The Association’s headquarters in Washington, DC, consists of clubs throughout the United States, Ghana, Nigeria, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. The NORTH JERSEY UNIT of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. was founded by Josephine Keene in 1940. Welcome to the North Jersey Unit, NANBPWC, Inc.’s 59th Founders Day Luncheon. It is my pleasure and privilege to welcome each one of you: our past and present distinguished and deserving honorees, family, friends and our B&P sisters. Your presence here today inspires and encourages us to continue our efforts to provide community service through our programs and to recognize those in the community who provide distinguished service and outstanding contributions to our community. We are aware that much is yet to be done, and that we cannot afford to remain inert. We realize that a progressive organization must look to the future, more than to the past but, lest we forget from time to time, it is also important that we review our achievements and the failures of the past. To my NJU sisters, a heartfelt thank you for your dedication, cooperation, commitment, and support to assist in helping to insure the success of our 59th Founders Day celebration. “Success is to measure not so much by the position that one has reached in the life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed." Dr. Iris Banister 16th Northeast District Governor

Sincere Greetings, Oprah Winfrey speaking of women pioneers said, “I have crossed over on the backs of Sojourner Truth and the many stalwart women of her kind. Because of them I can now live the dream. I am the seed of freedom. I intend to bear great fruit!” The National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. founded in 1935 by seven of those stalwart women described stand firm and secure in the tradition of Sojourner Truth who left the message to each of us women that we must keep on making things happen, “There is a great stir about….. So I'm for keeping the thing going while things are stirring; because if we wait till it is still, it will take a great while to get it going again.” Sojourner Truth, 1851 It is with extreme pride and honor that I salute the ladies of the North Jersey Unit Club on the occasion of your 59th Founders’ Day; you have indeed for fifty-nine years been consistently stirring things, you’ve not allowed things to be still, and you have been making great things happen in your geographic area of the “Mighty Northeast District. Your 2015 Founders’ Day theme, "Women and Youth on the Move: Breaking New Ground" is indicative of the unyielding determined strength that you have respected and honored the work of our fore-mothers and continue to build upon that work with your eyes keenly fastened on the future as you, hand in hand with our youth, press towards the great things to come. For over fifty-nine years you have been an asset to the New Jersey area; bringing much needed services and programs to residents, encouraged youth to claim their positive futures by working hard in the present that lays a firm foundation upon which to build, and each member of the North Jersey Unit Club, down through the years, has been a living example of the epitome of womanhood, giving back to the community, and doing it with your heads held high and refusing to be stumbled or stopped by the obstacles of life. Year after year the ladies of the North Jersey Unit Club represent our Founders and every member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. with distinction and the highest standards; you ladies continue to actualize the NED theme by being “Simply the B.E.S.T. (Bold, Empowered, Sisters Together)! I, your NED sisters, and your supportive guest here today celebrate you for remembering NANBPWC, Inc. Founders and embracing our youth on this, your historic 59th Founders’ Day. We recognize you as twenty first century leaders, bold, confident and fierce sisters, and women that have taken hold of your corner of the world in your dainty but mighty hands and are together turning this upside down world, as our icon Sojourner Truth declared it to be, and turning it right side up again!

Dr. Iris Banister 16th Northeast District Governor

Negro National Anthem

Lift Every Voice and sing till earth and heaven ring Ring with the harmonies of liberty Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies Let it resound loud as the rolling sea Sing a song, full of the faith that the dark past has taught us Sing a song, full of the hope that the present has brought us Facing the rising sum of our new day begun Let us march on till victory is won Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod felt in the days when hope unborn had died yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come, over a way that which tears has been watered We have come, treading out path through the blood of the slaughtered Out of the gloomy past, till now we stand at last, Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast GOD of our weary years, GOD of our silent tears Thou Who has brought us thus far on the way Thou Who hast by Thy might, led us into the light Keep us for-e-ver in the path we pray Lest our feet, stray from the places our GOD where me met thee Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world we forget Thee Shadowed beneath thy hand, may we forever stand
