HUSKERS FOCUS ON BACK-TO-BACK TITLES IN 2016

The Nebraska bowling team returns to the lanes for the 2015-16 season, looking to claim its second straight NCAA Championship, and third title in four years. The Cornhuskers, who have competed in an unprecedented three straight national championship matches, return seven bowlers from last year’s squad, and are hungry for a repeat. Legendary coach Bill Straub returns to Lincoln for his 19th year as the head of the program. He plans to lead Nebraska to a 13th consecutive NCAA Tournament Appearance in the 13th year of the NCAA sanctioning the sport. Prior to NCAA competition, Straub led the Huskers to five national championships, in addition to five NCAA titles since 2004. His longtime assistant, Paul Klempa, is also back for another year in a prominent coaching role. Gone is graduated senior Liz Kuhlkin, the 2015 NTCA Bowler of the Year and Nebraska’s Female Athlete of the Year, who finished her career last season. Her career average of 210.9 ranks second in Nebraska history. Also graduated is Andrea Ruiz, who wrapped up a successful Husker career a season ago. Although the losses hurt, the cupboard is certainly not bare. The Cornhuskers will be led by returners Gazmine Mason and Julia Bond. Mason, a junior from Cranston, R.I., was named a third-team All-American in 2015. Her game average last year was a sizzling 207.8, second on the team. Bond, a sophomore from Aurora, Ill., was named the Most Outstanding Bowler at the 2015 NCAA Tournament. She was also a third-team NTCA All-American. Bond ranked third on the team in game average at

206.5. “They, along with Melanie Crawford, are likely to be our stars this year,” Straub said. “The three of them are experienced and real talented.” NU has two seniors on the roster in Crawford and Bethany Hedley. Crawford, who hails from Allen, Texas, transferred from Stephen F. Austin prior to last season, and finished fourth on the team in average, at 203.2. Hedley, from Watford, England, played a key relief role for the Huskers in 2014-15, including a 188 average during the NCAA Tournament to help the Big Red. Junior Briana Zabierek returns, and will provide leadership to the young Huskers. Straub calls her the “leader” and “captain” of the team, and she contributed a 195.5 pinfall average in 2014-15. Zabierek and Hedley will look to round out Nebraska’s five-bowler rotation. “It won’t work if there’s just three stars, the other two have to be OK,” Straub said.

“We’re looking to find those two people who are OK. Beth Hedley is likely to be at least in strong contention for one of those spots because of all the experience she’s had. The idea being that if you can be pretty mature, you’ve been down that path before, I place a lot of value in that. The other one is Briana Zabierek, who’s going to be in a similar situation; she’s a year behind Beth, but also has a lot of experience.” Alexandra Mosquera, a junior, and Kelly Belzeski, a sophomore, round out the returning Huskers. Joining the program are four freshmen. Kelly Huddleston, Julie Lohman, Allison Morris, and Meghan Straub will look to compete for roster spots right away. The Huskers will begin their season in mid-October at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Bowling Invitational in Kenner, La., before returning to the familiar early season Crusader Classic in November. The Huskers have finished in the top three for

five consecutive years at the tournament held in Valparaiso, Ind. The Huskers will then return home for the annual Big Red Invitational, held at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. The tournament will take place Nov. 12-14. The final tournament of the 2015 calendar year will be the Track Kat Klash in Houston, Texas. The Huskers won the tournament a year ago, hosted by 2014 NCAA champion Sam Houston State. After returning from winter break, the Huskers will head to Jonesboro, Ark., for the Mid-Winter Invitational, hosted by rival Arkansas State. Two straight trips to Texas will follow, first at the Prairie View A&M Invitational, where the Huskers will be looking to claim their fourth straight PVAMU title. The Big Red will then compete at the SFA Stormin’ Ladyjack Classic the following week, hosted by 2015 NCAA runner-up Stephen F. Austin. The Central Missouri Invitational, a mainstay on Nebraska’s schedule for years, will not be held this season, and Nebraska will replace it with a trip to the Warhawk Invitational in Kenosha, Wis. “One of the things that we’re always earmarked to go to is the event in Kansas City (the Central Missouri Invitational),” Straub said. “It’s three hours down the street. It’s easy to get to, we have a history of

