A Tradition of Success

Coach Robin Krapfl continues to emphasize the principles of achieving excellence on and off the course in her 30th season as Nebraska's head coach. It shows. Since Krapfl took the reins in 1987, the Huskers have: Earned a nation-leading 69 WGCA Scholastic All-America honors. In 1992, all five of Krapfl’s starters were honored with this distinction. It was the first time in women’s college golf history that a team had accomplished such a feat. Again in 2003, five Nebraska starters earned Scholastic All-America honors. Won 118 academic all-conference awards. Produced two NCAA All-Americans, two conference champions, the 1990 Edith Munson Award winner, a twotime TrueTemper Scholastic Award honoree, one Big 12 Golfer of the Year, one Nebraska Student-Athlete-of-theYear and 23 all-conference (16 Big Eight, 6 All-Big 12, 1 All-Big Ten) awards. Qualified for 11 NCAA Regionals. Participated in the first three NCAA Tournaments in school history with trips in 2000, 2003 and 2006. Posted a team GPA of 3.71 in 2006-07, the fifth-highest team GPA in the nation.

Huskers Aim for 12th NCAA Regional

In their first season of Big Ten Conference competition in 2011-12, the Huskers just missed an NCAA Regional berth while finishing sixth at the Big Ten Tournament. Madeleine Sheils earned All-Big Ten honors while tying for third at the Big Ten Championships. She also earned a spot in the NCAA Central Regional as an individual. Nebraska had its streak of three consecutive NCAA Regional bids end in 2009, but the Huskers will focus on earning their 12th regional bid since 1994 in 2016-17. NU advanced to its third consecutive regional in 2008, qualifying as the No. 17 seed in the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas. The Huskers missed a berth to their fourth NCAA Championships by just one stroke, finishing in a tie for 10th with a score of 903 on the University of Texas Golf Course. NU qualified for regionals on the heels of a solid sixthplace finish at the Big 12 Championships in Stillwater, Okla. Along with their strong play on the course, all five starters in Nebraska’s lineup earned academic All-Big 12 recognition. In 2007, NU earned a second straight NCAA Regional bid with a fourth-place Big 12 finish. NU claimed three team tournament titles, led by All-Big 12 performer Elli Brown. NU also led the conference with five academic All-Big 12 selections. The Huskers produced one of the best seasons in school history in 2006, with a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Nebraska also posted its

best-ever score at the NCAA Championships by firing a 1,221 over four rounds, 18 strokes better than the 1,239 NU shot at the 2000 NCAA Championships. The final-round 299 was NU’s best NCAA Championships mark in history. The 2006 Huskers finished eighth at the NCAA Central Regional after entering as the No. 15 seed in the 21-team field. The Huskers also tied for fourth at the Big 12 Championships at the Country Club of Lincoln. NU also produced the thenbest team stroke average in school history (304.88). Stephanie Ruiz earned second-team All-Big 12 honors and finished in a tie for 38th at the 2006 NCAA Championships. In 2003, the Huskers played host to the NCAA Central Regional, held at Lincoln's Firethorn Golf Club. Nebraska was ranked 19th going into the tournament, but ascended to fifth place to qualify for the NCAA Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskers closed the season strong by finishing 22nd at the NCAA Championships. NU finished with a four-round total of 1,281 led by Sarah Sasse’s 40thplace showing. Krapfl, a native of West Point, Neb., has been associated with the Husker program since 1979 when she played collegiate golf for Nebraska (1979-82). A three-year letterwinner, she graduated from Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1984. Krapfl went on to become a PGA Professional at The Country Club of Lincoln, where she worked as an assistant under head professional and former Husker coach Jerry Fisher. Krapfl also worked under Fisher as an assistant for the Huskers from 1984 to 1987. As head coach, Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 30 tournament titles. She is only the third coach in Nebraska women's golf history, following former men's coach Larry Romjue and Fisher. She is married to Richard Krapfl and the couple has two sons, Robert and Ryan.

