Notice of NCAA Probation

From 2007 to 2010 the University of Nebraska unintentionally reimbursed student-athletes for recommended textbooks as well as required textbooks through a failure to properly administer and monitor book scholarships. Only reimbursement for required books is permissible under NCAA rules. As a result, the NCAA placed the University of Nebraska on two-year probation, beginning in January of 2012. The NCAA did not impose additional penalties such as loss of scholarships, forfeiture of games, or a ban on postseason play. Rather, as a condition of probation, Nebraska will continue to educate student-athletes and staff thoroughly on NCAA bylaws and will notify prospective student-athletes of its probationary status.

Non-Discrimination Statement

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln does not discriminate based on gender, age, disability, race, color, religion, marital status, veteran’s status, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.

Junior Steffi Neisen, a two-time NGCA Scholastic All-American, leads the Huskers into the 2012-13 campaign.

A Tradition of Success

Coach Robin Krapfl continues to emphasize the principles of achieving excellence on and off the course in her 26th season as Nebraska's head coach. It shows. Since Krapfl took the reins in 1987, the Huskers have: Earned a nation-leading 61 NGCA Scholastic All-America honors. In 1992, all five of Krapfl’s starters were honored with this distinction. It was the first time in women’s college golf history that a team had accomplished such a feat. Again in 2003, five Nebraska starters earned Scholastic All-America honors. Won 97 academic all-conference awards.  Produced two NCAA All-Americans, two conference champions, the 1990 Edith Munson Award winner, a twotime TrueTemper Scholastic Award honoree, one Big 12 Golfer of the Year, one Nebraska Student-Athlete-of-the-Year and 23 all-conference (16 Big Eight, 6 All-Big 12, 1 All-Big Ten) awards. Qualified for 11 NCAA Regionals. Participated in the first three NCAA Tournaments in school history with trips in 2000, 2003 and 2006. Regularly finished in the top half of the conference standings. Posted a team GPA of 3.71 in 2006-07, the fifth-highest team GPA in the nation. Despite the past success of NU's program, Krapfl believes the best is yet to come.

Huskers Take Aim at 12th NCAA Regional

In their first season of Big Ten Conference competition in 2011-12, the Huskers just missed an NCAA Regional berth while finishing sixth at the Big Ten Tournament. Madeleine Sheils earned All-Big Ten honors while tying for third at the Big Ten Championships. She also earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional as an individual. Nebraska had its streak of three consecutive NCAA Regional bids end in 2008-09, but the Huskers will focus on earning their 12th regional bid since 1994 in 2012-13. NU advanced to its third consecutive regional in 2008, qualifying as the No. 17 seed in the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas. The Huskers missed a berth to the fourth NCAA Championships in school history by just one stroke, finishing in a tie for 10th with a score of 903 on the University of Texas Golf Course. NU qualified for regionals on the heels of a solid sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla. Along with their strong play on the course, all five starters in Nebraska’s lineup earned academic All-Big 12 recognition. In 2006-07, NU earned a second straight NCAA Regional bid with a fourth-place Big 12 finish. NU claimed three team tournament titles, led by All-Big 12 performer Elli Brown. NU also led the conference with five academic All-Big 12 selections.

11 NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

The Huskers produced one of the best seasons in school history in 2005-06, with a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Nebraska also posted its best-ever score at the NCAA Championships by firing a 1,221 over four rounds, 18 strokes better than the 1,239 NU shot at the 2000 NCAA Championships. The final-round 299 was NU’s best NCAA Championships mark in history. The 2005-06 Huskers finished eighth at the NCAA Central Regional after entering as the No. 15 seed in the 21-team field. The Huskers also tied for fourth at the Big 12 Championships at the Country Club of Lincoln. NU also produced the best team stroke average in school history (304.88). Stephanie Ruiz earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and finished in a tie for 38th at the 2006 NCAA Championships. In 2003, the Huskers played host to the NCAA Central Regional, held at Lincoln's Firethorn Golf Club. Nebraska was ranked 19th going into the tournament, but ascended to fifth place to qualify for the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskers closed the season strong by finishing 22nd at the NCAA Championships. NU finished with a four-round total of 1,281 led by Sarah Sasse’s 40th-place showing. Krapfl, a native of West Point, Neb., has been associated with the Husker program since 1979 when she played collegiate golf for Nebraska (1979-82). A three-year letterwinner, she graduated from Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1984. Krapfl went on to become a PGA Professional at The Country Club of Lincoln, where she worked as an assistant under head professional and former Husker coach Jerry Fisher. Krapfl also worked under Fisher as an assistant for the Huskers from 1984 to 1987. As head coach, Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 28 tournament titles. She is only the third coach in Nebraska women's golf history, following former men's coach Larry Romjue and Fisher. She is married to Richard Krapfl and the couple has two sons, Robert, born on Oct. 30, 1992, and Ryan, born Aug. 20, 1994.

Personal Information

Date of Birth Feb. 23, 1937 Family Wife: Nancy; Son: Mike; Daughters: Ann and Suzanne Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past four seasons. With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program as a whole, Osborne has made historic decisions to help the University of Nebraska athletic programs for years to come. In June of 2010, Osborne joined Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany to announce the Huskers would join the Big Ten beginning on July 1, 2011. Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten will continue to add Universitywide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come. Just a few months later, Osborne announced an aggressive expansion plan for the east side of Memorial Stadium that will increase attendance past 90,000 for the first time, while continuing Nebraska’s NCAA record-setting sellout streak. The expansion, which is set for completion before the 2013 football season, will include athletic and academic research components. In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on the 16,000-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14. The basketball programs, the wrestling program and many of NU’s other sports also have benefitted from the new Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The facility, which opened in October of 2011, includes practice and team areas, and greatly expanded athletic medicine and strength training areas. The Nebraska baseball and softball programs also received a new indoor practice facility that opened in the fall of 2001 at Haymarket Park. The first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s facilities began in the summer of 2010, as the Huskers broke ground on the Student Life Complex on the west side of Memorial Stadium. The complex, which opened in the fall of 2010, directly benefits every Husker student-athlete with expanded academic resources.

