Brian Keith Coleman was born on March 16, 1971 at Margaret Hague Hospital in Jersey City, NJ. He departed this earth peacefully surrounded by his family on April 29, 2024 at Morristown Medical Center. “BK”, as he was known, graduated from St. Mary High School in Jersey City and very early recognized the importance of technology by selecting the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to attend college.
Brian loved his music. From his early days of creating his own music studio in his bedroom; to creating the hip-hop classic, Not Gonna Be Able To Do It , music has always been an important part of his life. BK co-founded the legendary Jersey City group, Double X Posse, who went on to produce multiple albums. A music producer at heart, he produced several hit records for popular music artists like Naughty by Nature, Keisha Cole, Jaheim and others. He was still working on new music right up until his final days.
Sports was Brian’s way of learning and teaching life lessons. He was a two-sport star athlete in high school playing both basketball and baseball and furthered his basketball playing career at NJIT. To give back to the youth, he began coaching youth basketball at St. Patricks School in Jersey City and later was an assistant coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City. Following that, Brian became an assistant coach at Roselle Catholic High School. He later cofounded the national AAU basketball program Sports University / Team Izod. Brian helped more than 100 kids achieve their dream of college through basketball and coached 13 future NBA players.
Brian loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Earl and Mary Coleman. Brian is survived by his daughter Jazzmiah Watkins of Hillside, NJ; his fiancé, Keresa and their children Atahya, Maleek, Mia, Monet and Maurice McKnight all of Jersey City; his sister, Beverly Rogers (Willie) of Durham, NC; his brother, Kenny Coleman (Prentiss) of Atlanta, GA; his nieces Charmelita Royster of Durham NC, Melody Edwards of St. Mary’s, GA and Safiya Parker of Mitchellville, MD; his nephews Landis Strickland of Durham, NC, Jonathan Edwards of St. Mary’s, GA, Kamden Coleman of Atlanta, GA and Kyle Coleman of Atlanta, GA; One special grandbaby, Aniyah Fluellen and a host of special family and friends.
