Khilafat
SPECIAL EDITION
In a Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa we learn that after every Prophet, the institution of Successorship is established to continue the work of the Prophet. This vicegerency, or Khilafat, is divinely guided— and this is what makes the Khilafat we have today so blessed. We receive guidance from God Almighty through the Khalifah of the time. For 113 years the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has been honoured with this special grace, benefitting in ways that no publication could ever encompass. However, we would like to take this opportunity to attempt to present a small glimpse of the immense impact that Khilafat has had on the personal lives of Khuddam and the Majlis as a whole.

The Promised Messiahas states: I came from God as a Manifestation of Divine Providence and I am a personification of His Power. And after I am gone there will be some other persons who will be the manifestation of the second Power [of God]. So, while waiting for the second Manifestation of His Power, you all together keep yourselves busy praying. And let a Jama‘at of righteous people, one and all, in every country keep themselves busy in prayers so that the second Manifestation may descend from the Heaven and show you that your God is a Mighty God.

Hazrat Huzaifara narrates that the Holy Prophetsa said: “Prophethood shall remain among you as long as God wills. He will bring about its end and follow it with Khilafat on the precepts of Prophethood for as long as He wills and then bring about its end. Kingship shall then follow to remain as long as He wills and then come to an end. There shall then be tyranny, which shall remain as long as God wills and come to an end upon His decree. There will then emerge Khilafat on the precepts of Prophethood. Then he remained silent.”

hmadi Muslims are blessed by Allah to have received the gift of Khilafat. Many people know of its importance in our Jama’at; how it is a source of leadership, a source of direction, a source of divine guidance and a source of spiritual solace. But what some don’t know or instead, don’t realise, is the countless benefits which can be attained from it. Allah has opened up so many avenues for Ahmadis to utilise Khilafat, yet whether it be through negligence due to

HOW TO WAKE UP FOR TAHAJJUD A Khadim once asked beloved Huzooraba regarding waking up for the Tahajjud prayer, to which Huzooraba replied: “Put on two to three alarms before going to sleep and keep them at some distance from yourself. But remember that the real factor is your will-power. Say to yourself before you sleep that I will wake up in the morning.”
worldly commitments, or simply through lethargy, some of us don’t take advantage of them. Khilafat is essentially a continuation of divine authority based upon the precepts of Prophethood. After the Prophet Muhammadsa, Khilafat was established that kept the teachings and foundations of Islam alive and kept its followers on the right path. Similarly, after the Promised Messiahas passed away, Khilafat was established to keep the followers of Ahmadiyyat
united and rightly guided. We must ensure that we are from among those who follow this divine leadership as it will inevitably guide us towards Allah. If you look at any other sect of Islam, they all have different sub-divisions within their sect which listen to different leaders/Imams. There is no sense of complete unity within these sects which is why the Muslim world is in a state of disarray. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is different. We have one Khalifah who makes decisions and all of us are unit-

ed under him as one. We must remember that Huzooraba is divinely guided by Allah and has a direct link to Him. Therefore, by gaining nearness to Huzooraba, we in turn gain nearness to Allah, which should always be our main focus in life. This article is a guide on the simple things which we can implement to attach ourselves to Khilafat to help us reap great rewards, not only in this life, but also the next. The first, and possibly the most important, advice is to listen to Huzoor’saba Friday Sermons. I can’t even begin to describe to you the number of useful things which can be learnt in each sermon. So much knowledge is imparted regarding every walk of life, from how to conduct yourself on a daily basis to dealing with difficult circumstances and much more. The key steps I would suggest are firstly, setting aside part of your day each week to listen to the Friday Sermon. Secondly, properly trying to understand the key teachings from each sermon (using translation if required). Thirdly, actively implementing these teachings into your daily life. The first step is probably the hardest as it requires you to give up your time which could otherwise be used in pursuing other worldly matters. Identifying that your religious and spiritual livelihood is ultimately more important to you than your current worldly livelihood is paramount to unlocking the drive you require to pursue Khilafat. Once this hurdle has been crossed, then the other steps tend to fall into place quite easily. Secondly, I urge you to write to Huzooraba on a regular basis to request for prayers. Allah listens most to those who are closest to him and Huzooraba is the closest to Allah of any person on Earth. As a result, asking Huzooraba to pray for you will help you immensely. In your letters you can also ask Huzooraba for guidance concerning any matter and he will have
the perfect answer as it will flow from a divinely inspired source. Thirdly, when possible, try to arrange mulaqats (meetings) with Huzooraba. These are extraordinarily special occasions where you get to be as close as possible to Huzooraba. Mulaqats are another opportunity to ask for guidance from Huzooraba in person as well as for prayers. Another piece of advice I’d like to give is to watch MTA as much as possible. Along with the many other educational and inspiring programmes, there are also lots of programmes involving Huzooraba that you can watch and gain knowledge from. These involve classes with members of Waqf-e-Nau and question and answer sessions. Whatever Huzooraba says is blessed and you should try to act upon it. There are many Ahmadis who have already acted upon this advice and even gone above this. They are continually receiving the benefits of Khilafat and there are lots of examples of this. Many people have reported incidents where they were in dire circumstances but, with the help and prayers of our beloved Huzooraba, were able to resolve the situation. They have inculcated a deep love and trust for Khilafat; this is a bond that, once made, can never be broken. You may ask as to how can one man help and care for so many people? The answer to that is that a Khalifah is no ordinary man. He is the man who receives the most assistance and blessings from Allah. Therefore, put your trust in him and ultimately put your trust in Allah. It’s never too late to change yourself and strengthen your bond with Khilafat. Huzooraba, with the help of Allah, will always be there for you in your darkest moments. He will listen to you, he will guide you, he will pray for you. But the fruits of this tree will only become apparent to you when you go searching for it yourself.

future of Islam, this chapter articulates the success of Islam through Khilafat: a leading light which was to become the main instrument for establishing the spiritual and political hegemony of Islam. The primary role of Khilafat is to convey the beautiful teachings of Islam to the world, which were brought to us by the Holy Prophetsa. However, this task can only be completed when people of the same faith are united their fear: They will worship Me, and they will not associate anything with Me. Then whoso is ungrateful after that, they will be the rebellious.” (Surah AlNur, Chapter 24, Verse 56) This verse of the Holy Qur’an sheds light on one of the vital Islamic principles. While the previous chapter of the Holy Qur’an emphasised the

The verse itself states that this promise will only be fulfilled when Muslims will observe prayers, offer Zakat and obey the Holy Prophetsa in all religious and temporal matters. When Muslims fulfil these conditions, only then will Khilafat be bestowed upon them and their state of fear will be replaced by security and peace. Islam will reign supreme in the world, and above all the Oneness and

Unity of God will be established in this world. However, it is our responsibility to prove ourselves worthy of the blessings of Khilafat. In 632 CE, the Muslim Ummah witnessed the blessings of Khilafat when Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqra was elected as the first Khalifah of Islam. Upon his election, he had to deal with an extremely difficult situation which developed due to the sudden demise of the Holy Prophetsa. In the beginning, some of the tribes renounced Islam, due to the fact that their tribal chiefs did not feel necessary to pledge their allegiance to Hazrat Abu Bakrra. Not only that but they made plans to attack Medina to end the institution of Khilafat. Then there were others among them who refused to pay the Zakat, which was essential for fulfilling the needs of the Islamic state and caring for the poor. An imposter by the name of Musalima Kazaab even raised a large army for commencement of hostilities towards the Islamic state. However, despite all of these difficulties Hazrat Abu Bakrra defended Islam with limited resources and Allah the Exalted granted him victory against the mischief mongers. Hazrat Abu Bakrra was also blessed with victory over two large empires of the time: the Persian Empire and the Roman Empire. During the last days of his life, the Holy Prophetsa decided to send an army of fearless warriors of Islam to battle against the Romans who had made incursions into the Northern borders. After the demise of the Holy Prophetsa, the law-and-order situation started deteriorating outside of Medina. Many notable companions of the Holy Prophetsa advised Hazrat Abu Bakrra to stand down the army that was to fight against the Romans and instead focus on the areas surrounding Medina. Hazrat Abu Bakrra replied forcefully: “What authority has the Son of Abu
Qahafah, to stop that which was started by the Holy Prophetsa”. The Muslim army, under the command of Hazrat Khalid bin Walidra left Medina and defeated the Persians and Romans in the battles of Ajnadayn and Yarmuk, and thus the whole of Syria came under the control of the Islamic state.
REGAIN CONCENTRATION DURING PRAYER Huzooraba once advised a Khadim: “to regain concentration during prayer, you should keep reciting اوعذ ابہللuntil you regain concentration.”
During his last days, Hazrat Abu Bakrra sought the advice of the companions in terms of who should be appointed as the second Khalifah of Islam. The majority of companions deemed Hazrat Umar Bin Khattabra as the second Khalifah of Islam. However, some of them argued that Hazrat Umarra was of a very strict nature and he might be hard on the Muslim Ummah. Hazrat Abu Bakrra replied that the harshness of Hazrat Umarra would vanish when he would be burdened with the responsibility. All the companions agreed and Hazrat Abu Bakrra addressed the Muslims and said: “I have continuously deliberated on who should be your Khalifah after my demise. After much contemplation and prayer, I have decided to nominate Hazrat Umar Bin Khattabra as Khalifah. So Hazrat Umar Bin Khattabra will be the Khalifah after me.” All of the companions and others agreed with Hazrat Abu Bakrra and took Bai’at of Hazrat Umarra in 634 CE after the demise of Hazrat Abu Bakrra. During the Khilafat of Hazrat Umarra, the Muslims fought a number of battles against Egypt, Iran, Iraq and Syria. This resulted in Muslims gaining control of vast areas of these countries. When the city of Jerusalem was conquered by Muslims in 17 Hijri (17th year of the Islamic Calendar), the Romans requested Hazrat Umarra to attend the city and take the keys of Jerusalem. Hazrat Umarra
established the Shura, a consultative body of advisors to the Khalifah, the finance department and building of schools and mosques in different parts of the state. He also introduced an Islamic Hijrah calendar and divided the whole Islamic state into provinces to facilitate administration. His administrative capabilities were incredibly foresighted and brought great organisation to the Muslim world. In 644 CE, Hazrat Umarra was stabbed by a Persian slave while he was offering his Prayers in the Mosque. In the time that followed this attack, Hazrat Umarra realised that his demise was imminent, therefore, he nominated six people and advised them to elect the next Khalifah from among themselves. He appointed Hazrat Miqdad bin Al-Aswadra to oversee the consultation and election process and directed him to hold the Electoral College at one place and to guard it. The six people that were selected by Hazrat Umar Bin Khattabra were Hazrat Uthmanra, Hazrat Alira, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Aufra, Hazrat Sa‘d bin Al-Waqqasra, Hazrat Zubairra, and Hazrat Talhara. In addition to them, he included his son, Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar, as advisor, but did not declare him as entitled to Khilafat. After the Electoral College, Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Aufra spoke with other Muslims and Hazrat Uthman Bin Afaanra was elected as the next Khalifah of Islam. In the time of Hazrat Uthmanra the Is-