Hastings College (1959)

While Osborne has helped initiate landmark moves off the field, he has continued to help coaches and student-athletes focus on Nebraska’s tradition of competitive success. In 2011-12, 10 Husker teams finished among the top 25 in the nation, including the Nebraska football team’s New Year’s Day appearance in the Capital One Bowl. One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini, who had spent the 2003 campaign as NU’s defensive coordinator, has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with four consecutive nine-win seasons. Pelini’s Huskers have finished among the Associated Press top 25 in each of the last three seasons. The football program also contributed three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to Nebraska’s nation-leading total of 299 all-time, across all sports. Coach Mark Manning’s Husker wrestling program added a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. On the mat, NU tied for 21st at the NCAA Championships despite entering the season in what appeared to be a rebuilding year. The tradition-rich NU volleyball program captured the Huskers’ first-ever Big Ten Conference title in any sport in 2011, finishing No. 12 nationally while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coach John Cook’s squad has claimed four conference crowns since Osborne’s return to Nebraska. The Husker women’s gymnastics team led by Coach Dan Kendig added its first Big Ten championship, while finishing eighth nationally in 2012 for its third straight top 10 finish. The Nebraska women’s indoor track and field team contributed another Big Ten title. Coach Gary Pepin’s men added a tie for 11th at the NCAA Championships during the outdoor season for its best team finish since 2003, after tying for 23rd at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The NU men’s and women’s track and field teams have combined for four conference crowns, while producing eight top-20 finishes over the past five years. The NU women’s basketball team produced one of its best seasons in school history by rolling to a 24-9 record that included a run to the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Coach Connie Yori’s Huskers finished No. 17 in the final AP poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since Osborne’s return to Nebraska. The 2010 Huskers ran to the best season in school history with a Big 12 title and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth in 2010. Coach Scott Jacobson led the Nebraska women’s tennis team to the best season in school history in 2012, posting a school-record 24 wins and No. 16 final ranking. The Huskers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the third straight season the team has advanced to the postseason. The Husker men’s tennis program added its first two NCAA appearances in school history in 2010 and 2011. Coach Bill Straub’s bowling team added a third-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships, marking the program’s fifth straight top-eight showing. The Husker bowlers claimed the 2009 NCAA title. The Husker softball team made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2009 to 2011, while the Husker women’s golf and baseball programs both earned NCAA Regional bids in 2008. Osborne made his second coaching hire since his return to Nebraska, when he named two-time Major League All-Star, threetime Gold Glove award winner, and former No. 1 MLB Draft pick Darin Erstad as the baseball team’s new coach on June 2, 2011. Erstad was not only one of the best Husker baseball players in history, he was the starting punter on NU’s 1994 national championship football team coached by Osborne.

11 NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

The baseball program responded by posting a 35-23 record in his first season. It marked a five-game improvement in the win column over 2011. Osborne made another high-profile hire with the addition of men’s basketball coach Tim Miles on March 24, 2012. Osborne also hired former Husker Stacy Underwood as NU’s fourth rifle coach on May 24, 2012. Academically, Nebraska produced eight CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans in 2011-12, increasing its nation-leading total to 299 all-time, across all sports. NU also graduated a school-record 155 student-athletes from August of 2011 through May of 2012. Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to Nebraska as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006. He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991. TeamMates provides encouragement to schoolaged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season. In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998. Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons. Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games. In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history. Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska’s Athletic Director from 1967 to 1993. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren.

Marc BOEHM

Bob BURTON

Executive Associate A.D. 10th Season Kansas State (1984)

Associate A.D. 15th Season Nebraska (1985)

