Senior Pastor Letter “Let’s Rekindle the Power” To our members and all friends, we give God the glory. We as a church congregation have completed 40 years of ministry. The number 40 is so prominent in the Bible from the days of Noah and 40 days of rain to Christ’s ultimate victory over temptation, which took 40 days of prayer and fasting. This is a time of prayer and praise, and power to and from almighty God. We have had 40 years of experience from the time of the pioneers to the most recent person who has become a member of God’s Supreme Love- “Agape.” Words are inadequate to express my gratitude to God, to all leaders, every member, and friends of this wonderful congregation. I will say it is the Spirit of God that has blessed our existence. It would not be interesting if everyone had to say yes if there was no opposition or temptation, if there was no falling out, relocation, spiritual confrontations, and victories. If there were no battle, we would not know how to fight, but thanks be to God He has taught us how to endure and overcome conflicts, and how to handle ourselves in the victory. As we rekindle the power, we have to be sober and vigilant because the enemy is still fierce and aggressive. We dare not ignore the power that accompany unity. We must encourage one another, bear one another’s burdens, forgive one another, comfort one another, correct one another and to remember our name and live accordingly to the name we have. We must not forget who we are and how God has blessed us and all of God’s promises to anyone who has faith in Him. I personally want to remind everyone that the word “Can’t” is not in God’s vocabulary. We should repeat daily, it is personal; I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. The Power is Active. Our calling is from the highest authority, who has commissioned us to represent Him in all the world. We dare give up. To God be the Glory. Senior Pastor Reverend Garven A Graham

Anniversary Committee Chariperson Letter Let me first give honor and exaltation to God, for enabling us to reach this milestone. Forty years as a congregation is no easy feat, but with God’s grace, mercies and continued blessings we have made it. As we celebrate this momentous occasion, we realize too we have come this far by Faith. On behalf of the Anniversary Committee, I want to congratulate Pastor Garven Graham, who has been there from the inception; for his insight, wisdom, and leadership. Where there is no vision, the people perished. To our Associate Pastor, Reverend Lascelles Edwards for coming on board and fitting in graciously as he has. Together you are able to work in harmony for the building up of the Kingdom, and the edifying of the saints. Working and spearheading the committee has been both exciting and challenging, and now we get to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Let me take this time to introduce the hard-working, dedicated members of the committee: Sister Lavern Taylor-Meeks, Sister Barbara Lindo, Sis Dianne Comrie, Sister Ruby Ricketts, Brother Matthew Ogle, and Brother Allan Priestley. Each person had their specific role, and they mastered it. Thank you all for a job well done. Again, on behalf of the committee, I congratulate Pastor Graham and the Agape Church of God congregation for forty years of dedicated service to the community.

Let me first give honor, thanks and praise to God for enabling the congregation to reach this milestone—40 years. The journey has been mixed with tears and laughter, pain and suffering, but Sincerely, asD.A. we CELEBRATE this momentous occasion, we realize too "we have come this far by Faith." Topey

Introduction To God be the glory. It has been 40 years of continual Ministry here at Agapé Church of God. It all started in 1977 when a group of members from the Prophetic COG of 130 West 129th Street decided to hold prayer meetings at the home of Deaconess Muriel Gray. After months of meetings for prayer and seeking the guidance from the Holy Spirit, we decided to establish a congregation in Queens considering most of the members in that prayer group resided in Queens. How We Progressed Our first service on a Sunday morning was held in Cunningham Park in Queens. After that, we convened services in a basement in Springfield Gardens. Homeowners in that community complained that a church would devalue their properties, so we relocated to the home of Sister Ruby Ricketts in Cambria Heights. We needed additional space, so we moved to a larger place, the home of Sister Mary Harris in Queens Village. During this period, we negotiated loyalty of the congregation. The first step was to get a name. Our pastor then was Reverend Louis Shockness. In searching for a name, we sought the advice of friends and Sister Carol Smith— blessed memory, suggested the name Agapé. We were able to get the New York State government to accept that name. Praise be to God! We didn’t fully realize at that time the impact of the name. We were incorporated and then obtained tax exemption from the IRS, in 1978. Purchase of a Building In 1980 being incorporated we pursued to purchase our own property at 198-14 Linden Boulevard, St. Albans, NY for $3,600. Members were not afraid to make a spiritual and financial commitment because uppermost in our minds we were advancing the kingdom of God. It was at this time Reverend Shockness resigned as pastor. Although it shook us, somehow, we knew that the Spirit of God was with us and therefore, Deacon Garven A. Graham, with leaders of the congregation operated for three years without a pastor. We were able to get recognition from the Eastern New York General Assembly of the Church of God and eventually was registered by the home office in Anderson, IN. In 1983, the congregation appointed Reverend Andrew Jennett as Pastor. He served us for more than five years then resigned. It was after his resignation that Minister Graven A. Graham was appointed Pastor in October 1988.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE AGAPÉ CHURCH OF GOD

