Greetings!

From the New Jersey ACT-SO Chairperson Welcome to the 28th New Jersey Afro, Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics. Our mission is to prepare, recognize and reward African American youth who exemplify scholastic and artistic excellence. Also, to assist our youth in helping them to discover their God given gifts, talents, abilities and encourage them to maximize their potential. Our theme this year is “Relating to our Past, Understanding our Present, and Preparing for the Future.” Our beginnings are not tied to slavery, but to great nations of Africa. Maya Angelou said “For Africa to me ... is more than a glamorous fact. It is a historical truth. No man can know where he is going unless he knows exactly where he has been and exactly how he arrived at his present place.” We as a people have made much progress since our journey through slavery, Jim Crow and racial segregation here in America. However, we are now living in a very critical period in time, given the new leadership of this nation. A leadership that appears to want to take us back to the racial conditions of 100 years ago. So, preparing strategically for the future is not an option but a necessity. The ACT-SO program has successfully proven for 38 years that our youth can succeed in the field of science, business, humanities, and visual and performing arts. Many have gone on to careers in those fields. We must continue to support, encourage and empower them to do so. This program is only successful because of the dedicated volunteerism of the adults who give of their time to mentor, coach, advise and work as a team to help develop our future leaders. Students: We applaud you for your efforts and accomplishments in the field of Humanities, Science, Business, Visual and Perform Arts. “Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise. I rise. I rise.” - Maya Angelou. Go forth young people and be the change this world needs to see. Coaches/Mentors: Your commitment and dedication in sharing your gifts, talents, knowledge and expertise with our youth is invaluable. What you do and give is critical to the success of this program. Parents: It is a challenge to raise children in this fast-paced open society. We must remember our heritage. It take a village to raise a child. Our children are our legacy and we stand with you. Program Advisors: I extend a special note of gratitude to you. You faithfully and lovingly give your time, money and energy to provide this opportunity to our youth. You believe in our youth and you ACT-SO! This program could not exist without you. Thank you all!!!!!! God Bless,

Rev. Sonya Redd

NJ State ACT-SO Chairperson

NAACP New Jersey State Conference 4326 Harbor Beach Boulevard # 775 Brigantine, New Jersey 08203 www.NJSCNAACP.org (609) 310-0211

Greetings ACT-SO 2017: I am proud to extend my sincere “congratulations” on behalf of the Officers, Executive Committee and Members of the New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP as you embark on another successful ACT-SO campaign. To my dear friend and your Chairperson Reverend Sonya Redd, I say “thank you” as you truly were the initiator and architect of the New Jersey ACT-SO program and have committed you’re life to empowering our youth through this phenomenal program for nearly 30 years. I personally would like to commend the entire ACT-SO Committee for their hard work and because of their commitment; I sincerely trust that this year’s campaign will be a huge success. We need our young people to be the healing agents of our national and world transformation and future spiritual and economic salvation. We need their energy – we need their passion – and we need their vision and ideas. We are at a critical point in the history of our nation. A time when we as a society must choose between two paths’ one leading to a renewed goal of togetherness as one united people working together for a better future for all of us; and another path that promotes division and a slide backwards, to a past that emphasizes difference and promotes intolerance Let us revive our commitment today, to supporting our young people like never before, to renewing our focus on voter education, mobilization and maintaining voting rights, making sure all children have access to a free, high quality public education, jobs, building systems of wealth, strengthening economic sustainability for all, ensuring public safety, improving Police and community relations and working to reform a broken criminal justice system. On behalf of the leadership of the NAACP New Jersey State Conference I urge you to roll up your sleeves and do all that is necessary to insure that “OUR LIVES MATTER, OUR VOTES COUNT.” Best Wishes,

Richard T. Smith President, NAACP New Jersey State Conference

NJ ACT-SO SCORES 28 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE The New Jersey Afro Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) were initiated in 1989. With the exception of our first year, NJ has captured national medals every year in numerous categories including science, business, humanities, culinary arts, visual and performing arts. A majority of NJ ACT-SO alumni are in college or have graduated. Many are working as productive citizens in their communities. Our success stories are proud ones. The NJ State Conference of the NAACP sponsors our program along with local community support. More than 6,000 area high school students have participated in ACT-SO workshops around the state that culminate in an annual statewide competition. The ACT-SO program is not a talent show. It is an academic and cultural enrichment program. As a result of their active participation, students gain enhanced self-esteem, self-discipline and skills through their interactions with accomplished adult coaches and judges. ACT-SO is a learning experience that raises the standard of excellence and expectation among our youth and mobilizes the adult community to serve as mentors, coaches and judges for students. ACTSO provides a safe haven for students to explore an exercise the academic and cultural abilities they have within themselves. The adult mentors who volunteer their time and expertise are professionals in the categories they mentor. These dedicated volunteers meet with students for a minimum of five months on a weekly basis prior to the competition. Through general informational workshops, field trips, small group and one to one sessions, mentors provide exposure and motivation for excellence. Generally the state competition is held in April with competition categories divided into the North and South regions of the state. Another group of about 150 adult volunteers conduct the annual oneday competition as judges and facilitators. Gold medalists from both regions have the opportunity to compete for cash prizes at the national competition held in conjunction with the July National NAACP convention. The NJ ACT-SO Program is also an approved partner of the NJ Governor’s Arts in Education Awards Program. The ACT-SO New Jersey Team graciously thanks all of the supporters of our 28th Annual Competition, Awards program and Showcase. The ACT-SO Village believes our children need to be nurtured, nourished disciplined and mentored. We believe our children need our attention and our love. We stand in unity for the future of our youth. IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN ACHIEVE‌THEN ACT-SO!

Lift every voice and sing

God of our weary years,

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;

Thou who hast brought

High as the listening skies,

Thou who hast by Thy might

Sing a song full of the faith that the

Keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Sing a song full of the hope

our God, where we met Thee,

Till earth and heaven ring, Let our rejoicing rise

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. dark past has taught us,

God of our silent tears, us thus far on the way; Led us into the light,

Lest our feet stray from the places,

that the present has brought us.

Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine

of our new day begun,

Shadowed beneath Thy hand,

Facing the rising sun

Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days

when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat,

Have not our weary feet Come to the place

for which our fathers sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,

We have come, treading our path through the blood

of the slaughtered,

Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam

of our bright star is cast.

of the world, we forget Thee; May we forever stand. True to our God,

True to our native land

CONGRATULATIONS! YOU ARE LOVED and BLESSED

My Beautiful Daughter Oriana You show the world that being a truly beautiful young lady of color isn’t about the hair or the hips or the talk. It’s about love. Fierce, forever love. The kind that’s passed down through the generations, hand to beautiful hand, each reaching out and pulling another through. May you fine enough inner strength to determine your own worth by yourself, and not be dependent on another’s judgment of your accomplishments. You have love, strength, beauty and faith. Love Mommy, Uncle B, Aunt Vanessa and Aunt Marsha