A member of the Nebraska Athletics senior administration since May 2003, Marc Boehm (pronounced BAME) serves as executive associate athletic director and is the top assistant to the athletic director. Boehm fulfills the director’s responsibilities in his absence and also serves as the department’s chief operating officer. Boehm oversees the efforts of several areas within athletics, including marketing, media relations, HuskerVision, facilities and events. Boehm also oversees the Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs and the Husker soccer program. He also played a major role in the athletic department’s negotiations for its contract extension with IMG College Sports. To date, it is the largest multi-media rights contract in college athletics. As the primary administrator for the NU basketball programs, Boehm played an integral role in the hiring of Tim Miles as the Huskers’ new coach in March of 2012. Boehm has worked to create a fan-friendly atmosphere at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, which has helped Nebraska to record-setting attendance for women’s basketball at the Devaney Center. Under Boehm’s supervision, Coach Connie Yori’s women’s basketball team enjoyed the best season in school history in 2009-10. The Huskers made their seventh straight postseason trip, advancing to the school’s first NCAA Sweet 16. Yori captured 2010 National Coach-ofthe-Year honors by leading the Huskers to a Big 12 record-tying 30-game winning streak and the 2010 Big 12 regular-season title. NU ranked in the top 10 in the final national polls and seventh nationally in home attendance with 7,390 fans per game. In conference play, NU led the league with 11,383 fans per game. The Husker women added their fourth NCAA Tournament trip in the past six seasons in 2012, after running to a runner-up finish at their inaugural Big Ten Tournament. The men have added four postseason trips during Boehm’s tenure, including a trip to the 2011 Postseason NIT. Boehm has also played an integral role in the planning of Nebraska’s new Pinnacle Bank Arena for men’s and women’s basketball, which is scheduled to open for the 2013-14 season. He also worked to help develop Nebraska’s new practice facility - the Hendricks Training Complex - which opened at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in October of 2011. Boehm has also played a part in helping the Nebraska athletic department make a functional transition to the Big Ten Conference in 2011-12. Boehm was instrumental in conceptualizing and developing the Husker Nation Pavilion, which quickly became the premier pregame event around home football games. Boehm also took the lead role in obtaining First National Bank and Ameritas as premier sponsors for the Nebraska Athletic Department for a combined deal worth more than $7 million over a three-year period. First National Bank and Ameritas joined Verizon, Pepsi and adidas as premier corporate sponsors for Husker athletics. Boehm held the same position at Pittsburgh from 1997 to 2003. Boehm assisted in the rise of the Panthers’ basketball program with the men’s team posting back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. During construction of the Panthers’ new athletic facilities, Boehm played a central role in Pitt’s athletic teams moving to the UPMC Sports Performance Complex, Heinz Field and the Petersen Events Center. Boehm served as interim athletic director at Pittsburgh for nearly five months before coming to Nebraska. During that time, he hired new men’s (Jamie Dixon) and women’s basketball (Agnus Berenato) and soccer (Sue-Moy Chin) head coaches for the Panther program. Boehm also spent five years as associate executive director of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. He directed and managed a 125-member fund-raising committee of Arizona business people responsible for generating more than $4.5 million in cash and in-kind partnerships. Previously he spent four years as associate executive director and public relations director of the Sun Bowl from 1987 to 1991. Born in Grand Island, Boehm earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Kansas State in 1984 and added a master’s degree in sports management from St. Thomas (Fla.) University in 1985. Boehm and his wife, the former Janelle Broderick of Minot, N.D., have three boys, Broderick, Christian and Lukas John.

Associate Athletic Director Bob Burton joined the Nebraska athletic department in 1998. He spent 10 years as associate athletic director for compliance/sports administration from 1998 to 2007. Burton is responsible for the direct administrative supervision to the sports of golf, tennis, men’s gymnastics, track and field, cross country, bowling, wrestling and swimming and diving. He also oversees the operation of Haymarket Park. Working with the Lincoln Saltdogs, he helps set the budget for field and stadium operation costs and create strategic plans for the facility. Burton is a member of the athletic department’s executive team, which helps set policy, develops short- and long-term goals and objectives, and creates strategic plans for the department. Burton also reviews and monitors compliance with all contracts for the athletic department. Burton filled a similar position at Oklahoma State as the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sports programs as well as the training and strength and conditioning, wrestling, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s tennis programs. Burton came to Nebraska from Texas Tech, where he served as an associate athletic director for compliance for one year. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyzed the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department. Burton, who was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer committee for three years and was a member of the NCAA Division I bowling committee, served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in the development of legislation, interpretation of regulations and reviewed legal issues related to the application of the association’s regulations. He served as an NCAA liaison to committees and conducted comprehensive education to several intercollegiate athletic conferences. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance. He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the Nebraska College of Law in 1989. A native of Falls City, Neb., Burton and his wife, Krista, have a daughter, Elly, and sons Robert Falk, McClain John and Abram Lawslo.

Pat LOGSDON Associate A.D./SWA 33rd Season Nebraska (1989) A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon was promoted to senior woman administrator on March 7, 2008, in addition to her duties as associate athletic director for administration. She previously served in the role of assistant athletic director. Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office; oversight in the areas of administration, athletic medicine, nutrition and the athletic training table, football operations, softball, women’s gymnastics and rifle; developing and implementing administrative policies and procedures, assisting with strategic planning, reviewing and maintaining game and coaching contracts and oversight of the administrative budget. Previously, Logsdon spent six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations. Logsdon served three years as assistant to the director of football operations and 14 seasons as the football recruiting secretary. Logsdon received a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1989