The need for a larger building persisted as time went on, so we decided to purchase a larger building. Although there were many difficulties, the Spirit of God challenged us that if God is with us, we cannot fail. We negotiated the purchase of the building; we now occupy, for $525,000 in May 1991. Under the auspices of the congregation, we were able to establish the Agapé Community Service Inc., a tax-exempt organization. The intention was to have an organization qualified to obtain government funding for community development. Leadership We believe in the development of strong leadership, as we have been appointed to serve a Powerful God. We believe that loyal, devoted and, truthful leadership will advance the kingdom of God. We believe in God; we believe in Jesus; we believe in the Holy Spirit; we believe in the Holy Scripture; we believe in the Church; and we believe in God’s ultimate victory over evil. We have nurtured and developed these beliefs, so that they become our lives. We have organized various auxiliaries to accept and execute these ministries, to the honor and glory of God. Conclusion We mean to go right on until the victory is won. For this reason, we are committed to Holiness and Honesty in all our endeavors and to maintain Integrity. With the assistance of our Associate Pastor Reverend Lascelles Edwards, our leadership has become more equipped to accomplish God’s requirements through the training of our leaders and all our members. I want to thank all the Pastors in other congregation who have helped us; the families and community leaders, who have been faithful. I want to thank and acknowledge every member of the Agapé congregation, who has faithfully served this congregation and to remind everyone that whatever they were able to do, they do it unto the Lord. If God be for us, who can be against us? Praise Ye the Lord!

Psalms 126:3 “The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

We are truly blessed to be celebrating 40 years of this Faithful Christian walk and fruitful ministry. This occasion is an indisputable proof that God is with us and His Spirit is dwelling in our midst. No doubt we have come upon many hurdles and roadblocks in the maintenance and upkeep of our building and other pertinent obligations, but by the grace of our Lord and Savior, the will of our Pastors, members, families, and friends we were able to climb these hurdles without stumbling. We’ve come this far by faith, leaning on the Lord. If we continue to press on in the work of the Lord and seek His guidance, He will surely reward us because “He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him” Hebrews 11:6 It is truly with great delight that we the members of the Trustee Board salute Pastor Graham and the entire Agape Church of God families and friends on our 40 years of service to God and the community. “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; great is Thy faithfulness” Lamentations 3:22, 23.

Yours in the Lord’s Service Board of Trustees

DEACON BOARD 1 Corinthians 15:58, Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. The Deacon Board wants to praise and thank God for his favor, in keeping, sustaining, procuring and encouraging us through these 40 years and we will continue to employ His mercy for the proceeding years. Deacon Aubrey Ogle, Deacon Board President

MUSIC DEPARTMENT “O Sing unto the Lord, a new song. Sing to the Lord, all ye earth, sing to the Lord, bless His name.” The music department, realizing that “God inhabits the praise” of His children, has endeavored to promote praise to our God through the medium of hymns, anthems, spiritual songs, gospel, contemporary music, and Negro spirituals. Each Sunday our worship service is enriched by the Praise and Worship team, led by Brother Matthew Ogle, in a period of choruses of praise in which the congregation gets involved with much enthusiasm and vigor. We give thanks for the many children and young people, who have been involved in our children and youth choirs over the years. Special thanks to Sister Dona Simons for working so wonderfully with the children as they perform from year to year, and to Sister Barbara Lindo and Brother Matthew Ogle for working with the youth and young people. We trust that as they move into their various fields of endeavor, they will not forget the training and experiences received, but that these will help to mold their lives and draw them closer to God. Thanks to our faithful, young Bro. Maleek Simmons, who helps to keep the rhythm at the drums every Sunday. Thanks to our faithful Sanctuary Choir as they continue to minister in our worship services and on special occasions. The music ministry is of paramount importance in the life of the church and the inspiration of God’s people; we, therefore, will continue to work for the Lord in this field and pray that as we “sing joyfully to God, our strength,” souls will be won and encouraged through this ministry. Ruby R. Ricketts

BOARD OF EVANGELISM Congratulations to the Agape Church of God In achieving 480 Months in the Ministry! Such an achievement must come with a very special story. Integrity, Endurance, and Labour was the Order of your Effort as you press through the changing society around you. James 5:11 says, “Behold, we count them happy which endure.” Evangelism is the ability to give time, talent and treasure. Planting seeds in good ground and caring for its growth and maturity. The time you remain in this Production is proof you did well. Keep the ship asail and the Lighthouse beaming; you are battling rough seas. God bless you and keep you sailing. Lascelles Edwards, Associative Pastor, and Chairperson