Hank M. University Bounds, Ph.D Board of Regents University of Nebraska President Second Year Southern Mississippi (1991) On Jan. 12, 2015, the Board of Regents appointed lifelong educator Hank M. Bounds, Ph.D., as the seventh president of the University of Nebraska. Bounds began his tenure as president on April 13, 2015, bringing with him a demonstrated record of expanding opportunities for students, improving higher education outcomes and efficiencies and building successful partnerships with policymakers, donors and business leaders. Bounds grew up on a small farm in rural Mississippi, where his family raised hogs and cattle and he hauled hay. His service in the Army National Guard helped him pay for college, and he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi. Bounds has devoted his 25-year career to helping change students’ lives in the same way education opened doors in his own life. He began as a high school teacher, then rose to principal, superintendent and state superintendent before becoming Mississippi’s commissioner of higher education in 2009. In that role, he oversaw a complex system of eight public universities including research universities, regional universities, an academic health science center, historically black institutions, a law center, a school of veterinary medicine and 200 institutes and centers. Together the system enrolled 85,000 students, employed 26,000 faculty and staff, and operated with a combined annual budget of $4.5 billion, including $500 million in research and development. During every year of Bounds’ tenure as commissioner, student enrollment and degrees awarded by the institutions in the Mississippi system increased, by a total of 13.3 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. He advocated with legislative leadership for improved faculty compensation and providing greater opportunities for students. He also provided oversight for private fundraising in excess of $250 million per year. Bounds worked with the Board of Trustees to implement a performance-based allocation model that distributed funds equitably and rewarded universities for operating efficiently and achieving attainment outcomes. He designed an efficiencies plan that saved more than $90 million, an internal audit function, and a comprehensive diversity initiative that led to increased diversity among Mississippi faculty, staff and students. Bounds also worked with partners to increase educational attainment in Mississippi, including a Center for Education Innovation focused on improving learning opportunities for disadvantaged children. Bounds created an office to foster relationships among university researchers, business and industry, and economic developers. He was tapped by the business community to chair a major statewide initiative to create an action plan to improve Mississippi’s competitive position. Bounds brings this experience to the University of Nebraska, which he believes can serve as a catalyst for change and growth in the lives of students and people in the state and around the world. He is working to make the University of Nebraska a giant in higher education—for the benefit of the state, the country and the world. Bounds holds faculty appointments in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and in the Colleges of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He and his wife, Susie, are the parents of a son, Will, and a daughter, Caroline. They reside in Lincoln, Neb.

The Board of Regents consists of eight voting members elected by district for six-year terms, and four non-voting student Regents, one from each campus, who serve during their tenure as student body president. The board supervises the general operations of the university, and the control and direction of all expenditures. The board also includes a corporation secretary who manages all records including agendas, minutes, notices, policies and bylaws. Those documents can be found on the web at nebraska.edu/board/. The board meets regularly, primarily in Lincoln but also in Omaha and greater Nebraska. Persons wishing to provide information to the board or to appear before it should contact: Corporation Secretary, University of Nebraska, Varner Hall, 3835 Holdrege, Lincoln, NE 68583.

2016-17 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S GOLF

Young Huskers Hit Course for 2016-17

Freshman Kate Smith could be a leader for an extremely young Nebraska women’s golf team in 2016-17. Smith is the only five-time Minnesota high school state champion in history. Nebraska will bring a new look to the links in 2016-17, as a young and talented roster takes to the course under the direction of Coach Robin Krapfl. Krapfl, who is entering her 30th season at the controls of the Husker program, will lead one of her youngest teams in recent memory after losing a trio of solid seniors to graduation. The Huskers not only must replace three of their top golfers in seniors Morgan Smejkal, Cassidy Stelzmiller and Cassie Deeg, they also will have to overcome the loss of their top 2016 freshman, Haley Thiele. The young star from Wahoo, Neb., shattered the Nebraska freshman record by producing a 75.63 stroke average while playing all 32 rounds for the Huskers a year ago. She was also Nebraska’s No. 2 finisher at the Big Ten Championships, tying for 39th with a three-round score of 222 (75-73-74) at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis. Thiele is expected to redshirt as a sophomore while recovering from a wrist injury. In addition to a record-setting stroke average as a freshman, Thiele showed the ability to go low by tying a Husker freshman record with a five-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. She went on to match first-team All-American Sarah Sasse’s schoolrecord three-round tournament score of 209 in Las Vegas. “Haley showed her outstanding potential last year, but we all feel like she has a lot of great golf ahead of her,” Krapfl said. “Her injury kept her off the course the entire summer, and she has a good plan in place for a complete recovery. We know it is the best thing for her future as a golfer and for our program, but we will certainly miss her on the course with us this season.” In addition to losing Thiele’s scores, the Huskers also will have to replace her leadership. Coming into this season, Krapfl was expecting Thiele to help bridge the gap between Nebraska’s 2016 senior trio and the 2017 freshmen. “Last season, our leadership was in place with our seniors, so Haley didn’t really need to provide us with a lot in that area. However, we know she is more than capable. She is an outstanding student, a solid citizen and a really good teammate.” With Thiele out of the lineup, Nebraska will rely heavily on senior Sarah Pravecek and juniors Audrey Judd and Emily

