2011 HUSKERS

After a record-breaking 2009-10 campaign, the Nebraska women’s tennis team is aiming to match those successes this season. Last year’s team posted an overall record of 22-6 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.

With a high level of talent that includes seven returning letterwinners, the 2010-11 Nebraska women’s team is hoping to take the program to new heights.

“Last year’s program was certainly incredibly gifted, but to reach the level of excellence that existed there needs to be an underlying intangible,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said.

“That intangible was definitely the team’s chemistry.”

In addition to their achievements in the NCAA Tournament last season, the Huskers also captured a third-place finish in the Big 12.

As they enter their last season of competition in the conference, the Huskres hope to continue their role as a contender in the Big 12 and grab another strong season in conference play.

“The talent of the team is strong and every member of our program has a beautiful heart and truly is a loving and caring individual,” Jacobson said.

The core of returning talent at Nebraska is excellent, and is led by four talented upperclassmen who are in the midst of recordbreaking runs at Nebraska.

The 2010-11 team’s lone senior this season is Abby Buxton, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Buxton’s play as a backup has been valuable to the Huskers, but her role as a source of positive leadership is indispensible to the team’s chemistry. This season, she will compete for playing time on the court and be a team leader off of it.

“We are depending on Abby to play an instrumental role in the area of positive leadership within our program,” Jacobson said.

“Abby has been a tremendous leader the previous three years and will be asked to continue in that same manner of leadership. She is a tremendous baseliner and is willing to grind it out for as long as it takes to achieve the desired result.”

Nebraska’s lineup of juniors features three extremely talented players who were instrumental to the team’s achievements last season.

MARY WEATHERHOLT, STEFANIE WEINSTEIN AND MADELEINE GEIBERT LEAD A TALENTED GROUP OF HUSKERS INTO ANOTHER EXCITING SEASON OF NEBRASKA WOMEN’S TENNIS. Madeleine Geibert, Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt have already made their mark as some of the most accomplished players in program history, and look to extend their successes this season.

Geibert is coming off a tremendous season with the Huskers in which she was an All-Big 12 selection on both the singles and doubles teams, as well as an academic All-Big 12 selection. Her 50 singles and doubles victories tied her for second on Nebraska’s season combined wins list, and she looks to be an even stronger competitor this season.

“Madeleine is a tremendous talent that we believe will be an upper lineup player for our team,” Jacobson said. “She has played some incredible tennis her first two years in the program and finished the spring season playing at her highest level since becoming a Husker. We believe that with continued improvement in her mental game, she has the potential to finish her career playing at even higher levels. I would consider Madeleine a quiet leader who cares deeply for others.”

After having her freshman season hampered slightly by injuries, Holmberg had a breakout sophomore season that saw her capture the Big 12 No. 6 singles championship and the conference’s No. 3 doubles championship with Mary Weatherholt.

Holmberg was an academic All-Big 12 selection and her combined win total of 45 was one of the best on

“Jennifer’s confidence level is quite high after competing in several tournaments this summer back in Finland with tremendous success,” Jacobson said. ”We believe her improved confidence and successful past spring bodes well for the future. She is a lefty and has a pretty complete all-court game. Jennifer always gives great effort and is a true leader by example.”

Weatherholt is on track to become one of the most accomplished players in Nebraska history, already ranking first at NU in career singles win percentage with a mark of .861 and an alltime record of 62-10. An All-Big 12 singles and academic All-Big 12 selection, Weatherholt will be an instrumental part of Nebraska’s success this season.

“Mary has been an incredible competitor for our program over the past years,” Jacobson said.

“She has achieved more in her freshman and sophomore years than any player in the history of our program. She’s both an amazing talent and an amazing person. Mary is a tremendous ambassador to our program and it is truly a privilege to have her representing our Husker family.”

Nebraska brings four sophomores to the court this year, each with unique abilities to aid the Huskers in their hunt for an NCAA Tournament berth.

Chelsea Finnegan had a freshman season hampered by injuries, but still managed to see action in four matches. Now healthy, Finnegan will compete for playing time with the Huskers and hopes to put her talents to use for the Big Red. “Chelsea is the most improved player in our program this fall,” Jacobson said. For the first time in her college career she has been injury free, and it has had a positive impact on her progress.

Chelsea is a tremendous asset to our program on and off the court.”

Patricia Veresova sat out her freshman year at Nebraska due to NCAA transfer eligibility rules, but is ready to see action on the court for the Huskers this season. She posted five wins during the fall and hopes to increase that total this spring.

“Patricia has had a lot of time off since beginning to compete this fall,” Jacobson said.

huskers.com “Toward the latter part of our fall season, her true ability level began to show through. We expect her to have a tremendously positive impact on our program. Patricia is just beginning to get back to the level she had obtained prior to arriving at Nebraska.”

Janine Weinreich battled injury problems her freshman year at Nebraska, but still managed to have an excellent season for the Huskers, including posting identical 13-8 records in singles and doubles play. She saw the majority of her action at the No. 2 doubles spot and the No. 4 or 5 singles positions, and will continue to compete for time in Nebraska’s lineup this spring.

“Janine has grown tremendously throughout the course of the fall,” Jacobson said. “She has a very aggressive style from the baseline, yet isn’t afraid to pressure you. Janine has a very solid allaround game, and is a tremendous doubles player as well. I believe Janine is on the verge of raising her game to the next level.”

Stefanie Weinstein had an outstanding freshman campaign at Nebraska, compiling 38 combined singles and doubles wins and capturing a spot on the All-Big 12 doubles team. She will enter this spring as one of Nebraska’s top returners and is expected to be a strong contributor to the success of the team.

“Stefanie’s confidence has grown tremendously since last spring due in large part to a renewed confidence in her forehand,” Jacobson said. “She had the best overall performance of anyone on our team this fall, making it to the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Regional Tournament. We are looking for great things from her this spring in both singles and doubles.”

Nebraska will also add a pair of promising freshmen to their lineup this fall. Frederike Putthoff and Maike Zeppernick both hail from Germany and will bring talent and depth to the Huskers.

Putthoff is one of the highest ranked recruits from Germany to commit to Nebraska, and Zeppernick has already seen action with the Huskers in the fall of 2010.

Jacobson enters his 20th season as the winningest coach in Nebraska women’s tennis history. He was the 2010 Big 12 Coach of the Year and has an all-time record of 265-170 with the Huskers. Joining Jacobson on the coaching staff is assistant coach Hayden Perez, who is entering his sixth season at Nebraska. He was the ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the year in 2010 for the Huskers.

