Experienced Huskers Look to Capitalize in 2010-11 Despite the loss of four-time tournament champion Brandon Crick from last season, the Nebraska men’s golf team returns four seniors and a slew of young talent for the 2011 spring season. In the 10th season under the direction of Head Coach Bill Spangler, the Huskers earned three top-three finishes in five fall tournaments, as well as a dual win against Creighton. Nebraska recorded a team stroke average of 296.53, which was often times good enough to satisfy Spangler. “As a team we want to put ourselves in position each and every tournament to have an opportunity to play for the title on the last day. That comes from good practice habits, solid course management, and a great attitude, in good times and in bad,” Spangler said. “Each player should expect more of themselves each day, each week, and each practice.” When the spring season rolls around, the Huskers will strive to qualify for the NCAA Regionals for the first time since the 200607 campaign. On top of that, NU will try to continue their success from last spring when they won two tournaments, the Jackrabbit Invitational and the Mizzou Intercollegiate. Nebraska got off to a good start during the fall season with a dual win over the Creighton Bluejays in September. Junior Scott Willman’s one-under round of 70 at Omaha Country Club set the tone for the Huskers’ 19-stroke victory over their intrastate rivals. Mike Coatman, Brett Nymeyer and Austin Zimmerman each shot even-par rounds of 71, as they went on to shoot even-par as a team. The Huskers hosted their first tournament of the season, the Fairway Club Invitational at Arbor Links, which included 12 teams. Lincoln native and senior Mike Coatman shot a 68 in the second round of the rain-shortened tournament, which gave him his first individual collegiate win. The Huskers finished third as a team, with Andrew Wyatt and Scott Willman tying for 13th. NU continued its success on the course the following week at the Kansas Invitational. Three Huskers posted top-10 finishes, as the team earned runner-up honors. Coatman and Wyatt each shot 215 over three rounds and tied for third overall. Willman tied for eighth. As the month shifted to October, the Huskers traveled to Illinois for the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate. Nebraska finished in third place, which gave the Huskers three consecutive top three results for the first time since 2006. Yet again they were led by the efforts of Wyatt, who tied for fifth overall. Senior Brett Nymeyer fired a 69 in the final round, which propelled him to a tie for 13th finish. The Huskers moved on to the Bill Ross 2

Senior Mike Coatman had two top-10 finishes during the 2010 fall season.

Intercollegiate in Kansas City, where they took ninth in a 14-team field. Willman’s 221stroke total put him in a tie for 11th individually, which led NU for the tournament. At their final tournament of the fall season, the Huskers finished in 11th at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in New Mexico. Wyatt, Nymeyer and Neil Dufford each shot 69s at NMSU Golf Course, but Wyatt posted the best finish, tying for 27th.

This spring, the Huskers will compete in six tournaments leading up to the Big 12 Championship, but their top priority is to get back to an NCAA Regional. NU will look to seniors Coatman, Wyatt, Nymeyer and Brett Sundberg to provide the veteran leadership in the absence of Crick. Coatman, Wyatt and Nymeyer competed in every round for the Huskers during the fall season along with Willman. Wyatt led the team during the fall with his 73.87 stroke average, which included two top-five finishes. Although the team only has five players in the lineup each week, the Huskers have substantial depth with Zimmerman, Dufford, Manuel Lavin de La Riva and Jordan Reinertson each earning playing time during the fall. Reinertson’s brother, Josh, is redshirting this season and senior Tyler Parsloe is a nonplaying member of the team. Zimmerman, a junior, posted his top career finish at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, finishing 36th. Dufford earned the majority of his playing time at the end of the fall season, posting a tie for 32nd and tie for 33rd at the last two Husker tournaments. Freshman Lavin de La Riva made his tournament debut as a Husker at the Fairway Club Invitational, where he shot a two-under 70 in the second round. He went on to play the following week at Kansas, earning an 80.00 stroke average in his first six rounds at Nebraska. Reinertson, a sophomore, also competed in the first two tournaments of the season, compiling a 76.00 stroke average in six rounds.

Senior Andrew Wyatt had the best stroke average (73.87) among the Huskers during the 2010 fall campaign.