lamic empire expanded even further and defeated Iran, Egypt and the Romans. As a result of these victories, Allah the Almighty granted the whole of Iran, Asia Minor and Egypt to the control of the Islamic Empire. It was during his Khilafat that an Islamic fleet in the form of a navy was first established. The Holy Qur’an, as we see it today, was compiled under his direct supervision. Hazrat Uthman Bin Afaanra instructed standard copies of the Holy Qur’an to be produced which were pre-

open conflict. The end result of this was the martyrdom of Hazrat Uthman Bin Afaanra on June 17, 656 CE, while he was reciting the Holy Qur’an. After the demise of Hazrat Uthman Bin Afaanra, the Companions who were present in Medina witnessed discord and conflict spreading among the Muslims. In order to resolve this matter, they approached Hazrat Alira and asked him to take the Bai’at from the Muslims—knowing that Muslims had to be united under Khilafat. Thus, Hazrat Alira became the
(The Outsiders) planned to assassinate Hazrat Alira and succeeded. Hazrat Alira was martyred in 40 Hijri and became the third Khalifah to have been martyred as a result of disorder. Undoubtedly, Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqra, Hazrat Umarra, Hazrat Uthmanra and Hazrat Alira were great leaders of the Muslim Ummah who sacrificed their own comfort for the sake of preaching the true teachings of Islam. All four were given glad tidings by the Holy Prophetsa that they would be rewarded with paradise in the hereafter. It is important to clarify that the disorder was not caused by the companions of the Holy Prophetsa. Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIra states: “The disorder that emerged during the time of Hazrat Uthmanra was not instigated by the Companions. Those who say that this mischief was caused by the Companions are mistaken. There is no doubt that many Companions stood in opposition to Hazrat Alira and many
pared from the ones that Hazrat Abu Bakrra had compiled. These copies were then sent to all the provinces of the state to ensure unity in access to Allah’s revealed Word. During the last six years of his Khilafat, various conflicts began to build in the Islamic state due to the conspiracies of certain groups including those led by Abdullah Bin Sabah, a Jew who had become a Muslim with the intention of weakening the Islamic empire. This disorder continued and grew until it led to

fourth Khalifah. Some companions were of the view that Hazrat Alira should punish the killers of Hazrat Uthmanra. He told the companions that his top priority was to restore law and order and only then would he be able to bring the murderers of Hazrat Uthmanra to justice. This difference led to further unrest in what was already becoming a divided Islamic state, owing to groups of individuals (who were in reality hypocrites) fanning the flames of disorder. This group of hypocrites known as the Khawariji
stood in opposition to Mu‘awiyahra. However, I say that the Companions were not the cause of this disorder; rather, it was those who joined [Islam] later and were not fortunate enough to have received the companionship of the Holy Prophetsa and never sat in his company”. The Khilafat of these four companions was called Khilafat-e-Rashida – The Rightly Guided Caliphate. This was a Khilafat established by God Almighty. However, later on the Muslim Ummah witnessed the Umayyad Caliphate,

Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba, Abbasid Caliphate, Mamluk Abbasid Dynasty, Caliphate of Cairo, Ibn Al-Zubayr’s Caliphate, Fatimid Caliphate, Almohad Caliphate, Indian Caliphate, Sokoto Caliphate, Sharifian Caliphate and Ottoman Caliphate etc. All these Caliphates were material kingdoms and dynasties that came to an end in the manner of all man-made political dynasties. These were different to the Khilafat of the Khulafa-e-Rashideen as those Khulafa were appointed by God Almighty and were spiritual in nature. During World War I (1914-1918), the Ottoman Caliphate was defeated. When the European Allies defeated the Ottoman Empire, Muslims across the world had a strong reaction and some Muslims in India initiated a ‘Khilafat Movement’ to preserve the integrity of the Caliphate and the Ottoman Empire. However, they totally failed. The age was crying for a saviour to safeguard the Muslim Ummah. Little did they know that Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas had already been appointed by Allah as the Imam of the Age, the Mahdi, and the awaited Messiah. He initiated the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama’at in 1889 and his mission was to revive faith in the One God and to unite all mankind. He declared: “I have been sent to strengthen faith in God by proving He exists and by making His Being manifest to the people. The condition of faith has become so weak that the Hereafter is now taken as a mere fantasy, and the actions of men clearly show that the degree of certainty with which they believe in this world, and the sort of trust which they put in worldly means, they do not possess such conviction about God and the Hereafter. They pay a lot of lip-service to God, but their hearts are dominated by the love of the world alone. Therefore, I have been sent so that Truth and Faith may again dominate, and fear of God may
again be kindled in the hearts of men! These are the ends for which I have come!” (Kitab al-Barriyya, pp. 293-294.) He admonished his followers: “Be united, and give up all miserliness, rancour, jealousy and lack of compassion. There are two great Commandments of the Holy Qur’an. One is Unity, love and obedience of the Lord, hallowed be
HOW TO OBTAIN GOD’S LOVE Huzooraba stated, “Recite this prayer with abundance:
َ َّک َو ُحبَّ َم ْن ُّیح ُِّب َ ُک ُحب َ بِ ۡس ِم ال ّٰل ُھ َّم انِ ِّي ا َْس َئل ْک َو ال َْع َم َل َّال ِذ ْي یُ َب ِّل ُغنِي َّک اَ َحبَّ الِ َ َّي ِم ْن َّن ْف ِسيْ َو اَھْل ِْي َو ِم َن ال َْماءِ ال َْبارِد ِ۔ َ َّک۔ اَل ّٰل ُھ َّم ا ْج َع ْل ُحب َ ُحب ‘O Allah, indeed I ask you for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the action that will cause me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family and even cold water.’”
His name; and secondly, sympathy with your brethren and with the whole of mankind.” (Azala Auham, pp.446-452.). “This age has become empty of true righteousness and purity. The way of the Holy Prophet, which is the means of purification, has been discarded. Now God Almighty desires that the time of Prophethood should be revived in this age, and the same righteousness and purity may be re-established. Thus, the purpose of God Almighty in setting up this (Ahmadiyya) Community is that the lost understanding might be re-established in the world through this Community.” To achieve these objectives, his methodology was clearly defined: “This humble one is appointed by the Omnipotent and Most Glorious God to work for the betterment of mankind in the manner of the Israeli prophet of Nazareth, the Messiah, with extreme humility, meekness, modesty, love and courtesy. To those who are unaware of the right way, I am to show them the straight path through which they can achieve true Salvation, and feel in this very world the signs of achieving heavenly life, and experience the enlightenment of being accepted and loved by God.” (Tablighe Risalat, Vol. 1, p.11.). In 1908, when Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas passed away the community
was left without a spiritual leader. But as was mentioned earlier in this article, Allah had promised that He will surely make Successors in the earth, as He made Successors from among those who were before. That promise of Allah was fulfilled when He established Khilafat-e-Rashida after the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa. That promise was once again fulfilled after 1400 years in 1908 when Allah showed His mercy to the Muslim Ummah and established Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya after the demise of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad—the Promised Messiahas. Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya is the only Khilafat after Khilafat-e-Rashida that was established by Allah. We have witnessed the success of this Khilafat to this day and shall continue to witness it till the day of judgement. While other Muslims await a Mahdi who would wage a Jihad by the sword, Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya has successfully emerged as the leading force among Muslims to demonstrate and convey the true teachings of Islam that were brought by the Holy Prophetsa.

n 2011 Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba graciously visited the final session of the Muqami Regional Ijtema. We had the privilege of living in the neighbourhood of Khilafat for many years and it was a huge honour for our regional Ijtema to be graced with the presence of Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba. It was a unique and faith-inspiring experience. The preparations for the Ijtema started a long time before the event—special preparations were made as Huzooraba was to lead us in the final session. The Ijtema took place at the Ashcroft Academy close to Fazl Mosque. The exhibition and main hall were all setup 16

to host the various programmes for the day. There was a unique atmosphere, a mixture of joy and excitement, for those who were waiting for beloved Huzoor’saba presence. When Huzooraba arrived at the Ijtema, the atmosphere immediately changed as it always does and it was a joyful experience to be able to share those moments with Hazrat Khalifatul-Masihaba. Though 10 years have passed, all members of Muqami region still cherish the fact that we were blessed to have Huzooraba visit a regional Ijtema. One key feeling that I noted was how the bond brotherhood in the Ijtema instantaneously increased
and the Khuddam truly resembled one family at that time. One very special moment which I recall is when members of the Muqami Region Amila were blessed with the opportunity of having a group photo with Huzooraba. It was a truly mesmerising experience and one which I look back at as a unique, special and historical moment. After Huzooraba left the Ijtema, the brotherhood and joy of the Khuddam and Atfal brothers did not cease. The smiles on all our faces continued as we had just experienced a surreal moment where the Khalifatul-Masihaba had not only visited our regional Ijtema but also delivered a faith inspiring address and handed out prizes to winners of academic and sporting competitions. This was an extraordinary experience that I shall cherish forever and it highlighted to me the beauty of Khilafat. Such Ijtemas, in which Huzoor’saba presence always completely changes the atmosphere, remain unique and unmatched simply due to the love and affection that is naturally carried in with the blessed steps of the Khalifah-e-Waqt.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF HAZRAT KHALIFATUL-MASIH V ABA
EID-UL-FITR SERMON Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba delivered the Eid-ul-Fitr Sermon from Mubarak Mosque, Islamabad to which millions tuned in live. “Today, we must sincerely pray for the Palestinian people who are currently being subjected to grave cruelties. In recent days, when they went to pray in the Al Aqsa Mosque they were brutally attacked and beaten by the state authorities. Similarly, they are being forced out of Sheikh Jarrah, a small neighbourhood, which is their own land. The (Israeli) police are using tear gas and bullets and now airstrikes have started. They say they are targeting their enemies and militants but in reality, horrific and unjust cruelties are taking place and innocent civilians are being attacked. There have also been media reports that the Israeli police have denied wounded people access to medical aid and treatment. May Allah have mercy on the oppressed and may He bring the oppressors to justice.” “May Allah end the injustices from this world and the people may come to recognize God Almighty” Speaking about the true objectives of Eid, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba said: “It is the limitless bounty of Allah that He enabled us to pass
through the month of Ramadan and witness the day of Eid today. However, was this the purpose of Ramadan? Did He simply want that we fast for 29 or 30 days and then we should celebrate the joys of Eid and have food aplenty? Rather, we can and will only truly benefit from this favour of God when we understand the real purpose and objectives underpinning fasting during the month of Ramadan and celebrating Eid – which is that if we have truly acted upon piety during Ramadan, then we should be able to forever continue and build upon the blessings and pious changes made during Ramadan. If we sincerely focus upon fulfilling both the rights of God and of His creation then we can become successful and can be counted amongst the true believers. Fulfilling both these rights is in essence the sum of all the teachings of Islam and it is the sign of a true believer. Allah the Almighty has shown numerous ways of fulfilling these rights, and one of them is to fast during the month of Ramadan which teaches that one can attain their purpose by striving in the cause of God. Then it is followed by Eid. Eid too
is not simply for enjoyment’s sake, rather it has a purpose. Certainly, the blessings of Ramadan can be attained only if a person adopts the pious changes as a continuous part of his life and the joy of Eid will only be attained when we make these changes a part of us forever.” Quoting the Promised Messiahas, Huzooraba said: “What is meant by ‘loving God’? It is to give precedence to Allah the Almighty’s wishes above and beyond one’s own parents, wife, one’s own self; over all else. The Promised Messiahas states, ‘You should always be fearful of God. Before any action, think of whether that action would be pleasing to God or would incur His displeasure… The five daily prayers are of great importance and are a believer’s best means of beseeching God Almighty.”

ne of the questions I had for Huzooraba was: How would an individual overcome frustration and anger, especially with the work load and any pressures that a Murabbi has? Huzooraba replied that a Murabbi – first and foremost – should not have any anger or frustration but that he should make this hadith his target and his way of life: Huzoorsa said that a person should look in worldly affairs at the person who is below him and thus appreciated how God has blessed him. That way he will be content. So Huzoor’saba main message was that if you stay content and if you believe that truly you’ve been blessed and God is always blessing you, there is no way that frustration can creep into your thoughts. Instead you will always be counting your blessings, rather than be frustrated upon the things that you do not have.”

