI

Sun City: Michael Jackson’s South African Connection? 90

Michael Jackson may have been laid to rest in a Mausoleum, but after nearly six years we can definitely state that it did not grant him an eternal sleep. The millions his legacy has fetched since he passed away and in the years to come will ensure that.

MJJ Enterprise's Heal The World Foundation, a charitable organisation, which was originally owned by Michael Jackson, filed a trademark application in India. But the trademark for the initiative lapsed in India in the 90s as it did in South Africa in 2007.

MJ mean a lot by way of intellectual property rights, copyrights, use of trademarks and such alike. We saw very well how his record label worked and was able to make money even on his unfinished tunes. "The control of Michael Jackson's IP, believed to have been bequeathed to the Michael Jackson Family Trust, requires strategic management in the present to ensure its viability and fruitfulness for the future. Auctions ranging from vintage posters to a shirt, His estate fetched more than $600 million after death. Music label company Sony Corp and publishers re-packaged MJ music books and made any kind of memorabilia's to cash in on the emotional purchasing of his fans.. Michael is undoubtedly hot property with an everlasting value. MJ's music albums and other merchandise bearing his name or image have seen a spurt of an incredible amount of money only with his best selling albums after his death.

"Michael Jackson's trademark lapsed in South Africa in 2007 that was applied for in the name of Triumph International Inc, a US patent assignee, which also owns registrations in the UK," says South Africa-based lawyer IP attorney that handles Michael Jackson's IP. "It has not been renewed after that," he confirmed. Being the Estate under probation now we know almost everything about the finances of the Michael Jackson Corporation. But there are some subjects that are taken out..like some proprieties many people said and think belonged to him. One of these is definitely the gorgeous Resort called Sun City, in South Africa. Michael announced his HIStory world tour at the Lost Palace at Sun City in 1996 and it’s exactly the Hotel some people say he owned. 91

Around the web I found this little article from Reuters (no link because article too old)

Michael Jackson Seeks South Africa Hotel Stake NEW YORK – Pop superstar Michael Jackson and his business partner are in talks to buy a $60 million stake in hotel and casino group SunInternational South Africa Ltd., according to sources

familiar with the situation. Jackson and Detroit businessman Don Barden are seeking to buy a 28 percent investment being sold by major shareholder North West Development Corp. Ltd., said the sources, who declined to be identified. The pair has been searching since last year to invest in the booming hotel and casino business. They have scouted properties in the U.S. Virgin Islands and held preliminary talks with Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. last October to buy the Desert Inn resort in Las Vegas. They have considered other properties in Las Vegas, and also unsuccessfully tried to build a casino in Detroit. One source said Barden was expected to fly to South Africa next week in hopes of completing the deal. Shares of Sun International, known as Sisa, rose sharply in South Africa on speculation about a potential deal with Jackson. Sisa declined comment. Jackson, Barden and North West could not be reached for comment. Source: Reuters Still now some fan sites are repeating the information that perhaps Michael was/is a shareholder of one of the most prestigious hotels in South Africa.

In a world travel guide Frommer’s South Africa, 5th Edition has a note: “Sun City & The Palace of the Lost City Developed by Sol Kerzner, The Palace was built 12 years after Sun City opened, and the sheer magnitude of its opulence is proof of the amount of money taken from those frequenting Sun City’s slot machines and tables. Separated from the rest of the resort by “The Bridge of Time” — a large stone structure that shudders and rumbles at preappointed times from a mythical earthquake, and is lined with a “guard of honor” of carved elephants — the Palace is entered through the massive Mighty Kong Gates. Looking down on the rivers and jungle vegetation, it’s hard to imagine that 15 years ago this was nothing but a dusty, rocky plain. From the bridge, you can clearly see the “Valley of Waves,” where landlocked Gautengers learn to “surf” on simulated waves, tan on man-made beaches, and hurtle down steep waterslides, reaching speeds of up to 35kmph (22 mph; note that the Valley is closed in winter). In the distance, overlooking a Lake filled with live flamingos, is the majestic Palace, with what seems like an entire jungle of carved animals in attendance. Surrounding the Palace is what must be the most artfully landscaped garden in Africa, featuring five trails through 22 different sections of forest. The theme (that of a “lost city” that has been rediscovered and restored) is sometimes carried to ridiculous extremes, but the craftsmanship is world-class; the fantasy landscape is quite overwhelming. With Michael Jackson a majority shareholder, things can only get weirder.” But the mention of Michael has disappeared in the sixth guide, which has been published in December 2009.

“As one of the king’s subjects you will stay in a room that matches your status;

338 rooms offer luxury ranging from just plain standard (and plain they are

by comparison) to the king’s suite which was good enough for Michael Jackson.”