Nebraska will see an increased travel slate on the schedule this year, but will still compete at the Nebraska Tennis Center 12 times throughout the season. Despite a challenging schedule, Jacobson has confidence this year’s team will be competitive and has great potential.

“The talent is as good as that of last year’s program,” Jacobson said. “We certainly have the potential to be stronger than a year ago. A tangible goal would be to make it to the Sweet 16, one step farther than last year’s program. This is an extremely challenging goal, but we do believe it’s attainable.”

The Huskers will open their season at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Evanston, Ill., against Boise State on Jan. 29. They will play at home starting on Feb. 4, when they challenge Wyoming at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The team will also have the opportunity to tackle some future conference opponents this season, as they will play a total of four matches against Big Ten Conference members.

Scott Jacobson is in his 20th season as head coach of the Nebraska women’s tennis team, where he is the winningest and longest-serving coach in NU history.

Jacobson has guided the team to 13 straight winning seasons, dating back to the Big 12’s inaugural season in 1996-97, and has had at least 16 victories in five of the past six years.

Last season saw the women’s tennis team achieve their most successful season to date under Jacobson.

The team’s impressive 22-6 record featured a thirdplace Big 12 finish and the Huskers’ first-ever victory in the NCAA Tournament against Illinois. In recognition of the team’s accomplishments, Jacobson was named the 2010 Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second time in his career at Nebraska.

The 2010 season marked the eighth straight year a Husker was honored as a first-team All-Big 12 selection. Mary Weatherholt and Madeleine Geibert were each named to the All-Big 12 Singles team, while Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein were named to the AllBig 12 Doubles team. Under Jacobson, seven players have earned Big 12 individual titles, as well as 24 firstteam All-Big 12 honors by 12 players.

Jacobson achieved his 250th career victory in the 2009-10 season, after entering with 243 wins. In the seventh match of the season against Air Force, the Huskers swept the Falcons 7-0 to give the coach the milestone victory. After laying a strong foundation in his first five years in Lincoln, Jacobson has helped Nebraska become a fixture in the national rankings and a force in the Big 12 Conference.

Jacobson was named the 2005 Big 12 Coach of the Year after leading the team to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and an 18-4 record. The following year, the Huskers made it to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships, the farthest they have advanced in team history. They finished with a 17-

10 record in 2006 and another berth to the NCAA Championships, while Kim Hartmann was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

In 2009, Jacobson helped the Huskers to their second straight 16-7 record, balancing a lineup of three talented newcomers along with three experienced seniors and four other returning letterwinners. The Huskers’ 7-4 Big 12 record was good enough for fourth place in the conference, the team’s second-highest finish ever and highest since it finished third in the 2005 season.

Academics have always been an area of success of the women’s tennis team under Jacobson. During his career at NU, Jacobson’s Huskers have earned 41 academic all-conference accolades, including 28 first-team certificates. Jacobson also guided the athletic career of two-time CoSIDA Academic AllAmerican Imke Reimers.

Before becoming head coach in 1991, Jacobson helped the NU men’s team to an 84-86 record as an assistant coach for nine years. After playing professionally for two seasons, Jacobson served as an assistant with the Husker men’s program from 1979 to 1989. Jacobson also spent 11 years as the assistant director of the Tennis and Life Camp in St. Peter, Minn. He has been an employee of the camp for 22 years.

In 1995, Jacobson was awarded the David Aasen Award by the staff of the Tennis and Life Camp. The award honors enthusiasm, energy, sense of humor, high standards of sportsmanship, a love of teaching and a genuine concern for others.

Originally from Blue Earth, Minn., Jacobson has been involved in many activities in Nebraska. In the past he has been an instructor for the Lincoln Racquet Club and coordinator for the Husker Netters Booster Club.

Assistant coach Hayden Perez enters his sixth season at Nebraska in 2010-11. Perez is in his 11th season as a collegiate coach, and assists with team travel, recruiting, practices and on-court coaching.

The Huskers have had a combined record of 84-39 in Perez’s first five seasons as assistant coach.

In his first season with the Huskers, Perez helped guide Nebraska to its second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament, as NU finished with a 1710 record and advanced to the semifinals of the 2006 Big 12 Championships. Perez assisted the development of Kim Hartmann, who was named the 2006 Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

Perez helped the Huskers to a 16-7 record in 2009, including a 7-4 Big 12 mark, and was instrumental in coaching Nebraska to its first-ever NCAA tournament victory over Illinois.

Perez was named the ITA Central Region’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007 as one of eight coaches in the eight ITA regions to receive the award. Perez was automatically qualified along with the other seven coaches for the National Assistant Coach of the Year Award.

Perez assisted the Huskers to their recordbreaking 22-6 finish in 2010, in which the team finished third in the Big 12 Conference and 35th in the nation. His coaching role was also key in the seasons of All-Big 12 selections Madeleine Geibert, Mary Weatherholt and Stefanie Weinstein. For his efforts, Perez was named the ITA Central Region’s Assistant Coach of the Year for the second time in four years.

Before coming to Lincoln, Perez spent the 200405 season at Florida State. At FSU, Perez helped Mihaela Moldovan earn All-America honors, the Seminoles’ first All-American in nine years. Perez helped the Seminoles to a 2005 NCAA Tournament

appearance and a final ranking of 43rd in the ITA team poll.

Perez’s coaching experience also includes stints at Cameron University, Wyoming and Air Force. At Air Force, Perez also worked as the Director of Player Development for the Intermountain Section of the U.S. Tennis Association where he oversaw endorsement opportunities, scheduling, rankings and junior competition.

As a player, Perez earned MVP honors twice and advanced to the finals of the Midwest Region Championships in 1996 while playing at Cameron University. He was ranked as high as No. 17 in singles and earned a top-five national ranking in Men’s Open Doubles by the U.S. Tennis Association.

At Collin County (Texas) CC, Perez helped the team to an NJCAA national team championship in 1995, when he won the doubles national title and earned first-team All-America honors. Perez earned a No. 1 national ranking in doubles and was ranked in the top 30 in singles play at the junior college level.

Perez, who won at least 20 matches in each of his four years of collegiate tennis, was previously a member of the Abilene (Texas) High School squad that won the 1991 Class 5A state title. He still plays competitive tennis on the national scene in the Men’s 30 Division and in select tournaments throughout the year.

Perez graduated from Cameron University in 1999 with a business administration degree, and is married to the former Gretchen McGeough. They have a son, Tristen, born in October 2008.

Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past three seasons.

With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program as a whole, the Huskers have enjoyed renewed success in Osborne’s first three years as athletic director. In 2009-10, Nebraska finished 17th in the NACDA Directors’ Cup final standings, the Huskers’ best showing since 2000-01.