Khilafat— he shall Khilafat—he breathe life into the dead (literally) Hasoor Ahmad Bhatti Masroor Region

any of our Atfal and young Khuddam have been raised in a western society where there are a myriad of various inclinations, activities and temptations that can take us away from the right path. As a result, our relationship with Khilafat becomes all the more important to ensure we can continue to live our lives in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Khilafat is without doubt one of the biggest blessings that Allah the Almighty has blessed us with and it is our duty to ensure we try our best to strengthen our bond with Khilafat. The question arises
as to how this can be achieved. Firstly, we should try and understand why it is important for us to strengthen our relationship with Khilafat. To do so, we should observe the example of the companions of our beloved Prophet Muhammadsa. Throughout their entire lives they were obedient to the Prophetsa and never neglected his commands, Allah the Almighty blessed them with many victories and their struggles reaped great rewards. They received the Help, Mercy and Grace of Allah in all aspects of their lives. On the contrary, those who opposed and disobeyed the Holy Prophetsa,

and later the Khulafa-e-Rashideen, their lives were filled with difficulty, their evil plans were made useless, and they went astray. We see from this example that obedience to the Khulafa is of paramount importance for all followers of Islam. The Holy Qur’an mentions that the Khalifah is appointed by Allah and so disobedience to the Khalifah is disobedience to Allah the Almighty. Therefore, for us to show our obedience to Allah, it’s important for us to obey the directions and instructions of our beloved Huzooraba. In addition to fulfilling our obligations to Allah, there are countless examples of how a strong relationship with Khilafat has brought blessings to members of the community even in the bleakest of times. A personal example of this was when I wrote to Huzoor-eAqdasaba about the recent A-level grade crisis. I had no real hope that I would be able to achieve the required grades to go to my first-choice university, but, due to the prayers of Huzooraba and Allah’s blessings, the government changed its grading method and I received the required grades. Miracles like this have occurred innumerable times impacting people in all sorts of situations and I am sure that if you have been writing letters to Huzooraba regularly you have seen the blessings that can be attained yourself. Apart from writing letters to Huzooraba, we must carefully and regularly listen to the Friday sermon and other addresses of Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba and harness his advice and guidance to better our lives. We should make it a practice to ask Huzoor’saba advice whenever we are about to make important decisions so that Huzoor’saba blessings and prayers are with us. If we succeed at this, then we will
ENGAGE YOURSELF IN PRAYER A Khadim asked Huzooraba, that in today’s age how can one safeguard himself from manifest evil? Huzooraba responded: “Pray a lot, send Durood, and fast intermittently and recite the following prayer a lot:
ََّّک اَ َحب َ َّک۔ اَل ّٰل ُھ َّم ا ْج َع ْل ُحب َ ک َو ال َْع َم َل َّال ِذ ْي یُ َب ِّل ُغنِيْ ُحب َ َّک َو ُحبَّ َم ْن ُّیح ُِّب َ ُک ُحب َ بِ ۡس ِم ال ّٰل ُھ َّم انِ ِّي ا َْس َئل الِ َ َّي ِم ْن َّن ْف ِسيْ َو اَھْل ِْي َو ِم َن ال َْماءِ ال َْبارِد ِ۔ ‘O Allah, indeed I ask you for Your love and the love of those who love You, and for the action that will cause me to attain Your love. O Allah, make Your love more beloved to me than myself, my family and even cold water.’”
surely have pleased Allah the Almighty while also strengthening our ties with Khilafat. Another incident in this regard relates to my mother who resides in Pakistan. She was ill for a while and suddenly fell unconscious. The family was informed by the doctors that she would pass-away soon so all we could do now was pray for her. My plan was to go to Pakistan in the next 4 to 5 days but upon hearing this news, I booked a flight for the very next day. I planned the timings so that my flight was a little later in the day, allowing me to have a mulaqat with Huzooraba. Huzooraba was concerned and asked why I was meeting him so early and if everything was alright with my marriage which it was Alhamdulillah. He then asked why I was going to Pakistan so I explained the situation regarding my mother. Huzooraba said Insha’Allah everything would be fine. Once I left the mulaqat, I informed my sister in Pakistan straight away that Huzooraba had prayed for our mother and given us some Tabarruk. While my mother was unconscious, my sister whispered in her ears that your son had a mulaqat with beloved Huzooraba and requested for prayers and has been
given Tabarruk. Just a few hours later, while I was still at the airport, my mother regained consciousness and I spoke to her over the phone. I was shocked by how fast our beloved Huzoor’saba prayers had been accepted. Once I reached Pakistan, I spoke to my mother and she told me that when my sister had informed her about the meeting with Huzooraba her body twitched and that was the point when she started getting better. Alhamdulillah, Allah had granted her health and recovery thanks to the prayers of the Khalifah. There are numerous examples of how Khuddam can connect with Huzooraba and there are perhaps millions of examples where Ahmadis across the world have benefitted from this connection. May Allah allow us all to obey our beloved Huzooraba and strengthen our relationship with Khilafat.

Hazrat Hakeem Maulvi Nooruddinra was born in 1841 in Bhera (India). He was a renowned physician holding the post of Royal Physician to the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir for many years. Furthermore, he was also as a prolific writer, theologian, scholar of Arabic and Hebrew. His extensive travels included a long stay in the cities of Mecca and Medina in pursuit of religious knowledge. He was well known due to his righteousness and skill. He was the most loyal servant of the Promised Messiahas, as the Promised Messiahas himself testified.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF HAZRAT KHALIFATUL-MASIH IRA
Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Ira led each of the five daily prayers himself. After the Fajr prayer, he would first deliver a Dars-e-Qur’an to women, followed by another Dars, with individual attention to Hazrat Sahibzada Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmadra and his fellow students. An hour or so would then be spent in examining his patients. Later there would be the general Dars of the Holy Qur'an and Ahadith. The day’s mail would then be attended to with Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Ira providing directions on the response to be given to each letter. Every letter was answered and Huzoorra prayed for all those who requested prayers. Much of the remainder of the day would be taken up by attending to his other patients, and meeting with officials of the Anjuman, missionaries and teachers. Finally, an evening Dars-e-Qur’an was also held.

Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Ira examined him and wrote a prescription. The fellow placed before him a Guinea (worth Rs. 15 then) plus one rupee in gratitude and left.Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Ira at once prostrated in thanksgiving saying ‘I was confident my Lord, my Friend woud never forsake me. Perhaps the man would not give anything at all since as a rule I do not ask for anything or he would present only one guinea. azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“One desire of Hazrat KhalifatulMasih IVrh was to make people steadfast in Namaz. Being steadfast in Namaz means to offer prayers on time and in congregation. Worship of Allah is essential and can be compared to the air we breathe. There are many factors in sustaining life, however the importance of breathing air in sustaining life is central, most important, essential and is required at every moment, worship has the same relationship with man’s spiritual life. From the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and the Ahadith, we learn that Namaz is the minimum form of Zikr-e-Ilahi (remembrance of Allah) without which a person cannot stay alive. Alongside the need for external cleanliness before performing prayer, Namaz instils within a person the need for internal purity. For prayer to be effective there is a need to recognise the attributes of Allah, together with one’s own responsibilities and the fact that, for true acceptance of prayer, one recognises that man is but a servant of Allah and must seek his forgiveness and mercy through prayer.” 22