GREETINGS

&Salutations

Greetings and salutation to Pastor Reverend Graham & Sister Graham, and the members of the Agape Church of God as we celebrate this 40th milestone of endurance. I would lift my praise to The All-Powerful Commander of the Church. I specifically want to say to the early starters of the Agape family, who are still walking the aisles Sunday after Sunday and standing as spiritual guards, taking on the changes and burdens that the ministry demands. I would like to encourage those like myself, who came in later and took their place to carry the mission call. To the wounded soldiers that still hold their positions in good times and in bad times. To those that accept the truth as it is revealed to them and lift the banner with the stain of blood knowing that we are paid for with the precious blood of Christ. Press on brothers & sisters, your reward is close at hand.

MAVIS OGLE A life so rich and loving, So generous and kind can’t help, But leave a legacy of memories behind. Sadly missing, Aubrey & Family

Written

September 23, 2009

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. At Tony’s graduation the guest speaker asked the crowd what are the two most important days of one’s life. He went on to say that two most important days in one’s life is the day you are born and the day you realized why God allowed you to be born. Many have never figured out what their purpose on earth is. I have realized we are all here for the same reason, that is to do God’s will. We all have our own individual talents, strength and, uniqueness but seldom live up to this potential because we get caught up with “life”. Unimportant things seem to consume us rather than focusing on what really matters, a true relationship with God.

Wade D. Buckley, Jr. (Fondly called “Wadie”) left us on November 14, 2009.

In order to live up to your full potential one must open themselves completely to the Lord and allow God to direct and guide you along the path He wants you to take. Some might be guided through green pastures while others may have to go through the darkest deepest valleys, but it is all for a reason. I have walked through some rough terrain and traveled through the valley for quite some time, many times wondering why? I understand now that I have been walking through the valley to help others who are stuck there. He wants me to show them there is a way out and that’s through Jesus Christ. I challenge everyone to be a better Christian, person, friend, family member and just live up to your true potential. Never settle for less than what you deserve or what God expects from you, You are not only cheating yourself but you cheat everyone else from the potential that you possess inside. All of us have the light of God in us, but what good is light if no one see it? Allow the light of God to shine through you, allow him to use you so you can be an inspiration to others. God has been trying to tell me this for sometime and sometimes difficult circumstances allows one to see more clearly. I can see now and hopefully others can see through my eyes. God is the only way.

Wade D. Buckley, Jr.

You gave no one a last farewell, nor ever said good-bye. You were gone before we knew it, and only God knows why. A million times we will miss you, a million times we will cry If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life we love you dearly, in death we loved you still, in our hearts you hold a place no one else can fill. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you the day God called you home. We will meet again someday I know in a better place. To Our Beloved Mother- Marion Mason

Mum’s life was anchored in the love and faith of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ right to the day she took her last breath, and we thank God for the life she lived while she was here with us. Anyone who knew her knows, she always took the opportunity to share her faith with them. Mum’s was a joyful person, always greeting others with a smile and hug-which endeared her to all. As we all do in life, she faced many challenges… in particular her health, but she did not allow that to negatively affect her radiant spirit. She remained joyful which drew many to her. Her grandchildren thought she was interesting and loved playing games with her. We thank God for equipping her with the power of love which was the reason she was able to share and give comfort and guidance freely to anyone with whom she came in contact. While I know Mum’s loved us all, I felt an extra affection as her only boy child. I still recall the days when you would stand at the gate to watch as I walked to school, the talks we had when I would stand behind your bed and act as if I were a preacher. Most importantly I am still thankful for all the prayers you sent up on my behalf. When you passed, it was hard for us to say goodbye… but know you will always remain in our hearts. Mum, you have earned your reward in Heaven, and the crown promised those who remained faithful to the end. “Time is too slow for those who wait, Too swift for those who fear Too long for those who grieve Too short for those who rejoice But for those who rejoice in the Lord, time is an eternity.” Alternatively, the original quote from Herny Van Dyke: Time is too slow for those who wait, too swift for those who fear, too long for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice, but for those who love, time is eternity. We miss you so much but hope to meet you in the sweet bye and bye. From your children, G, Noreen, and Fitzroy, Grandchildren, Great Grand, and Great Great Grands.

In Loving Memory of

Joicelyn Icilda Thomas Our dear departed mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Who went home to Glory on October 29, 2001

We little knew that morning that God was going to call your name. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. It broke our hearts to lose you, you did not go alone; for part of us went with you, the day God called you home. You left us peaceful memories, your love is still our guide, And though we cannot see you, you are always by our side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same, But as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.

Acts 2:4247 KJV 42

And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of

bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided[c] them among all, as anyone had need. 46

So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house,

they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
