ABOUT ME Address 592 East Mutton Hollow Road Kaysville, UT Phone Number 385-225-5455 Email matthewlanderson@msn. com

My name is Matt. I have have recently graduated with my Master’s of Architecture degree from Arizona State University. I have always felt drawn to the field of architecture, although it took me some time to figure out that this field was what I actually wanted to pursue. As a small child, I was always designing and building and my parents frequently supplied me with paper for drawing and tools to build. I always enjoyed making plans and then following through with building them. My first ventures with design began as a child designing and building go karts, to later designing and building a shed in the backyard for birds of prey. As I grew older I took on other small projects like designing bookshelves and a mantel in my family’s living room. I later tried out some other things including obtaining a bachelor’s of science degree in exercise physiology but still felt drawn back to design. When contemplating my future career, I continued to feel a pull towards the field of architecture, which finally led me to pursue my M.Arch degree. I love the ability that architecture has to influence the people who dwell and move in the spaces and the ability that it has to make a difference for good in the world. What better way to improve the world we live in than by improving the spaces that we dwell in and interact with on a daily basis? As a new grad I have taken time to consider what my architectural philosphy is, and what my value system entails. I believe that Architecture should not be built as a monument to the Architect, but it should be built with the user in mind. I believe in quality craftsmanship and highlighting the beauty of the surroundings. Collaboration, listening to clients and understanding their needs is essential to build what they have envisioned, allowing us to build on that vision to create something even better. Architecture is only worth what it can do for those that interact with it.

To maintain a healthy living, we as humans must connect with nature frequently. It’s at our roots. All too often, this element has been overlooked in our cities resulting in a less than ideal situation. River Esplanade is a model of healthy, biophilic living that seeks to provide these elements for the residents and community and show how it might be accomplished. Although Timber as a building material has been used for thousands of years, recent advances in technology allow it to be used in a more sustainable and rigorous way. River Esplanade uses innovative structural and ecological methods to create a modern and healthy example of what is now possible. CLT(CrossLaminated-Timber) is utilized, along with a wood latticework that graces the structure, covering the historic Terracotta office building that still stands on the site, embracing the past, and also welcoming a sustainable and healthy future.

For this project we were given the assignment to place 50 dots on a page and then connect each dot to every other dot. From the web of lines that we created, we were asked to generate a structure that incorporated each of the lines as either primary or secondary structure or other elements of construction. The following pavillion shows how the lines and dots informed the design.

The site for this building is the southern Phoenix warehouse district. Although the area has undergone recent growth in some ways, the majority of the district remains to rust and deteriorate. The Reclaimed Studio seeks to take back this old part of the city and give new life to old materials. The site is reclaimed through several means. The existing parking garage is re-purpased as an architecture school providing flexible use of space. The site collects water runoff from the monsoon season and holds it in a riparian habitat. Walking trails, garden space and study areas are open to architecture students and the public alike. Solar is collected through a series of panels on top of the structure. A rooftop cafe and event center fill an important need for the area, and draw people from Phoenix and its surrounding cities. Most importantly, old, local materials are reclaimed and given new life and purpose.

Novus firestation The Novus Site is a master plan that sits next to Arizona State University. In the next decade there will be a need for another fire station due to the increased population and expanded metropolitan area. This project is located next to a power plant and is very much off the beaten path. It seeks to create an inner micro environment that is healing for the fire fighters that are exposed to traumatic experiences on a regular basis. A structural design that allows the roof to undulate up and down allows for natural light to penetrate the building. A focus on biophilia is present through the use of a few targeted green walls. The building also houses a climbing wall. A large courtyard space and a shou sugi ban exterior.

Puerto Rico, a territory of the United States has been in many ways forgotten by the main land. The infrastructure is in poor condition and many buildings have been abandoned. 1 in 10 buildings is vacant at the present moment. Many of those are elementary schools. among the struggles that the island is facing is a water quality problem. There are several super fund sites, along with coal burning plants that have exacerbated the problem. This layered analysis was to gain an understanding of what water quality issues were present in relation to the Catano Site which sits next to a nature preserve.

the water project La Escuela Teodoro Roosevelt sits on a plot of land that was once wetland. Allowing our site to once again become a wetland was a critical move for our project. This caused water to encompass many of the old CMU buildings on the site. Although the original 18 structures are still utilized, they retain a consistent architectural language as strategic elements are stripped from them leaving ruins throughout the wetland. Also, by having all new construction elevated to touch the site only lightly we are allowing natural processes to continue unobstructed. Circulation is also elevated off the wetland to reduce footprint. Experiences with water are celebrated throughout the project. New structures are added to the site utilizing bamboo as a natural façade and roof material. Thus, as bamboo and concrete elements come together an obvious contrast between new and old is apparent. A boardwalk that brings eco-tourists from the east continues through the site and is pulled up to rest atop buildings. This boardwalk becomes a major link tying important elements to the wetland.

CATANO, PUERTO RICO Facility is utilized as shelter during hurricanes and other emergencies. Includes temporary housing. Utilized as resort housing other times in the year SIte connects with boardwalk from catano ferry and pulls tourists to the site Circulation is pulled through site and above buidings to connect surrounding infrastructure Flood plain is allowed to hold water to create a riparian habitat and experience with water. Water is also purified and re-charged on the site New construction is pulled up above the site to allow natural processes to continue unobstructed 14

farming the future I believe the main difference between farming now and one hundred years from now is a stronger relationship between farmer and the natural world. This project seeks to find a way to define that relationship. The setting is the lower Verde River floodplain located within Cottonwood Arizona.

Building on a rich history of farming and education, a research center is built on the historic footprint of my aunt and uncle’s ranch that overlooks the valley to the North and East. Research is conducted on a small-scale version of the farmland that is maintained at the center of the facility. As farmers, researchers and residents of the valley involve themselves in understanding better ways to farm, a culture of empathy will begin to develop. As all seek ways to benefit their neighbor, human and not, this pattern of care will grow, eventually spilling out of the valley itself, and on.
