New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP President’s Greetings
Dear Members and Supporters of the NAACP Newark Branch, On behalf of the entire membership of the NJSCNAACP it is my pleasure to greet you and to thank you for attending the NAACP Newark Branch Freedom Fund Dinner 2012. I appeal to all members and supporters of economic, education, political and social equality for all residents to do everything possible to encourage all eligible New Jersey residents to register and vote in the General elections on Tuesday November 6, 2012. There is so much at stake with this election that no one should find a reason not to vote. I also remind New Jersey residents that we must vote in every election in 2012, and just as importantly, all elections during 2013, when there will be elections for the entire New Jersey legislature and the Governor. We should all take time to reflect on the progress and accomplishments of the NAACP over the past 103 years. As we reflect on the accomplishments of the past we must face the challenges that confront the NAACP and its determination to eliminate racial discrimination and racial hatred now and in the future. I am proud and honored to recognize, commend and celebrate former leaders of the NAACP Branch, some of whom are here tonight. I sincerely thank each and every one of these courageous and dedicated civil rights leaders who gave so much of the their time, talents and personal resources for the benefit of all residents in Newark, the state and the nation. Special thanks and recognition are appropriate for President Joyce Simmons. I also thank all individuals and organizations that support the NAACP with your ads and sponsorships. I congratulate all of the honorees, who are being awarded for their support of the NAACP and civil rights advocacy in Newark. I encourage all of you to continue to support the NAACP Newark Branch by renewing your membership and encouraging your family, friends and colleagues to join the NAACP so we can move forward in advocating for equal employment opportunities, high quality public education for all students, safe affordable housing, high quality affordable health services, reduction in violence and reversal of the patterns of obesity and unwed parenthood as well as reform of the criminal justice system that results in the disproportionate arrest, conviction and incarceration of African Americans and Latinos. Remember Freedom is not free. Please join the NAACP today and attend meetings and other activities sponsored by the NAACP Newark Branch. Sincerely, James E. Harris President, NJSCNAACP
It’s my pleasure to welcome you to our 98th Annual Freedom Fund Awards Dinner! This year our theme is: “Your Power, Your Decision: Vote!”
Newark Unit, NAACP President’s Greetings
As the President of Newark Branch, NAACP, I am committed to the growth and development of our community, our youth, and local and state government issues that affect us all. The success of our chapter would be merely impossible without your active support and of course, our members. We continue to make strides to tackle real issues that impact our lives, such as our educational system, our housing market with the rise of foreclosures, and high unemployment rates. As part of our commitment, we continue to have a strong community involvement, and continue to listen and take action. We have recently joined forces with other great community leaders, such as Bronze Shield and People’s Organization for Progress. We look forward to our new initiatives created as we improve on such issues mentioned before. It is essential that we all come together, take a stand, and unite for the betterment of the City of Newark and the future of our children. Moving forward, we all know that the Presidential Election is right around the corner, Tuesday, November 6th and I urge each and every one of you to go out and vote. You have one voice, one vote, so please use it. Every vote counts and yours matter. Our ancestors have fought for us to have the right to vote and many of us don’t exercise our rights. No longer shall we sit around and watch things happen but make a commitment to strive for a better community. We encourage you to spread the word, tell your family, your friends, your neighbors. We determine our destiny; don’t let someone else determine it for you. We welcome all of you to continue the fight and join NAACP of Newark Branch as we continue to spread the word and fight to get our voice heard. Sincerely, Joyce Simmons President, NAACP – Newark Branch
Reverend Ralph M. Branch, Jr. Freedom Fund Dinner Co-Chairperson It has truly been an honor and privilege to serve as Co-Chairman of our 98Th Annual Freedom Fund Dinner. Robert Gregory for his inspirational and challenging message. It is my prayer that each of us will leave tonight inspired to make a positive impact on our community and society. In this pivotal moment in the history of our country and the vitality of the NAACP, it is important that we all do our part to bring about change. We have come so far, but we yet have so far to go. Change is within our reach, remember, “Your Power, Your Decision-VOTE!
John Jewell Jr. Freedom Fund Dinner Co-Chairperson In this election year, we must look back at those who came before us. We must remember those who were denied their right to vote. Some were beaten and some paid the ultimate sacrifice for the right to make change. We must always remember that voting was not a gift given but a right earned. Your one vote can be that vote that changes the world. Thank you for supporting the 98th Newark NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner.

Aminifu Robert Gregory Keynote Speaker April 16, 1974 -
Aminifu Robert Gregory is a Newark native and graduate of West Chester University, where he majored in Secondary Social Studies Education and was a member of the Golden Rams football team. After graduation, he returned to Newark to teach social studies in the Newark Public Schools and was awarded for innovative teaching practices on the district and state level. As a history teacher, he led a group of 8th graders from Camden Middle School to a nationally recognized, Project Citizen Portfolio, a civics related curriculum where students propose legislation aimed at improving the quality of their living conditions while gaining the skills necessary to be civically engaged citizens. After graduating from Seton Hall University with an MA in Educational Leadership and Management, Gregory served in a number of positions in the Newark Public Schools including district coordinator for the New Jersey Network for Educational Renewal and an award-winning Supervisor of Social Studies for the entire 82 school districts. As a Supervisor, Gregory spearheaded the revision of all history curricula and revised the district’s curriculum writing template, which was recognized as a model for the state of New Jersey. He also played an integral role in writing the Teaching American History Grant, a million dollar grant aimed to improve History Teachers’ pedagogical and content knowledge. Gregory is credited with raising student achievement and innovative practices in Social Studies education. Presently, he is the principal of American History High School, a magnet school in Newark and first of its kind in the state of New Jersey. As principal, Gregory ensured that 100% of his students graduated high school in 4 years of which 97% gained admissions into 4 and 2-year colleges. Moreover, Gregory increased the number of AP courses and Honors courses at the school from 7 to 35 in a three- year period of time. All the students at American History High School have the opportunity to graduate from high school with 16 college credits, due to the partnership Gregory established with Essex County College and Rutgers University. Gregory was the recipient of the N.A.A.C.P’s Educational Advancement award in the 2010 for his work at American History High School and years of service in the Newark Public Schools. Grounded in Gregory’s educational philosophy is all students can learn if provided the proper resources and services. We must guide the creative and academic talents of our youth through the arts, to insure that our students are socially, culturally, and academically exposed to and prepared for the world. We must provide every young person with the resources that they need now, while they are in our care. Most importantly, we must show that we value them, so that they value themselves.”