Gillman to fill major roles both on the course and in team leadership to help the Husker freshmen. Pravecek, a senior from Omaha, has the experience of being in the Husker lineup at the past two Big Ten Championships. Pravecek has played 51 career rounds for the Huskers over the past three seasons and is looking to become a fixture in the lineup in her final season in Lincoln. Off the course, Pravecek is a two-time academic All-Big Ten selection and was a member of the 2016 Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her commitment to Nebraska’s community outreach and leadership efforts. “We are looking forward to Sarah having her best season as a Husker,” Krapfl said. “We will need her to be a leader for us on and off the course since we have such a young team.” The Huskers return more experience with Judd. The junior from Olathe, Kan., has been a regular in the Nebraska lineup throughout her first two seasons in Lincoln. Last season, Judd competed in all 32 rounds in the Husker lineup and finished with a 78.16 stroke average. “Audrey has a lot of talent, and we think we can help her become a really good player,” Krapfl said. “She works hard at her game, and she really wants to help us improve as a team as she improves as a player.” Judd also has demonstrated her leadership potential as a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, while also earning academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore in 2016. Gillman, a junior from Austin, Texas, competed in 12 rounds for the Huskers as a sophomore in 2015-16, before focusing on making adjustments to her game. Off the course, Gillman was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and earned academic All-Big Ten accolades before being named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. “Emily has grown a lot as a golfer and a person in her first two years in our program, and we are looking forward to seeing that growth continue,” Krapfl said. “Emily is a terrific person, and she is focused on helping our team improve on and off the course.” In addition to the four returning golfers on the roster, the Huskers will feature four freshmen in 2016-17. Kate Smith certainly has the potential to make an immediate impact on the Nebraska lineup. The freshman from Detroit Lakes, Minn., is the only five-time individual state

champion in Minnesota high school history. She capped her career by claiming a share of her record fifth title on June 15, while leading Detroit Lakes High School to its fourth state team championship in the past five years. The winner of the 2016 Minnesota Ms. Golf Award, Smith set three course records as a senior, including a 64 at The Vintage Course. As a junior, she produced a stellar 70.37 stroke average. “We are very excited to have Kate join our program. She has the innate ability to get the ball in the hole and does not back away from competition,” Krapfl said. “She possesses excellent short-game skills, knows how to win, and has a great work ethic both on and off the course. We’ve had some excellent Minnesotans represent our program. Kate has the potential to be the best of all of them.” Another candidate to make an immediate impression for the Huskers is Claire Robertson. The first Husker women’s golfer from Scotland, Robertson was a member of Team Scotland at the Scottish Girls Under 16 Strokeplay Championships in both 2013 and 2014. “The thing that stands out the most in watching Claire compete is her ability to battle the whole round, whether things are going her way or not,” Krapfl said. “Claire brings experience competing internationally against the top players in Europe, while also representing her country. She has a wellrounded game, knows how to play in the wind and has shown the ability to shoot low numbers.” Another international golfer, Pasinee “Annie” Sritragul will be a strong contender for the lineup spots for the Big Red. The youngster from Bangkok, Thailand, spent the summers of 2014 and 2015 playing in the United States. In 2015, Sritragul tied for third at the Izod AJGA Girls Championship. Her three-round score of 213 included a sizzling opening-round 66 on Aug. 18 at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. “Annie is a great ball-striker and putter. She hits a lot of fairways and greens giving herself opportunities to make birdies,” Krapfl said. “It is exciting to see where she can take her game after she gets a little stronger and continues to hone her short game, given the fact she has already demonstrated the ability to go low.” Rounding out Nebraska’s newcomers is Jessica Haraden. The freshman from Thousand Oaks, Calif., competed in the

2014 California Interscholastic Federation individual finals while helping Oaks Christian High School to the Maramonte League team title. “Jessica is a talented young golfer who could push for time in our lineup as a freshman,” Krapfl said. “She has played against some quality competition in California, and we are hoping she brings some outstanding leadership qualities to our team.” The Huskers will open their 2016-17 at Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Sept. 12-13. It will mark Nebraska’s first trip to the Ram Classic since the fall of 2005. After competing in the East & West Match Play Challenge at Ann Arbor, Mich., Sept. 18-20, the Huskers will return to Wilderness Ridge Golf Course for the Chip-N Club Invitational, Sept. 25-27. It will be the first time that Nebraska’s annual home tournament will be a three-day event but will be the third time in the last four years that the event has been held at Wilderness Ridge. The Huskers return to Colorado for the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Denver, Oct. 7-9. Nebraska wraps up the fall by competing at the UNLV Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 23-25, in Boulder City, Nev. The spring schedule tees off with the Central District Invitational, Feb. 20-21, 2017, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The following week, Nebraska heads to the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., Feb. 26-27. It marks the sixth consecutive year that the Huskers have competed at Westbrook. The Big Red return to Arizona less than three weeks later to compete in the Clover Cup in Mesa, March 17-19. It will mark the fifth straight season that the Huskers’ have competed in Notre Dame’s annual event in Arizona. The Huskers conclude their regular-season spring schedule by traveling to the Hawkeye El Tigre in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico, April 2-4. Nebraska will journey to the 2017 Big Ten Championships at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville, Ohio, April 21-23. Nebraska will hope to be in position to contend for its 12th NCAA Regional bid since 1994. NCAA Regional competitions will be held in Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State), Lubbock, Texas (Texas Tech), Albuquerque, N.M. (New Mexico) and Greenville, N.C. (East Carolina) May 8-10, before the NCAA Championships are held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., May 18-24. “We’re looking forward to some great competition on great courses this season,” Krapfl said. “We’ve got a nice blend of familiar tournaments and new places to travel, and we’re hoping that all of it helps prepare us well for postseason play.”