Home Courses

The Nebraska men’s golf team practices at three of the finest facilities in the Midwest: Wilderness Ridge (bottom right) is a public course that opened in 2001, and ranks among the top courses in the area. In addition to a demanding championship layout, Wilderness Ridge features one of the top indoor practice facilities in Nebraska. Wilderness Ridge offers a challenging layout while providing the Huskers with a convenient practice location. The clubhouse at Wilderness Ridge was also recognized by Golf Inc. magazine as one of the best new facilities in the nation in 2003. The Huskers also regularly practice at Firethorn Golf Club (top). Home to the 2002 Division III Men’s Golf Championship, the

Pete Dye designed course was rated 36th among the top 100 modern courses in the country. Firethorn has also hosted the 96th United States Women’s Amateur. Firethorn is a “links” or target-oriented course with naturally flourishing shrubs and grasses. ArborLinks Golf Club (bottom left) in Nebraska City has played home to Nebraska’s Fairway Club Invitational for three consecutive years, including the fall of 2010. The Arnold Palmer design sits on a 330-acre parcel next to the Arbor Day Farm, a popular resort destination. ArborLinks plays off the natural landscape with hazards and bunkers that create an old world feel.

Big 12 Conference The Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of national success on the field and in the classroom as it enters its 15th season in 2010-11. Since it began play in 1996-97, the conference can boast 38 team crowns and 440 individual NCAA Championships. In basketball, six women’s teams have advanced to their respective Final Fours in the past eight seasons. Nebraska Coach Connie Yori was a unanimous choice for National Coach-of-the-Year honors, while Husker forward Kelsey Griffin gave the conference a consensus women's basketball All-American for the 10th straight season. Griffin also won the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award for her exceptional commitment to success on the court, in the classroom and the community. Nebraska rolled to the regular-season conference title with the first undefeated season (29-0) by a men's or women's team in league history before being one of four league school's to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16, including Final Four qualifiers Baylor and Oklahoma. Nebraska also led the Big 12 in conference attendance last year, attracting more than 11,000 fans per game for its eight home contests, helping the league lead the nation in women's basketball attendance for the 11th straight season. On the men’s side, nine conference schools have reached the Final Four in the past eight years, and six teams have reached the regional finals in the past three seasons. Big 12 squads enjoyed a strong year across the board in 2009-10. Oklahoma State won the NCAA men’s cross country title while Texas captured the national championship in men’s swimming and diving. Texas A&M secured men's and women's outdoor track and field championships, and the Big 12 had the No. 1 team in the nation at some point during the 2009-10 season in nine different sports. Five Big 12 volleyball teams, including perennial national power Nebraska, competed in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Championships in 2010, the first time that has happened in conference history. The Big 12 also had a school play for the BCS National Championship (Texas) for the seventh season. Oklahoma finished second nationally at the NCAA women’s gymnastics finals - an all-time high for the Big 12 - while Oklahoma State placed second at the men’s golf championship. Iowa State was third at the NCAA wrestling championships and the Big 12 also placed a team in the College World Series in both softball (Missouri) and baseball (Oklahoma). The individual honors also continued, as Jenny Barringer (Colorado) earned The Bowerman Award, presented for the first time to the most outstanding collegiate women’s track and field athlete. In fact, all three women’s finalists were from the Big 12. Caroline Hedwall (Oklahoma State) was named the recipient of the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top female golfer after capturing the NCAA individual title. Lisa Koll (Iowa State) earned the Honda Award as the top collegiate female athlete in track and field. The Big 12 has had four Heisman Trophy winners in its 14-year history. In 2008, the Big 12 established a high-water mark, as for the first time in the 74-year history of the Heisman four of the top five vote-getters hailed from the same conference, including award-winner Sam Bradford (Oklahoma). The league followed that recognition with two of the top five finalists, including Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, in 2009. During the past six seasons a total of 16 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the conference, including each of the past 13 seasons. The Big 12 leads all conferences with its seven appearances in BCS title games. Seven league squads have played for the football national championship in the last 10 years with berths in 17 BCS games overall. The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) earned countless accolades for her work away from competition, being named the Academic All-America of the Year for all sports in both 2006-07 and 2007-08. She was also named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade. Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards. Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 249 scholars have received over $1.6 million in postgraduate financial aid. The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