93

The reality is that CEO of this company used to be Sol Kerzner, a South African tycoon who supposedly got Michael into this kind of business. Kerzner, in turn, is partner of Philip Anschutz who is CEO of AEG, owner of the Staples Center and the O2 in London among others.

Michael was also a friend of Gerry Inzerillo, former Chief Executive of Sun City. We have plenty of pictures of Inzerillo’s marriage with Prudence Solomon, a South African TV star. Michael was best man at their wedding.

Sol Kerzner is now CEO of Kerzner International Holdings Ltd (formerly Sun International) and involved in huge hotel and casino deals. If I remember correctly it was never reported that Michael ended up buying stakes of the Palace. To check properly this issue we should look into the historical stock report for that company and see if some connections can be found and then in the old Annual Reports of Sun International. Michael as a shareholder ‘s nowhere.

However only the Top 10 shareholders are listed in every Sun Annual Report. But they also show that there is a total of 24 huge shareholders among whose MJ could have been. So far, we have not any proof of Michael being a shareholder or even owner of this resort in South Africa. It’s also true that we might see nothing because he bought parts of the Sun through a dedicated company and that’s the reason papers do not show his name. He was quite a smart businessman. The media would have eaten him alive if they had known he had anything at all to do with that luxurious resort. We really cannot codify if this beautiful Resort was/is an MJ asset but we still have rumours coming from South African people telling to have heard MJ owned it and he was there pretty often.

NEW PROJECT LAUNCH! “ Michael Jackson’s Legacy” are delighted to announce that our new venture will take Michael into the heart of the Savannah as we seek to help alleviate the plight of elephants. Michael’s heart for elephants was laid bare when he wrote ‘So The Elephants March’ for his book ‘Dancing the Dream’ and years later, he questioned whether humanity had their trust in his hit ‘Earth Song’. Sadly, the poaching of elephants has increased and the African elephant is at risk of extinction. Today, many of these dear creatures do not get the chance to roam as freely as Michael’s beloved elephants did at Neverland. The good news is that the charity International Elephant Foundation (IEF) has been tirelessly helping elephants and communities to live side by side in harmony for many years. In the picture below, you can see one of their teams treating an injured elephant in Uganda. Now, we are excited to be afforded a chance to work with them in securing just a few of the necessities needed to continue the phenomenal work they do on a daily basis. As always, we know that many hearts right here will join us in ensuring success as together, we take another small step towards Michael’s dream of healing the world. The projects for funding are laid out below. Stage 1: $1500 (£1000) for 6 camera traps (remotely activated camera that obtains critical data). Stage 2: $1200 (£800) for new tires for the mobile vet vehicle used in Uganda to treat injured wildlife, primarily removing snares from elephant, giraffe and lion, and treating their injuries. Stage 3: $1500 (£1000) to fund a village scout on patrol in Zambia. Every donation WILL make a difference. Please tell your friends and let's make another miracle happen for Michael - and for the elephants. Paypal: hello@michaeljacksonslegacy.org

MJ Legacy

To celebrate the spring equinox, on March 21, the stand of the “Michael's Dangerous Girls Association” took part on the "Open-air Spring Market" in Rome (Italy) bringing a bit of Michael over there too. Impersonator Emiliano Fiacchi, always friendly and helpful, did not miss the event and delighted children and public with his performances. He perfomed “Dangerous, Thriller, Beat it, Billie Jean”. Michael's Dangerous Girls were there to promote Michael's figure while selling handmade objects which incomes will be given to the various charities entities supported by Michael’s group. Daniela Frongia commented the result of the day: “ People listen to you but not that much .... I can say few people were really interested to listen to our MJ speech to promote his immense charity works. For too many people he represent just a rich, strange ... now dead ... singer… ok but we are not giving up. ...We can just add :VERY GOOD! NEVER GIVE UP ON MICHAEL WORDS!!!!!!! 99

Mike Jack The Michael Jackson# 1 Tribute Artist of the Middle East

Mike was at the age of eight when he first heard of the King of Pop Michael Jackson. He began to watch Michael’s concerts and video clips. Since then, he got mesmerized by his singing, performance and dance. He started to study his art, not realizing that his movements are a form of dance.

At the beginning Mike did not receive sufficient encouragement, because of his young age and the rumors that revolve around the artist's legend.

He imitated the way Michael dressed, the way he danced and eventually hosted some private parties at his home country, despite of his young age.

Mike is highly influences by the belated legend, but he also aspires to put his own style in all types of singing, choreography and song writing. Mike composes his own music, writes

“I am not an emulator; I try to reflect the belief system of a legendary figure, Michael Jackson.