The aim of all of the Jama’at’s auxiliary organisations is to attain the pleasure of Allah and to abide by the rules of taqwa [righteousness]. Hazrat Musleh Maudra, upon establishing Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, said that the Jama’at needs to excel in virtuousness, taqwa, worship, wisdom and in justice. He said that it is for this purpose that I am establishing Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, so that the Jama’at is able to excel in the aforementioned deeds and is able to guide others too. Never lying and always telling the truth should be a sign of being an Ahmadi Khadim or Tifl. One cannot attain nearness of Allah without giving up lying. Not fulfilling promises is also lying. he central remit of the Khidmat-e-Khalq department is serving humanity and since the inception of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya, Khidmat-e-Khalq activities have formed an important part of its output. Throughout the years successive Khulafa have expanded and reiterated our responsibilities to the wider society and our responsibilities towards Allah the Almighty. I would like to draw your attention to some of the addresses by Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba, which have guided us on how to better fulfil this responsibility. On the specific point of our responsibilities towards Allah and humanity Huzooraba stated: “A righteous deed is a ladder to rise towards Islam and God. The reality of a good deed needs to be borne in mind... Satan misleads people in every way and leads them astray from the path of Truth. The Promised Messiahas gave the example of a self-indulgent person, who chooses to donate left over bread to a hungry person, despite having a freshly prepared meal to hand. This does not comply with the Divine commandment that Allah the Exalted says: ‘And they feed, for love of Him, the poor, the orphan, and the prisoner.’ He did not feed the poor from what was Ta’am (means desirable food) for him, but from the left-overs. This is not a true act of virtue. To attain a true act of virtue demands a lot of self-reflection and endeavour. True virtue cannot be acquired without having absolute faith in God Almighty. True 26
TARIQ MAGAZINE
virtue is attained when one develops faith in God Almighty as All-Seeing, Who is totally aware of everything and possesses knowledge of the unseen.” This is an essential point that we all should follow when we are performing any services to humanity. Our responsibilities are not fulfilled unless we make them true acts of virtue. To achieve that level of virtue we need to constantly look at our actions and critically reflect on our intentions and our efforts. Huzooraba further highlighted the nature of worship and how it relates to serving humanity at the inauguration of Nasir Mosque in Kent: “When we study the details of how to worship in the Holy Qur’an… A person’s prayers will not be accepted if they do not seek to help the poor and deprived. A person’s prayers will not be accepted if they are not fulfilling the rights of orphans. A person’s prayers will not be accepted if they are not striving to end all forms of slavery. And a person’s prayers will not be accepted if they do not show mercy to one another and indeed to all forms of God’s creation. Furthermore, and as I have said, Islam teaches Muslims to fulfil the rights of God’s creation, and so it is necessary for a Muslim to fulfil the rights of those mired in poverty and to help those who are orphaned or enslaved. That is why for the cause of social welfare the Ahmadiyya Community has opened various hospitals, orphanages and schools, both in Africa, and in other under-developed
parts of the world. In places where people do not have access to water the Ahmadiyya Community is devising plans and running projects to provide them with clean drinking water by installing hand-pumps and other devices.” Here Huzooraba highlights just how important the concept of serving humanity is in Islam, so much so that it is an essential requirement for having our prayers accepted. Each and every one of us is urged to form a living connection with God and we cannot achieve that without caring for those in need. At the inauguration of the Nasir Hospital in Guatemala in 2018 Huzooraba further stated: “Ever since its foundation, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has always sought to be on the very front lines of serving humanity, whether it be directly through our own Community’s schemes, through Humanity First or through the support of other charities and good causes… we do not discriminate against any community or people and do not give any priority to our own members. We seek no praise and no reward for such efforts because we are merely doing what our religion has taught us to do. Our motivation and our desire to serve others is driven entirely by the teachings of Islam. The guiding light for any true Muslim is the Holy Qur’an, which was revealed to Islam’s Founder, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa. Time and again, the Holy Qur’an has instructed Muslims to serve mankind and to fulfil the needs of those who are suffering or are deprived in any way. It requires Muslims to be selfless and consumed by a love for others. It requires us to be ever-ready to make sacrifices for the sake of the peace and well-being of other people.” The key takeaway here for us is that our actions always need to be selfless and never with a goal of receiving a reward other than what Allah the Almighty grants us through His mercy. Huzooraba also elaborated on how we should provide assistance to people and
SHAHID 2020 EXPERIENCES
EDITION IV | 2021 referencing the Holy Qur’an said: “The hallmark of a true Muslim is that he should care for all of God’s creation and should comfort and support those in need, whether they seek their help or not. Hence, it is not enough for a Muslim to wait until someone asks for help; rather, it is his duty to recognise the suffering of others and to make whatever sacrifices are required in order to help them overcome their challenges or troubles.” Huzooraba has also specifically highlighted that we should always keep the end goal in mind. We want to assist people to allow them to stand on their own feet. Huzooraba stated: “In chapter 90, verses 15–17, Muslims are instructed to feed the hungry, to show empathy and love to orphans, and to help anyone in need, especially those mired in poverty or who are defenceless and weak. Muslims are taught to be the ones who comfort and love those people who have been failed by society and to carry the weight of their burdens on their own shoulders. Muslims are duty-bound to help underprivileged people, so that they can stand upon their own two feet, live with dignity, and be freed from their desperate circumstances. In return, the Qur’an states Muslims will be rewarded with increased spirituality, which in turn will take them towards God Almighty and make them recipients of His pleasure.” In 2019, Huzooraba reiterated this at the historic address at the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Headquarters in Paris. Commenting upon the teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, Huzooraba stated: “He taught that spiritual advancement was intrinsically linked to serving humanity and so a Muslim could not attain the love of God Almighty just through worship and prayer, rather the love of God Almighty required Muslims to serve humanity.” This specifically highlights some of the areas we need to think about when serving humanity and further it highlights the
need to keep the dignity of people in mind whenever we help them. This process of helping will increase our spirituality and bring us closer to God. This is how we fulfil the purpose of our existence in this world. Huzooraba further highlighted the importance of keeping the dignity of those we are helping in mind: “Even in small matters, the Holy Prophet of Islamsa paid great attention to ensuring that the feelings of underprivileged people were protected. For example, he instructed Muslims to always invite the poor and needy to their dinner parties or social gatherings. If less affluent people were exploited by the rich or powerful, the Prophet of Islamsa instructed his followers to help the weaker party attain justice.” The eradication of suffering has wide ranging implication in society not least for the attainment of peace. Huzooraba summarised this in the following way: “Where, out of human sympathy, we seek to eradicate poverty and destitution, we also consider it to be the key to developing sustainable peace in the world. Only if people have food to eat, water to drink, shelter, schooling for their children and healthcare will they be able to live in peace and escape the deadly clutches of frustration and resentment that lead people towards extremism. These are all basic human rights and so until we help people flee poverty and destitution, we will not see true peace in the world.” This shows the importance of Khidmat-e-Khalq work and why Huzooraba places such importance on it. It is central to our prayers being accepted and is itself a form of worship. Huzooraba has also highlighted how to serve humanity and what real service entails. This only scratches the surface of Huzoor’saba advice and guidance on how to serve humanity and what it means. I hope this will encourage you to dig deeper and further understand what is required of us and how to truly bring about a change in society.

he first thing I realised was how well Hazrat KhalifatulMasihaba knows every one of us. On the day of the first class as soon as Huzooraba came in and sat down, he started from the right and pointed at each person and told us our names. He said “Tum Harris ho, tum Mubaraz ho, tum Athar ho, tum Sarfraz ho” [You are Harris, you are Mubaraz etc.] and even though we had masks on covering half our faces, Huzooraba was still able to recognise us. Whilst reading the book [assigned to us] we came across a chapter where Huzooras wrote regarding prayers, and how he healed people with his prayers. Regarding this a question came to my mind that once Huzooraba said regarding Ibrahim Ikhlaf [National Secretary Tabligh for the UK Jama’at] that when he became ill with COVID-19, Huzooraba said ‘Don’t worry he will recover and be completely fine’ and this was at a time when Ibrahim Ikhlaf was terribly ill and we were receiving messages that he was in a very serious condition. I was curious, so I asked Huzooraba as to how he was so certain and how did he have so much conviction that he would recover. Huzooraba said that ‘Sometimes when I pray, God puts a certain conviction in my heart that this person would be okay, and sometimes when I say something God blesses my words in a way that whatever I have said, that comes to be.’ Huzooraba further commented that ‘In your prayers, you should have this feeling of Continued on page 26 27

conviction’. One of my classmates asked Huzooraba if he had ever wanted to go to Jamia when he was younger and Huzooraba replied that when he was at that age he made the intention to go to Jamia with a friend. And Huzooraba said his friend ended up going to Jamia but Huzooraba did not, and said that he made many different intentions and then said ‘In the end, I came to hold that station for which I never had any intention’.”

So, when it came to the class Huzooraba asked all of us if we had read the fifty pages, and when we replied that we have tried to prepare it as best as we could, Huzooraba went through the fifty pages and asked us about the minutest of details. The amazing thing was Huzooraba did not actually have the book in front of him, and despite this Huzooraba was able to recall the smallest details from the book. In those moments it felt as though Huzooraba was our teacher whilst we all sat in a classroom. This was a unique experience and something I will cherish forever.”

ver since I have moved to the UK, I have been blessed with numerous opportunities to serve the Jama’at including numerous experiences with Khilafat. One such incident happened during Hifazat-e-Markaz duty. During this duty, I was asked to stand guard by the door where Huzooraba enters and exits the Mubarak Mosque. I was also advised to present Huzooraba with a shoehorn as Huzooraba exited the mosque. At the time, I was trembling with excitement to have been given such a blessed opportunity, one that all Ahmadis dream of. However, at the same time, this was a very daunting experience. I grew more and more anxious as the moment came closer and this was becoming apparent to others around me. One of Huzoor’saba security guards came and reassured me that everything would be fine and gave me further instructions on how to present the shoehorn to Huzooraba. Finally, when Huzooraba exited the mosque, I did as I was instructed and presented the shoe horn to Huzooraba. Howev-
er, Huzooraba noticed me and the tremble in my hand and asked, “Are you not an Ansar yet?”. I replied that I was still a Khadim. After Huzooraba left, I realised that this short conversation had lifted the tremble and anxiety from my body. I thought to myself that Huzooraba may have spoken to me to make me feel at ease. After this incident, all I wanted to do was inform my family back in Pakistan. My mother was especially moved and I thought to myself that this was such a minor thing in the eyes of those who did not have a Khalifah, yet for us even the smallest of encounters with Huzooraba leaves a lasting memory. In these times, we tend to take a lot of things for granted. This incident is one that may seem very ordinary and small to a normal person; however, these are the opportunities which Ahmadis from around the world pray to experience. This was indeed, one of the greatest moments of my life, Alhamdulillah.

he incident that I share below relates to the birth of my son. In December 2015, me and my wife were expecting. I had been taking my wife to the doctor regularly and had been advised that our child would be born after the 17th of January. It is worth noting that I was told by the doctor that it was very unlikely that our child would be born any time before that. In December, Jalsa Salana Qadian was also taking place (as it does every year). I had wished to go to Qadian to meet my mother and my siblings, as I had not seen them in a very long time. After taking the doctor’s advice into account, I had made preparations to go to Qadian, thinking that I would be back in time for the birth of my child. As the date grew closed, I began to feel more an more worried for my wife and began to doubt whether it
would be wise to leave for Qadian. A few days before my flight, I decided to write a letter to Huzooraba requesting advice. A few days after writing a letter to Huzooraba, I received a call from the private secretary’s office, who explained to me that they are making this call on direct instructions given by Huzooraba, who had asked them to instruct me immediately. I was shocked as I had not expected a reply this early, let alone a phone call from the private secretary’s office. I was overwhelmed. The fact that Huzooraba took time out of his busy schedule for me was something that petrified me. I was an eyewitness to the immense love that Huzooraba has for all Ahmadis. After pulling myself together, I listened carefully to the instructions given by Huzooraba. The individual from the Private Secretary’s office said he would read out the advice and that the letter would also arrive in due course. The letter began to be read over the phone to me and stated, “You have
written for advice in relation to going to Qadian. It is my advice that you should not go to Qadian, as during this period, your child will be born.” Immediately after the call ended, I dialled my mother and informed her of the advice that I had received from Huzooraba and that I would not be able to travel to Qadian and see her. I expected her to feel some sadness. However, she was very happy to learn of this direct advice from Huzooraba and said that this was certainly the better course of action. As noted earlier the Doctor did not expect my child to arrive before January 17th and my cancelled flight was due to take off on the evening of 23 December 2015. On 24 December, my child was born. Our Beloved Huzooraba, who has never seen me or my wife before, instructed me that my child would be born during the period I would be gone. Huzoor’saba words echoed in me the moment my child was born. This incident was such that it has shocked all that I have told. The blessings of Khilafat are such that cannot be found anywhere else on this earth.