Thiele tied the Nebraska freshman record with a fiveunder-par 67 in the opening round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 25. She went on to smash Nebraska’s freshman tournament record, while matching first-team AllAmerican Sarah Sasse’s school-record tournament score of 209 (67-69-73). Thiele finished in a tie for 18th at the tournament, which was loaded with All-Americans and featured 18 of the nation’s top 85 teams. Thiele fired a 214 at the Pinehurst Challenge, Oct. 12-13, which included a four-under-par 68 in the second round. Thiele’s 214 at Pinehurst was the third-best score by a freshman in school history, trailing only her 209 in Las Vegas and a 213 by Kate White at the 2006 Bronco Invitational. Thiele tied for 11th in a 104-player field at Pinehurst. Her performance in North Carolina followed a tie for 17th with a 226 (77-72-77) at Nebraska’s Chip-N Club Invitational at the Country Club of Lincoln, Oct. 5-6. Thiele competed as an individual outside the Husker lineup. Thiele, who finished with four rounds better than par in 2015-16, fired a one-under-par 71 in the second round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational to open her career. She was NU’s No. 2 finisher, tying for 39th (88-71-76-235) to lead the players inside the Husker lineup at Colbert Hills, Sept. 7-8. She contributed a tie for 60th (78-76-81-235) as Nebraska’s No. 4 finisher at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo., Sept. 21-23. She opened the spring by finishing 49th (83-75-158) at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif., Feb. 13-14. Thiele matched Cassie Deeg as NU’s No. 2 finisher at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., Feb. 21-22. Thiele totaled 223 (76-74-73) to tie for 53rd in a talented tournament field. Thiele added a tie for 49th with a 232 (75-82-75) at the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz., March 11-13, before leading the Huskers with a tie for 31st in a strong 97-player field at the Dr.

Donnis Thompson Hawaii Invitational, March 22-23. Thiele’s three-round total of 226 (72-78-76) led the Huskers at the 16-team event. She settled for a tie for 85th (78-79-84-241) in a loaded 18-team field at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif., April 3-5.

High School/Amateur

In the summer of 2015, Thiele captured the Trusted Choice Big “I” National Championship a week after tying for third at the Optimist International Junior Championship. She also tied for fifth at the North & South Junior Amateur. In 2014, Thiele took fourth at the Trusted Choice Big “I” after finishing 12th at the event in 2013. A two-time Nebraska Girls Amateur of the Year (2013, 2014), Thiele claimed back-to-back state Girls Match Play crowns, while adding the 2013 Nebraska Girls Stroke Play title. She also won the 2013 Nebraska Junior PGA Championship. A three-time Nebraska Four-State Team member, Thiele is a three-time Nebraska Class C Boys High School State Golf Tournament top-15 finisher. Bishop Neumann High School in Wahoo, Neb., does not sponsor girls golf, but Thiele helped Bishop Neumann to a Class C state runner-up finish in 2015 by finishing fourth individually (74-73-147) at Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln, just two strokes back of the boys state champion. Thiele tied for 11th at the 2014 Nebraska Class C tournament with a two-round total of 153 (80-73). She tied for 13th at the Class C boys meet as a sophomore with a 36-hole total of 161 (80-81). She finished 35th at the 2012 boys state tournament as a freshman with a 168 (86-82). In the summer of 2014, Thiele qualified for the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship by winning a sectional qualifying tournament at the Elks Country Club in Columbus with a one-under-par 71. She went on to compete at the U.S. Junior Championships in Flagstaff, Ariz. Thiele also qualified to compete at the 2015 Junior PGA Championships. She tied for 59th at the 2014 PGA Junior Championship at Trump National Golf Club in Washington, D.C. Thiele defended her state junior match play title in 2014 with a win over her sister. Thiele settled for second with a loss to her sister in the 2015 final. Thiele also finished second to her sister in the 2014 and 2015 state stroke play events. Thiele was a three-sport high school standout at Bishop Neumann, competing in golf, basketball and volleyball. She drew recruiting interest in all three sports. She was the top female golfer in the state her final three years of high school. In basketball, Thiele was a second-team All-Nebraska pick by the Omaha World-Herald and a third-team Super-State selection by the Lincoln Journal Star in 2014 and 2015. The two-time first-team Class C-1 all-stater averaged 20.6 points per game as a 5-8 senior shooting guard for the Cavaliers. She averaged 20.5 points per game as a junior in 2014. She also played summer club basketball for the Husker Elite and coaches Doug Goltz and her father, Kevin Thiele. As a volleyball player, Thiele was a starting outside hitter. As a junior in 2013, she produced 142 kills and 335 digs, before adding 145 kills and 317 digs as a senior in 2014.