MIKE is a qualified and professional Dance instructor of BALLROOM & LATIN Dance Styles and choreographer. He formed a band in 1998, and appeared in the first concert in 1999 ,at his home country, where he began dancing and imitating Michael in more than 8 songs continuously, he was age of 14 only!. The band won acclaim. from the public, which lead to eight other concerts to be shown in many countries in the Middle East and eventually won the championship of a dance competition in the Middle east. After the huge successes of bringing the full Michael Jackson image for the Middle East's fans, The fans gave Mike the title of Michael Jackson of the Middle East. After the death of Michael, Mike became rich material for the media, where he was given the title officially on various television interviews. He made sure he attended all the concerts set up to honor The King of Pop in Dubai and danced in honor of his idol and for his fans that missed him. Also Mike met Michael Jackson’s brother Jermaine Jackson from the Jackson 5, and Mike performed a small tribute in front of Jermaine Jackson. Jermaine gave Mike the honor of being one of the best MJ's tribute artists in the world. Mike was chosen to do an exclusive TV interview with 'The Jacksons' when they came to the Middle East for their 'UNITY TOUR' as he is the No 1 Michael Jackson Tribute Artist in the Middle East.

“I emulate, and to study the dance steps of Michael, and listen to his songs with the full conviction of the topics he raised. I attend concerts and interviews in his honor”.

And if feelings are merely portrayed through facial expressions and not truly felt, they will look grotesque. We should remember that in art, spirituality is primary, and technique is secondary. Sports are different – in sports, technique is primary – but dancing is not a sport. Michael Jackson had what it takes in terms of artistic gift. Many of his moves looked so brilliant, smooth, and talented not because he was technically skilled (although he was certainly capable) but be-

parts… All this is sexual. It’s a reminder that all folk DANCE BLACK AMERICA SCREENER

dances once were attributes of pagan cults and celebrations. Moves that hinted at something sexual were intended to praise fertility, harvesting and healthy offspring. The meaning was not to arouse the viewer but to praise and celebrate life, or perform a religious ritual. The energy people emitted in ecstatic dancing was meant to bring welfare to their tribe and reflect their union with supreme forces and with nature. The sexuality of their moves was a tool and not the final goal. That’s why in all these cultures such moves

look sensual, natural and not at all obscene. Such movements are familiar to local people – they’ve seen them or danced them since childhood and attach no special importance to them. The dancers don’t cross a line. They simply do what’s natural to them. Speaking of the African folk dance, look at the way these little girls from Senegal dance in the streets of their village. It’s a common childhood pastime, just like American girls jump rope in the driveways in Indiana. There is no subtext to it. Nevertheless, the Senegal girls customarily make fast rhythmical thrusts with their hips, sometimes grabbing their skirts between their legs. This might be seen as improper in the traditional European cultures, but the African culture sees no obscene meaning in those movements, so naturally they are performed without a shade of vulgarity.

In short, a movement is made vulgar not by the body part that makes it, but by the way it is presented and perceived. Far back in my childhood days, I came to the conclusion that all modern popular music and dance culture originated from Africa. This is quite obvious. However, the movie Dance Black America which I saw later left a strong impression on me. I realized that half of our everyday life is related to Africa. This movie is a wonderful material. It traces the history of black dance from ancient folk roots to modern dance. We see tap dancing, various stage pieces from the beginning of the 20th Century, and the Lindy Hop. All of these dances are the heritage of Africa. And all of Western pop culture borrows its rhythms from Africa. The most amazing thing is that Africans have completely changed European notions about how to dance. Where are the European waltzes and ga-

vottes now? Shut in their small niche of high culture – of ballroom dancing and other all-but-forgotten historic dance for those who wish to study it. But the African principle of free movement of all body parts rules any disco or night club. Even the most talentless people who simply shuffle their feet to the music while waving their arms in the air still produce the echo of the African aesthetics of movement.