success there. Well, it’s sponsored by Central Missouri, and through some circumstances beyond their coach’s control, they had to cancel the event. That’s why we’re going to Wisconsin this year instead of going to Kansas City.” The Huskers will wrap up the regular season by competing at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. Mason won the individual portion of the loaded tournament last season for NU, contributing a staggering 230.6 average. The NCAA Tournament will be held April 14-16 in North Brunswick, N.J., where the Huskers will look to claim their sixth NCAA title. Coach Straub anticipates some competition from a pair of former ex-Huskers who now coach at rival schools. “There’s a couple of schools in our general area that hired people who went through the program here. Arkansas State’s coach (Justin Kostick) was a player here, he had some recruiting go real well this year, and he’s going to be a force. McKendree University, their assistant coach (Bryan O’Keefe) went through the program here. He’s done a really good job of recruiting. We think, within reason, if we can succeed against those two schools, we should also have a pretty good year. That’s a pretty good sized if, but we’re looking forward to it.”

Bill Straub has been the head coach for the Nebraska women’s bowling team since it became a varsity program at NU in 1996. However, his dedication and commitment to Nebraska bowling runs much deeper, as he coached both the men’s and women’s teams for 20 years dating back to when both programs were club sports. Under his tenure, the Husker men’s and women’s teams have combined for 12 national titles in the past 22 years. The Nebraska women’s bowling program won national championships in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015, while the men’s program captured national titles in 1990 and 1996. Most recently, Straub guided the Huskers to the 2015 NCAA championship which was played in front of an ESPN nationally televised audience. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin 4-2 at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, behind strong efforts by MVP Julia Bond and NTCA Bowler of the Year Lizabeth Kuhlkin.

19TH YEAR

KENSINGTON

The 2003-04 season was a huge success for Straub and his Huskers, as they competed at the NCAA level for the first time in school history. Nebraska capped the season by winning the first-ever NCAA championship, rallying through the loser’s bracket to defeat Central Missouri State in the nationally televised final. Shannon Pluhowsky was named the MVP of the NCAA Championships. Straub then guided the Huskers to a second NCAA title in 2005, while Amanda Burgoyne was named the NCAA MVP. Straub and his team captured the 2009 NCAA title as Husker Cassandra Leuthold earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament. He led the Huskers to the 2013 NCAA Championship, using a great all-around effort led by MVP Kuhlkin to defeat Vanderbilt 4.5 to 2.5. Straub has coached seven bowlers who have been named the National Tenpin Coaches Association Collegiate Bowler of the Year, including Kim (Berke) Straub (1992), Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty (2000), Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Burgoyne (2007), Leuthold (2010) and most recently Kuhlkin (2015).

Straub has also coached four bowlers to NTCA Rookie-of-the-Year honors, including Berke, Pluhowsky, Baker and Leuthold. Along with winning 10 national titles, Straub’s women’s squads have never been ranked lower than seventh in the top 25 team rankings since becoming a varsity sport in 1997. Straub’s bowling history goes far beyond the University of Nebraska. A Lincoln native, Straub had an illustrious professional career, both locally and nationally. A member of the Nebraska Hall of Fame, Omaha Hall of Fame and the Lincoln Hall of Fame, Straub has gained more honors and titles than any other bowler from the state of Nebraska. His numerous local, state and national titles give proof that his success as a bowler and coach are mirrored by the success of his bowlers. Straub graduated from Kensington University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He and his wife Kim, a former four-time All-American and National Player of the Year, have one daughter, current Husker bowler Meghan.

Bill Straub is a two-time NTCA Coach of the Year, and has coached seven NTCA bowlers of the year while winning a total of 12 national titles.

Week after week, it is taxing.” “I think Coach grew more by having more responsibility. He not only had his own duties, he had most of mine to boot. MELANIE CRAWFORD SENIOR

PLANO, TEXAS

ALLEN/STEPHEN F. AUSTIN

Melanie Crawford returns for her second year in the Nebraska bowling program following a strong junior season. The transfer from Stephen F. Austin is in the running for a top-three roster spot for the Cornhuskers and looks to provide leadership as one of two seniors on the team.

