Verna Lorine Marr Hali, affectionately called Vernz, or Aunty V, was born in the beautiful Island of Jamaica, on May 2, 1952 to parents Collin and Gurzel Marr. Verna was born in the district of Chambers Pen in the Parish of Hanover. Most of her youth was spent in Chambers Pen where she attended the Primary School. Verna was born and raised in the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was a Pathfinder, and also a Sabbath School teacher in the primary division. In her first union she gave birth to two beautiful children Marvyn and Werna Lewis. To make a better life for her and her family, Verna migrated to Canada in 1973 and was joined two years later by her family. They then migrated to the United States in 1978 where they permanently resided. Verna was employed at Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1978, and Pearson Education Publication from 1986 2006. While employed at Pearson, she also worked at Englewood Hospital & Medical Center now, Englewood Health, where she remained for the last 25 years. Verna was a hard worker, who ensured her family was always well taken care of. She met and married Henry Hali on Dec 15, 1985 and was later joined on September 15, 1994 by children: Tamba L. Hali, Saah Hali, Tamba B Hali, Kumba Hali and later by Fayah Hali in 2006. Verna loved and raised these children as her own. Verna was always immaculately dressed and trendy. She loved the African culture and enjoyed wearing African clothing. Whenever she stepped into a room, she was often complimented on her African attire. Verna was an incredible wife, an incredible mother to her children, an incredible grandmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend. To sum it up, she was just INCREDIBLE! She was full of life, feisty, and was downright fun. Verna was well known for her laughter, which could be heard from a mile. She was a very humorous, direct and outspoken person; there was never a dull moment in her presence. She enjoyed spending time with her family! In the family she was known and admired as a take charge person; a no-nonsense person. Verna enjoyed traveling and took frequent trips to Canada and Jamaica. Sports also peaked her interest; The Yankees was her favorite baseball team and the Kansas City Chiefs her # 1 football team. Verna was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. She quickly learned how to prepare numerous African dishes, which were always delicious. Her split peas soup, ginger beer, saltfish fritters, boiled corn, curry goat, curry chicken, fried fish, and oxtail was always in high demand. However, the Split Pea Soup, it was the talk of the town. In other words, “The Bomb. Oh, by the way, did I mention her Black Cake?
She was very kind and selfless; always giving. If Verna was complimented on a piece of clothing, or a dish prepared by her, she’d often go out of her way to purchase that item or prepare that particular dish for the person as a surprise, and no one else would know about it. As a member of the Community Seventh Day Adventist Church, she served as an Usher, and a member of the Hospitality Team. She sang alto on the church choir (Remnant Singers). Verna attended church regularly and always prayed for her children and family. Verna recently became ill and on Monday Dec 30, 2019 and fell asleep in death. She is now awaiting the call of the life giver. Verna leaves to mourn her loss: husband Henry Hali; children Marvyn, Werna, Big Tamba, Saah, Little Tamba, Kumba, Fayah; Grandchildren - Karissia, Demontre, Devon, Dominique, Mikahy, Maliya, Sia, Baby Tamba, Joseph, James, Ty, Joel, Rachel, Henry & Mimi; Sisters - Ena, Elreita, Daphne & Verlene; Brothers - Kirley & Hayton (Storin), Aunt Vandis, Brothers-In-Law, Sisters-In-Law, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Verna Will Always Be In Our Hearts. Gone But Never Forgotten!