One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini, who had spent the 2003 campaign as NU’s defensive coordinator, has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with three straight nine-win seasons and a trio of Big 12 North Division titles in his first three years. In 2009 and 2010, Pelini notched 10 wins,and competed in the Holiday Bowl while finishing in the top 25 in both major national polls.

The tradition-rich NU volleyball program has claimed a pair of Big 12 titles and advanced to three NCAA Elite Eight appearances, while the women’s basketball program has earned two NCAA Tournament trips, while notching the best season in school history with a 2010 Big 12 title and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16. The NU wrestling program shared the 2009 Big 12 title and finished in the top 16 at three straight NCAA Championships. The NU men’s track and field team has captured a pair of Big 12 outdoor crowns, while the men’s and women’s teams have produced five top-20 finishes indoors and outdoors over the past three years.

The men’s and women’s gymnastics teams both produced top-10 NCAA finishes in 2010, while the Husker bowling team won the 2009 NCAA title and finished in the top eight at the NCAA Championships each of the past three years. The NU rifle team has produced a pair of top-six NCAA finishes in the last three years, while the men’s and women’s tennis teams both earned NCAA Tournament trips in 2010. The women won the first NCAA match in school history while the men made their first-ever tournament appearance. The Husker softball team has made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, while the baseball and women’s golf teams both earned NCAA Regional bids in 2008.

In addition to their competitive success, the Huskers have continued to set high standards academically at both the conference and national levels. Nebraska led the Big 12 with eight CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2009-10, increasing NU’s nation-leading total to 277 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans all-time, across all sports. The Huskers also led the Big 12 with a league-record 178 academic all-conference selections, along with a conference-record 687 Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selections. NU graduated 121 student-athletes from August of 2009 through May of 2010, while increasing its Big 12-leading exhausted eligibility graduation rate to 94 percent.

The Huskers also have continued to set the standard on the national level in the area of life skills. In 2010-11, Nebraska will open its new Student Life Center, which is designed to help Husker student-athletes maximize their performance in the classroom and the community.

The Student Life Center is the first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s athletic facilities. In the summer of 2010, the athletic department broke ground on the Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, which will directly benefit the men’s and women’s basketball and wrestling programs with new practice and team areas. The project is also expected to lead to additional opportunities for improved facilities for many other Husker Olympic sport programs. The Hendricks Training Complex is scheduled

to open before the 2011-12 season.

In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on the 16,000-seat Haymarket Arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14.

Not long after the historic vote in Lincoln, Osborne helped Chancellor Harvey Perlman announce an even more historic move with the shift

by Nebraska from the Big 12 to the Big Ten Conference beginning in 2011-12.

Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten is expected to add University-wide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come.

Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to Nebraska as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006.

He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years.

Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991.

TeamMates provides encouragement to school-aged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education.

Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season.

In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory three-year waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998.

Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons.

Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games.

In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football Academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history.

Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska’s Athletic Director from 1967 to 1993.

Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren.

PAT LOGSDON SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon was promoted to senior woman administrator on March 7, 2008, in addition to her duties as associate athletic director for administration. She previously served in the role of assistant athletic director.

Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office; oversight in the areas of administration, athletic medicine, nutrition, football operations, softball, women’s gymnastics and rifle; developing and implementing administrative policies and procedures, assisting with strategic planning, reviewing and maintaining game and coaching contracts and oversight of the administrative budget.

Previously, Logsdon spent six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations.

Logsdon served three years as assistant to the director of football operations and 14 seasons as the football recruiting secretary.

Logsdon received a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1989.

Associate Athletic Director Bob Burton joined the Nebraska athletic department in 1998. He spent 10 years as associate athletic director for compliance/sports administration from 1998 to 2007.

Burton is responsible for the direct administrative supervision to the sports of golf, tennis, men’s gymnastics, track and field, cross country, bowling, wrestling and swimming and diving. He also oversees the operation of Haymarket Park.

Working with the Lincoln Saltdogs, he helps set the budget for field and stadium operation costs and create strategic plans for the facility.

Burton is a member of the athletic department’s executive team, which helps set policy, develops short- and long-term goals and objectives, and creates strategic plans for the department. Burton has expanded his responsibilities by assisting the development office in areas of fundraising and building relationships with athletic department supporters.

Burton filled a similar position at Oklahoma State as the assistant athletic director for sports administration and compliance from 1993 to 1997. He oversaw OSU’s Olympic sports programs as well as the training and strength and conditioning, wrestling, men’s and women’s track and field and men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Burton came to Nebraska from Texas Tech, where he served as an associate athletic director for compliance for one

year. While at Texas Tech, Burton helped complete the NCAA investigation into the Red Raider athletic department and analyzed the entire compliance system at the institution. He also helped identify and implement financial aid and eligibility systems, including changes in personnel and restructuring of the compliance department.

Burton, who was a member of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer committee for three years and was a member of the NCAA Division I bowling committee, served as a legislative administrator for the NCAA from 1989 to 1993. At the NCAA, he was involved in the development of legislation, interpretation of regulations and reviewed legal issues related to the application of the association’s regulations. He served as an NCAA liaison to committees and conducted comprehensive education to several intercollegiate athletic conferences. He has served on the National Association of Athletic Compliance Coordinators Executive Committee and the subcommittee of Big 12 Directors of Compliance.

He received his bachelor’s degree in finance from Nebraska in 1985 and his juris doctorate from the Nebraska College of Law in 1989. A native of Falls City, Neb., Burton and his wife, Krista, have a daughter, Elly, and sons Robert Falk, McClain John and Abram Lawslo.

2011 OUTLOOK The lone senior on Nebraska’s 2010-11 roster, Abby Buxton looks to give her career with the Huskers a strong finish. Buxton has been a constant source of leadership in the program and will be expected to continue in that role this season. “Abby is one of the most genuine, positive and optimistic young women I have ever coached,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said.

2009-10: JUNIOR Buxton spent her season primarily in a backup role for the Huskers, where she saw action at the No. 5 and 6 positions. Her overall singles record on the season came to 4-7, while she posted a combined doubles record of 1-4 on the season. Her singles wins included capturing first place at the Minnesota Invitational in the Wild Singles Flight during the fall.

2008-09: SOPHOMORE Buxton was a valuable backup for the Huskers in singles play, as she went 3-1 in four spring matches during the season, all at the No. 6 position. She went 1-1 in Big 12 play, beating Iowa State’s Alyssa Palen in Nebraska’s 5-2 victory over the Cyclones. Buxton also had two singles victories in the fall to give her five overall during the season. She went 2-0 in the spring in doubles matches as well.