BILL

SPANGLER > Head Coach Bill Spangler is entering his 10th season at the helm of the Nebraska men’s golf program. The Lincoln native and NU graduate has a background of success at all levels in the game of golf, and the Huskers continue to make progress under his direction. Spangler is a natural fit to guide the Husker men’s golf program. He followed a strong junior career in the state with a standout collegiate career and a distinguished record in the national amateur ranks. Long regarded as one of the state’s top amateur players, Spangler served as an assistant coach with the Husker women’s golf program for seven seasons. He took the reins as men’s head coach in June of 2001, replacing Larry Romjue, who retired after 31 seasons as the Nebraska men’s coach. In his first nine seasons as head coach, Spangler has focused on building a strong program in the Big 12 Conference. A key part of Spangler’s building process has been keeping Nebraska’s top junior players in state and building around them. Once players are in the program, Spangler incorporates a coaching philosophy that encourages his golfers to focus on their strengths, while helping them refine and improve their mental approach to the game. The confidence and commitment Spangler has injected into the Nebraska program allowed NU to record back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances in 2006 and 2007. Despite an impressive team resume in 2009-10, the Huskers just missed qualifying for a regional appearance. NU captured two team titles in the spring for the first time in four years, and Spangler guided the Big Red to five top-three finishes and seven top-five finishes on the season. In addition, senior standout Brandon Crick closed his college career with an individual title at the Jackrabbit Invitational. He led NU to the team title and tied for first while powering NU to a team title at the Mizzou Intercollegiate. The Husker lineup posted a 292.41 stroke average in 2009-10, which ranked as the best for a Spangler-coached team. In addition, Crick qualified individually for the NCAA Regionals,

> 10th Season

> Nebraska (1985)

posting a tied for eighth finish. Dedicated to developing each player on and off the course, Spangler saw two of his golfers earn first-team academic All-Big 12 honors in 2009-10, bringing his total of academic All-Big 12 honorees to 20 in just nine seasons. Juniors Andrew Wyatt and Mike Coatman earned first-team honors for the first time in their careers. Wyatt had previously been named to the second team. Spangler’s first season in 2001-02 proved to be a confidence builder for the program. The Huskers recorded six top-10 team finishes, including a first-place showing at the Branson Creek Invitational, the program’s first tournament title in three years. Jim Troy also captured an individual crown at Kansas State’s Wildcat Invitational, helping the Huskers to a second-place finish. In Spangler’s second year, the Huskers continued to make progress. Nebraska featured a mix of experience and youth, and Spangler’s leadership kept the Huskers on track. NU finished in the top six in seven tournaments in 2002-03, including five times during its spring slate. Three seniors were relied on through much of his second season, while Spangler also oversaw the emergence of freshman Judd Cornell. Spangler’s third Husker team made steady improvements from the fall to the spring schedule. Nebraska finished second or higher in three consecutive tournaments in the spring, including a victory at the PepsiCola Invitational. The Huskers’spring success came despite a roster that included just two seniors and no juniors. In his fourth year, Spangler guided the Huskers to a season-opening home tournament victory at the Fairway Club Invitational, and the team went on to snag three more top-10 finishes in the fall. In the spring, the squad tallied four more top-five spots as well as the second tournament victory of the year at the Branson Creek Invitational. The Huskers opened the 2005-06 season by winning their own Fairway Club Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club. Spangler’s

to record three top-five finishes in the fall and put itself in position for an NCAA Regional berth. Nebraska continued its success into the spring season, where the Huskers placed in the top five four times, including a first-place finish at the Branson Creek Invitational in Branson, Mo., in April. Nebraska capped the year with a sixthplace finish at the Big 12 Championship, its highest in seven seasons. NU went on to make its first NCAA Regional appearance since 1999 and finished 22nd at the Central Regional. In 2006-07, Spangler’s squad finished second three times while recording seven top-five finishes for the second consecutive season. The Huskers again finished sixth at the Big 12 Championship and came in 21st at the NCAA Central Regional. Perhaps the best golfer in Spangler’s short tenure, Brady Schnell capped a terrific career with an outstanding senior season in 2006-07. Schnell captured the Ron Moore Invitational title, while recording eight top-10 finishes and four top-five showings. Schnell finished third at the Big 12 Championship to become the first golfer under Spangler to earn All-Big 12 accolades. In 2007-08, freshmen Wyatt and Coatman led NU to an 11th-place finish at the Big 12 Championship. Wyatt’s 75.33 stroke average was the best freshman mark posted by a Husker in 10 years, and Coatman competed in every round for Spangler. The following year, Spangler built for the future with his young Husker squad. Although the Huskers finished 11th at the Big 12 Championship for a second straight season, NU got positive