Young Huskers Hope to Contend in Big Ten

The Nebraska women’s golf team will be one of the youngest in the Big Ten and the nation in 2012-13. Returning starters Steffi Neisen and Katelyn Wright will lead a nine-player Husker roster that is without any seniors. The remainder of the roster consists of seven freshmen, including four true freshmen and a trio of redshirts. “This year looks to be a rebuilding year on paper, with only two returning starters and no other players with collegiate experience,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “But the potential is there for us to become a pretty good team. Steffi and Katelyn will need to provide strong leadership on and off the golf course to help our young team grow and develop.” Neisen has plenty of experience to draw upon as she assumes the role of a leader. The junior from New Prague, Minn., has been in the Husker lineup for 65 consecutive rounds in her first two seasons. She completed her sophomore season with Nebraska’s No. 2 stroke average (76.67) in 2011-12. Her year included a school-record round of 66 at the Mountain View Collegiate on March 23. She notched three top-10 tournament finishes on the year, including a tie for second at the Alamo Invitational, Oct. 30Nov. 1, when she fired a career-best 214 over three rounds. She closed her second year in Nebraska’s starting lineup by tying for 25th at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. “I think Steffi is ready and excited to be the leader of this team. In fact, I think she will thrive in this role,” Krapfl said. “She has the personality and drive to be a role model for the younger players. We have been very fortunate the last two years to have great senior leadership for her to learn from and build on.” A standout in the classroom and in the community, Neisen was honored as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient, while also earning academic All-Big Ten honors. She also captured NGCA Scholastic All-America recognition for the second straight year. “As a coach it is exciting when a player suddenly ‘gets it’ and starts blossoming in front of your eyes. We see that happening with Steffi,” Krapfl said. “We have been telling her from day one how good she is and can become, and as her list of accomplishments grows, she is starting to believe.” Wright was also in the starting lineup throughout the 2011-12 campaign. The junior from Incline Village, Nev., competed in all 33 rounds for the Huskers and continued to shave strokes off her game as the season progressed. She started slow and battled some health issues in the fall, but came on strong in the spring. In one three-tournament stretch, Wright averaged 75.77, including a career-best 218 at the Westbrook Invitational in Peoria, Ariz. “At the Westbrook tournament Katelyn really showed what she is capable of doing and so much more,” Krapfl said. “Katelyn is a dynamic player. When things are on, she is amazing to watch because she makes it look so easy. Katie has a beautiful golf swing with the length to be able to dominate the course. “I’m really excited to see what Katelyn will do this year. She has the ability to not only be our most improved player, but also one of the most improved in the Big Ten. When you take a multi-sport athlete like Katie was, it takes a couple of years to catch up with those players who only played golf. But when that athlete breaks out, great things can happen. With Katie’s work ethic, she has put in the time it takes and is ready to break out.” The remaining spots in Nebraska’s lineup will be filled by freshmen. Second-year Huskers Jackie O’Doherty, Morgan Smejkal and Cassidy Stelzmiller all redshirted in their first seasons in Nebraska’s program in 2011-12. “All three redshirt freshmen worked extremely hard to expand their games and hone their skills. It is exciting to see players really take advantage of that year to work hard and improve,” Krapfl said. “The three of them really embraced the year away from competition, putting in long hours of tedious practice to be ready to compete this season.”

Steffi Neisen returns to lead the Nebraska lineup in 2012-13. The junior from New Prague, Minn., is a two-year starter for the Huskers and posted Nebraska’s No. 2 stroke average in 2011-12. She is also a two-time NGCA Scholastic All-American.

O’Doherty, a two-time Nebraska Class A state champion at Lincoln East High School, was a three-time Class A all-state pick in golf. She was also a member of the 2011 Four State Team and the 2010 Nebraska Junior Golf All-Star Team. She was also a competitive swimmer and posted better than a 4.0 GPA at Lincoln East. “Jackie is a a great student with a wonderful personality and a good work ethic. She has good length, a solid golf swing and possesses a strong competitive side,” Krapfl said. “She is coming off a hand injury that had her sidelined much of the summer, but it may be a blessing in disguise because she was forced to only work on her short game. It is going to be a battle between the freshmen to see who emerges into a prominent role in the lineup, but I would not be surprised if Jackie captures one of those spots.” Smejkal, a Columbus, Neb., native, was a two-time Class A all-state selection and produced a pair of top-five finishes at the state tournament. She was also a member of the Nebraska Junior Golf All-Star Team in 2009 and 2010, and she was a member of the 2010 and 2011 Nebraska Four State Team. She was also an outstanding basketball player who set Columbus High’s three-point record. “Morgan was recruited as an athlete with potential to develop into a college-level golfer, and she has embraced that goal,” Krapfl said. “We have had quite a few hard-working athletes in my tenure, and Morgan’s work ethic is right up there with the best. You’ve got to love a kid who gives it her all in everything she does. Not only that, she has also embraced what being a great teammate is all about. Morgan has good length, is meticulous in her thought process and hates to lose. As soon as she can get away from thinking too much and just play, she could develop into one heck of a player.” Stelzmiller was a highly regarded recruit from Placerville, Calif., who had success as a junior player. She competed in several major events, including the Women’s Trans. “We headed into last season thinking Cassidy could help us right away, and even though I think she could have, I’m glad she elected to take the year off and develop her game. It is exciting to think of how far she can progress in the next four years,” Krapfl said. “She has excellent length and a great touch on the greens. With a year of maturity, we are hoping for big things from Cassidy.” The final ingredients to Nebraska’s 2012-13 team come from four true freshmen, including two international players. The freshmen will all be given an opportunity to compete for positions in the lineup.

11 NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES

Cassie Deeg could make an immediate impact. The Hugo, Minn., native captured the 2011 Minnesota state title while helping Stillwater Area High School to runner-up team finishes in both 2011 and 2012. Deeg added a third-place individual Class 3A finish in 2012, and was also the Minnesota Women’s Match Play runner-up. “Cassie will be pushing those juniors for the top spot in our lineup, which I love,” Krapfl said. “It just makes our team that much better. Cassie is a complete player, with good length, solid play in all areas of the game, and she is a proven winner. Plus she is a quality student with a wonderful personality.” Another true freshman with an excellent chance to contribute early is Hannah Luebke. One of the top young golfers in Germany, Luebke became the first European player to sign with the Huskers since Catha Fogelberg (Sweden) in 1997-98. A native of Stuttgart, Luebke is the second German to join the Huskers in history, following in the footsteps of Shirin Hornecker (Munich), who played for Nebraska from 1996 to 1998. Luebke finished second in the BWGW International Match Play and third at the German Youth National Championships. At 6-foot-1, Luebke was also an All-German performer as a middle blocker/outside hitter on the volleyball court in both 2009 and 2010. “Hannah’s strength lies in her long game,” Krapfl said. “As her short game develops, she will become a formidable force in our lineup. I’ve always enjoyed the cultural exchange that takes place when you add international players to your team, and Hannah’s personality is going to fit right in.” Another player adding international flavor is Yoorim Kang from Toronto, Ontario. A walk-on, Kang is expected to add depth for the Huskers while she adjusts to the collegiate game. “I wasn’t really looking to add any players, but I was so impressed with Yoorim’s desire to walk on and prove herself,” Krapfl said. “Anyone who is that motivated deserves a chance. Yoorim has a nice golf swing. She needs to lower her scores consistently, but if she can do that, she may have a chance to be in the battle for a lineup spot. She has played in some good tournaments and has the experience to know what it takes to compete at this level.” Nebraskan Abbie Hunke rounds out the 2012-13 Husker roster. The walk-on from Snyder, Neb., finished fourth as a senior in the 2011 Nebraska Class B State Tournament for West Point-Beemer/Scribner-Snyder. She also finished eighth