Kate Smith comes to Nebraska as the only five-time individual state champion in Minnesota high school history. Smith capped her high school career by claiming a share of her fifth individual title on June 15 at the Ridges at Sand Creek, while leading Class 2A Detroit Lakes High School to its fourth state team title in the past five years. The winner of the 2016 Minnesota Ms. Golf Award, Smith swept Class 2A state titles for five consecutive seasons dating back to eighth grade at Detroit Lakes. She became the only golfer in Minnesota girls’ history to win five state titles. Smith previously shared the record of four state titles with Katie Detlefson, who went on to win the LPGA Dinah Shore Award as a collegian at Central Florida. Since her seventh grade year, when she won her first all-state award, Smith has slashed more than 10 strokes per round off her season scoring average. “We are very excited to have Kate join our program. She has the innate ability to get the ball in the hole and does not back away from competition,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “She possesses excellent short-game skills, knows how to win, and has a great work ethic both on and off the course. We’ve had some excellent Minnesotans represent our program. Kate has the potential to be the best of all of them.”

High School/Amateur

A five-time Minnesota Class 2AA state champion (2012-16) and a six-time Class 2A all-state selection (2011-16), Smith was the Minnesota Ms. Golf Award winner in 2016. She posted a 70.37 stroke average as a junior in 2015, and set three couse records as a senior, including a 64 on The Vintage Course. In addition to her high school success, Smith was the 2012-13 Minnesota PGA Junior Player of the Year and the 2013 Minnesota Girls State Junior Champion. In the summer

of 2015, she won the PGA Junior Series title at Arbor Links with a three-day career-best score of 209 (74-68-67), which would match the current Nebraska school record held by 2003 first-team All-American Sarah Sasse and Husker Haley Thiele. Smith was also a member of Team Minnesota at the 2015 USGA women’s state championship. Smith continues Nebraska women’s golf’s success in recruiting the state of Minnesota, following former Huskers Cassie Deeg (Hugo, 2013-16), Steffi Neisen (New Prague, 2011-14), Chrissie McArdle (Eden Prairie, 2004-07) and Jackie Beste (Sauk Centre, 2003-06). All were high-level performers for the Huskers on and off the course over the last 15 years.

The daughter of Kris and Margery Smith, Kate was born May 6, 1999, in Hartford, Conn. She has an older brother, Karter. Kate is majoring in art at Nebraska. “I chose Nebraska because of how they care about their student-athletes, the welcoming atmoshpere on campus and the overall tradition surrounding the University.”

She hits a lot of fairways and greens, giving herself opportunities to make birdies,” Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said. “It is exciting to see where she can take her game after she gets a little stronger and continues to hone her short game, given the fact she has already demonstrated the ability to go low.”

18, at the Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C. She added a tie for third (228) at the JoS A. 2016-17 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S GOLF

Big Ten Conference Known as one of intercollegiate sports’ most successful undertakings, the Big Ten is home to a lineage of legendary names and an ongoing tradition of developing strong leaders. Even in its infancy, the conference established itself as the preeminent collection of institutions in the nation, where the pursuit of academic excellence prevailed as the definitive goal. The history of the Big Ten traces back 121 years to the Palmer House hotel in Chicago, where on Jan. 11, 1895, then-Purdue president James H. Smart and leaders from the universities of Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern and Wisconsin set out to organize and develop principles for the regulation of intercollegiate athletics. At that meeting, a blueprint for the administration of college athletics James E. Delany under the direction of appointed faculty representatives was outlined. Commissioner The presidents’ first known action “restricted eligibility for athletics to bonafide, full-time students who were not delinquent in their studies.” That important legislation, along with other legislation that would follow in the coming years, served as the primary building block for intercollegiate athletics. On Feb. 8, 1896, one faculty member from each of those seven universities met at the same Palmer House and officially established the mechanics of the conference, which was officially incorporated as the “Intercollegiate Conference Athletic Association” in 1905. Indiana and Iowa became the eighth and ninth members in 1899. In 1908, Michigan briefly withdrew its membership, and in 1912 Ohio State joined the conference, bringing its membership total back to nine. Upon Michigan’s return in 1917, the conference was first referred to as the “Big Ten” by media members, and that name was eventually incorporated in 1987. As the 1900s opened, faculty representatives established rules for intercollegiate athletics that were novel for the time. As early as 1904, the faculty approved legislation that required eligible athletes to meet entrance requirements and to have completed a full year’s work, along with having one year of residence. In 1901, the first Big Ten Championship event was staged when the outdoor track and field championships were held at the University of Chicago. The debut event marked what is now a staple of conference competition. Today, the Big Ten sponsors 28 official sports, 14 for men and 14 for women, including the addition of men’s ice hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse the last three years. Big Ten schools compete in a total of 42 sports, furthering the conference’s commitment to broad-based programming and providing more participation opportunities than any conference in the country. One of the conference’s proudest traditions began in 1902 when Michigan took on Stanford in the Rose Bowl, the nation’s first bowl game. Big Ten teams only appeared in Pasadena twice before the conference signed an exclusive contract with the Tournament of Roses in 1946, making it the first bowl game with permanent conference affiliations. But Michigan’s appearance in 1902 cultivated a relationship that has endured for more than a century. Coupling the academic goals set forth by the conference leaders and their steadfast commitment to athletics, the conference instituted the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1915. It is awarded annually by each conference institution to a student of the graduating class who has attained the greatest proficiency in scholarship and athletics. It is the most prestigious honor a student competing in Big Ten athletics can receive. In 1922, Major John L. Griffith became the conference’s first “Commissioner of Athletics.” Griffith was the first of five men to assume the role of commissioner in the conference’s history, followed by Kenneth L. “Tug” Wilson in 1945, Bill Reed in 1961, Wayne Duke in 1971 and current commissioner James E. Delany in 1989. After nearly 30 years with 10 members, the conference consolidated to nine schools when Chicago formally withdrew its membership in 1946. Michigan State was added to the Big Ten three years later, bringing the number of affiliated conference schools to 10 once again. In 1955, the Big Ten formulated a revenue-sharing model designed to pool all football

