How may teachers properly teach about religion race and politics in this election year? In this workshop we will hear lectures by experts, engage in primary source document analysis, and spend time discussing techniques and attitudes that will be both useful and legally proper as you go to address these hot-button issues in the classroom. Carrico, Senior Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia and the John Marshall Foundation staff together with Tameka Hobbs, Education Coordinator for the Library of Virginia and Lesley David, Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court of Virginia For: Government,US History, Civics Teachers--high school and middle school Minimum: 12 Maximum: 30 Starts at: Arrive 8 - 8:30. Program begins at 8:30 a.m. Ends at: 3:15 p.m Description: The morning events will be held at the Marshall House, home for many years of the Great Chief Justice, John Marshall. Senior Justice Harry L. Carrico of the Virginia Supreme Court will speak on "The Judicial Philosophy of John Marshall". This will be followed by a presentation of our "Justice in the Classroom" program (with handouts and classroom resources). Many of the Virginia SOL's related to our Nation's judicial system are targeted in this program. Several of Marshall's most significant cases will be featured as well. Teachers next will take a guided tour of the Marshall House--the oldest free-standing brick home in Richmond that is filled with many original furnishings. The morning session will wrap up with a wonderful video, " Mr. Chief Justice". Box lunches will be provided by Cateraide. For the afternoon sessions, we'll cross the street to enter the Library of Virginia. Ms. Tameka Hobbs, Education and Programs Coordinator at the Library, will introduce teachers to the many resources and programs available to support both teachers and students. Finally, we'll walk a little further down 9th Street to the Supreme Court of VIrginia where Ms. Lesley David, Deputy Clerk of the Supreme Court, will provide a guided tour of the Court. Teachers will have an opportunity to be in the main courtroom of the Supreme Court where the portraits of past justices are hung and where our seven justices hear actual cases.
Lunch: The Marshall Foundation will provide box lunches, water and soft drinks via Cateraide. If the weather is pleasant, teachers can eat outside in the beautiful garden area. We also have indoor space in the event of inclement weather or if they wish to eat indoors.
Extra: When teachers arrive at the Marshall House between 8:00 and 8:30, coffee, donuts and juice will be provided. No food or drinks may be taken into the House, except for one designated area. Previously unknown places - names like Cold Harbor and Gaines' Mill attained national significance for the key battles that were fought there. Explore these battlefields through our ranger guided tours, exhibits and electric battle maps. Discover our new podcast and GPS programs that will enhance classroom learning. Take a "Behind the Scenes" look at our newest park site, Rural Plains. Rural Plains has witnessed many historic events including the 1754 wedding of Patrick Henry and Sarah Shelton, and the May 1864 battle of Totopotomoy Creek, during which the Shelton house served as headquarters for General Winfield S. Hancock. Tour the site with Mike Andrus, acting Chief of Interpretation to learn about the many layers of history and planned preservation projects for this historic site. Richmond National Battlefield Park at Tredegar: Discover the Civil War Richmond at Historic Tredegar Iron Works Presented by: Tom Casey, Mike Gorman, Susan Pollok For: All Minimum: 10 Maximum: 40 Starts at: 9:00am Ends at: 3:00 / Evaluation Description: As the industrial center and political capital of the Confederacy, Richmond was the prize over which two mighty American armies contended in bloody battle from 1861 to 1865. Tredegar Iron works geared quickly into the industrial engine that sustained the Confederate war machine. Participants will gain a better understanding of Richmond’s vital role during the Civil War as an industrial, governmental, social and military city. Ranger-guided tours will explore Tredegar Iron Works by examining photographs, diaries, timelines, and artifacts to tell the stories of Richmond’s military and civilian populations, both black and white. Participants will learn the vital role played by artillery and simulate the actions of an 8 member gun crew. Ranger Mike Gorman will conduct a walking tour of Belle Isle, used as a Confederate prison camp during the Civil War. After Lunch visit the American Civil War Center's exhibit, In the Cause of Liberty and explore the Civil War's causes, course, and legacies on a national scale. The exhibit includes four state of the art films, maps, 150 artifacts and timelines, and interprets the Civil War from three perspectives: Union, Confederate and African American. Tour the grounds of Tredegar Iron Works with the Center's educator, Jenny Didas. Learn about the multicultural workforce, the leadership of Joseph Reid Anderson, and discover what living and working conditions were like for the men behind the iron production.

Virginia War Memorial: Virginia's Veterans: Their Stories and Sacrifice. Presented by: Jon Hatfield, Executive Director and Candice Shelton, Education Specialist For: US History - Middle and High School Minimum: 15 Maximum: 150 Starts at: Arrive 8:45 am, Begin 9:00 am Ends at: 11:00am Description: The names of 11,639 Virginians are etched in the glass and stone walls of the Shrine of Memory. Each bears silent testimony to their ultimate sacrifice and earns our undying gratitude. Preserving the memory of Virginia's fallen heroes and honoring this sacrifice and service has always been the mission of the Memorial. More recently, we have also made it our mission to teach history and instill patriotism through our growing education programs entitled, "See Freedom Speak." These SOL aligned programs will be discussed and include oral history documentaries (VIRGINIANS AT WAR), high school student seminars, summer teacher institutes, JROTC programs, monthly events and field trip opportunities.