Buxton was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters in 2008-09, given to players who achieve at least a 3.0 grade-point average during the semester.

2007-08: FRESHMAN Buxton had a solid freshman season for the Huskers, filling in at the No. 6 spot during the spring season and posting a 6-2 record, including a 1-2 Big 12 mark. Buxton was dominant during Nebraska’s nonconference schedule, winning all five of her matches in straight sets. Buxton did not allow an opponent to win more than three games in any of those five straightset non-conference victories. Buxton outscored her opponents by a 60-18 margin in her six victories, all in straight sets.

Buxton was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall semester, one of six players named to the list.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Buxton attended Eden Prairie High School before coming to Nebraska. She was the Section 2AA champion twice while finishing runner-up once. She was ranked as high as 150th in the National 18’s. Buxton was a section 2AA allconference selection all four years of high school. An outstanding student, Buxton carried a 3.9 GPA throughout her high school career and was a DECA state qualifier.

PERSONAL Abby was born July 29, 1989, in Eden Prairie, Minn. She is the daughter of Rex and Susan Buxton.

She has one sister, Maddie, 13. She is majoring in finance and may attend law school.

Madeleine Geibert enters the 2011 season as one of Nebraska’s top returners in both disciplines. Geibert was an All-Big 12 selection in Singles and Doubles in 2010 and hopes to make a similar impact this year. “Madeleine has played some incredible tennis in her first two years in the program,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “She shows her passion for her teammates by the way in which she practices.”

2009-10: SOPHOMORE Geibert saw her successes continue in her second season with the Huskers, as she posted a spring singles record of 16-10. She played primarily at the No. 1 or No. 2 positions throughout the spring, though she also posted a 2-0 record at the No. 3 spot. Geibert also led the team in singles wins in the fall with an impressive 10-4 record. At the end of her sophomore campaign, Geibert was named to the All-Big 12 Singles team for her achievements on the court.

Geibert was also one of NU’s top doubles competitors in 2010. She paired with Stefanie Weinstein for much of the spring, and the duo posted a 14-8 record at the No. 1 doubles spot. Geibert and Weinstein had an excellent fall season as well, going 5-1 and capturing the Timblerwolves Doubles Flight championship at the Minnesota Invitational in September. Geibert’s 24 doubles wins earned her a spot in the record books for single-season doubles victories at Nebraska. The pair was recognized for their skill by being named to the AllBig 12 Doubles team at the end of the season.

Geibert ended the season with 50 combined wins, earning her a tie at the No. 2 spot for season combined victories in the Nebraska record books. She was an academic All-Big 12 selection and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.

2008-09: FRESHMAN Geibert had no trouble adjusting to Division I and Big 12 Conference tennis, as Coach Jacobson plugged her into the top of the singles lineup right away in her freshman season. Geibert spent the entire season at either the No. 1 or No. 2 singles spots, and came away with a 15-5 record during the spring season. She led the team with 11 singles wins at the No. 1 spot, and was a perfect 4-0 at the No. 2 spot. She also won 11 singles matches in the fall, giving her 26 total singles wins on the year, good for third on the team behind Mary Weatherholt and Wiveca Swarting. Geibert had the most three-set matches on the team with eight, coming out on top in five.

Geibert was also excellent on the doubles court as well, teaming with Jana Albers for the majority of the season at the No. 1 doubles spot. The duo led the team with 13 doubles wins during the spring, while Geibert led the team individually with 21 doubles wins on the year.

Geibert was also a standout in the classroom her freshman year, earning spots on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters. She was also named an ITA Scholar Athlete, awarded to individuals who achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher during the year.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Geibert came to Lincoln after an outstanding career in the Women’s division in Germany, where she was ranked as high as No. 63 in the country.

Geibert was the highest-ranked German player that the Huskers had ever recruited.

PERSONAL Madeleine was born on Aug. 30, 1989, in Heidelberg, Germany. She is the daughter of Gerhard and Monika Geibert. Madeleine is a biology major at Nebraska.

2009-10: SOPHOMORE Holmberg had a breakout season in 2009-10, as she put together an overall singles record of 23-10. Coach Jacobson plugged her in the Nos. 4-6 positions in the Huskers’ singles lineup and Holmberg shined with a team-leading 21 wins in the spring. She capped her season when she captured the Big 12 No. 6 singles championship.

Holmberg also found success on the doubles court for NU, where she posted a record of 24-9 on the season. Holmberg found her stride at the No. 3 position alongside Mary Weatherholt, where the duo accumulated a record of 13-3, including a 9-1 Big 12 mark. In April, Holmberg and Weatherholt were the Big 12 No. 3 doubles champions.

Holmberg was an academic All-Big 12 selection in 2010, and was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters.

2008-09: FRESHMAN Holmberg was a solid contributor for the Husker squad as a freshman in 2008-09. Her eight singles wins during the spring tied her for eighth on the team, and she also racked up 11 doubles wins in the spring. Holmberg spent the year rotating between the Nos. 4-6 positions on the singles court. She found most of her success at the No. 5 spot, where she totaled four wins, and was also unbeaten in two matches at the No. 4 spot.

Holmberg played her best tennis during one of the most crucial stretches for Nebraska, as her victory over Alisa Buslaieva of Oklahoma State propelled Nebraska to a 4-3 victory. That team win stopped a five-match losing streak for Nebraska, jump-starting a finish for the Huskers in which they would win six of their final eight matches.

Holmberg was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters in 2008-09, earning a perfect 4.0 GPA during both semesters. She was also named an ITA Scholar Athlete, awarded to those who achieve at least a 3.5 GPA during the year.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Holmberg was one of the top youth players in Finland before joining the Husker squad. She participated in the European Championships three times, and was a runner-up in the Finland national championship three times in singles play. She won doubles championships three times, once each in the 14’s, 16’s and 18’s divisions. Holmberg played at Tammertors High School before coming to Lincoln.

PERSONAL Jennifer was born on Dec. 19, 1988, in Valkcakoski, Finland, and is the daughter of Axel and Benita Holmberg. Jennifer has one sister, Merete, and one brother, Klos. She is a business administration major at Nebraska.

Entering her junior season, Mary Weatherholt is already one of the most accomplished players in Nebraska women’s tennis history. She looks to build on her record-breaking career in 2011 and is on pace to break into the top five all-time at Nebraska in career singles wins and career combined wins. “Mary has an opportunity over the next couple of years to be considered the best player in Nebraska history,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “She is a true giver to her teammates and to the community.”

2009-10: SOPHOMORE Weatherholt continued her quest to become one of the best players in Nebraska history in 2009-10.