2014-15 (JUNIOR)

HONORS & AWARDS

• NTCA All-American (Third Team, 2014) • Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2014) • Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2015)

2015-16 (OUTLOOK)

“Melanie’s got a ton of ability. She’s got an opportunity to be an All-American. She had a really good end of the season. When it got to TV (in the NCAA Championship match), she did excellent. I think that the future’s very bright for her.” - Coach Bill Straub

Crawford settled in nicely with the Husker women’s bowling team in 2014-15, as she was used primarily as the second bowler in the fivewoman-rotation in Baker format play. An AllAmerican in 2014 at Stephen F. Austin, Crawford played a significant role in defeating the Lady Jacks in the NCAA Championship. The Allen, Texas, native had an incredible run at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis for the Huskers, as Crawford complied a 212 average throughout the three-day competition. Crawford hit several timely strikes and spares in the championship match to give NU the victory. Crawford was at her best at the Central Missouri Women’s Invitational in Kansas City, as she rolled the Huskers’ only perfect 300 game of the season during the second day of competition. Crawford compiled a season pinfall average of 203.2 in 44 games. She was named to the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll in the fall, and at season’s end Crawford was chosen for the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her outstanding work in the community.

BEFORE NEBRASKA (STEPHEN F. AUSTIN/ALLEN HS)

Crawford joined the Nebraska bowling program after spending her first two collegiate seasons at Stephen F. Austin University. A thirdteam NTCA All-American in 2014, Crawford was a two-time letterwinner at SFA. She was a four-year member of the Allen High School bowling team in Plano, Texas. She produced a 224 average as a senior in 201112 - the highest average of any high school bowler in Texas. Crawford led Allen to a state championship in 2009 and a runner-up finish in 2010. In 2012, she recorded the highest game, series and average in Texas. Crawford was named to the state regional team and competed at the USBC Junior Gold for four years. She also placed in the top 16 at the Junior Gold Championships

• NTCA Scholastic All-American (2013) • NTCA Scholastic All-American (HM, 2015) • Academic All-Big Ten (2014, 2015) • Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2012, 2013, 2014; Spring 2013, 2014) • Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2014, 2015) • Junior Team England Member (2011, 2012, 2013)

2015-16 (OUTLOOK)

“Beth Hedley is our Englander, and she’s left-handed. There’s an advantage in bowling in general, but especially in college bowling in being left-handed. It helps in some sports to be left-handed, i.e., pitching a baseball and serving a tennis ball to name two. Having a lefty with a high skill level like Beth helps take advantage of her competition. Hopefully she can have a great year.” - Coach Bill Straub

Hedley helped lead the Huskers to a secondplace finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships during her sophomore campaign. She recorded a solid 205 to help the Huskers defeat Central Missouri in game two of the NCAA Tournament. She led the Huskers to a team title at the Central Missouri Women’s Invitational by finishing eighth in the individual standings with a 209.4 average, including a high game of 235. Hedley helped the team catch fire early in the season at the Big Red Invitational. She recorded a strike in the second game of the tournament that helped earn a victory over eventual NCAA champion Sam Houston State. She also notched a pair of strikes in the Huskers’ first game against Arkansas State. Her efforts pushed the Huskers to a team title in front of the home crowd at Sun Valley Lanes Hedley also drove the team to a fifth-place finish among 29 teams at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. She finished 25th in the individual standings and recorded a 197.5 average with a high game of 235. She fueled the Huskers to a 20-5 record for the weekend. A standout off the lanes as well, Hedley earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was named to the inaugural Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, which honors student-athletes for their outstanding commitment to community service.

2012-13 (FRESHMAN)

After having success internationally for Team England as a youth, Hedley did not miss a step while making the transition to collegiate bowling for the Huskers in 2012-13.

A mainstay in the starting lineup for Nebraska throughout the season, Hedley produced a 190.6 average as a freshman while helping the Huskers capture the 2013 NCAA championship. Hedley’s best performances came early in the campaign at NU’s first two tournaments. She bowled her way to a 202.2 game average, including a high score of 235 at the Crusader Classic, before adding a 201.8 average at the Track Kat Klash. A standout in the classroom, Hedley claimed NTCA Scholastic All-America accolades in 2013, and earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2012-13.

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Hedley came to Nebraska after competing internationally since the age of 13. She was a member of Team England and competed at the World Youth Championships in Thailand in the summer of 2012. She captured several championships while competing in youth tournaments on the international stage.