television rights of its members and share those proceeds equally. The conference and its members continue to utilize a revenue-sharing model, dividing media rights, bowl payouts and other profits among all conference institutions. While academics have always played an integral role in the conference, presidents of the Big Ten member institutions formalized the primacy of academics with the establishment of the Big Ten Academic Alliance (formerly the Committee on Institutional Cooperation) in 1958. The Big Ten Academic Alliance is an academic consortium of all Big Ten universities. In 2014, the schools currently constituting the Big Ten Academic Alliance produced over $10 billion in funded research, $5 billion more than any other conference. In one of Duke’s first actions as commissioner, he oversaw the adoption of the Big Ten Advisory Commission in 1972, designed to study conference programs and make suggestions that would further Big Ten objectives. The Advisory Commission enlists former students that competed in Big Ten athletics to serve as liaisons to the NCAA’s Diversity and Inclusion Department, the Big Ten Student-Athlete Advisory Commission and other organizations. In 1981, the conference presidents and chancellors endorsed a proposal that enabled universities to affiliate their women’s intercollegiate programs with the conference, and the first conference championships for women were staged that fall. The Big Ten was the first conference to voluntarily adopt male and female participation goals after launching its Gender Equity Action Plan in 1992. In December of 1989, the conference agreed in principle to invite Penn State for membership. On June 4, 1990, the Council of Presidents officially voted to integrate Penn State into the conference, giving the Big Ten 11 members. On June 11, 2010, the Big Ten Council of Presidents/Chancellors (COP/C) approved a formal membership application by Nebraska, which officially joined the Big Ten Conference on July 1, 2011. The conference expanded to 14 programs when Maryland and Rutgers officially became Big Ten members on July 1, 2014, giving the conference almost 9,500 students participating in intercollegiate athletics and more than 11,000 participation opportunities on 350 teams. On June 3, 2013, the Big Ten announced that Johns Hopkins had been accepted as the conference’s first sport affiliate member. Johns Hopkins’ addition in men’s lacrosse gave the Big Ten six institutions sponsoring the sport, allowing the debut of men’s lacrosse as an official conference sport. On June 17, 2015, the conference announced that Johns Hopkins was accepted as a sport affiliate member for women’s lacrosse beginning in 2016-17. On March 23, 2016, the conference announced that Notre Dame will join the Big Ten for men’s ice hockey beginning in 2017-18. Since opening in the fall of 2013, the Big Ten Conference Center in Rosemont, Ill., has played host to more than 300 meetings annually for member institutions, Big Ten Academic Alliance-related committees and coaching groups. The headquarters also feature an interactive digital museum - the Big Ten Experience - which opened to the public on June 7, 2014. For more information on the Big Ten Experience, visit bigten.org. In June 2014, the Big Ten opened a second office in New York City, featuring both office and meeting space in Midtown Manhattan. Three Big Ten staff members are based in the New York City office to provide expanded coverage and service. The conference manages 28 championships and tournaments, offers legislative and compliance services, oversees the production and distribution of nearly 1,400 events annually, provides staff services to coaching and administrative personnel and services media and fans interest for information on the Big Ten Conference. More than 120 years after its inception, the Big Ten remains a national leader in intercollegiate athletics on and off the field. Big Ten programs have combined to win more than 450 team and 1,800 individual national championships, consistently taking home individual honors for athletic and academic accomplishments and fulfilling the Big Ten’s mission of academic achievement and athletic success.

