Benediction ............................................................................................................ Minister Leroy Scott, Jr.
Kit Scott entered this world in February in the year of our Lord 1866 in the wholesome environment of Garnett, South Carolina, while Mary Pickney Gardner Scott in the year of our Lord 1877 in Sand Hill, South Carolina. They were joined in marriage in 1907. To this union eight children were born: twins, Mable Scott Butler and George Scott; Archie Scott; twins, Nancy and Louise Scott; Evelyn Scott; Leroy Scott, Sr.; and Stella Scott Jenkins (all deceased).
In addition to the above, Kit and Mary had eight children each from a prior marriage, which makes a total 24 children.
Kit Scott Clan: Sammie Scott, Sr.; Kit Scott, Jr.; Edward Scott; James Scott; Gipson Scott; Minner Scott; Arrie Scott; and Maggie Scott Williamson.
Mary Pickney Gardner Clan: Willie Gardner; James Gardner; Ben Gardner; King Gardner; Ella Gardner; Eddie Gardner; Richard Gardner; and Rosa Gardner Snooks.
“Good character is to be praised more than outstanding talent. Most talent is, to some extent, a gi . Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it piece by piece, by thought, choice, courage, and determination.” John Luther
Mary Pickney Gardner Scott, the daughter of Horace and Ella Pickney; and the sister of Eugene, Horace, James, and Eva Pickney Polite was a devout Baptist, a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Pineland, South Carolina.
Mary was a very modest person, who had a great deal of dignity and pride concerning her appearance in public. She chose “substance” over style, never ashy. Her clothing was neither, too tight, too big, too long or too short. Her hairstyle was a “page boy,” a part on the side curled under.
Around 1894, Mark Pickney married Eddie Gardner, son of James and Clarissa Gardner in Robertsville, South Carolina; from this union, God blessed them with eight children. Around October of 1906, Eddie Gardner left his mark on life. Around the year 1907, Mary Pickney Gardner married Kit Scott, son of Adam and Nancy Scott.
Mary Pickney Gardner Scott was the essence of womanhood as God planned. She was particular regarding “wastefulness.” She lived by example what she preached:
• “A lady could throw out more with a teaspoon than a man can bring in with a shovel”.
• “Never make a person happy twice, Glad to see you come and glad to see you go”.
• “Always make people feel comfortable at your home”.
• “Birds of a feather ock together”.
• “A rolling stone gathers no moss”.
And many other words of wisdom we, her family, her legacy live by, such as:
• “Look before you leap”.
• “A stitch in time saves nine”.
• “An empty wagon makes a lot of noise,” etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Mary’s love was the source of her survival and the gift to countless others. She loved gardening vegetables. She was exceptional at quilting and cooking. She canned and preserved the food that she grew in her garden during the summer to sustain herself, her family and friends through the long winter months. Never a need arose, that Mary was not there with a gift of love in her hand. “Never be found with empty hands or heart, Give the Gift of Love.”
Mary Pickney Gardner Scott was the owner of a “cane mill and boiler.” People would travel from the surrounding area to grind their canes and cook the syrup. She would assist her clients, who she adopted as her friends with the cooking of syrup. Many times on her own account, she would feed them while they worked. Most often she would accept ve gallons of syrup as a fair exchange of the usage of the facility, her services, and her love rendered.
Mary Pickney Gardner Scott embodied what John Luther referred to as, “Good Character” being built “piece by piece, by thought, choice, courage, and determination.”
• Mary Pickney Gardner Scott was self-educated in a time when education was considered wasted on a female, particularly a “Negro” female. She was segregated and isolated.
• Piece by piece, Mary Pickney Gardner Scott gathered herself.
• By thought, Mary Pickney Gardner Scott preferred to think of what her Master and Lord, Jesus Christ, thought of yokes of her time. She was somebody.
• By choice, Mary Pickney Gardner Scott refused to accept the restraints or yokes of her time. Instead, she chose to soar like an eagle.
• By courage, in the evening when the tutor came to her home, to teach her brothers, Mary Pickney Gardner Scott was relegated to her room for the night.
• By determination, Mary Pickney Gardner Scott sought their lesson books, which were hidden purposefully from her. She would regurgitate what she memorized by night, to put it in practice under the cloak of secrecy by day. Where there is a will, there is a way. Mary Pickney Gardner Scott had both, a will and a way!
“Mrs. Babe,” a nickname her husband, Kit Scott lovingly gave her. Also known as, “Mama” by her children and family, notwithstanding their spouses. And to her friends and neighbors, “Babe Scott” left this side of life at the age of 75 to return to her Lord in Zion. We miss her physical presence but rejoice and smile with the assurance of her spiritual presence in us, all. A job well done and a legacy intact!!!
Compiled by her great grandson, Reverend J-Anthony Dargan as told to him by his mother and her granddaughter who was named after her, Mary L. Scott Dargan

On behalf of the Pinckney Gardner Scott family, we give thanks to all those who volunteered for the various committee work, helping with the t-shirts, family website, CashApp, food, transportation, phone calls, emails, text messages, and all the work to make this reunion come together in only four months.
We give special thanks to those who came and to those who could not attend. Equal to anything said or done, we honor the generations and leaders of this family who rst started and organized all the preceding Pinckney-Gardner-Scott Reunions. The 2024 reunion did not begin from scratch—we stand on the strong shoulders, keen minds, and beautiful spirits of all those who came before us and build upon their work.
In the spirit of Sankofa, blessings to them, and in the spirit of love, let us make the 2026 Family Reunion even better!