Her season record of 26-6 gave her a season winning percentage of .812 and placed her No. 5 in the Nebraska record books. Weatherholt is 62-10 all-time at Nebraska, putting her at No. 1 in career singles winning percentage with a mark of .861.

Weatherholt spent the season at the No. 1 or 2 positions, capturing 20 singles wins in the spring. She earned a spot on the All-Big 12 singles team for the second consecutive year.

Weatherholt also had a stellar season in doubles, where she played much of the season at the No. 3 position with Jennifer Holmberg. The duo’s 13 wins were second-best on the team, and their 9-1 Big 12 mark led the Huskers. In April, Weatherholt and Holmberg captured the Big 12 No. 3 doubles championship.

Weatherholt earned academic All-Big 12 honors in the spring and was a Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection in the fall and spring semesters.

2008-09: FRESHMAN Weatherholt turned in one of the best individual seasons in Nebraska history as a freshman in 200809. She started by winning a pair of fall tournaments, including the singles title at the Midland Invitational, on her way to a 16-2 fall singles record. Weatherholt carried her fantastic fall into the beginning of the spring season. She won her first 11 singles matches, the first 10 of those in straight sets.

Weatherholt suffered her only two losses of the spring season after her 11-0 start, falling to Baylor’s Jelena Stanivuk and Texas A&M’s Morgan Frank. But she rallied to win her final nine matches of the season, giving her a 20-2 spring singles record. She capped the season by being named Big 12 Freshman of the Year, and also earned a spot on the All-Big 12 singles team. Weatherholt’s singles record of 36-4 set the NU single-season record for singles wins, bettering the previous record of 30 set by Sandra Noetzel in 199899. Weatherholt’s 50 combined wins ranked second all-time at NU, falling one short of Doneta Holmen’s record of 51 wins set in 1989-90.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Weatherholt was the top-ranked player in the state of Kansas after playing her high school tennis at Shawnee Mission South. She was the 2006 Class 6A singles champion and was ranked as high as No. 28 in the nation in the 18-and-under division. Weatherholt is the highest-ranked American-born

player to ever play tennis at Nebraska.

PERSONAL Mary was born on Aug. 2, 1991, in Kansas City, Mo. She is the daughter of Nancy Weatherholt and Reynold Simpson. Mary has two brothers, Rob Simpson and Will Simpson. She is a business administration major.

2011 OUTLOOK After fighting injuries in her freshman year, Chelsea Finnegan looks to become a solid contributor for Nebraska in 2011. “Chelsea fits the mold of a true Husker and believes whole-heartedly in the philosophy of our program,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “We believe that with good health Chelsea’s upside is tremendous.”

2009-10: FRESHMAN Injuries put a damper on Finnegan’s freshman season at Nebraska, though she was still able to play in four matches during the fall and spring for NU. In the spring, Finnegan saw action in two matches for NU, including a thrilling three-set victory over Wichita State’s Iasmine Carpen to clinch Nebraska’s 4-3 team victory. Finnegan’s second and final match of the spring resulted in a loss against Arkansas-Little Rock.

Finnegan was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and spring semester.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Finnegan was a three-time district champion at Broward Virtual School in Broward, Fla. She was also a part of a regional champion team in 2007 and was a Florida state doubles champion. Finnegan was named first-team AllBroward County and was ranked in the top 30 in the New England section.

PERSONAL Chelsea was born Aug. 6, 1991, in Las Vegas, Nev. She is the daughter of Charles and Diane Finnegan. Chelsea has two sisters, Ashley, who was a three-year letterwinner at Nebraska (2007-09), and Caitlin. Chelsea is majoring in elementary education at Nebraska.

2011 OUTLOOK After sitting out last season for the Huskers, Patricia Veresova is ready to get back on the court and compete in 2011. “Patricia has had a lot of time off since beginning to compete this fall,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “She is incredibly gifted and a tremendous asset to our Husker family.”

2009-10: FRESHMAN Veresova sat out her freshman season at Nebraska due to NCAA eligibility rules.

She earned spots on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Veresova was the winner of the Slovakian women’s championships in both singles and doubles in 2009. She has been ranked as high as No. 529 in the world by the WTA. PERSONAL Patricia was born in Piestany, Slovakia, on May 31, 1989. She is the daughter of Pavol Veres and Lydia Veresov, and has one brother, Pavol. Patricia is a marketing major at Nebraska.

JANINE WEINREICH SOPHOMORE • TESPE, GERMANY (GYMNASIUM)

2011 OUTLOOK

Janine Weinreich had a solid freshman season for Nebraska, compiling a 13-8 record at the No. 5 and 6 singles positions. The Huskers hope to see continued improvement from her in 2010-11. “Janine has a very solid all around game and is a tremendous doubles player as well,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “I believe she is on the verge of raising her game to the next level.”

2009-10: FRESHMAN In addition to her 13-8 mark at Nos. 5-6 singles, Weinreich paired with Wiveca Swarting in doubles, and the duo became a mainstay for Nebraska at the No. 2 position. Their record of 10-8 included an impressive 7-3 mark in Big 12 action.

Weinreich earned a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the spring semester.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Weinreich was ranked as high as No. 94 in the women’s division in Germany before Year coming to Lincoln. She was the second top-100 2009-10 German player to commit to the Huskers in her TOTALS class, joining Stefanie Weinstein.

STEFANIE WEINSTEIN SOPHOMORE• MUCH, GERMANY (WUEMBRECHT)

2011 OUTLOOK Stefanie Weinstein capped off last season as an All-Big 12 Doubles selection, and looks to continue with that success in the upcoming season. “Stefanie is a tough competitor and heavy hitter off of the baseline,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “Her commitment to our program this fall has been incredible and she has demonstrated tremendous leadership capabilities.”

2009-10: FRESHMAN Weinstein was one of Nebraska’s top competitors in 2009-10, as she compiled an overall record of 18-14 that included 13 wins during the spring season. Weinstein played almost exclusively at the No. 4 position, where she accumulated six conference wins for the Huskers.

Weinstein was also one of NU’s strongest doubles players. She competed alongside Madeleine Geibert all season at the No. 1 position and the duo gathered a team-high 14 wins. Weinstein was rewarded for her excellent season when she was named to the All-Big 12 doubles team at the conclusion of 2010.

Weinstein also excelled academically, earning a spot on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

BEFORE NEBRASKA Weinstein played for the German club team Bayer-Leverkusen while she attended Wuembrecht High School in Tespe, Germany.

She was ranked as high as No. 41 in the German national rankings.

PERSONAL Stefanie was born on Sept. 16, 1989, in Bergisch-Gladbach, Germany. She is the daughter of Herbert and Erika Weinstein.