performances throughout the season from its underclassmen. Crick became the fourth golfer in Spangler’s tenure at NU to win an individual title, and Coatman posted a team-best 74.15 stroke average. Six of the top seven stroke averages were posted by underclassmen, and 85 percent of the rounds played in 2008-09 were by underclassmen. Spangler’s goals have always been and remain building the Husker program into one of the conference’s best, and making Nebraska golf a permanent fixture in NCAA postseason competition. He has the knowledge to accomplish those goals after helping the Husker women’s program reach those same heights. During his seven seasons as an assistant to Nebraska women’s coach Robin Krapfl, the Huskers reached NCAA Regionals five times, including an appearance in the 2000 NCAA Championship. Spangler also experienced success in collegiate golf as a player. He was a member of the Arizona State golf team from 1980 to 1982, then transferred to Nebraska to play for Romjue. Spangler’s Husker career was highlighted by an individual and team victory at the 1984 Kansas Invitational, and he lettered for Nebraska in both 1984 and 1985. I n addition to his collegiate accomplishments, Spangler racked up an impressive amateur golf resume starting as a junior player and continuing to the present. He captured his first state championship in 1979, winning the Nebraska Junior Amateur at Beatrice Country Club. Spangler captured the Nebraska State Match Play Championship in 1987 at Lochland Country Club in

Head Coach Bill Spangler’s daughters (from left): Cameron, 11, and Elsa, 6. Hastings, the same year he qualified for the match-play portion of the competition at the U.S. Amateur. His outstanding season in 1987 earned Spangler the first of his two Nebraska Amateur Player-of-the-Year awards. Spangler was the runner-up in the 2000 Nebraska Amateur Championship and represented the state in the U.S. MidAmateur that fall. His play earned him a second Nebraska Amateur-of-the-Year Award at the conclusion of the season. In addition to his 1987 U.S. Amateur appearance, Spangler also played in the country’s most prestigious amateur event in 1986, narrowly missing the cut for match play. Overall, Spangler has participated in eight USGA tournaments, and is also a two-time Lincoln Men’s City Champion, and

was the runner-up in the Trans-Mississippi Amateur in 1985. Spangler again played strong at the 2008 Nebraska State Match Play Championship at ArborLinks in Nebraska City, 21 years after his Nebraska Match Play title. Spangler made a run to the final eight of the 64man field, before bowing out to Husker Brandon Crick - the eventual champion. At the Nebraska Amateur Championship the following month, Spangler played well enough through four rounds to earn a top-15 finish. Spangler graduated from Nebraska in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He is married to the former Alesia Dodson and they have two daughters, Cameron, 11, and Elsa, 5.

Dick Spangler Golf Scholarship The Dick Spangler Golf Scholarship Award is presented at the end of each golf season to a sophomore or junior golfer who has made significant contributions to the men’s golf program through his attitude, effort and team spirit. Jordan Reinertson received the award for the 2010-11 season. The recipient is selected by the men’s golf coach. Dick Spangler earned three letters for the Nebraska golf team from 1950 to 1952, was a Nebraska Amateur champion and served on the board of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. Always a gentlemen, his quick wit, enjoyable sense of humor and his dedication to the game of golf bring honor and credit to the University of Nebraska and the great game of life. Dick Spangler was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1997. He passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, in Lincoln. BEDIENT

> Assistant Coach Tony Bedient is in his second season as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska men’s golf coaching staff and is excited to help the program get to the next level. Originally from York, Neb., Bedient has traveled the country and teaching for ESPN Golf Schools under the direction of Hank Haney (Tiger Woods’former swing coach) and many other great instructors. Last season, he helped guide Brandon Crick to a 72.27 stroke average and two first-place finishes. Since 2005, Bedient has been learning from some of the best instructors in the world. In November 2005, he was personally trained on the golf swing by Haney. “I had the opportunity of watching Hank teach students for three straight days in a golf school,” Bedient said. “I had read all of his books on the golf swing, and I found out watching him teach was a great way to shed light on all he talked about in his books.” Bedient also had the opportunity to attend a Hank Haney “Teach the Teacher” seminar at one of Haney’s facilities in Dallas, Texas. At “Teach the Teacher,” Haney spent time in the classroom going over his swing theories and what is most important in the golf swing. In 2006, Bedient was named a lead instructor shortly after he became a full-time golf instructor for ESPN. Bedient not only had the opportunity of working with some of the best instructors in the world, but also had the opportunity of leading golf schools for ESPN in 10 states around the country. Over the course of a three-year period, Bedient taught 4,000 students for ESPN Golf Schools alone.