2016-17 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S GOLF

Senior Trio Leads Huskers in 2015-16 Nebraska used a strong senior class to lead the Huskers on and off the course to a successful 2015-16 campaign. Cassie Deeg, Morgan Smejkal and Cassidy Stelzmiller provided leadership on the course, in the classroom and the community, while setting the stage for growth in the women’s golf program for years to come. Stelzmiller, a fifth-year senior from Placerville, Calif., continued to see improvements in her game throughout the season, culminating with a team-best tie for 25th at the 2016 Big Ten Championships. It marked the second top-25 conference finish in Stelzmiller’s career. Stelzmiller’s threeround tournament score of 219 (74-72-73) at The Fort Golf Resort in Indianapolis, helped the Huskers to a three-round score of 890. Nebraska’s total represented a 27-stroke improvement from its 2015 performance on the same course at the conference championships. Stelzmiller not only led the way for the Huskers at the Big Ten Tournament, she also earned the third WGCA Scholastic All-America award of her Nebraska career. A fourtime academic All-Big Ten selection, Stelzmiller earned her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska as an accounting major in December of 2015. A two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, Stelzmiller also earned a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2016 for her overall commitment to the Husker Life Skills program. Fellow senior Cassie Deeg led the Huskers throughout the 2015-16 season with a team-best 75.38 stroke average. She finished her career as a four-year starter in the Nebraska lineup with the second-best stroke average in school history. Her career 76.31 stroke average trailed only first-team AllAmerican Sarah Sasse’s 75.89 career average as a Husker. Deeg, who came to Nebraska from Hugo, Minn., tied for 50th in her final appearance at the Big Ten Championships, producing a three-round total of 225 (74-77-74). She added a pair of top-25 finishes on the year to close her Nebraska career with 12 top-25 performances. A three-time academic All-Big Ten selection, Deeg was also a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and was Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner in both 2015 and 2016. Deeg earned a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2015. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in May of 2016 as a marketing major. Morgan Smejkal rounded out Nebraska’s accomplished senior trio in 2015-16. The Columbus, Neb., native produced a career-best 75.75 stroke average while claiming three top20 individual tournament finishes as a senior. She closed her final campaign at Nebraska with a tie for 54th at the Big Ten Championships with a three-round score of 226 (76-78-76). Like her senior teammates Deeg and Stelzmiller, Smejkal was also a standout in the classroom and the community. Smejkal was a four-time academic All-Big Ten choice and the first repeat winner of the Beatrice Dierks Rohman Memorial Scholarship in school history. She was also a three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and claimed a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award for her overall commitment to Nebraska’s Life Skills program in 2014.

Cassidy Stelzmiller produced an outstanding senior season in 2015-16. The three-time WGCA Scholastic All-American led the Huskers with her tie for 25th at the 2016 Big Ten Championships. The four-time academic All-Big Ten choice also claimed a Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award after earning her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in December of 2015.

Smejkal earned her bachelor’s degree from Nebraska in December of 2015 as a marketing and managment major While Nebraska’s 2016 seniors provided strong leadership throughout the season, Haley Thiele showed the Huskers plenty of reasons of hope for a bright future. Nebraska’s lone freshman in 2015-16, Thiele finished second on the squad with a 75.63 stroke average - shattering Nebraska’s freshman record by well more than a stroke. Thiele also provided the Huskers with their No. 2 finish at the Big Ten Championships, tying for 39th with a three-round score of 222 (75-73-74). During the season, Thiele tied the Nebraska record for best three-round tournament score with her 209 at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev., Oct. 2527, 2015. Her 54-hole total, which matched first-team AllAmerican Sarah Sasse’s score at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo., Sept. 9-10, 2002, included a 2015-16 Nebraska Individual Stroke Averages Nebraska freshman-recordGolfer Strokes Rounds Average tying 67 in the opening round, Cassie Deeg . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,186.....................29 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75.38 and a 69 in the second round Haley Thiele . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,420.....................32 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75.63 to produce the best 36-hole score (136) by any Husker in Morgan Smejkal . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2,424.....................32 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75.75 history. Sarah Pravecek was also a regular contributor for the Huskers in 2015-16. The junior from Omaha, Neb., competed in 24 rounds on the season and finished with a 77.83 stroke average. She closed the year by finishing 75th at the Big Ten Championships. The two-time academic All-Big Ten selection also earned a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team in 2016. 2016-17 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S GOLF

THIS IS NEBRASKA Nebraska continues to add to its impressive tradition of success in women’s golf. In 2012, Madeleine Sheils became the first golfer in Husker history to earn All-Big Ten honors by taking third in Nebraska’s first-ever Big Ten Tournament. Sheils, who went on to compete at the NCAA Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio, capped one of the top careers in school history as a fourtime WGCA Scholastic All-American. In 2008, the Huskers earned their 11th trip to the NCAA Regional Championships, just missing a bid to the 24-team NCAA Championships. The Huskers have finished among the top 24 teams in the nation three times in the past 16 seasons. In 2006, the Huskers posted the best NCAA Championship score in school history, while finishing 20th at the event. Entering her 30th season at the helm of the Nebraska women’s golf program, Coach Robin Krapfl has guided the Huskers to 30 tournament titles, 11 NCAA Regional appearances and all three of the school’s NCAA Tournament bids. Husker women’s golfers epitomize Nebraska’s commitment to success in athletics, academics and life. Husker golfers have captured a nation-leading 69 WGCA Scholastic AllAmerica honors. The Husker women’s golf team is also one of NU’s most active teams in the community. The 2006 Nebraska women’s golf team (main photo) enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history by finishing 20th at the NCAA Championships. Steph Ruiz (bottom left) matched the best four-round NCAA Tournament score in school history with a 301. Sarah Sasse (bottom middle) made history in 2003 when she earned first-team All-America honors for the Huskers. Sasse was also named the Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Year and led the 2003 Huskers (top right) to a 22nd-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Sasse was inducted into the inaugural class of the University of Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in the fall 2015. The 2000 Huskers (middle right) posted the best NCAA Championship finish in school history by taking 19th. Heidi Wall (bottom right) captured CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the Huskers in 1996. The Lincoln native helped NU to three straight NCAA Regional appearances from 1994 to 1996.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-America awards to 325, adding five Huskers in 2015-16. Senior guard Shavon Shields (Olathe, Kan., Biological Sciences) earned his second consecutive first-team Academic All-America award in men’s basketball before being named Nebraska’s Male StudentAthlete of the Year. Shields (pictured right with Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst) was also a member of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team for his outstanding community service. He was joined by Nebraska Female Student-Athlete-ofthe-Year Mattie Fowler (Tucson, Ariz., Finance) as a first-team Academic All-American in 2015-16. Fowler (pictured below) was the President of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Board in 2014-15. She and Shields were Nebraska’s Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in 2015-16. The Nebraska men’s track and field team continued its extraordinary run of CoSIDA Academic All-America success with three-time first-team honoree Levi Gipson (Lincoln, Neb., Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science) and fellow first-team award winner Cody Rush (Grand Island, Neb., Nutrition Science). Rush, who earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades in 2014, joined baseball outfielder Ryan Boldt (Red Wing, Minn., Nutrition Science) as a two-time honoree. Boldt also earned third-team recognition in 2015. Graduation is the ultimate achievement, and 109 Husker student-athletes earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in three commencement exercises at Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2015-16.

