INTERNMENT
Louise Wigfall was born on September 26, 1942, to the late Freddie and Tenear Lee Brown in Cross, South Carolina. She departed this life on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. She was the thirteenth child out of her siblings.
Louise grew up in Cross, SC, and attended the public schools there. She decided to leave and move to Philadelphia with her sister “Minnie.” After she worked and was able to save up some money, she moved to New York City.
On March 13, 1963, she married the late James Wigfall; they were married for 38 years before his passing. They had four children John, Floyd, Kevin, and Janell. Mama raised her children to know the Lord. Louise had a passion for serving God. As a child, she attended the Zion United Methodist Church. When she moved to New York City, she joined the Second Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Fortune Haskell. In the early seventies she worked in the garment industry through the late eighties until she retired. This influenced her love for fashion.
Sis. Wigfall was a faithful member who loved to dress up for church and wear her big hats. She loved to sing God songs of praise. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 100:1-5. Sis. Wigfall didn’t mind working in the church. When it was a program or the choir’s anniversary, she would be so excited to invite her family and friends to attend. So many people were introduced to the Lord and saved through an invitation to church by Sis. Wigfall. Some of her favorite songs to sing were: l’M NOT GOING TO LET MY RELIGION DOWN, SEARCH ME JESUS, I FOUND THE LORD ONE DAY and LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME JESUS to name a few
Sis. Wigfall served as the song leader and president of the STBC Gospel Chorus for more than 30 years. She also served as one of the leaders in the Jehovah Gospel Singers Group, along with the late Rev. Marvin Cheese. She loved to sing and didn’t mind singing. People often ask her to sing at funerals, programs, and choir anniversaries. Louise would go if she had to go all by herself.
Mama loved to cook; she would feed anybody who had an appetite. If you came to Mama’s house, you would only leave once she o ered you something to eat. If Mama still needed to get a cooked pot on the stove, somebody was sent to the store not once, not twice, but maybe three times until she had everything she needed to complete her meal. On Sunday’s some of her church family would follow her home to eat Sunday dinner. On Friday night her family would get together at her house to eat and have a good time. She made many
special dishes. People would still often ask, “when are you going to cook more pig feet? Wease, as some knew, was not only a singer or a cook but would make you laugh until you cried. If she cut her eye at you, you knew she was thinking of something funny to say. She loved making people laugh; the more you laugh, the more she told her funny stories.
She also chartered many bus trips to bring people together and have a good time. The bus ride would be filled with good music, food, and fun! However, her most memorable trip was going home during the Christmas holiday to visit family.
She was MAMA to so many children and everyone had the utmost respect for her. Mama loved her family and was very supportive. In 2017 when she became ill, she went to live with her daughter in Newburgh, NY, until she departed this life.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: Four children John Wigfall, Floyd Wigfall, Kevin Wigfall of the Bronx, NY, and Janell Watson (Ted) Newburgh, NY. Eight grandchildren: Latricia Cabello, Janee’ Drayton, Fatima Wigfall, Tavon Johnson, Takia Watson, Jessica Wigfall, Tydell Watson (Ikema), and Collette Brown. Four great-grands: Derrick Bolden Jr., Josiah Anderson, Jahlan Wigfall, J’ream Wigfall. One brother: Moses Brown Sr., and Three sisters: Lavenia Ravnell, Dora Anderson, and Susan Scott (Ronald), all of Philadelphia, PA. It has been a blessing to have you with us for the last few years.
Through it all, you made sure to put a smile on our faces and to keep us laughing even when you weren’t feeling your best.
From the jokes, singing together, and watching our favorite show Family Feud, it was all worth it.
We are beyond grateful to have had you in this lifetime. Thank you for all the memories we’ve created.
You are forever in our hearts.