at the 2010 Class C State Tournament, after competing her first two years of high school on the boys team. Hunke enjoyed a strong summer of 2012, competing on the Nebraska Four State Team, while also advancing to the semifinals of the Nebraska Junior Match Play Championships. An outstanding all-around athlete, Hunke played three years of high school basketball and also competed in softball. “Abbie is another one of those Nebraska kids who is an athlete, having been an outstanding basketball player in high school,” Krapfl said. “It would probably benefit Abbie to redshirt to give her a year to develop her all-around game, but we are so young you just never know what is going to happen. Abbie has good length, which helps when adjusting to collegiate courses.” Nebraska’s young squad will be challenged by an outstanding schedule that tees off at its own Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln, Sept. 10-11. The Huskers hit the road for the first time by traveling to The Golfweek Challenge in Vail, Colo., Sept. 24-26, where they will face 17 teams from 17 conferences. NU then heads to the Prices New Mexico State Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., Oct. 8-10. The following week the Huskers will compete in the Missouri State/Payne Stewart Memorial, Oct. 15-16, in Springfield, Mo., before concluding the fall season at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 28-30. The spring schedule tees off at Purdue’s Lady Puerto Rico Invitational, Feb. 10-12, in Rio Mar, P.R. NU then journeys to Peoria, Ariz., to compete in the Westbrook Spring Invite, Feb. 24-25. Two weeks later, the Huskers return to Arizona to compete in Notre Dame’s Clover Cup in Mesa, March 8-10. The Huskers close the regular season at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational, April 5-7, before competing at the 2013 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., April 26-28. The Huskers will seek their 12th NCAA Regional bid since 1994 when they head to their second Big Ten Tournament. NCAA Regional competitions will be held in Norman, Okla. (Central), Stanford, Calif. (West) and Auburn, Ala. (East), before Athens, Ga., plays host to the NCAA Championships, May 21-24. “Our schedule is set up for our young players to experience success, while challenging them against the nation’s best,” Krapfl said. “I’m excited to see this team develop and grow. They have the talent and the game. When the confidence and belief matches it, great things can happen.

Roster/Schedule Information

The Country Club of Lincoln will play host to the 2012 Chip-N Club Invitational, Monday, Sept. 10 and Tuesday, Sept. 11. It will mark the second consecutive season that the Country Club has played host to Nebraska’s annual season-opening invitational. The Huskers finished fourth among a 15-team field in 2011-12.

Steffi is the daughter of Chris and Angie Neisen, and has a younger sister, McKenzie, and a younger brother, Thomas. Neisen made an early commitment to the Husker golf program, choosing Nebraska before her junior season of high school in 2009. She received offers from several Big Ten and Big 12 schools. Steffi is majoring in pre-social science education at Nebraska, and earned NGCA Scholastic All-America honors in 2011 and 2012. She was an academic All-Big Ten selection in 2012, and claimed spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2011-12. She was also a two-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection.

New Prague, Minn. (New Prague)

Outlook (2012-13)

Steffi Neisen returns as Nebraska’s most experienced golfer in 201213. The junior from New Prague, Minn., has competed in all 65 rounds in the Husker lineup the past two seasons with a career 76.89 stroke average. As a sophomore, Neisen capped a strong season as NU’s No. 2 golfer by tying for 25th at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Neisen has proven that she can go low, notching the best single-round score in school history with a six-under 66 in the second round of the 2012 Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz. She enjoyed a strong summer, tying for second (70-68-138) in stroke play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Publinks Championships to qualify for the match play portion of the national event for the first time in her career. Neisen’s score trailed only 2012 USC All-American Lisa McCloskey (70-67-137) in Neshanic Station, N.J. As a junior, Neisen will be counted on to provide leadership and consistency at the top of the Husker lineup. “As a coach it is exciting when a player suddenly ‘gets it’ and starts blossoming in front of your eyes. We see that happening with Steffi,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “We have been telling her from day one how good she is and can become, and as her list of accomplishments grows, she is starting to believe.”

Sophomore (2011-12)

Neisen ranked second among the Huskers with a 76.67 stroke average while playing in all 33 rounds. She produced five top-25 finishes, including a trio of top-10 showings and the first top-five finish of her career with a tie for second at the 2011 Alamo Invitational to close NU’s fall campaign. Neisen’s performance at the Alamo Invite, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, was capped by a final-round 69 on her way to a career-best 214 tournament total. She opened with an even-par 72 in the first round and a 73 in the second round. Neisen was the Big Ten Golfer of the Week (Nov. 3, 2011). She added a school-record 66 in the second round of the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., March 23. She had an opening-round 75 and a final-round 74 to finish with the second-best tournament total (215) of her career to tie for seventh. Outlook (2012-13)

Katelyn Wright is one of two returning starters to the Husker lineup in 2012-13, joining fellow junior Steffi Neisen. Wright improved throughout her sophomore season and competed in all 33 rounds. She capped her first full season in the NU lineup by finishing 48th at the Big Ten Championships. Wright will try to continue to shave strokes off her game while becoming more consistent in the heart of the Husker lineup. “I’m really excited to see what Katelyn will do this year. She has the ability to not only be our most improved player, but also one of the most improved in the Big Ten,” Coach Robin Krapfl said. “When you take a multi-sport athlete like Katie was, it takes a couple of years to catch up with those players who only played golf. But when that athlete breaks out, great things can happen. With Katie’s work ethic, she has put in the time it takes and is ready to break out.”