Linda McDonald Carter, Esq. Social Justice Award Honoree Linda McDonald Carter currently serves as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Paralegal Studies Program at Essex County College. Her humble beginnings started over five decades ago during the tumultuous 50’s and the Civil Rights era that evolved into the Black Power Movement. Linda blossomed early as an activist, protesting the Vietnam War at the tender age of 12. She vividly recalls seeing the world through the eyes of the media and Perry Mason versus the realities she witnessed daily growing up in the Scudder Housing Projects located in the heart of Newark’s Central Ward. She vowed then to become an attorney to help her community navigate the justice system and to make a difference. Throughout her experiences, she gained an appreciation and deep respect for History of the African Diaspora and the political “isms”. She enrolled in Upward Bound at Bloomfield College, studied Political Science at Rutgers University, participated in CLEO (Continuing Legal Opportunity Program) at Howard University and completed her studies in law at Rutgers University. Upon completing her undergraduate studies, Linda began to professionally serve her community. She worked tirelessly as Resident Manager of Scudder Home Housing Project, advocating for fellow tenants and building repairs. These efforts landed her a job as Section 8 Manager with Newark Housing Authority (NHA). While in law school, she worked for United States Senator Bill Bradley before moving to Southern California where she became heavily involved with various grassroots and political initiatives. She put her academic training to work registering voters, negotiating political struggles, learning to manage the media press while learning to better understand the principles of domestic and international politics. After living five years in California in some of the wealthiest communities in the country, she migrated back to her roots in NJ. Initially, she worked with the New York/New Jersey Motor Voter program. In 1989, she began her current career teaching full time at Essex County College where she now directs paralegal studies and provides instruction in American Government, African American History, US History, English and Film. Simultaneously, in 1990 she held the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel in East Orange. In 1992, she opened her own law firm before joining with two colleagues to form Richardson, Powell and Carter LLC, one of the first African American law firms in NJ. During this time, she also served as an Assistant Public Defender for the city of Orange. Linda is extremely dedicated and active in her community, volunteering with various organizations. Newark is where her heart is. It is the place she calls home and relentlessly works to improve. She has garnered a gubernatorial appointment to the Advisory Board of the Newark Public Schools District, served as a volunteer instructor for Rutgers Project CORE, served as a member of Advocate for Newark’s Children, served on the Newark Museum Advisory Committee and as a board member for University Heights Science Park. More recently she serves as an elder for the grass root umbrella organization, Voices of Change and Liberation (VOCAL). Tribute to Congressman Donald Payne By Eddiemae Livingston
There were many, who doubted that it could be done, But Councilman Payne has resoundingly won! To Congress he will go in 1989 To represent your interests and mine. Now everyone knows, as strange as it seems, There are no more impossible dreams. But let us pause and review, if you willEvents that led to the filling of this bill: With the YMCA for over three decades, Helping people worldwide was his stock and trade. He was National President and in that spot He worked very diligently and accomplished a lot. An experienced youth leader throughout the world, A role mode indeed, for any boy or girl. We need him in Congress, he understands our needs, As a worldwide traveler, he was in demand, We have no doubts but that he will succeed. And he possessed great knowledge of the issues at hand. The problems of our area he certainly understands, Twice elected Councilman and school teacher, too Former executive with the Insurance Company Pru. And for their solutions he’s developing plans. Pro-Labor, Pro-Peace, with Justice, too, He is honest, hard-working and cares about us, Women’s Right Advocate-to name just a few. He performs his duties with very little fuss. Of the Chosen Freeholders, a Director was he; Quiet and soft-spoken- a joy to knowAnd is a Life Member of the NAACP. Widely received wherever he does go For police protection, he advocated more funds, He believes in the future and with hard work and faith, And worldwide praise he has certainly won. In every major battle he has come through unscathed. Constructive character building with wayward youth, In character-building activities he will engage, He impressed upon them the importance of Truth. Against Crime and Corruption a battle he will wage. Against the drug flow he worked very hard, Unemployment and Drug Abuse he will combat And obtained for Seniors an I.D. With honors graduated from Seton Hall U, Affordable Housing he does advocate. Preparing himself for the job he must do. The cries of the homeless, our elderly’s pleas, Of Urban Data Systems he is Vice-President Our youth’s aspirations- he will address all of these! Assuming leadership is his natural bent. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, I have tried to explain A family man and father of two, Why we are busting with pride for Congressman Payne! He raised them alone with no “hullabaloo”.