fter recently finishing the exams and interviews for our Shahid Degree, we were at home due to the pandemic. But that all changed one day as we were called to be COVID tested and told we would be quarantining in Jamia Ahmadiyya UK so that we could do duties in Islamabad. (This was in June 2020). A few weeks passed and another call came. This time the message was to pack our bags and move to Islamabad. Little did we know that this was the place we would now call home. Our duties were spread throughout the day to give us time to rest, ensuring we were vigilant for the next shift. Some of us were very fortunate to be on duty whilst Huzoor-e-Anwaraba would come out to inspect Islamabad and there would often be interactions with Huzooraba also. Once Huzooraba came to inspect the field of Islamabad and to my good fortune I was outside having a drink of water. I was very fortunate to be one of the few that were accompanying Huzooraba through
the grass. During this 10-15 minute walk he turned towards me and asked whether my wife and daughter had arrived in the UK. To this I replied that as of yet they have not but Insha’Allah they would be joining me soon. It was a surprise for me as Huzooraba was very busy and interested in this inspection and the fact that he took time to ask about my family personally, left me speechless and ever more thankful at having the opportunity to serve so close to Huzooraba. MTA that Huzooraba had made his way to see and give his blessings to those standing outside the Mosque. I was very happy for my fellows as they had the opportunity of being spoken to by Huzooraba, but there was also a piece of me wishing I could have been there. It was not too long after when we saw a car approaching our post. A Khadim came out with a cup in his hand and said “This is Huzoor’saba herbal tea, he said to give it to those who were on duty outside.” Words cannot describe the emotions that we went through. Alhamdulillah, we were very fortunate to be able to set up for, attend and help wind up Jalsa Salana 2020 that was held inside Islamabad. I was also blessed with the opportunity to recite the Holy Qur’an in the concluding session. A chance that I would not have had if it was not for the situation we were in. It should be known to all that we were not just there on our own terms, rather Huzooraba had kept us there and personally was looking after even our smallest needs. On a few occasions, Huzooraba would come to our accommodation after Namaz and bless us with his presence. He would inquire where we slept and how we were living and would even give advice on how to maintain hygiene and cleanliness. He made sure that we had everything we needed. Another evening, I was on duty on the walkway towards the mosque. It was just before Isha’a and to my amazement I saw Huzooraba holding the banister of his staircase and looking in my direction out of his window. I was in awe and panicking. After Namaz I remember a member of the security team knocked on my cabin and handed me a
plate, he said “This plate of aloo mattar (potatoes and peas) has been sent from Huzoor’saba house”. Again, words will not do justice to the feelings of the moment. It had now been three months that we were living inside Islamabad and a message came through from the office of the private secretary that you will be having a meeting with Huzooraba. Everyone broke into a state of excitement and were also confused as to what this could be about. Many previous graduates from Jamia gave the suggestion that this may be the meeting they all had before leaving for Africa and Pakistan. The day of the meeting came and the location that was chosen was the main Mosque. As we entered there were cameras set up. We all took our seats and waited patiently for Huzooraba. As Huzooraba walked in, an awe overtook the entire hall and Huzooraba instructed straight away that the cameras be turned off and that no one should be in the mosque except our class. Little did we know that the king of this age had planned something for us that our future generations will Insha’Allah hold dear to their hearts. This was the start of the series of classes in which we were personally led by Huzooraba. Till date we have read Haqeeqatul Wahi [The Philosophy of Divine Revelation], Paigham-e-Sulh [Message of Peace], Taqdeer-e-Ilahi [Divine Predetermination] and Malaikatullah [Angels of Allah]. Since September, we have had 1 or 2 sittings with Huzooraba every week in which most of the time would be studying and understanding the book in question followed by some time
Huzooraba gave us to ask questions and speak to Huzooraba about anything. In these sittings we have had firsthand guidance from Huzooraba in regards to bettering ourselves first and then focusing on others. Huzooraba checks on our Tahajjud, our routines and what we do in our free time. Also, he keeps check on our diets and in our sittings, discusses a possible menu and has instructed that we discuss a menu and then show him. This menu was implemented within the same week. I had been blessed with a baby daughter who was born in Canada and after 10 months, in December 2020 my family was given the all clear to come over. Huzooraba had also graciously approved for my posting to be in Wakalat Maal Islamabad. As my family were coming soon, I was also blessed with a small bungalow 3 minutes away from Islamabad. The purpose of the article was not to show how lucky we are staying so close to Huzooraba, rather, it is to highlight Huzoor’saba compassion, love and care for each and every individual of the Jama’at. If it was not me, there would be someone else in my place and Huzooraba would not treat him any differently. We are so lucky. We can only do justice to this blessing of God by praying in our Namaz that may Allah always protect His Khalifah and may He give him a long and healthy life. Ameen.

Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIra Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Ira passes away on the 13th of March 1914. The following day Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmadra is elevated to the station of Khilafat. Hazrat Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmood Ahmadra was born in 1889 and was blessed with special abilities. His birth was in accordance with the divine prophecy that was vouchsafed to the Promised Messiahas, known as Musleh Maud. He was elevated to the lofty station of Khilafat at the age of 25 years and his Khilafat lasted for over 51 years.
ELECTED AS THE SECOND KHALIFATUL-MASIH

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A KHALIFAH?
EDITION IV | 2021
Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIra states: “God has explained the work of the Holy Prophetsa as the following: 1. Recite the verses of God to the people, 2. Purify them, 3. Teach them the book and 4. Impart wisdom to them.
In order to protect Pakistan from the opponents who seek to harm it, Hazrat Musleh Maudra initiates the Furqan Force. A military force consisting of young Ahmadis protect the Kashmir border from Indian attacks. The services rendered are even praised by the Commander in Chief of the Pakistan army.
I also explained that these four tasks of the Prophet cannot be performed by any ‘Anjuman’. They can be performed only by the person whom God Himself appoints after the Prophet, and who is entitled as Khalifah.”
Blessings of Khilafat
Following the creation of Pakistan the boundary of the new India is announced and Qadian falls on the Indian side of the border. Hazrat Musleh Maudra orders the evacuation of Qadian. Over the next few months all the Ahmadis are to migrate to Pakistan. A handful of Ahmadis remain behind to safeguard the sacred and holy places of Qadian. ADVICE TO YOUNG KHUD The age of youth is when one should address and do away with evil temptations so that one can build a better future.
H
azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“Youth is an age where, if the special grace of Allah the Almighty and His mercy are not bestowed, a youngster can become embroiled in many evils. Apart from being estranged from Allah the Almighty, certain other evils can take root which can impact a Khadim’s life, can cause distress to his family. There are other evils which can create disorder within a society. Thus, this is such an age where an individual, alongside making or destroying his own life, is also making or destroying the life of a nation. It is for this reason that Hazrat KhalifatulMasih IIra stated that ‘Nations cannot be reformed without the reformation of the youth’. Thus, this is such a phrase, it is such a slogan that instilling it’s essence in one’s heart and the regurgitation and repetition of it by the Jama’at will guarantee the marvellous future of the Jama’at.” 38

I am speaking for my entire class when I say that our time after Jamia has been beyond anything we could ever have imagined. It has been nothing short of a miracle; Allah has surely bestowed us with His Grace and favour. The 17 of us have been blessed with servitude in close proximity to Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba. We have been given the task of performing duties in Islamabad, where each one of us does an 8-hour shift every day. We have also been given the opportunity of working in the offices located in Islamabad where we work throughout the rest of our day. However, it is beyond doubt that the highlight of our stay in Islamabad has been the biweekly classes graciously conducted by Huzooraba himself. This experience has been dreamlike from day one. I remember the first day we were told about the class. We were told two or three days prior to the class taking place and that it would occur on Monday and Tuesday. recent event in my life which further ignited my faith in Islam and Khilafat was one that I feel many of my fellow Khuddam would have similarly experienced. I am currently studying in Scotland, 500 miles away from my parents and family who live in London. While the pandemic and social restrictions provided me with the opportunity for great reflection and self-improvement, I also suffered lengthy periods of self-doubt and helplessness. These feelings were exacerbated when I learned that my father had fallen ill. My mother told me of his symptoms on the phone: dry, persistent cough and an intense, unrelenting fever. A test only confirmed the inevitable: he was COVID-19 positive. Although the recovery rates provided comfort for some, his underlying health condition of Parkinson’s disease left me fearing the worst. At that point, the symptoms had already been present for 2 weeks and showed no sign of
The feelings of isolation and seclusion were overwhelming and being unable to help my parents in any physical way did not help. With no real understanding of what to do, I reached out to a friend who consoled me and insisted that I write a letter to Huzooraba, to ask for prayer. After giving this some thought it was obvious that this was the only logical thing to do. I immediately did so, detailing my father’s health condition in a short letter as well as the current situation of isolation from my parents. The second instruction that I was given was to invoke Durood Shareef as often and meaningfully as I could. By the grace of Allah, within 4 days of sending the letter, the symptoms had abated and by the end of the next week, he was COVID-19 free. I wrote a second letter to Huzooraba to inform him of the updated situation and good news. All that was left to be said thereafter was Alhamdullilah. This may come across as a trivial thing to some. However, it is these personal experiences that allow us to truly understand the importance of Khilafat..

t the start of the pandemic, I was part of a Mechanical engineering research group that thought we could help in developing medical equipment for the pandemic. Utilising my supervisor’s strong links with industry, we quickly found a number of other companies which similarly wanted to play their part in helping society during the pandemic (including the Mercedes F1 team). We assembled a team of engineers, doctors and health professionals to see where we could have the largest impact and what
we should be building. In the news at the time was a call from the government for companies to develop ventilators. However, from conversations with the doctors it became apparent that we should really be building a different type of device, one that stopped people from deteriorating and needing a ventilator in the first place. The device which we thought was best placed to do this was a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) which helps keep the lungs expanded and stops the collapsing effect COVID-19 has on the lungs. As ini-
tial talks were progressing, I wrote a letter to Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba asking for prayers for success in developing this device and for it to help as many people as possible. I immediately noticed the blessings of Khilafat as the device was engineered by the team in a record 26 hours and was being tested on a trial patient just 100 hours after the initial conversation—a truly remarkable pace of design/engineering and manufacture, which many of the engineers and team members working on the project couldn’t believe themselves. After this the team then looked to gain approval for the device from the MHRA (UK’s medical device regulator). I once again wrote a letter to Huzooraba asking for further prayers for the project. Again, Huzoor’saba prayers worked like magic, in that normally a process that takes years for most medical devices was completed in a few days, once again the whole team was amazed at the progress that was being made! 10,000 of the devices were then mass manufactured by Mercedes F1 and all were delivered to the NHS in under 30 days from the start of the project. Furthermore, all the design and manufacturing files of the device were open sourced. Recently 1000 devices have also been sent to India. The speed and success of this project in my eyes can only be attributed to Huzoor’saba prayers and the blessings of Khilafat.