AdLLaw Editorial #2: Bill O’Reilly the time supported even concurred with Mr. O’Reilly’s claims. If these allegations are true then it shows a double standard which prevails in our News & Information arena. Ignore or close ranks around one of their own, even when they do wrong and throw everyone else under the bus. Our worldwide Media is inhabited by imperfect people, some who lie. They lie to the public for personal gain of all kinds. They present themselves to the public as the voice of reason, honesty and moral good. Like him or not, Bill O’Reilly is an influential person. He has been a major contributor to the Fox News Network for decades. He is known personally and professionally by all the movers and shakers in the world of Journalism and Television. This man is being roasted over an open fire for his claims of time in combat and for having witnessed events it is said he did not. Former associates and people who touted they were always antiO'Reilly are talking about this...NOW. Bill O'Reilly made these claims years even decades ago, but no one disputed the claims… THEN. They stayed silent and let him carry on. Other journalists are reporting they knew several of the stories were fabricated, but there are some problems with this. The former associates or others may have an ax to grind with O'Reilly. Many of these revelations are first reported by News Agencies which are known for "paying for a story", taking a benign story and giving it negative connotations or sometimes soliciting "paid to lie" exposés. Either the O'Reilly accusers are lying now or they lied then, by omission. In most cases the lies like Brian Williams of NBC were self-serving to enhance his “street cred”. However, it looks as if some of Bill O’Reilly’s tales may have done serious harm to one or more person’s ability to earn a living, move about comfortably in their normal environment and perhaps endangered their lives. He is not the first Journalist who may have caused this kind of situation with his story telling and he is not alone by any means. If you were to research deeply enough you may find an article or two from other Media sources who at 114

I am not expecting perfection; however they do lie, sometimes with disastrous results. Misrepresentations, justifications for promoting false impressions that influence our perceptions which cause faulty judgments and possible untoward acts on persons are theirs. This editorial is not a condemnation of Bill O'Reilly, but of our Media. It is a roast for every person who calls themselves Journalist or information Provider and reported falsely without checking facts or failed to report corrections; reported false stories with the intent to do harm or has taken part in activities which were criminal. Even now our Media skillfully dodges any reports about which US Journalists and News agencies may have been involved in the hacking and official bribing scandal. The purpose of the First Amendment Right was to allow our Media to report wrong doing without fear of reprisal. It was not created to use this "Right" to do wrong without reprisal or punishment. In order for a field which employs or provides a living to hundreds of thousands who purport themselves as servants of reliable and credible information our Media will have to do a lot better to regain our trust and respect. We are asking for a bill that would make it unlawful to defame a person who is deceased. Slander and libel are not protected under the First Amendment while a person is living. The same protection should be extended to a person after they are deceased. By means of the Mummy, mankind, it is said, Attests to the gods its respect for the dead. We plunder his tomb, be he sinner or saint, Distil him for physic and grind him for paint, Exhibit for money his poor, shrunken frame, And with levity flock to the scene of the shame. O, tell me, ye gods, for the use of my rhyme: For respecting the dead what's the limit of time?

What is the Innocence Project? How did it get started? The Innocence Project is a national litigation and public policy organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through DNA testing and reforming the criminal justice system to prevent future injustice. The Innocence Project was founded at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University in 1992, and became an independent nonprofit organization (still closely affiliated with Cardozo) in 2004. Since the organization’s founding, 317 people have been exonerated through DNA testing in the United States, including 18 who were at one time sentenced to death. The Innocence Project was involved in 173 of the 317 DNA exonerations. Others were helped by Innocence Network organizations, private attorneys and by pro se defendants in a few instances. WATCHMAN ON THE WALL This segment of the magazine was given the title of “Watchmen on the Wall”

be-

cause the “Watchmen” are persons, in the Michael Jackson Community, who carefully observe activities of the followers in the Michael Jackson community. The “Watchmen” give extra care to the conversations that tend to stir or arouse strong debates or arguments and generally keep their views to themselves and only serve.

The opinions which have no foundation of truth or cannot be verified are those that have, among many, caused unnecessary divisions. Although the

Watchmen’s opinions are just that, perhaps some sense can be made out of the interpretations they have to offer. We hope so. All Watchmen will remain anonymous to avoid confusion or more strong debates. These thoughts are merely the opinions of real people/fans. Just think of it as you would the “Dear Abby” column. Dear Abby gives her opinion

but at the end of the day it is still just an opinion.

The Watchman is on vacation and column will resume in April’s issue of WRGO magazine.

Francis #1 in Books Biographies & Memoirs ( J ) > Jackson, Michael Amazon USA 28, 29 May, 23 June + 2, 7 July 2013 (also an International Bestseller on Amazon) Hailed as the criminal trial of the century. Two years of speculation in the media. Wall to wall media coverage from 2003 to 2005, 2000+ accredited journalists, yet the defense case was invisible. The public were bombarded with salacious prosecution focused media commentary. On 13 June 2005 Michael Jackson was acquitted of 10 felony charges and 4 misdemeanors. Those disgruntled in the media, labelled the acquittal celebrity justice. If you want to find out the truth, start reading this book. This is a unique book looking at the trial testimony. It provides an indepth look at the trial from the first day. It offers the reader an insight into the case that was not provided by the media coverage in 2005.