Stefanie is majoring in business administration at Nebraska.

FREDERIKE PUTTHOFF FRESHMAN • DINKLAGE, GERMANY (GYMNASIUM LOHNE)

2011 OUTLOOK Frederike Putthoff joins the Huskers as one of the highest ranked players ever recruited out of Germany, and looks to make an immediate impact with the team. “Frederike embodies the spirit of the program and the concept of team,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “She is going to be a selfless contributor to our Husker family.”

BEFORE NEBRASKA Frederike Putthoff hails from Germany, where she played tennis and attended Gymnasium Lohne. She was ranked as high as No. 44 in the German Women’s rankings, making her one of the highest ranked players from Germany ever to play at Nebraska. She was also invited to play several times in the prestigious German Junior Championships.

PERSONAL Frederike was born July 4, 1990 in Lohne, Germany. She is the daughter of Waltraud Putthoff and Axel Posledni. Frederike is a psychology major at Nebraska.

MAIKE ZEPPERNICK FRESHMAN • HAMBURG, GERMANY (GYMNASIUM BUCKHORN)

2011 OUTLOOK Freshman Maike Zeppernick will be aiming to crack the starting singles and doubles lineups this season. “Maike has been a tremendous role model for our program even though she is just a freshman,” Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. “Her work ethic is exemplary and her attitude is always positive.”

BEFORE NEBRASKA Zeppernick played tennis in Germany while she attended high school at Gymnasium Buckhorn in Hamburg. She was ranked as high as No. 104 in the German national rankings.

PERSONAL Maike hails from Hamburg, Germany, where she was born on Feb. 17, 1991. She is the daughter of Henry and Birgit Zeppernick and has one brother, Tore, 18. Maike has not yet declared a major at NU.

2009-10 SEASON REVIEW A school-record 22 wins, the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament victory, a third-place regular-season Big 12 finish, and a host of postseason awards highlighted the 2009-10 Nebraska women’s tennis season.

The 2009-10 Nebraska women’s tennis season was one for the record books, as the Huskers put together one of the most impressive seasons in program history. The team posted a record of 22-6 overall and finished the season ranked 35th in the nation.

The Huskers began their year strong in the fall, attending tournaments that spanned from Texas to Minnesota. The team posted a combined record of 38-28 in singles and doubles action and captured two individual titles at the Minnesota Invitational in September. Senior Abby Buxton took first in the Wild Singles Flight, while junior Madeleine Geibert and freshman Stefanie Weinstein won the Timberwolves Doubles Flight. Geibert led the way for the Huskers in the fall, earning a combined record of 17-6, while Weinstein added a record of 11-7 in singles and doubles play.

Nebraska’s fall play helped the Huskers transition into an outstanding start in the spring.

The Huskers began the season with 10 wins, marking the third consecutive season that Nebraska has started at least 10-0. Their victories included sweeps of Air Force, Drake and Eastern Michigan and victories over ranked opponents Wichita State and Minnesota.

The team did not lose until Feb. 28, when the Huskers fell at the hands of 42nd-ranked Tulsa in Lincoln. After a short break, the Huskers opened Big 12 play on a positive note, sweeping 52ndranked Colorado on March 12 and Missouri just two days later.

The Huskers went on the road for the first time in California to take on Long Beach State and UC-Irvine in mid-March. Nebraska lost its second match of the season against 53rd-ranked Long Beach State. Though NU was able to capture wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots, they experienced uncharacteristic struggles in singles and could not pull out a victory against the 49ers.

The team regrouped and captured a close win over UC-Irvine by a score of 4-3, sweeping the doubles matches against the Anteaters.

Nebraska then returned home to close the conference slate, reeling off four straight victories over Big 12 opponents including a sweep of neighboring foe Kansas State. Mid-April brought about Nebraska’s toughest stretch of the schedule, as the Huskers would face five ranked opponents in less than two weeks. No. 1 Baylor

and No. 20 Texas handed the Huskers their final two regular-season losses in consecutive matches. Despite being on the road for their final three matches, NU pulled off victories in all three to finish Big 12 regularseason competition at 9-2 to earn a No. 3 seed in the Big 12 championships, a tie for the highest finish ever by the Big Red. After a bye in the first round of the Big 12 championships, Nebraska swept Texas Tech to advance to the semifinals in Austin. The next match pitted the Huskers against No. 2 seeded Texas, and the Longhorns grabbed wins in No. 1 and No. 2 singles en route to a sweep of the Huskers.

Despite the loss, Nebraska’s outstanding regular season earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska faced No. 22 Illinois in the first round of the tournament in Evanston, Ill. The Huskers captured the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win, a 4-2 victory over the Fighting Illini. NU advanced to the second round to face No. 5 Northwestern.

The Wildcats held serve on their home court to end Nebraska’s record-setting season.

Nebraska collected a bevy of honors, including Scott Jacobson’s second career Big 12 Coach-of -the-Year award. Assistant Coach Hayden Perez added his second career ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year award. Four Huskers also earned academic All-Big 12 honors, including senior Wiveca Swarting and sophomores Madeleine Geibert, Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg. Geibert and freshman Stefanie Weinstein were named to the AllBig 12 doubles team, while Geibert and Weatherholt snagged spots on the All-Big 12 singles team.

The team played its way into the Nebraska record books in 2009-10, setting a record for most team wins in a season with 22. Geibert’s 50 combined wins tied her for second on Nebraska’s season combined wins list, while her 24 doubles victories on the year put her at fourth all-time at Nebraska. Geibert and Weinstein’s 19 doubles wins during the season was the fourthmost in NU women’s tennis history. Weatherholt’s career singles record of 62-10 gave her a winning percentage of .861, the best in school history, and her 2009-10 singles record of 26-6 gave her a winning percentage of .812, good for fifth all-time.

THE BIG 12 CONFERENCE

The Big 12 Conference has established a consistent level of national success on the field and in the classroom as it enters its 15th season in 2010-11.

Since it began play in 1996-97, the conference can boast 38 team crowns and 440 individual NCAA Championships.

Big 12 squads enjoyed a strong year across the board in 2009-10. Oklahoma State won the NCAA men’s cross country title while Texas captured the national championship in men’s swimming and diving. Texas A&M secured men’s and women’s outdoor track and field championships, and the Big 12 had the No. 1 team in the nation at some point during the 2009-10 season in nine different sports.