he resplendent glory of Islam shone forth from the Arabian peninsula in the 6th century to fundamentally alter the course of Human history. Driven by the injunctions of the Holy Prophetsa to “acquire knowledge even if you have to travel to China” the Islamic world rejuvenated the darkness of the middle ages and became within a few short years, the seat of learning and technological advancements, spanning geometry, geology, medicine, chemistry, physics and astronomy. Between much of the 8th and 14th century the Islamic world 42

was the unrivalled global superpower in technological and scientific learning. The loss of this prestige was a travesty for the world of Islam and the Muslims, a situation which sadly persists to this day. Many historical explanations have been sought for this situation. However, one theological explanation is the loss of the initial zeal of faith in the Muslims, driven by a lack of unity and leadership in the Muslim world. The Prophetsa had presciently foretold that Allah removes knowledge from a people by the death of its scholars; the slow, yet almost inexorable decline of the Muslim
mastery over worldly sciences perhaps indicated a sign from Allah (the Bestower of munificent graces) upon which Muslims would do well to reflect. The rejuvenation of Islam at the hands of the Promised Messiahas offered an opportunity to stop this decline. The Promised Messiahas brought about a remarkable reformation in the condition of the Muslim Ummah and attitude towards scientific achievements. Many of the traditional ‘ulema’ (scholars) had turned against all forms of western learning and scientific pursuits, whereas others, notably from the Aligarh school rapidly adopted modernisation with such tenacity that the fundamental principles of Islam, such as belief in prayer or belief in the angels, were waylaid as of no use. The Promised Messiahas took the golden middle way pointing out that the ‘word’ of God and the ‘act’ of God could never be incongruent. Indeed, he pointed to many of the technological advancements of the day such as the modern printing press and the invention of the combustion engine as evidence in support of the prophetic truths contained in the Qur’an and Hadith and to be brought to use in the service of Islam. He had a remarkably scientific attitude in the 18th Century, suggesting the use of a controlled

trial to test the acceptance of his prayers, encouraging the population at large to take up the plague vaccine and to ensure obedience to governmental hygiene regulations to stop its spread. Allah the Almighty had vouchsafed to him that members of his community would be distinguished in both spiritual and worldly knowledge. This prophecy that was fulfilled in part with the Nobel prize of Professor Abdus Salam, reported by the scientific commentator Professor Jim Al-Khalili to be the most remarkable scientist emerging from the Muslim world in the last 1000 years. It is thus far from surprising that the Khulafa of the Messiah (may Allah have mercy on them all) have encouraged the pursuit of scientific knowledge and the development of a love for exploring the world God has created. The First Khalifah, Hazrat Maulvi Nooruddinra was known for his deep love of learning and was a renowned physician, acting for a period of 15 years as the personal physician for the Maharaja of Kashmir. He did not confine himself to a single school of medicine or thought, rather just like the earlier scientists and physicians of Islam he contented himself with knowledge wherever it was gleaned. Hazrat Chaudhury Zafrullah Khanra narrates: “He did not confine himself to what was generally known as the Yunani system of medicine. He procured several books from Egypt on the allopathic system in Arabic and made a careful study of them. He took lessons in the Hindi system from an aged Hindi Physician, Pandit Harnam Das, and studied Amrit Sagar and Sasrat with him... One day the Maharaja enquired from him: Why do you pay so much deference to Pandit Harnam Das? He replied: I revere him as my teacher”. Hazrat Maulvi Nooruddinra was well known for his love of books and would refer to them often. He was anxious to instil a love of learning in the Ahmadiyya Community and the Ummah in general, issuing the following declaration on 27th February 1911 “There
is a scheme for the establishment of a Muslim University in India, and some of our friends have enquired whether they should contribute towards it… as the Muslim University project is a beneficent one, I consider it necessary that our friends should contribute in every way towards promoting it.” In a similar way, the Second Khalifah Hazrat Musleh Maudra was at the forefront of promoting scientific progress and understanding within the community. In a seminal lecture in March 1926 entitled ‘Religion and Science’ delivered in Lahore, he touched on the fundamental precepts of the religious-scientific divide to show there was in essence no conflict between the two. He pointed out that there was incongruity between the Word and Act of God, so long as the religion was a living faith in God and not mere superstitious belief. He elucidated several verses from the Qur’an and sayings of the Prophetsa from the Hadith to show the perspicacity of the original Islamic texts relating to scientific matters. Amongst many examples, he explained the Hadith on killing rodents in sacred places, as foreshadowing rodents as a vector for contagious diseases. He related that sometimes misunderstanding is caused as religious knowledge and scientific knowledge form different domains and are required for different fields of human endeavour. He provided cogent arguments that Darwinian theories did not negate the existence of God, rather at most only pointed to the existence of a method, and provided the criteria to differentiate spiritual revelation from altered mental experiences seen in psychiatric disorders. Readers are encouraged to read the lecture in full since a brief summary cannot render justice to its insights. The work of Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIra was not solely theoretical but also practical – an article in Nature (June 1946) praised the establishment of the Fazl-e-Umar research institute at his direction: “A remarkable sign of the

miscommunication because it was not possible that Huzooraba could give us two consecutive days for mulaqat. We went with the mindset that it could be either Monday or Tuesday and a oneoff occurrence. As the first class drew to a conclusion Huzooraba looked at us and said ‘for tomorrow I’m giving you homework which is to read fifty-pages of Haqeeqatul-Wahi [The Philosophy of Divine Revelation]’. That is when I knew that we were in the middle of something historical. At one point in this class, the word ‘Ashab-e-Suffah’ came up and it was a revelation of the Promised Messiahas that he too would be granted Ashab-eSuffah in a similar vein to as the Holy Prophetsa.’ We asked Huzooraba, ‘Who are or were these Ashab-e-Suffah, and what was meant by this revelation?’ To this, Huzooraba said that ‘Ashab-eSuffah are the people that surrounded the Promised Messiahas and the people that surround the Khalifah-e-Waqt at this time.’ Huzooraba said that every Waqf-e-Nau, Murabbi, Waqf-eZindagi is a member of the Ashab-eSuffah, because they are always at the doorstep of Khilafat ready to sacrifice their lives, time, wealth and honour for His sake.

recognition of the important part which science must play in the India of the future is shown by the decision of the leader of the Ahmadiyya Community, Hazrat Khalifatul-Masihra, to devote a generous part of its funds to the foundation of a research institute. This community is responsible already for a number of educational institutions, including the Talimul Islam College, but its leader now considers the time to be ripe for a further development. The new research institute, the Fazl-e-Umar Research Institute, Qadian, is being opened at a time when India is undergoing a scientific renaissance, and private benefactions have their part to play in making this a success.” The institute was opened on 19th April 1946 by the prominent Indian scientist Sir Shanti Bhatnagar with Dr Abdul Ahmad named as the director. The main focus of the institute was biochemistry and agricultural technologies. Due to this guidance from the Khulafa-e-Ahmadiyyat a culture of seeking the highest levels of education was embedded amongst the community. This went hand in hand with the ever present prophecy vouchsafed to the Promised Messiahas, “He (God) has conveyed to me that my followers will excel so much in knowledge and insight that they will confound all others with the light of their truth, their reasoning and their signs.” (Tajalliyate Ilahiya). This prophecy has been fulfilled multiple times through individuals of the community and most apparently with Prof. Abdus Salam, the first Muslim and Pakistani to win the Nobel Prize. Upon Dr Abdus Salam winning the prize, Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIIrh initiated the gold medal scheme, where top achieving students of the community would be awarded a gold medal every year. At the time of introducing this scheme Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IIIrh wanted over 100 Ahmadi scientists who would follow in the footsteps of Dr Abdus Salam. Throughout his Khilafat, Huzoorrh drew

A Khadim once told Huzooraba that he tends to forget what he has learnt in exams. Upon this, Huzooraba said, “Recite the following prayers:

the attention of the community towards achieving excellence and bringing about a new age of enlightenment. During an address to a gathering on the progress of the Fazl-e-Umar Foundation, Huzoorrh said: “The writings, speeches and observations of the Promised Messiahas abound in vast oceans of knowledge. If we could grasp their beauty and their beneficence and examine them from different angles and project in this manner our research to the world, even the whole of mankind dare not compete with us... Our research should be intellectual and should scintillate with spiritual flashlights. There would otherwise be not much to choose between our contribution and that of a lay thinker and author. It will carry no weight. The secularly-minded philosophers and writers have amassed a big store of knowledge. But they have failed to save the world from moral and spiritual death.” The focus being that Ahmadi’s need to avail themselves of the knowledge and methodologies developed by secular scholars, but Ahmadis can take benefit of spiritual insight that may elucidate the truth. Within this he expounds the Islamic philosophy of truth in inquiry and the weight it puts on honesty and integrity, a point modern, secular researchers would do well to heed. Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih IVrh embodied the idea of an “intellectual discourse, scintillating with moments of spiritual flashlights”. From Friday Sermons to the Q&A
meetings held in Fazl Mosque, London, there is not a topic within the sphere of science he did not cover with bewildering rigour and philosophical discourse. His magnum opus, Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth is a beautiful illustration of the interplay between both natural and social sciences and the knowledge contained within the Holy Qur’an. Time and time again he encouraged Ahmadis to study science. Often mid-way through a sermon, a topic for further investigation would arise and once again he would stop to draw the attention of Ahmadi scientists. In a deeply philosophical Friday Sermon on Ayat An-Noor and the nature of Noor [Light] in the universe, he unites seemingly disparate fields of interest back to the Noor of Allah. These constant reminders took on a very focussed programme within the time of Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba. From the outset of his Khilafat, Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba engaged directly with the youth, reminding them of the importance of science and achieving excellence in education. The address he delivered in the final session of the AMRA conference in 2019 is just one example of how the Khilafat of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has bequeathed to the Muslim Ummah a thirst for knowledge that shall most certainly usher in a new golden age of Islam.

VIRTUAL MULAQAT WITH JAMIA AHMADIYYA QADIAN STUDENTS On 17 April 2021, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad—Khalifatul-Masih Vaba held a virtual mulaqat with 19 students from Jamia Ahmadiyya Qadian, India
Giving a tip to the students and highlighting the true mark of closeness with the Caliph of the time, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba said: “Place a photo of yours in the corner of your letter and that way I will know that you have written the letter and I will start to recognise you. There are many astute students of the different Jamias who already do this and so over time I begin to recognise them personally. Those living in the UK, I recognise them as they often meet me. However, simply having a personal relationship and recognition of someone in itself is not something to be proud of. A real connection and bond with Khilafat is established by acting upon the directives and the initiatives of the Caliph of the time and persuading others to do so and so you should pray to attain this true spiritual connection.” Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba was also asked if he ever faced any difficulty which had caused him extreme anguish. Huzooraba said: “By the Grace of Allah, I have not faced any such overwhelming
difficulty which would cause me to become extremely anxious or desperate. During my student life, as a student I was worried about passing my exams and so in such circumstances I bowed down before God, I opened my heart and wept before Him. I prayed to Allah the Almighty and He then created such means that helped me and removed all my worries. This has always been my experience and so if a person faces any type of difficulty, he should beseech Allah. If he does this sincerely and with purity of heart, then Allah the Almighty accepts their prayer. Certainly, prayers and charity (Sadqa) are the best means to eradicate one’s troubles – this is what we have been taught by Islam and this is what I have practiced whenever any hardship has arisen.” Another student asked Huzooraba how they can preach to those people who live in villages where people work with corps and undertake other laborious work and so may not have much time. After directing the students on how Tabligh could be done in rural areas, Huzooraba narrated
a personal incident of preaching from the time when he was a student. Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba said: “Where there is an earnest desire to do Tabligh work, new ways and avenues will emerge. I remember when I was studying in university, Majlis Khuddamul Ahmadiyya instructed that we should go out for Tabligh. So as young men we went by bike to the rural villages. There, we would offer to help the farmers with their work, such as watering the crop and then out of courtesy they would sit with us and speak for a while. In this way, we had the opportunity to introduce the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community to them. So even if you go into the villages, if you have the desire, then ways can always be found… It all depends on you – how efficient you are and how much passion you possess. If someone does not have a passion then he thinks, ‘why bother with work?’ But if they have a desire then they make use of even the smallest of opportunities.”