A total of 109 Nebraska student-athletes earned their degrees in 2015-16, including 62 in May 2016, 39 in December 2015 and eight in August 2015. Cassidy Stelzmiller (above left) earned her bachelor’s degree as an accounting major from Nebraska in December of 2015. A two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and four-time academic All-Big Ten selection from Placerville, Calif., Stelzmiller posted Nebraska’s best finish at the 2016 Big Ten Championships. Morgan Smejkal (above right) earned her degree from Nebraska in December of 2015 after majoring in marketing and management. “I always felt the entire athletic department was dedicated to my personal excellence, so I could succeed as a student and as an athlete. As an adult, the Nebraska community has provided me with wonderful opportunities to continue my growth as a professional. ” Sarah Sasse-Kildow, All-American (2003) Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee (2015) The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Additional performancebased or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs for student-athletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska. Top: The grand entrance to the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex welcomes student-athletes to Memorial Stadium. The entrance highlights the achievements of many current student-athletes across all sports, while also featuring the trophies won by Nebraska’s nationleading 17 NCAA Top Ten Award winners. STUDENT-ATHLETE LIFE In May of 2016, 20 Husker student-athletes, a Nebraska letterwinner alum and and four staff members participated in a service trip abroad to the Dominican Republic. The Huskers spent time with members of the community of Las Pajas to create a local sports court and create a mural at a community center.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to studentathletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. • Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities. • Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics. • Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every student-athlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school.

Huskers for Life

Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl (left) celebrated the induction of Husker great Sarah Sasse (right) in the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame. Sasse was a first-team All-American and the Big 12 Conference Golfer of the Year in 2003, before being a member of the inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2015.

Life Skills Awards

Cassidy Stelzmiller captured a prestigious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award as a senior in 2016. The award is presented to NU’s most committed student-athletes to community service across all sports. Stelzmiller was a two-time Tom Osborne Citizenship Team member, a three-time WGCA Scholastic AllAmerican and a four-time academic All-Big Ten choice.

Outreach events include hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies (including the Sportsmanship 4 Life Pep Rally, Make-A-Wish, NFL Play 60 and Husker Heroes.

Leadership

Student-athletes can participate in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes or Husker Distinction Council. UNL offers more than 600 recognized student organizations allowing athletes to collaborate with campus leaders for common goals. Nebraska Life Skills funds and coordinates an annual oneweek service abroad trip that allows 20 studentathletes to work toward a common goal while enriching cultural competencies.

RECOGNITION

In 2015-16, a record 347 Husker student-athletes were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for completing a minimum of six service projects in the calendar year. A host of other recognition opportunities at the institutional, Big Ten and NCAA levels that all reflect the high ideals, character and servant leadership nurtured through community involvement also are available.

POST-ELIGIBILITY OPPORTUNITIES

Success in Competition, Classroom, community

The Nebraska women’s golf team is committed to succeeding on the course, in the classroom and in the community. Huskers (from left) Sarah Pravecek, Audrey Judd, Morgan Smejkal, Cassidy Stelzmiller, Emily Gillman and Cassie Deeg were all honored for both academic achievement and community service at Nebraska’s annual academic recognition event in April of 2016.

Effective December 2015 and beyond, studentathletes who letter and graduate have a three-year window to benefit from one of three post-eligibility opportunities ($7,500 each). Upon completion of required seminars, graduates can either study abroad, complete an internship or begin graduate school within the University of Nebraska system.

Diversity and Inclusion

The Life Skills program is responsible for all Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for Husker Athletics. The first Diversity and Inclusion Summit occurred in January of 2016 and reached all student-athletes and staff with a message of acceptance and unity.