HUSKERS CAPTURE 2015 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP In a dominant year for the Nebraska women’s bowling team, the Cornhuskers won the 10th national championship in program history in 2015, defeating Stephen F. Austin, 4-2, in the national championship match. The title was the Huskers’ fifth since the NCAA recognized bowling as a sanctioned sport in 2004. The championship was NU’s second in three years, after winning in 2013 and finishing as runnerup in 2014. The program has finished first or second in seven of the 12 NCAA-sponsored women’s bowling championships. Coach Bill Straub, healthy after battling medical issues during the 2013-14 season, returned for his 18th season at the helm of the Huskers. The two-time NTCA Coach of the Year led the program to a unanimous No. 1 final season ranking, ending the year with a record of 85-20 and seven tournament victories. “We had the best team from day one,” Straub said. “We did a pretty dominating performance everywhere we went. It was just one of those deals where we got to the national championship, the team had plenty of experience, and we just had a pretty easy go of it.” Nebraska was led by the 2015 National Tenpin Coaches Association Bowler of the Year, Liz Kuhlkin. The senior from Schenectady, N.Y., finished her illustrious Husker career as a three-time first-team All-American. Her sizzling 219 average led the NCAA, and her 21.5 Baker game frame average ranked second in the nation. She contributed two tournament victories, six top-five finishes, and seven top10 finishes for NU. Kuhlkin finished the season with a staggering 90.4 percent strike or spare

rate. She earned the Nebraska Female Athlete of the Year Award in 2015, presented to NU’s top women’s athlete across all sports. “(Kuhlkin) just worked her tail off,” Straub said. “She’s a real diligent worker with a lot of natural ability, those two together can make you a star no matter what sport you play.” Also leading the Huskers was Julia Bond, who was a third-team All-American. The freshman from Aurora, Ill., was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Bowler and contributed a steady season average of 206.5. She also contributed a tournament victory for NU, the Mid-Winter Classic in January. Bond was joined as an All-American by Gazmine Mason, who was a third-team selection. The sophomore from Cranston, R.I., had a 207.8 average, and won the 23-team Music City Classic in March. She also averaged a strong 206.9 pinfall per game in the NCAA Tournament. “They did not have bad events,” Straub said of Bond and Mason. “What happens when you’re not at your high level? Are you now a negative? Or are you still OK? Well, those two did not have a big dropoff, and I think that helped the consistency a lot.” Senior Andrea Ruiz finished her Husker career with her second national championship, and was a consistent contributor to the program throughout her career. Ruiz, from Bogota, Colombia, finished the season with an admirable 200.2 game average. The Huskers opened the season on a high note, winning the Crusader Classic in November. Nebraska defeated Arkansas State by a score of 4-1 in the championship match.

NU also defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater (4-3) and Elmhurst (4-1) in the tournament. Kuhlkin won the individual competition, bowling a 212.6 average, with a high score of 240. The Huskers were also led by Ruiz, who placed eighth in the individual portion, rolling a 196.1 average, including a high score of 217. Nebraska continued its winning ways during day one of the Big Red Invitational in Lincoln. The Huskers finished first out of seven teams, with a total pinfall of 4,141. NU defeated Valparaiso (4-1), Wisconsin-Whitewater (5-0), and McKendree University (3-2) before falling to Arkansas State by a score of 4-1 to close out the day. On the second day of competition, Nebraska again held on to the top spot, finishing with a total pinfall of 6,401. Bond led the individual competition with a 223.8 game average. Bond was joined in the top 10 by Kuhlkin, who finished third with a 215.8 average, and Mason, who tied for sixth with a 210.1 average. A fourth-place finish on the final day of play still could not hold back the Huskers, who won the overall competition over the three days with a 14,592 pinfall, edging out Central Missouri (14,120). Kuhlkin finished the tournament in second place and was named to the all-tournament team with a 222.5 average for the weekend. A rough finish at the Mid-Winter Classic in January contributed to a third-place result in Jonesboro, Ark. The Huskers led the 15-team tournament by 450 pins entering the final day, but losses to Maryland-Eastern Shore (4-1) and tournament hosts Arkansas State (4-3) spelled defeat for NU. Bond won the individual competition with a 223.4 average and Kuhlkin finished second with a 219.8 average. Both were named to the all-tournament team. A return to Texas was all the Huskers needed to get back to their winning ways, placing first in the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, Texas, NU’s third straight PVAMU Invitational Crown. In a best-of-seven Baker format championship match, Nebraska defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, to win the title. Nebraska also defeated Arkansas State, 4-0, in tournament play. Mason led the Huskers with a 12th-place finish in the individual competition, bowling a 218.5 average. Ruiz finished 16th with a 215.6 average. The Huskers finished second at the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Classic. Nebraska led throughout the tournament before a championship match defeat at the hands of LIU-Brooklyn. NU defeated the hosts Stephen F. Austin in tournament play by a score of 4-3 in a precursor to the eventual NCAA Championship match. Kuhlkin finished 10th overall in the individual competition, ending the weekend with a 213 average. NU won the Central Missouri Women’s Invitational in early March, with the Huskers going 11-1 during the weekend in Kansas City, Kan. Nebraska had a 12,746 total pinfall, running away with the championship. Kuhlkin and Mason led the Huskers, finishing first and fifth overall respectively. Junior Melanie Crawford had a headlining performance on Day 2 of the event, rolling a perfect 300 game. “It was by far the most unforgettable moment of my collegiate career, especially to turn around and have all nine of my other teammates right behind me during every shot,” Crawford said. “After the last ball, they all came up and hugged me on the approach. Definitely something I will never forget.” The final regular-season tournament of the year was the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn. Because of weather-related delays getting some teams to the tournament, no official team champion was named. The Huskers put together a strong performance, finishing with an 11-3 match play record, including 4-0 and a first-place showing on the final day of competition. Nebraska was led by Mason, who was named MVP of the tournament, finishing first in the individual standings after rolling a 230 game average. Kuhlkin finished 12th overall, bowling a 213 average, and Ruiz contributed a 195 average to lead NU. The season culminated with the championship performance at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo., in the NCAA Tournament in front of a nationally televised audience on ESPNU. In game one of the championship match, the Huskers opened up in exciting fashion against Stephen F. Austin, as NU used clutch strikes by Bond and Ruiz to narrowly beat SFA 237-232. A late rally in game two by the Huskers was not enough, as Stephen F. Austin threw seven consecutive strikes to defeat NU 253-178. The Huskers quickly got game two out of their minds, as the Big Red opened up game three on fire with three strikes and two spares,