“It is the responsibility of Ahmadi youth to void all negative influences. For this, where high morals are needed, in which all acts of virtue and discharging the rights of God and His creation are included, in the same instance physical appearance is also in need of reformation. Every Ahmadi Khadim should appear decent from his appearance. The face, the style of hair, clothes should be such that draws the attention of others. If you wish to do fashion, then it should be such which is fashion but also shows a difference from others. Some boys adopt a strange appearance by getting strange haircuts, or having products applied to their hair such as creams and gels. I observe that even on Eid they do not wear toppis [caps] so that their hair is not ruined… All these matters that I have elaborated I have done so because those who call towards God Almighty, their temperaments and physical appearances should be such which affect the hearts of the onlookers.” 50

hilafat is a divine source of guidance and being an Ahmadi Muslim I believe we are immensely fortunate to experience this on a day-to-day basis. Even though some of us cannot physically see our beloved Khalifah every day we still have a powerful spiritual connection with him. Personally, I have experienced a connection with Khilafat in a variety of different ways. One example is the satisfaction and reward when you write to beloved Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba for prayers. There are a multitude of examples that I can narrate on acceptance of prayers but the one I have selected is from the time when I moved to the UK and claimed
asylum in order to escape persecution in Pakistan. During this initial period, I was moved to a detention centre where I was held for almost 5 weeks. The availability of a fax machine in the detention centre meant I wrote to beloved Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba for prayers every day. I had a great desire to attend my first ever Jalsa Salana UK and expressed this through various letters to Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba. For various reasons, the first detailed interview regarding my detention could not be completed in the initial meeting and it seemed very unlikely that I would be able to attend Jalsa Salana that year as it was a mere three weeks away. Despite this, I had faith and continued writing letters to
Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba daily. After a long week, I was informed of the decision of my case – it was rejected. I was shocked, worried and mostly saddened that I will now definitely miss Jalsa Salana UK. At this point I increased the number of letters I sent to Huzooraba, sending him 2 letters a day. I appealed the decision and my court hearing was scheduled with just two weeks to go until Jalsa. The day prior to my hearing, I phoned the Private Secretary’s office and requested if they can pass my request for special prayers to Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba. I was interviewed in court for several hours. Once the judge was happy that she had all the necessary information, I was informed that due to her busy schedule she wouldn’t be able to give a decision on my case anytime soon. This meant that, even if within the next week there was a positive decision, I would still miss Jalsa Salana. I immediately wrote a letter to Huzoor-e-Aqdasaba explaining the whole situation. Early the next morning, my phone rang whilst I was still half asleep. It was a call from my solicitor in which he informed me that he had some good news. He had just received a fax from the Home Office that I had been granted Refugee status. I was in shock for a while because the news came so unexpectedly. My heart was full of praise to Allah for He had listened to the prayers of the Khalifah. To this day, it astounds me that I was the recipient of the blessings of those prayers.

unintelligent.’ For example, if one joins any association or gathering, it would be natural to elect the Khalifatul-Masih as he holds the highest status with Allah, so he would be elected president. As a result, the training gained by working as a president will be neglected, and the Jama’at will be deprived of this experience. Thus, I have especially advised them not to include intellectuals and scholars, so they can work and gain experience by doing things themselves. However, you can
A Khadim asked Huzooraba “how can one purify themselves?” Huzooraba stated, “every night before sleeping reflect upon what you have done during the day and you will see that slowly you will be purified.” On another occasion, Huzooraba was asked the same question to which Huzoor responded “something which you cannot do in front of others, do not do in private.”
and how it will nurture and develop the minds of young individuals. He said: “I have frequently reminded the Jama’at that a nation cannot be reformed without reforming its youth. If the new generations are devoid of faith and the principles established by Allah the Almighty through His Prophets, the nation cannot develop and take a step forward. Of course, development will happen, but it will happen and stop, or it will prosper, but then hardships will occur. This way, it will rise and fall like the mountains. But hardships are not a good thing, rather they are bad, and should be dealt with as fast as possible. Thus, it is clear that [especially in this era] without proper training, one cannot deliver the true message of Islam to the world. It is crucial to cultivate and improve the upbringing of children and women. If one wants to ensure the success of Tehrik-e-Jadid, then he needs to establish associations for young people just like there are for Lajna Imaillah. When this idea arose in some young individuals in Qadian, they set up an organisation named Khuddamul Ahmadiyya with my permission. As it is beneficial to work with people of a similar nature, I permitted them to include people with similar experiences. But I also urged them, if possible, to have other individuals and also to consider that those who join gain interest in helping. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF HAZRAT KHALIFATUL-MASIH V ABA POLITICS
On 28 February 2021, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba held a virtual mulaqat with male members of the Waqf-e-Nau Scheme from the UK. Huzooraba was asked how a Waqf-e-Nau medical student should study to ensure that he becomes the best possible professional for the benefit of humanity, in order to fulfil the pledge of being a Waqf-e-Nau. In response, Huzooraba stated: “A medical student should study regardless of whether he is a Waqf-e-Nau or not. You will not attain a degree if you do not study well. Indeed, whether you are a medical student or studying any other field, concentrate in your studies and, alongside this, pay attention towards prayers. Increase your connection with Allah. Offer your five daily prayers at their appointed time. If an atheist studies and works hard whilst not believing in God, it does not matter; he will receive his recompense from Allah the Almighty for the efforts he puts into his studies. But an Ahmadi Muslim is someone who believes in Islam, in the existence of Allah the Almighty and has certainty that Allah helps him. So, along with his studies he will also have to prove that he has a connection with Allah the Almighty. Do not think that just because an atheist attains success, therefore you should attain success too [without

prayer]. There is a difference between the two and you have to consider this difference. It is a very subtle difference and you will have to bear this in mind. If you keep this in mind, you will have a connection with God and you will pay attention towards your studies and you will then be able to achieve your targets.” One student asked what they should give priority to if they are studying, whilst, at the same time, volunteering in various roles within the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. In reply, Huzooraba said: “Those who are studying in university should see if they can do justice to their Community responsibilities along with their studies. If they cannot do justice then they should mention to their superiors that for a certain time, and particularly during exam periods, it is not possible for them to serve fully. At such times, focus upon your studies. However, other than the time you spend on your studies (at weekends and other free time) utilise it for service of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. You should not waste your time in futile pursuits.”

Although I have said to ask for advice from [scholars], if you write anything, write it yourself, so you feel responsible for it even if you feel extremely worried. So, they read books and asked people regarding what ideas to address. After this, they wrote essays and reviewed them multiple times. But when they finally presented the articles, they were written brilliantly. I have realised that their articles are on par with other articles. Even if it takes them a month or two to produce something that people like me, who are well versed in writing, can produce in one or two hours without any aid: while it took them ten people working for a month to produce it but what resulted is that the spiritual knowledge hidden from their eyes appeared in front of them; they read and expanded their knowledge. If they continue this, many works of literature like the recorded books of Islam, commentary of Islamic texts, books of Ahadith, books of jurisprudence, the books of Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas and many more like this will appear in front of them, and their souls will thrive with knowledge.” Hazrat Musleh Maudra also emphasised that community branches outside of Qadian should also set up Khuddamul Ahmadiyya in their respective regions. He also advised on how each Khadim should act. He stated that “You should forget that anyone else in Qadian is left for this role. You should understand as if you are the only one who has been tasked with this responsibility, as one cannot call himself a true believer if he implies that this is my role and that is your role. A true believer is not one that chooses his responsibilities”. Indeed, from this we learn that Khuddamul Ahmadiyya was formed with high expectations from the second Khalifah. It is when we understand our role as Khuddam that we can work towards fulfilling the grand task of reforming our youth.

uzooraba took a lot of care of us while we were here, down to the smallest details. During one class he began asking us how the food is. A few students said it’s normal Langar food: Daal, Aloo Gosht and occasionally pasta. I had been craving buttered chicken for the past week so I jokingly asked Huzooraba if we could have buttered chicken. Huzooraba laughed and jokingly said there was a lot of fat in butter which was not good for my health. I jokingly replied that I would have less butter and more chicken. Huzooraba laughed but said he agreed that they should make food that everyone wants to eat so that people do not feel the urge to go out and get fast food since going outside into public places and restaurants was a risk due to COVID-19. I thought that that was the end of that. The day after that class Huzooraba came for Asr prayer as usual. However, after prayers he came outside into Masroor Hall where our class was staying. He came and inspected our beds and sleeping area. As we had just moved in not to long before, many of us still had their clothes in their suitcases. I had recently ordered quite a few things online and they were scattered all over my bed
and my area. I was not next to my bed so Huzooraba asked one of my classmates whose bed this was to which he replied it was Sarfraz’s bed. Huzooraba said that it was very messy and then continued to the rest of the beds. He noticed that most of us were living out of our suitcases so he instructed Sadr Khuddamul Ahmadiyya to get some sort of cupboards to put our clothes in. Then Huzooraba made his way to the kitchen and the first thing Huzooraba said to the chefs as soon as he walked in was “Aap ko buttered chicken banana ata hai?” [Do you know how to make buttered chicken?] The chefs were startled at this question and said yes and instantly began reciting the recipe for buttered chicken and describing how it was made. Huzooraba laughed and said that they should make it then. When I asked Huzooraba if we could have buttered chicken, I said it as a joke just to make Huzooraba laugh. I could not have imagined Huzooraba would come out, go to the kitchen and tell the chefs to make it for us! I realised how much love and attention Huzooraba was showing us. Two days later the cupboards arrived and we set up our areas. That day Huzooraba came out again to inspect our sleeping area. I had tidied up and
sorted my things away neatly, so I was looking forward to Huzooraba seeing the difference. But Huzooraba only inspected the area on the other side of the hall briefly before going back inside. I didn’t think too much about this until the next class when Huzooraba asked me if I had tidied my area. I said that I had. Huzooraba said it was quite unorganised last time. I explained that I had ordered a few things online and just left them lying around to open later. But I had packed them all away in the cupboards Huzooraba had gotten us. Huzooraba said “main doosri dafa tumhari jagah peh nahi aya taakeh tumhai yeh na lage ke main baar baar chaapah maarne aajata hoon” [I did not inspect your area the second time in case you start feeling like I have come to raid your area.] I laughed and said that I had organised everything in the cupboard. This was a beautiful example of Huzoor’saba compassion, he did not want me to feel embarrassed in case I had not yet been able to tidy up.”