Five Big 12 volleyball teams, including perennial national power Nebraska, competed in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Championships in 2010, the first time that has happened in conference history. The Big 12 also had a school play for the BCS National Championship (Texas) for the seventh season. Oklahoma finished second nationally at the NCAA women’s gymnastics finals - an all-time high for the Big 12 - while Oklahoma State placed second at the men’s golf championship. Iowa State was third at the NCAA wrestling championships and the Big 12 also placed a team in the College World Series in both softball (Missouri) and baseball (Oklahoma).

The individual honors also continued, as Jenny Barringer (Colorado) earned The Bowerman Award, presented for the first time to the most outstanding collegiate women’s track and field athlete. In fact, all three women’s finalists were from the Big 12. Caroline Hedwall (Oklahoma State) was named the recipient of the Honda Sports Award as the nation’s top female golfer after capturing the NCAA individual title. Lisa Koll (Iowa State) earned the Honda Award as the top collegiate female athlete in track and field.

During the past six seasons a total of 16 NCAA trophies have been hoisted

by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the conference, including each of the past 13 seasons.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

Sarah Pavan (Nebraska) earned countless accolades for her work away from competition, being named the Academic All-America of the Year for all sports in both 2006-07 and 2007-08. She was also named recipient of the prestigious 2006-07 Honda-Broderick Award as Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year, the first athlete since the Big 12 was formed to earn the accolade.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and academic AllBig 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships at the end of each academic year. A total of 249 scholars have received over $1.6 million in postgraduate financial aid.

The Big 12 sponsors 21 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis and volleyball.

In 2010-11, conference schools include Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 46 million people and television households in 18 of the top 100 markets within its geographic footprint.

The conference conducts championships for 19 of its 21 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12 football championship game earns the league’s berth into the Bowl Championship Series.

In its first 14 years, the conference has distributed more than $1.2 billion to its 12 member institutions. The conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

MADELEINE GEIBERT IS A THREE-TIME ALL-BIG 12 SELECTION IN SINGLES AND DOUBLES PLAY, AND WAS AN ACADEMIC ALL-BIG 12 SELECTION IN 2009-10.

The Nebraska women’s tennis team has a bright future ahead after achieving one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2009-10.

With a school-record 22 wins under their belt and three current players on school-record lists, the Huskers are poised to take their place as a contender on the national scene.

Nebraska is one of the nation’s best public universities, and student-athletes at NU receive unparalleled academic support during their time in Lincoln. The Life Skills program provides Huskers with opportunities to give back to communities and grow as individuals.

Nebraska student-athletes also have access to some of the finest athletic training and competitive facilities in the nation, and NU will continue to expand and improve venues in order to meet the needs of student-athletes.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

The success of Nebraska student-athletes reaches far beyond athletic competition. Husker student-athletes have been selected to a nation-leading 279 CoSIDA Academic All-America teams, as Nebraska continues to set the standard for the approximately 1,400 NCAA member institutions. The Husker football team leads all individual sport programs in the nation with 99 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. The NU volleyball progam has captured more academic All-America awards (37) than any other women’s team in the nation, while the Husker softball program ranks second on that list with 27 selections. In addition to individual academic recognition, NU has led the Big 12 in graduation rates in 11 of the conference’s first 15 years.

HUSKERS EXPAND ACADEMIC TRADITION IN 2009-10 Husker student-athletes produced another stellar year at the University of Nebraska, continuing NU’s tradition of academic success. Nebraska has increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports to 279 with a Big 12-leading eight honorees in 2009-10, while also setting conference records with 178 academic All-Big 12 selections and 687 selections to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll during the year.

Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year Kelsey Griffin, the first Husker in history to win the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in any sport, capped a stellar career by earning a $7,500 Dr. Prentice Gautt Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship. A unanimous first-team AllAmerican and the 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year, Griffin powered the Nebraska women’s basketball team to the Big 12 regular-season title, which included the only unbeaten regular season in conference history at 29-0. Craig Brester claimed NU’s Male Student-Athleteof-the-Year honor, while joining Griffin as a recipient of a Big 12 Postgraduate Scholarship.

Brester, a three-time wrestling All-American, closed his career with a 109-21 record , including two NCAA runner-up finishes.

Husker volleyball star Kori Cooper, a two-time honorable-mention All-American on the court, became NU’s 60th two-time academic All-American by earning first-team honors in 2009.

Joining Cooper as a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2009-10 was Nebraska baseball centerfielder D.J. Belfonte and Nicholas Gordon, the 2009 NCAA indoor long jump champion and three-time All-American.

Across all sports, Nebraska student-athletes claimed a Big 12-leading 178 academic All-Big 12 selections, including an astounding 152 first-team academic All-Big 12 honorees. The Huskers had 24 more first-team selections than any other Big 12 school had selected to both the first and second teams. Over the past two years, Nebraska has claimed 350 academic All-Big 12 certificates across all sports, while no other Big 12 school has accumulated 250 honors. NU student-athletes also earned a record-setting 687 spots on the Big 12 Commissioner’s Fall and Spring Academic Honor Rolls.

The hard work, dedication and commitment of Nebraska’s student-athletes in the classroom resulted in 121 current or former student-athletes earning degrees from August of 2009 through May of 2010. The Huskers continued to set the graduation standard among Big 12 Conference schools by increasing their Exhausted Eligibility Graduation Rate to 95 percent.

Each spring Nebraska hosts an Academic Awards Banquet to honor student-athletes who have earned either a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA or have earned a 3.0 or higher GPA in the previous calendar year. Last spring, 278 student-athletes were honored.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers.

Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 70 tutors addressing all subject areas.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.

STUDY HALL

There are two facets to the study hall program at Nebraska. Student-athletes either attend a structured study hall, typically two hours in length held four days a week, or have flex time where they study a specific number of hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff.

MENTORING

Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement.

Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

MULTI-CULTURAL PROGRAMS

Designed to enhance cultural awareness, staff members concentrate efforts on issues of transition, adjustment and retention for students of color, international students and women.

These support programs include Ladies First, International Night and Your Degree First. Your Degree First is a program designed to assist, motivate and promote minority student-athletes in pursuing the degree of their choice.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete.

Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska.

Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with nearly 60 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.

LIFE SKILLS

The Nebraska Life Skills program provides education, resources and support through college and beyond to best prepare Husker student-athletes for life after sports. Services will foster transition, retention, responsible decision-making, leadership, volunteerism and career development.

Nebraska has long been considered a pioneer in life skills support and programming. In 1998, Nebraska was one of five Division I schools nationally to win the prestigious Program of Excellence Award recognizing a strong commitment to total person development. In 2005, Keith Zimmer, Associate A.D. for Life Skills, was the recipient of the Dr. Gene Hooks Award recognizing him as the top life skills administrator in the country.