> Second Season “Seeing that many students was one of the greatest opportunities that I have had in my teaching career,” Bedient said. “When working with that many students, it forces you to diagnose and fix the main problem in the golf swing.” One of Bedient’s many strengths as a teacher is his open-minded approach to learning new things about all aspects of the game. In 2008, Bedient joined the staff of Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and became a certified golf instructor. Bedient has since received a level two TPI instructor certification. Bedient’s involvement with TPI opens up a new door for players coming to Nebraska to not only improve their game, but also improve their fitness just like players on the PGA tour. “One of the things that I want all recruits to know when coming to the University of Nebraska is that I can guarantee that if they come here with an open mind and a great work ethic, they will be prepared to take their game to the highest level if that is their goal.”

BEDIENT’S TEACHING HIGHLIGHTS Worked with seven Top 100 teachers in the world over the last four years Lead instructor for ESPN golf schools for three years Head instructor for ESPN at Centennial Golf Club in Carmel, N.Y. > 5-10

2010-11 OUTLOOK

Mike Coatman started every fall tournament for the Huskers, shooting his way to a 75.00 stroke average. He started off his senior campaign with an individual victory at the Fairway Club Invitational, and followed that up with a tie for third the following week in Kansas. He tied his career-best score of 68 in each of those events. Coatman is one of four seniors on the team, and his leadership will be crucial for Nebraska in the spring.

JUNIOR (2009-10)

Coatman had a strong start to his junior season, finishing in the top 10 in three of his first four tournaments. In the spring, Coatman added a seasonbest tie for seventh at the Jackrabbit Invitational, which aided the Huskers in capturing their first team title in four years. Coatman shot a career-best 68 in the final round to move into the top 10. Coatman tied for 15th at the Mizzou Intercollegiate to help the Huskers earn their second title of the spring. Coatman ended the year with a 74.89 stroke average, good for fourth on the team. Coatman earned first-team Academic All-Big 12 honors at semester’s end for his productivity on the course and in the classroom.

SOPHOMORE (2008-09)

Coatman was a leader on the course for NU during his sophomore campaign. From the second tournament onward, Coatman led NU in scoring. He finished the season with a 74.15 stroke average and competed in a team-high 34 rounds. At the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate, Coatman shot a career-best 213, which was the top score by a Husker golfer all season. Coatman tied for ninth. Coatman earned a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for the first time in his career following the spring semester.

FRESHMAN (2007-08)

Coatman emerged as one of the top golfers for the Huskers in his freshman season. He played his best golf of the year at the Big 12 Championship. He

led the entire field during much of the first round and hung around the top 10 through the first three rounds. His 79 in the final round dropped him into a tie for 16th place with a 295, but it was still the best finish of any Husker and the best finish of Coatman’s freshman season. The only Husker to compete in all 36 rounds during the season, Coatman finished with a final stroke average of 75.47, second-best on the team.

HIGH SCHOOL

Coatman was a four-year letterwinner for Lincoln Southwest, earning all-state honors all four years. In 2005 and 2006, he tied for sixth both seasons as the Silverhawks recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes. In his senior season, Coatman tied for third at the Nebraska state tournament, helping Southwest to the Class A team title. For his efforts, he was named honorary co-captain of the allcity team by the Lincoln Journal Star. Coatman has also been active on the Nebraska amateur circuit, winning the 2005 and 2006 Nebraska State Junior Match Play Championships before adding a runner-up finish in 2007. Coatman also qualified for the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur.

Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past three seasons. With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program as a whole, the Huskers have enjoyed renewed success in Osborne’s first three years as athletic director. In 2009-10, Nebraska finished 17th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup final standings, the Huskers’ best showing since 2000-01. One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini, who had spent the 2003 campaign as NU’s defensive coordinator, has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with backto-back nine-win seasons and a pair of Big 12 North Division titles in his first two years. In 2009, Pelini notched 10 wins, including a dominant 33-0 win over Arizona in the Holiday Bowl while finishing in the top 15 in both major national polls. The tradition-rich NU volleyball program has claimed a pair of Big 12 titles and advanced to three NCAA Elite Eight appearances, while the women’s basketball program has earned two NCAA Tournament trips, while notching the best season in school history with a 2010 Big 12 title and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. The NU wrestling program shared the 2009 Big 12 title and finished in the top 16 at three straight NCAA Championships. The NU men’s track and field team has captured a pair of Big 12 outdoor crowns, while the men’s and women’s teams have produced five top-20 finishes indoors and outdoors over the past three years. The men’s and women’s gymnastics teams both 22

> Hastings (1959)

produced top-10 NCAA finishes in 2010, while the Husker bowling team won the 2009 NCAA title and finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships each of the past three years. The NU rifle team has produced a pair of top-six NCAA finishes in the last three years, while the men’s and women’s tennis teams both earned NCAA Tournament trips in 2010. The women won the first NCAA match in school history while the men made their first-ever tournament appearance. The Husker softball team has made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, while the baseball and women’s golf teams both earned NCAA Regional bids in 2008. In addition to their competitive success, the Huskers have continued to set high standards academically at both the conference and national levels. Nebraska led the Big 12 with eight CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2009-10, increasing NU’s nation-leading total to 277 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans all-time, across all sports. The Huskers also led the Big 12 with a league-record 178 academic all-conference selections, along with a conference-record 687 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections. NU graduated 121 studentathletes from August of 2009 through May of 2010, while increasing its Big 12-leading exhausted eligibility graduation rate to 94 percent. The Huskers also have continued to set the standard on the national level in the area of life skills. In 2010-11, Nebraska will open its new Student Life Complex, which is designed to help Husker student-athletes maximize their performance in the classroom and the community. The Student Life Complex is the first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s athletic facilities. In the summer of 2010, the athletic department broke ground on the Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, which will directly benefit the men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling programs with new practice and team areas. The project is also expected to lead to additional opportunities for improved facilities for many other Husker Olympic sport programs. The Hendricks Training Complex is scheduled to open before the 2011-12 season. In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on the 16,000-seat Haymarket Arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14. Not long after the historic vote in Lincoln, Osborne helped Chancellor Harvey Perlman announce an even more historic move with the shift by Nebraska from the Big 12 to the Big Ten Conference beginning in 2011-12. Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten is expected to add University-wide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come. Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to Nebraska as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of

Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006. He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991. TeamMates provides encouragement to schoolaged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season. In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixthmost wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998. Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons. Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games. In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history. Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska’s Athletic Director from 1967 to 1993. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren.

Huskers Added to Trophy Case in 2009-10 The Nebraska men’s golf team just missed out on a return to an NCAA Regional in 2009-10, but that didn’t diminish the impressive resume the Huskers built during the season. The Huskers threatened some decade-old school records en route to one of the best seasons in school history. In addition, senior Brandon Crick put the exclamation point on one of the best careers in school history by earning an individual bid to play in the NCAA Tournament at the West Regional. Following a summer in which Crick won the Nebraska Men’s Amateur and made the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, he elevated his collegiate game, earning two firstplace finishes and posting seven rounds in the 60s as part of his team-best 19 subpar rounds. Following a 2008-09 season that saw the Huskers finish in the top five twice, the Big Red achieved that feat seven times in 2009-10. NU captured two tournament titles, earned two runner-up finishes and posted a 292.41 stroke average - just shy of the school record 291.20 stroke average set by the 1998-99 team that finished 14th at the NCAA Championships.

