OBITUARY
Joseph Monty Lipscomb September 18, 1961-March 18, 2022
Our beloved Joseph Monty Lipscomb, likened to a sunflower-- distinguished, vibrant and funny, entered this world and the hearts of his loving parents, Mahalia and the late Joseph William Lipscomb and his big sister, Deborah, on September 18, 1961. Monty was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, weighing just four pounds and entered into eternity on Friday, March 18, 2022, as the result of a sudden injury. Monty attended schools within the Newark Public School System including Maple Avenue School. He also attended Trinity Temple Seventh Day Adventist Academy and graduated from Weequahic High School in 1979. He excelled in student government and track and field. After graduating high school, Monty attended Essex County College and proceeded to start his career in the cable industry in Newark, New Jersey. Over time, he honed his supervisory and leadership skills, which led him to starting his own cable business. Monty was an entrepreneur at heart and grew his cable business to provide services in the New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania areas, which led to a thirtyfive year supervision and management career in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He furthered his career as a professional driver enjoying the flexibility it provided as it pertained to spending time with Sherry. Monty’s spiritual journey began early in life as he was baptized into the Baptist faith at the age of fourteen. Monty met the love of his life, Sherry DeVaughn Murphy, at a young age. Sherry grew up only a block away from Monty’s childhood home. Monty and Sherry loved each other unconditionally and shared a remarkable love story filled with many beautiful memories that spanned forty-two years. Monty and Sherry were inseparable. Sherry affectionately referred to Monty as Precious Monty, Beautiful Monty, and Jo-sey. Their love was so special that their two families became intertwined into one, and Sherry’s parents, the late Anna and James Murphy, deeply respected and loved Monty. Sherry and Monty reared a beautiful daughter, Daeja. Monty was such a proud father who combed hair and twisted ponytails. He loved supporting Daeja in basketball, karate, and throughout college. Daeja completed her first college degree in January 2022, and is presently continuing her education just as her Dad envisioned. Monty enjoyed life and created countless memories. Throughout his youth, Monty enjoyed spending time with family, especially his cousins in Brooklyn, New York; Union, South Carolina; and Jacksonville, Florida. He especially enjoyed the “boys’ trips” with his father and cousins to Canada, and he enjoyed playing street football in the neighborhood with his friends. Monty demonstrated a profound love for his family, which of course was grounded in his love for his beautiful mother, Mahalia, with whom he shared a loving and special bond. Monty cared for his mother alongside his sister and wife, Deborah & Sherry. Monty’s favorite holiday was Thanksgiving simply because of the family gatherings, and he always enjoyed attending family cookouts. He loved sports, especially basketball and football, and in fact, everyone knew his favorite team was the New York Giants. Monty also loved the city of Philadelphia and often spoke about the culture of the city– the marbled statuesque presence, the rivers, and the parks. For those who knew him, Monty was an intellectual, reserved, and humble man who was content with his life’s perspective. Monty was very popular within his Philadelphia community. He was a serious, yet funny and witty family man who often recalled the sayings and sentiments of his ancestors. He would regularly quote family members as far back as his greatgrandfather, Joseph Robinson; grandmothers, Beulah Carter and Lillie Pearl Lipscomb as well as the quotes of his father Joseph Lipscomb; aunts Florence Louise Dawkins and Lewis Charles Milliner. Monty always demonstrated respect and compassion for the elderly and was always there to lend a helping hand. Most importantly, Monty recognized the blessings of the Lord and professed his love for Christ. One of his well-known sayings was, “Did the Lord wake you up this morning? Well then, you ought to be grateful!” During the past four months, Monty was a blessing to his team of earthy angels: his loving wife Sherry, daughter Daeja, mother Mahalia, sister Deborah, sister-in-law LoRay, best friends Guy and Debbie Mann, and nieces Kheri & Kimani. Monty was predeceased by his father, Joseph William Lipscomb, in April 2020, and his precious memory will always be cherished by his loving wife, Sherry DeVaughn Murphy Lipscomb; his mother, Mahalia Lipscomb; his daughter, Daeja Cromartie; and his sisters Deborah Lipscomb and Jean Saunders; sisters-in-law, LoRay DeVaughn-Smith and Dianna Jett; aunts, Tommie Lipscomb Johnson and JoAnne Carter; uncles, James A. Lipscomb, Clarence Lipscomb and Earl Dawkins; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
I’ve Learned

I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.” I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw something back. I’ve learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I usually make the right decision. I’ve learned that even when I have pains, I don’t have to be one. I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back. I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn. I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Life Is But A Stopping Place,
A pause in what’s to be, a resting place along the road, to sweet eternity. We all have different journeys, different paths along the way, We all were meant to learn some things, but never meant to stay… Our destination is a place, far greater than we know. For some the journey’s quicker, for some the journey’s slow. And when the journey finally ends, we’ll claim a great reward, And find an everlasting peace, together with the Lord.