PROACTIVE EDUCATION

HUSKER LIFE SEMINAR – All incoming student-athletes complete a 16-week fall semester seminar addressing a variety of life skills topics ranging from leadership to money to relationships and study skills. TEAM WORKSHOPS – Campus and community experts facilitate team-specific life skills education workshops. STUDENT-ATHLETE ASSEMBLIES – Meetings featuring remarks from Athletic Director Tom Osborne and nationally recognized life skills trainers.

PERSONALIZED SUPPORT/INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS

RESUME DEVELOPMENT – Each student-athlete works individually with a life skills staff member to create a personalized resume with periodic follow-up meetings to make updates through graduation. GAME PLAN CREATION – Life skills counselors will create a “Game Plan for Life” outlining specific goals and objectives to be completed to enhance marketability prior to college graduation. SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY/PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT – Sports psychology resources are available to assist with performance enhancement.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Nebraska student-athletes combine to impact over 100,000 people statewide on an annual basis. TEAM SERVICE REQUIREMENT – Each team participates in a minimum of two service projects per year. SCHOOL OUTREACH – Individuals participate in numerous school outreach campaigns in both classroom and assembly settings. HOSPITAL VISITS – Huskers are frequent hospital visitors providing cheer and encouragement to a variety of patients. MONDAYS MATTER – Monday evening outreach to various local community agencies placing athletics in the proper perspective. MISCELLANEOUS OUTREACH – Outreach requests are received daily from the entire state requesting involvement from Husker student-athletes. MENTORING PROGRAMS – Typically requires one hour of service per week serving as a youth mentor.

LEADERSHIP/CITIZENSHIP

Life Skills promotes leadership development and provides recognition opportunities for extraordinary citizenship. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE – Elected team representatives from each of the 23 sports serve as the “voice” of the entire studentathlete population discussing student-athlete welfare, legislation and service events. YOUR DEGREE FIRST – Leadership group providing programming and specialized support to student-athletes of color, women and international student-athletes. HERO LEADERSHIP AWARD – Individual recognition to Huskers who have consistently went above and beyond serving as an exemplary role-model. BROOK BERRINGER CITIZENSHIP TEAM – Annual “Good Works” team honoring football players for dedicated service in memory of late Husker Brook Berringer. LIFE SKILLS AWARD OF EXCELLENCE – Presented to the single men’s and women’s team who scores the highest point total in the year long life skills team competition.

CAREER COMMITMENT

In addition to the creation of a personalized resume and game plan, extensive career resources are available to every Husker. STUDENT-ATHLETE CAREER FAIR – Attended by approximately 25 companies. NETWORKING/NEXPO NIGHT – Former Huskers and every UNL college educate student-athletes about major and career options. ASSESSMENTS – On-line assessments to help individuals discover talents and match with a major and career. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE – Programs in place to facilitate shadowing and internship placements. JOB PREPARATION – Expert advice on cover letter writing, interviewing skills and evaluating the job offer.

POSTGRADUATE ASSISTANCE

Commitment to helping student-athletes pursue postgraduate plans and scholarships.

CAREER NIGHTS – Learn from the experts to gain valuable insight on timelines, application procedures, entrance requirements, personal essays and more. SCHOLARSHIPS – Seniors in their final season of athletic eligibility can apply for numerous postgraduate awards.

The new Nebraska Student Life Complex opened after receiving an $8.7 million expansion and renovation in 2010. The Student Life Complex, which includes the Hewit Academic Center (top left), the DJ Sokol Enrichment Center (bottom right), and the Abbott Life Skills Center (top) tripled the size of NU’s previous academic support area for student-athletes.

NATIONAL POWERS One of the nation’s premier athletic programs, Nebraska is dedicated to and successful in all 23 of its varsity sports. Nebraska has won a total of 24 team national championships since 1970, including a fifth bowling crown in 2008, eight men’s gymnastics titles, five football championships, three volleyball titles and three women’s track and field championships. In 200910, six Husker teams finished among the top 10 in their respective sports.

The Huskers finished the year ranked 17th in the final NACDA Directors Cup all-sport standings, their highest overall finish since taking 13th in 2000-01.

NU had 15 teams advance to NCAA Tournament action in 2009-10, and the Husker football team won a 2009 Holiday Bowl crown. The bowling team produced an NCAA runner-up finish, while National Coach-of-theYear Connie Yori’s women’s basketball team finished fourth - the best showing in school history. NU’s tradition-rich volleyball program added a No. 5 final national ranking, while the rifle team finished sixth at the 2010 NCAA Championships. The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team added a seventhplace NCAA finish, while men’s gymnastics rounded out NU’s six top-10 team finishes by placing ninth.

Year honors, captured the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award while being named a Heisman Trophy finalist. He also became the first Husker to win both the Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards, before being selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. All-American Kelsey Griffin also claimed national headlines while leading the women’s basketball team to a record-setting season. The 6-2 forward was a finalist for every major national player-of-the-year award and became Nebraska’s first-ever winner across all sports of the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award, recognizing her success in competition, in the classroom and in the community. The 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year was a unanimous first-team All-American and picked No. 3 overall in the 2010 WNBA Draft.

All-American Cassandra Leuthold also captured 2010 National Player-of-theYear honors while leading the bowling team to an NCAA runner-up finish.

Overall, 29 Nebraska student-athletes captured 33 All-America awards in their respective sports, including NCAA 197-pound runner-up Craig Brester, who helped the wrestling team to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Sophomore center Jorge Brian Diaz returns as the Huskers’ leading rebounder and shot blocker and second-leading scorer for the 2010-11 season. Last year, Diaz set a Nebraska freshman record for blocked shots and also ranked among the top 10 freshman in NU history for scoring, rebounding and games started.

On June 11, 2010, the Big Ten Conference announced that its member schools voted unanimously to accept the University of Nebraska as the conference’s 12th member beginning on July 1, 2011. The Big Ten Conference is a union of 11 world-class academic institutions – 12 beginning in 2011-12 – who share a common mission of research, graduate, professional and undergraduate teaching and public service. The conference’s 100-plus years of history, strong tradition of competitive intercollegiate athletic programs, vast and passionate alumni base, and consistent leadership in innovations position the Big Ten and its entire community firmly on the Big Stage.

ebraska’s women’s tennis program has established itself as a national contender. Last season, the Huskers advancerd to the second round of the NCAA Championships, their third NCAA trip in the past six years.

Head Coach Scott Jacobson, who is in his 20th season, is the winningest coach in Nebraska tennis history. Since 1992, Nebraska women’s tennis players have earned 26 first-team All-Big 12 awards and 66 academic all-conference awards, including 49 first-team selections.