Fall Season

NU opened its second straight season by hosting the Fairway Club Invitational at ArborLinks Golf Club in Nebraska City. The Huskers battled to a nine-under-par 855, but fell three strokes short of Drake for the team title. Although NU was unable to capitalize on its local advantage, the 855 mark represented its lowest team score in more than two years and set the tone for low scores throughout the season. Junior Andrew Wyatt and sophomore Scott Willman finished fourth and seventh, respectively. Junior Mike Coatman tied for eighth and freshman Neil Dufford tied for 10th in his first collegiate tournament, as four Huskers finished in the top 10 for the first time in at least 12 years. At the following K a n s a s Invitational the Big Red finished sixth, thanks to 10thplace finishes from Coatman and Wyatt. Head Coach Bill Spangler rolled out a lineup that he would use in every Brandon Crick led the Huskers with a 72.27 stroke average in 2009-10. tournament for the rest of the season in Crick, Wyatt, Coatman, Willman and junior transfer Brett Nymeyer. The Huskers needed Crick, who had tied for 14th and 22nd to open the season (fifth and third in the NU lineup), to step up and take charge for NU. Crick did just that, finishing tops for NU in five of the next 10 tournaments - all top-five overall finishes. Crick began his strong play with a tie for fifth at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, where the Huskers tied for third as a team. Crick then helped the Huskers with a sixth-place performance at the

UMKC Bill Ross Intercollegiate, but it was Willman who posted a career-best tie for second to lead NU to second place, five strokes behind Central Arkansas, as the Huskers again challenged for a tournament title but couldn’t finish the deal. Coatman contributed a ninth-place finish for his third top-10 standing of the fall. The Huskers then travelled southwest for the final tournament of the fall, as they tackled the New Mexico State University Golf Course at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. Led by Crick’s career-best 206 (T-4th) and Willman’s career-best 211 (T-19th), the Huskers scored a season-best 853 and were separated from a top-five finish by just one stroke.

Spring Season

NU opened the spring with a fifth-place finish at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas. Crick led the Big Red with a tie for third, his fourth straight top-10 finish. Wyatt then finished in a career-best tie for second at the South Florida Invitational, as NU tied for sixth overall. Wyatt recorded a career-best, seven-underpar 209 to lead the Huskers, who scored a five-overpar 869 as a team. The Huskers then kicked off the final month of the season with a victory at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Primm, Nev. Crick captured his fourth collegiate individual title and Nymeyer, Coatman and Willman added top-10 finishes, as NU earned its first tournament title in four years with an 860 (-4) team score. NU reeled off top-six finishes at the 2010 Desert Shootout and Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic before capturing its second team title of the spring at the Mizzou Intercollegiate to cap the regular season. At the Desert Shootout, Wyatt tied for fifth and Crick finished 10th, while the Huskers finished sixth overall. Nymeyer led NU at the Shocker Classic with a tie for eighth, his second top-10 finish in three tournaments, and NU tied for fifth. But Nebraska put together its best all-around tournament of the year at the season-ending Mizzou Intercollegiate in Columbia, Mo. Crick tied for first and Wyatt tied for ninth, and the Huskers

held on for a one-stroke victory over Kansas State. Although Crick lost on the fourth playoff hole, his tie for first gave him five top-five finishes on the season. The Huskers got solid play up and down the lineup, as all five Huskers finished in the top 23 of the 83-player field. Heading into the Big 12 Championship with a wave of confidence, NU competed well early on, hanging around the top four through much of the first round. A third-round 304 put a damper on the Huskers’ chances, but NU still battled to a 295 on the final day to finish in a tie for seventh, the best finish for the Big Red since a 2007 sixthplace finish. Despite earning two tournament wins, two tournament runner-ups, a No. 79 ranking in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings and a No. 82 ranking in the Golfstat poll, the Huskers as a team were left out of the 81-team NCAA Tournament field. However, Crick earned the No. 3 individual seed in the West Regional and competed May 20-22 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash, where he tied for eighth and fell four strokes shy of earning a bid to the NCAA Championship.

Mike Coatman shot a career-best 68 in the Jackrabbit Invitational to tie for seventh.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 70 tutors addressing all subject areas.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.

STUDY HALL

There are two facets to the study hall program at Nebraska. Student-athletes either attend a structured study hall, typically two hours in length held four days a week, or have flex time where they study a specific number of hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff.

MENTORING

Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

MULTI-CULTURAL PROGRAMS

Designed to enhance cultural awareness, staff members concentrate efforts on issues of transition, adjustment and retention for students of color, international students and women. These support programs include Ladies First, International Night and Your Degree First. Your Degree First is a program designed to assist, motivate and promote minority student-athletes in pursuing the degree of their choice.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with nearly 60 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.