Instead of usurping the rights of others, may they, according to the commandments of Allah the Almighty, fulfil the rights of one another. When materialistic people fail to do so, God Almighty draws their attention towards their responsibilities in His own way. May we, and people of the world understand this important point and make good our life in this world and the next. In the past year, we have been facing an extremely dangerous virulent disease. No country of the world is free from the pandemic and it has affected some more than others. However, it seems that the majority of the world does
not wish to consider the possibility that this pandemic may be a sign from Allah the Almighty about how we must fulfil our obligations and responsibilities. They do not wish to consider that Allah the Almighty may be trying to awaken us, to guide us and make us realise our duties. Thus, every Ahmadi Muslim should pay heed to the fact that they have been vouchsafed the responsibility of fulfilling a great task and in order to fulfil it, they must first create an atmosphere of love, affection and brotherhood within their Ahmadi Muslim environment and then bring the world under this flag which was raised by the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa which is the flag of the Oneness of Allah the Almighty. Every Ahmadi Muslim man, woman, youth, child and elderly person should make a pledge this year with the understanding that they must utilise all their faculties to bring about a spiritual and moral revolution in the world. May Allah enable every Ahmadi Muslim to do so.”

TACKLING RADICALISAT It is the youth of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community which is spreading the true teachings of Islam and safeguarded from radicalisation.
H
azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“Young people are being misguided and radicalised. They are being completely misled about the concepts of Jihad and martyrdom. This is leading to countless innocent people being murdered or treated in the most inhumane way… The young people being radicalised are being sent to create disorder in the name of an entirely senseless and false Jihad… On the other hand, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, under the leadership and guidance of Khilafat, is spreading a message of love, affection and peace throughout the world. We are doing this because the Promised Messiahas has proved this to be the true Islam. In Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and all other parts of the world our Community is united under the banner of peace… I am continually concerned and worried about our youth. I do not want even a single one of our youngsters to move far away from his or her faith, because that would be a means of wasting their lives and being devoid of the blessings and rewards of Allah the Almighty.” 80

AMILA’S RESPONSIBILITY True servants of God walk on the earth with humility and leave behind not a single trace of arrogance or pride.
H
azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“One point I wish to emphasise is that every office bearer, no matter their age or rank, must inculcate a spirit of true humility within themselves. Thus, whether you are a local Qaid, a Mohtamim, the national Sadr or an office bearer of any other rank or position, you must remain humble at all times. In chapter 25, verse 64 of the Holy Qur’an, Allah the Almighty has said that a distinguishing feature of His true servants is that they walk on the earth with humility and leave behind not a single trace of arrogance or pride… Whilst every Ahmadi has a duty to be humble, courteous and gentle, of course the office bearers have a particular responsibility in this regard. The Khuddam office bearers should be of a standard that even if they are provoked, and even if others seek argument with them, they should respond only by offering peace and security, through the greeting of ‘salam’ [peace] before peacefully removing themselves from that environment.”

such a religion. And the best way to show your gratitude is that you say Durood Sharif and Allah the Almighty says that since this person is the person whom I love more than anyone, any Prophet, so when you say Durood to him, then I will listen to your prayers as well. two?” Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba: “You see, Hindus have made different gods for different things and they believe that their prayers are only heard and listened. They believe that if only we pray to the idols, they will listen to our prayers and whatever we want will be achieved. But in the case of Durood Sharif, it is a different situation. Allah the Almighty says that the Holy Prophetsa is a human being and he is the person whom He loves more than any person in the world. And he has brought you the final Shariah - the final law from Allah the Almighty - which contains all the necessary things and this is also a blessing of the Holy Prophetsa or the blessing of Allah the Almighty through

Allah the Almighty says that you send Durood to the Holy Prophetsa but don’t think that he is something supernatural —he’s also a human being. But Hindus or other idol worshippers think their idols are something which can convey their message. Even they have, you see, made so many idols with wooden material or some clay or some other things. So how can a thing which you yourself have made be the messenger of your prayers or the person or the thing who can convey your message to Allah the Almighty! Here, Allah the Almighty did not say that when you are saying Durood, the Holy Prophetsa will convey your message. Allah the Almighty says, ‘Since I love this person, when you praise Him then I will accept your prayers, because you also love the person whom I love’. You see if your parents see that a person loves their children more than anyone else, they will like him and accept him and make him a friend. So in the same way, Allah the Almighty says that,

he Khalifah of the time has a personal connection with people of all backgrounds and all races. The content of the daily post of Khalifah of the time is an unbelievable matter for worldly people. People write personal letters to him, discussing their personal affairs. It is Khilafat that focuses on the pain of every Ahmadi of the world and the Khalifah of the time prays for them. Which worldly leader prays for the ailing? Which worldly leader is anxious for young women to get married and prays for them? Which worldly leader is concerned about the education of children? Indeed, governments provide education and also provide health service but it is only the Khalifah of the time who is anxious for Ahmadi children to seek education and is anxious for them to have good health. There is no problem, be it of the Jama’at or of someone’s private life of which the Khalifah of the time is not aware, for which he does not make practical efforts and does not turn to God to pray!”

How can I explain to my classmates why I am not fasting?” Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba: “The Roza (fast) is obligatory on a mature person at the age of 17/18 right? If you are not mature, if you are growing – it is the age of nourishment. So, you can tell them it may hinder your nourishment, your growth. And at the same time, if you are studying and you are passing through your exams, then it can overburden you or you will not feel easy. So fasting is only obligatory on those who are mature and have attained the age of 17/18 and for whom there is no growth issue in terms of the physical body growth, nor brain development issue.”
FRIDAY SERMON 28TH MAY 2021

FRIDAY SERMON 28TH MAY 2021 ship with Khilafat and the relationship of Khilafat with them is for the sake of the pleasure of Allah. This is the true Khilafat in which the relationship of the Jama’at and the Khalifah is due to the pleasure of Allah and this is the Khilafat which is the basis of strength and peace.” Huzooraba stated: “Those people who, in Germany and other places, migrated after 1974 and have gained wealth, they should tell their children how the enemies tried, and how under the blessings of Khilafat Allah the Almighty gave them wealth which was thousands of times more than before.”
T
he Friday Sermon delivered on the 28th of May by Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba described how Ahmadis can benefit from Khilafat by performing righteous deeds. Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba expounded on the progress of Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya and drew the attention of the Jama’at towards offering the five daily prayers and being righteous to fully benefit from the institution of Khilafat. Presented below are some points from the Friday Sermon: Huzooraba stated: “Yesterday was 27 May in which Jalsa Khilafat is celebrated. There are Jalsas so that we are acquainted with the history of the Jama’at and so that after coming into the Bai’at of Khilafat we discharge our responsibilities so that we gain the blessings of Allah. Allah the Almighty has blessed us that we have accepted the one sent by God, who came to tell us the true teachings of Islam. Then after him we came into the Bai’at of Khialfat so that we can apply those teachings to us and continue to
propagate them in the world. Thus, being attached to Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya places a huge responsibility upon Ahmadis. If we discharge that responsibility, it is only then that we pay due to the blessing” Huzooraba stated: “If there is no offering the Prayers, Zakat and the rights that we owe to others then you cannot absorb the blessings of God. Only getting acquainted with our history and celebrating Khilafat Day is not enough. Until we do not become proper worshippers—those who guard their prayers, those who discharge the rights owed to others—till then there is no point celebrating Khilafat Day. We ought to evaluate our conditions. Do we possess the fear and Taqwa of God?” Huzooraba stated: “Those people who truly obey Khilafat are the ones who possess a relationship of loyalty towards Khilafat. They protect Khilafat and Khilafat protects them. The prayers of the Khalifah are with them. Their pain draws the Khalifah to pray for them. It is those who perform righteous deeds whose relation-
Huzooraba stated: “Now the era of the Fifth Khalifah which has started is due to the prophecy of the Holy Prophetsa. After the advent of the Promised Messiahas many new chapters have begun in the history of Islam. The era of the Fifth Khilafat is also a new chapter. The enemies thought that the progress of the Community would stop. But the true hand is that of God.” Huzooraba stated: “Then to establish a connection with Khilafat, Allah the Almighty has opened up a new way, which has emerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic which is the online or virtual mulaqats. Meetings and mulaqats are taking place. This is a direct connection with the Communities [around the world] and they are taking direct guidance from the Khalifah-e-Waqt. Sitting here in London I meet Ahmadis from Africa, Indonesia, Australia and America and they take guidance from me. This is all the help of God. We should never forget that God is blessings us so we should discharge our rights.”

azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“The most important and significant form of worship is to offer the five daily prayers. At various places in the Holy Qur’an, Allah the Almighty has commanded us to offer the five obligatory prayers, and so if we are negligent in our prayers it means our declaration of faith in Allah is meaningless, without value and false… The Promised Messiahas taught that a true Muslim is he whose heart and soul are intoxicated with the love of Allah and consumed by the belief that He alone is worthy of worship. This is the standard required, otherwise, a person’s proclamation of faith in Allah is reduced to superficial and hollow words.”

azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“We are living in an era, where at every turn, we are exposed to indecency, immorality and harmful vices that seek to lure mankind away from virtue and drag them towards sin. More than ever before, it is necessary for a believer to protect himself from the countless evils and immoralities that pervade society. For this, we must use that method which Allah the Almighty has Himself given us, which is to bow down before Him five times each day. This is the path to salvation and those who walk upon it are not only saved from Allah’s Wrath but are the recipients of His Love, His Grace and His great Rewards.”

REFORMING THE YOUTH It is important that we make the slogan of Khuddamul Ahmadiyya a part of our lives and understand the philosophy behind it.
H
azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“It is not enough to merely repeat this slogan or to have it printed on posters or badges, rather you must understand its true meaning and the underlying philosophy behind these profound words… The reason the Second Caliph of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community assigned this slogan to Khuddamul Ahmadiyya was to emphasise how important it was for the youth to not only gain secular education, but above and beyond this, to constantly develop their relationship with Allah the Almighty… These words reinforce and reiterate the fact that the success of our Community and our nation is directly linked to the spiritual and moral state of the youth. If every Khadim pays heed to this then it will enable them to follow the commands of God Almighty and to stay away from immorality and wrongdoing.”

QUALITIES OF A KHADIM You should all develop to become compassionate, loving, and considerate of others.

azrat Khalifatul-Masih Vaba said:
“As you leave this Ijtema today, you should do so with the firm and sincere intention to always speak the truth, and to act with honesty at all times, and under all circumstances all Khuddam should understand that speaking the truth and acting with integrity is the means of gaining the nearness of Allah, whilst falsehood is equivalent to shirk — that is associating partner with God. Those who purposely lie or deceive are no different to the idol worshipers who make falsehood their god, and who think that they will benefit from lying whilst fearing they will suffer if they adhere to the truth. Another very important quality and virtue that you should all develop is to become compassionate, loving, and considerate of others. Seek to establish the ties of mutual love, brotherhood and harmony.