Sophomore (2011-12)

Wright was a regular in the Nebraska lineup as a sophomore, competing in all 33 rounds. The Incline Village, Nev., native showed steady improvement, posting the Huskers’ No. 5 stroke average (79.06). She closed the season by tying for 48th (84-80-73-237) at the 2012 Big Ten Tournament on the Ross Course in French Lick, Ind. Her final-round 73 was the third-best round of the tournament by a Husker, trailing only a pair of 71s by Madeleine Sheils. Over her final 15 rounds of the spring, Wright produced a 77.20 stroke average. Wright opened the year by tying for 38th (82-82-79-243) at the Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln, Sept. 12-13. In 2008, she won the title by a staggering 28 strokes over just two rounds, to help Incline to a state runner-up finish as a team. Wright’s stroke average for her senior season was a 72, and she led the Highlanders to their first state team title since 2002, crushing runner-up Battle Mountain by 108 strokes. As a junior golfer, Wright was a four-time qualifier for the Callaway Junior World Championships and was a three-time member of the Junior America’s Cup team. lineup. I’ve always enjoyed the cultural exchange that takes place when you add international players to your team, and Hannah’s personality is going to fit right in.”

High School/Amateur

Luebke placed third at the German Youth National Championships and first at the state youth team championships. She also placed second at the BWGW International Match Play. Her high school did not sponsor golf, but she competed for the Stuttgarter Golf Club Solitude in the second Bundesliga in 2010 and 2011 for Coach Heiko Burkhardt. An outstanding all-around athlete, Luebke competed in volleyball, tennis and track and field at Schickhardt Gymnasium. At 6-foot-1, Luebke was an All-German performer as a middle

blocker/outside hitter in both 2009 and 2010. She was a threetime first-team all-state volleyball player in 2008, 2009 and 2010. She was also a three-time regional champion in the heptathlon in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

Personal

Hannah is the daughter of Rolf and Ulrike Luebke and was born in Stuttgart, Germany, on Nov. 28, 1993. She has an older brother, Lars. Hannah is majoring in international business at Nebraska. She chose Nebraska over Kansas State, UNC-Greensboro, Old Dominion and Troy State.

Yoorim Kang was the final addition to the Nebraska roster for the 2012-13 season. A walk-on from Toronto, Ontario, Kang has competed against some of Canada’s top players during her prep career. “I wasn’t really looking to add any players, but I was so impressed with Yoorim’s desire to walk-on and prove herself,” Nebraska Coach Krapfl said. “Anyone who is that motivated deserves a chance. Yoorim has a nice golf swing. She needs to

lower her scores consistently, but if she can do that, she may have a chance to be in the battle for a lineup spot. She has played in some good tournaments and has the experience to know what it takes to compete at this level.”

High School/Amateur

A member of Team Ontario, Kang has been a regular competitor in Golf Association of Ontario tournaments. She closed 2011 teaming with Meghan McDougall to win the Ontario Women’s Four-Ball Championship with a three-under-par 69 at Sleepy Hollow Golf and Country Club in Stoufville. Kang added a seventh-place finish at the Juvenile Girls’ Championship at the Loyalist Country Club with a three-round total of 238. She added a trip to the quarterfinals in the GAO Junior Girls’ Match Play at the Barcovan Golf Club.

THREE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES

Sheils Leads Huskers in First Big Ten Season Seniors Madeleine Sheils, Kayla Knopik and Katie Keiser led a relatively experienced Nebraska women’s golf team to a successful first season of Big Ten competition in 2011-12. The Huskers worked their way onto the bubble for an NCAA Regional berth late in the season, before coming up short. Nebraska, which closed the team portion of its season with a sixth-place finish at the 12-team 2012 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., produced nine top10 tournament finishes on the year, including five top-five showings. In Coach Robin Krapfl’s 25th season at the helm of the Husker program, Sheils produced one of the best individual seasons by a Husker in the past decade. The senior from Boise, Idaho, earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, after capturing All-Big Ten honors. Sheils produced 10 top-25 individual tournament finishes on the year, including seven top-10 performances. She captured a tournament title at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational in Sammamish, Wash., Oct. 3-5, with a threeround total of 214 that included a career-best 67 in the final round. She added a career-best three-round score of 212 to take sixth at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., March 23-24. Sheils tied for third at the Big Ten Championships with a three-round score of 218 on a challenging layout at the Ross Course. Her performance in Indiana included a pair of one-under-par 71s in the second and third rounds. For the season, Sheils played nine of her 36 rounds at or below par. She finished in a tie for 75th at the NCAA Central Regional, but was in the hunt for a bid to the NCAA Championships through the first two rounds before struggling in the final round. A four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar as a senior, Sheils led the Huskers with a 74.67 stroke average in 2011-12 - the third-best single-season average in school history. Her career 76.88 stroke average ranked No. 2 in the Nebraska record book. “Maddie was a tremendous worker, a great leader and an outstanding representative of the Nebraska women’s golf program for four years,” Krapfl said. “She deserved all the success she had at Nebraska because she was willing to put in the work to become the best golfer she could be. She was also an outstanding person, and I think that will be the legacy that she leaves with our future teams.” Knopik, a fifth-year senior from Papillion, Neb., provided the Huskers with the best year of her career in 2011-12. Her 76.88 stroke average ranked third on the team, and she closed her career with a strong 17th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. She produced five top-25 finishes on the year, including a tie for sixth at the Huskers’ season-opening Chip-N Club Invitational at the

Madeleine Sheils captured All-Big Ten honors on the course and in the classroom with an outstanding 2011-12 season. The senior from Boise, Idaho, became the first Husker in history to earn All-Big Ten honors with her tie for third at the 2012 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind. The four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American also earned an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Central Regional.