giving NU a 13-pin lead after five frames. Mason continued her dominating ways in the sixth frame, throwing her fourth-straight strike to build on the Husker lead. Crawford threw a clutch spare in the seventh frame, after only knocking six pins down in her first attempt. Ruiz threw her fourth strike of the night in the eighth frame, giving the Huskers some cushion before their 4-5 bowlers. Bond threw a strike and Kuhlkin was able to close the game out with a spare, as the Huskers crushed the Ladyjacks 201-171. Nebraska continued its dominating play in game four, as the Huskers opened the game with two strikes and a spare to grab the early lead. After two spares from Bond and Kuhlkin, NU took an 11-pin lead to the media timeout, entering the sixth frame. Despite the early lead, the Huskers were unable to hold on, as SFA edged out NU 188-179 to even the match up 2-2. Entering game five, the Huskers and the Ladyjacks began a best-of-three series for the NCAA title. Nebraska started off game five with an open frame, leaving two pins up giving Stephen F. Austin an early lead. The Huskers continued to battle, as NU only trailed by 10 pins entering the sixth frame. Mason again threw an impressive strike to open up the sixth frame of game five, as the Huskers continued to try and battle back against the Ladyjacks. Ruiz again threw a clutch strike in the eighth frame, giving the Huskers the lead back. NU was able to close out SFA after clutch shots from both Bond and Kuhlkin, as the Huskers took game five 205-201. Game six brought the best out of both Nebraska and Stephen F. Austin, as the Huskers tried to close out SFA to win the title. After a clutch strike from Crawford, the Huskers trailed the Ladyjacks by four entering the sixth frame and media timeout. After an open frame in the seventh, Ruiz hit a huge strike to give the Huskers the chance to control thier own destiny. Both Bond and Kuhlkin were able to close the match out, as Kuhlkin threw the final spare to give Nebraska the match win 4-2.

Liz Kuhlkin capped her remarkable Husker career by being named NTCA Bowler of the Year in 2015.