Country Club of Lincoln, Sept. 12-13. She added a tie for 13th with a career-best 219 at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 30-Nov. 1. Knopik’s performance at the Alamo included a career-best second-round 69. “Kayla was a steady performer in our lineup her junior and senior seasons and competed at three conference tournaments for us,” Krapfl said. “She was a great example of the kind of improvement you can make as a golfer if you set your mind to your goals and work extremely hard to accomplish them.” Keiser joined Sheils and Knopik in Nebraska’s Big Ten Tournament lineup after also appearing at the Big 12 Championships in 2011. Keiser, a Gothenburg, Neb., native, competed in six tournaments in the Husker lineup as a senior to earn her second NU letter after transferring to Nebraska from Winthrop. While the seniors led Nebraska in 2011-12, a trio of sophomores played major roles in the Husker fortunes. Steffi Neisen remained one of the top players in the NU lineup for the second straight season by finishing with a 76.67 stroke average on the year. The New Prague, Minn., native produced five top-25 tournament finishes, including a tie for 25th at the Big Ten Championships to close her season. Sheils on the NGCA Scholastic All-America team for the second straight season, while also earning academic All-Big Ten honors. “Steffi has had two of the best freshman and sophomore seasons in Nebraska history, and she just continues to grow in both skill and confidence,” Krapfl said. “It will be exciting to see her continue to grow and blossom into a leadership role for our team as her career continues at Nebraska.” Katelyn Wright was also a regular in the Husker lineup in 2011-12. The sophomore from Incline Village, Nev., shaved strokes off her game throughout the season. She enjoyed a solid spring that included a 15th-place finish with a career-best 218 at the Westbrook Spring Invitational. Wright added a tie for 21st in the BYU at Entrada Classic, before capping her season with a tie for 48th as NU’s No. 4 finisher at the Big Ten Championships. Her performance in Indiana included a final-round 73. Remylee Molyneux rounded out the Husker lineup at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. The sophomore from Thousand Oaks, Calif., stepped into a lineup spot in Nebraska’s final two tournaments of the spring after freshman Shelby Martinek’s season-ending wrist injury. Molyneux finished her only conference tournament appearance in 64th after also closing in 64th at the Ohio State Spring Invitational to close the regular season. Martinek competed in seven tournaments on the year, including five inside the Husker lineup, but made her final appearance of the year at the Westbrook Spring Invitational, Feb. 26-27. She tied for 21st with a career-best 221 over three rounds in Peoria, Ariz. “I was proud of the way our team worked and competed throughout the year,” Krapfl said. “I thought our seniors did a great job of leading our team and putting us in a position to succeed. I was also pleased with the progress that both Steffi and Katelyn made during the season. The examples our seniors set for both Steffi and Katelyn in leadership will form the foundation for the future success of our program.”

NEBRASKA

ebraska continues to add to its impressive tradition of success in women’s golf. In 2012, Madeleine Sheils became the first golfer in Husker history to earn All-Big Ten honors by taking third in Nebraska’s first-ever Big Ten Tournament. Sheils, who went on to compete at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, capped one of the top careers in school history as a four-time NGCA Scholastic All-American.

In 2008, the Huskers earned their 11th trip to the NCAA Regional Championships, just missing a bid to the 24-team NCAA Championships. The Huskers have finished among the top 24 teams in the nation three times in the past 13 seasons. In 2006, the Huskers posted the best NCAA Championship score in school history, while finishing 20th at the event. Entering her 26th season at the helm of the Nebraska women’s golf program, Coach Robin Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 28 tournament titles, 11 NCAA Regional appearances and all three of the school’s NCAA Tournament bids. Husker women’s golfers epitomize Nebraska’s commitment to success in athletics, academics and life. Husker golfers have captured a nation-leading 61 NGCA Scholastic All-America honors. The Husker women’s golf team is also one of NU’s most active teams in the community.

The 2006 Nebraska women’s golf team (main photo) enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history by finishing 20th at the NCAA Championships. Steph Ruiz (bottom left) matched the best four-round NCAA Tournament score in school history with a 301. Sarah Sasse (bottom middle) made history in 2003 when she earned first-team All-America honors for the Huskers. Sasse was also named the Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Year and led the 2003 Huskers (top right) to a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Sasse went on to be a competitor on the Golf Channel’s “Big Break III” in 2005. The 2000 Huskers (middle right) posted the best NCAA Championship finish in school history by taking 19th. Heidi Wall (bottom right) captured CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica honors for the Huskers in 1996. The Lincoln native helped NU to three straight NCAA Regional appearances from 1994 to 1996.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS The success of Nebraska student-athletes reaches far beyond athletic competition. More Husker student-athletes have been selected to CoSIDA Academic All-America teams (299) than any other school in the nation, and Nebraska has produced more NCAA Top Eight Award winners (16) than any other school. As it enters its second season of Big Ten Conference competition in 2012-13, Nebraska continues to set the standard for the approximately 1,400 NCAA member institutions. The Husker football team leads all individual sport programs in the nation with 102 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. The Penn State football program ranks second among all sports nationally with 60 all-time academic All-Americans. In fact, Nebraska's 102 football academic All-Americans would rank among the top 25 schools (all sports, all divisions) in the nation in the number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. The NU volleyball program has captured more academic All-America awards (36) than any other women’s team in the nation, while the Husker softball program ranks second on that list with 29 selections. Nebraska also ranks among the top 10 schools in the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in baseball, women's basketball and men’s and women’s track and field/cross country. Over the past two years, the men's and women's track and field programs have produced 10 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans the most in the nation during that span.