NEBRASKA BOWLING HISTORY

In 19 years as a varsity sport, Nebraska bowling has become one of the top programs in the nation. Head Coach Bill Straub has guided the Huskers to unprecedented success, winning national titles in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015. Once bowling became an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 2003, the Huskers won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 and captured two more in 2009 and 2013. The Huskers added to their trophy case in 2015, bringing home the national championship, giving the program a nation-leading five NCAA titles. With 90 tournament titles in 177 all-time competitions after the 2014-15 campaign including national championship tournaments, Straub has created a dynamic foundation for success for Nebraska bowling. With a world-wide approach to recruiting, Nebraska bowlers have been well-represented in national and international competitions. Under Straub, 12 Husker bowlers have qualified for their national teams, including U.S. National Team members Shannon Pluhowsky, Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty, Brenda Edwards, Elise Bolton and most-recently Lizabeth Kuhlkin. Recent Huskers Danielle van der Meer (Netherlands), Valerie Calberry (Canada), Shalima Zalsha (Indonesia), Tan Yan Ling (Singapore) and Andrea Ruiz (Colombia) and current Huskers Bethany Hedley (England) and Alexandra Mosquera (Colombia) have also represented their home countries on the international level. While the Husker team accomplishments have been paramount, numerous bowlers have also enjoyed individual success. NU has had at least one All-American in each of the last 23 years, dating back to the bowling club program days. Since 1989, 27 Huskers have combined for a total of 58

first-, second- and third-team All-America awards, while Kim Berke (1992), Diandra Hyman (2000), Shannon Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Amanda Burgoyne (2007), Cassandra Leuthold (2010) and Kuhlkin (2015) were each chosen as the National College Bowler of the Year. Straub has been a visionary in the sport of college bowling, championing the sport through its club program days and was a natural to become Nebraska’s first varsity head coach in 1997. The first year was historic in several respects, but most important was granting of the first full scholarship in the sport’s history to Jennifer Daugherty, who went on to earn first-team All-America honors in both 1998 and 1999. College bowling has experienced rapid growth in recent seasons, tripling to more than 60 schools in the last five years. In 2002, the NCAA announced that bowling would become an NCAA-sanctioned sport, and legislation was approved on April 24, 2003, allowing for the first NCAA Championship in the spring of 2004. Since the NCAA Championship was initiated, NU has captured the title five times in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015, giving NU 10 national crowns in the sport. Most recently, the Nebraska bowling team was crowned the 2015 NCAA champions at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin, 4-2, for the crown, as freshman Julia Bond led the way to earn Most Outstanding Bowler at the tournament. Three Huskers earned National Tenpin Coaches Association All-America honors in 2015, including first-team selection Kuhlkin and third-team choices Bond and Gazmine Mason.

“The University of Nebraska is where I feel I really learned how to bowl. I also learned a lot about who I was as a person. Anytime you go outside your comfort zone and you leave home for the first time, you are forced to learn about the real world quickly. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had at UNL and so fortunate to have had the best coaches in the world at my disposal. The bottom line is that I didn’t go to school to bowl, but for a great education. I got both.” Diandra Hyman Asbaty, NTCA Bowler of the Year (2000) Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year (2002) The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs for student-athletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska. Construction was completed in the fall of 2010 on the Nebraska Student Life Complex, which nearly tripled the size of NU’s previous academic space. The Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex also features a new technology center and a dedicated Life Skills area and the Papik Computer lab (left).

STUDENT-ATHLETE LIFE Nebraska Athletics is one of the few self-sustaining intercollegiate athletic programs in the country. In the 2014-15 fiscal year, Nebraska drew more than 1.3 million fans across all sports through the gates of our world-class facilities. This incredible interest and support enables Nebraska Athletics to invest in the student-athlete experience, as well as the overall game-day experience. Nebraska is a leader in providing all the resources and support necessary for student-athletes to become successful in Academics, Athletics and Life. Nebraska will continue to strategically plan for avenues to strengthen the resources to support more than 600 Husker student-athletes.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing first-class benefits and support to our student-athletes. This change in governance, and subsequent legislation, has paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for our student-athletes even further. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: · All scholarship student-athletes across all sports will have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. · Each student-athlete will receive an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities (pictured top left). · Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table). · Nebraska created the first-known post-eligibility benefit program, where every student-athlete, who has graduated and exhausted their athletic eligibility, will have the opportunity to pursue an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school with Nebraska’s support.

RED CARPET EXPERIENCE

Lizabeth Kuhlkin captured National Tenpin Coaches Association Bowler-of-the-Year honors while leading Nebraska to the NCAA championship. Following her magical 2015 season, Kuhlkin was named Nebraska’s first-ever Female Athlete of the Year across all sports.

The meetings help each studentathlete identify a career focus and implement a plan to increase career marketability.

CAREER COMMITMENT

Annually, Nebraska Life Skills organizes a StudentAthlete Career Fair, Networking Night and other career events aimed at connecting Huskers with companies desiring competitive, hard-working, accountable candidates. Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career opportunities across the country.