Huskers Build on Academic Tradition in 2011-12

Husker student-athletes produced another stellar year at the University of Nebraska, continuing NU’s tradition of academic success. Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports to 299 with a Big Ten Conference-leading eight honorees in 2011-12. A total of 190 Husker student-athletes captured academic All-Big Ten honors, while Huskers earned 667 spots on the All Sports as of August 2012 Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll during the fall and spring semesters.

Academic All-Americans 299

The Nebraska football team led an impressive showing in the classroom for the Huskers, as Austin Cassidy, Rex Burkhead and Sean Fisher all claimed CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Cassidy, who became the 24th Husker football player in history to be a twotime academic All-American, earned first-team honors as a senior safety. Cassidy was joined on the first team by Burkhead, who rolled to 1,357 rushing yards as a junior I-back in 2011. Fisher, a junior linebacker, added second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades. A total of 47 Husker football players earned bachelor's degrees in 2011-12, while 27 Huskers earned academic All-Big Ten awards.

223 183 175

Track and field All-Americans Tyler Hitchler and Ashley Miller led an impressive season for Coach Gary Pepin’s program. Hitchler, an All-American on and off the track during his career, claimed Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Year award. A first-team AllAmerican in the discus in 2012, Hitchler was also NU's male recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. A two-time Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award winner and a four-time member of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Hitchler was accepted into medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Miller, a three-time All-American on the track, was a co-captain of both the NU women's cross country and track and field teams in 2011-12. The 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-American was NU's female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the women's track and field team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner. The track and field program added a trio of 2012 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, led by senior Bjorn Barrefors who became just the 13th Husker in history across all sports to be a three-time academic All-American. The multi-eventer from Stockholm, Sweden, was joined on the 2012 first team by senior Nate Polacek, who earned a spot on the academic All-America team for the second straight season. Junior distance runner Brett Grieb added a third-team CoSIDA Academic All-America award.

The Nebraska wrestling team also produced a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans for the first time in program history. Heavyweight Tucker Lane claimed first-team honors to close his career as a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. Lane, who also earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship worth $7,500, was joined by second-team academic All-American Josh Ihnen. The junior added All-America honors on the mat as well for the Huskers in 2012. Lane was joined by softball’s Nikki Haget, Hitchler and Miller in earning NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships for the Huskers in 2011-12. Across all sports, Nebraska student-athletes claimed 190 academic All-Big Ten selections, just two shy of its Big 12-record-setting total of 192 in 2010-11. The Husker baseball (17), women's tennis (7), bowling (4) and women's rifle (4) teams all led the Big Ten in academic All-Big Ten selections, while the NU football (27), softball (10) and men's golf teams (6) all ranked second among conference schools. Over the past four years, Nebraska has claimed nearly 740 academic all-conference certificates across all sports. Huskers also earned 667 spots on the first Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll, which recognizes student-athletes who produce 3.0 or better gradepoint averages in the fall or spring semesters. Husker student-athletes also produced 92 perfect 4.0 GPA semesters during the 2011-12 academic year. The hard work, dedication and commitment of Nebraska’s student-athletes in the classroom resulted in a record-setting 155 current or former student-athletes earning degrees from August of 2011 through May of 2012. Each spring Nebraska hosts its annual Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet to honor Huskers who have earned either a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA or have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA in the previous calendar year. In the spring of 2012, Husker student-athletes earned 321 academic honors medallions.

THE NEBRASKA ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 75 tutors addressing all subject areas.

Academic Counseling

Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.

Tutorial Support

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.

Study Hall

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Each student-athlete is required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. In addition, weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall may also be determined by the academic counselor.

This Is Nebraska

Mentoring

Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

Educational Assessments

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

Student-Athlete Orientation

The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

Personal Counseling

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

Computer Resources

Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with 58 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.

On July 1, 2011, the University of Nebraska became an official member of the Big Ten Conference, increasing the Big Ten’s membership to 12 institutions for the first time in conference history. The addition of Nebraska marked the Big Ten’s first expansion since Penn State University joined the conference in June of 1990. The conference’s 100-plus years of history, strong tradition of competitive intercollegiate athletic programs, vast and passionate alumni base, and consistent leadership in innovations position the Big Ten and its entire community firmly on the Big Stage. The Big Ten has sustained a comprehensive set of shared practices and policies that enforce the priority of academics and emphasize the values of integrity, fairness and competitiveness in all aspects of its student-athletes’ lives, with the ultimate goal of ensuring that each individual has the opportunity to live a Big Life.

Big Ten Conference Highlights • Big Ten universities provide approximately $136 million in direct financial aid to nearly 10,000 men and women student-athletes who compete for 25 championships. • Conference institutions sponsor broad-based athletic programs with 298 teams. During the 2011 volleyball campaign, the Big Ten led the nation with a total attendance of nearly 420,000. The Big Ten led the country in average attendance for the 36th straight season. • Over the last 33 seasons, the conference has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 nationally in football, men’s basketball and wrestling attendance. • The Big Ten leads all conferences with more than 4.5 million living alumni and 320,000 undergraduate students. • Based on the U.S. Census projected population for 2010, the nine-state Big Ten region accounts for approximately 70 million people, which ranks second only to the Big East and well ahead of the ACC, SEC, Pac-10 and Big 12.
