The brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is built on the principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift. Walter “Buzzy” Allen sought this fellowship and pledged on the line known as “The Mean Machine” (TMM) at Tau Zeta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. from October 31, 1974 until his initiation on May 13, 1975. There was but one line before “The Mean Machine”, the founding, Charter Line, “Kool & the Gang.” We want to be clear that they were first and should forever be revered as such. We came to be known as “The Mean Machine” because that was what you saw, a precise, disciplined, respected collection of hard-core brothers who captured the imagination of friends and foes alike. The Dean of Pledges for “The Mean Machine” was Donald B. Moye. Number 1, Allen Craig, “Little Caesar”; Number 2, GorDon Baker, “Space Ghost”; Number 3, Bruce Branch, “Jomo”; Number 4, Jeffrey Richardson, “Moon”; Number 5, Keith Ingram, “DaDa”; Number 6, Rick Anderson, “Slick”; Number 7, Charles Cooperwood* (was not initiated); Number 8, Claude A. Jones, “Little Bird”; and our tail Number 9, Walter “Buzzy” Allen, “32X”. If “Kool and the Gang” was the foundation Line, “The Mean Machine” is the cornerstone of Tau Zeta. Brother Walter Allen was a very active member throughout his undergraduate time at Tau Zeta. During his neophyte year, Buzzy was elected as Chapter Chaplain. He also was elected to chair the Tau Zeta Chapter Achievement week. Brother James Bracey started the “Jabir Sana” which means “Try Very Hard” in Swahili. This was a Tau Zeta bi-weekly campus newsletter that Brother Walter Allen served as the editor. Brother Allen also started the Tau Zeta Chapter Lecture series. Guest attended the lecture series from the NJ/NY metropolitan area. Buzzy also served in other positions in Tau Zeta. He served as the chapters’ undergraduate representative at the 2nd District Conference. However, the position he absolutely cherished the most was the Dean of Pledges for “The Hell's Twelve”. Brother Walter Allen was responsible for assuring that these young men who were seeking to become members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity kept their GPA up to standards, learned how to step, greet, perform community service and embody the principles of the fraternity. Tau Zeta initiated “The Hell's Twelve” into the Omega Ps Phi Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1977. Walter “Buzzy” Allen carried the fraternity principles into every facet of his life. He loved the brothers of Omega, his chapter brothers and his line brothers. He was always there for them. For this reason and many more, Walter “Buzzy” Allen will be missed by his Tau Zeta Brothers who loved him dearly.
A Time To Be Reborn Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of Walter Holloway Allen. The son of Susie Allen and the Late “Holloway” he made his transition to heaven at the age of 62, on August 6, 2017. God required a true and faithful servant; so, He gently whispered to the bravest and energetic Saint of God he could find, Walter H. Allen. A Time To Live On March 5, 1955, God spoke into existence a handsome baby boy, Walter H. Allen. Having the energy of a shooting star at an early age, he passionately pursued to be about serving and encouraging others, praying, and later he pursued to be about his Father's business. He was raised in East Orange, New Jersey and his roots never wandered from home soil, but rather dug deeply into it. A lifelong resident, Walter was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. He was educated in the East Orange public schools, and athletically inclined, played baseball as well as football. He went on to receive his degree from the New Brunswick Campus of Rutgers's University, and continued to proudly wear his school colors whenever the chance presented itself. Walt was justifiably proud of many of his accomplishments; achievements he made through his own perseverance, loyalty, scholarship, and with an uplifting heart regardless of adversity. It is then no wonder that Walter found his way to Omega Psi Phi, where his brothers dedicated themselves to these same principles that came so naturally to Walter, and adopted them as Cardinal Principles of manhood. Walter carried these principles forward into every facet of his personal and professional life. Walt's professional life was accomplished and varied, including positions with WBGO Radio, WCTC-Radio, Weitz & Luxenberg P.C., and Fox News Sirus Radio. However, Walter's occupations were not limited solely to employment. Walter was generous with his time to any who asked for it, and specifically volunteered with Unstoppable Girls, and made his voice heard in advocating for political fairness in his community. He showed a love for music embodied in his involvement with the NJ Philharmonic Glee Club, and was particularly and appropriately enamored with a piece called “It Is Well With My Soul”. Those of us blessed to know Walter, know that he was the quintessential family man, and that he would and did give the fullest measure** of devotion to his mother, his family, and his friends. Walter was known by a myriad of nick names, rightfully showing us the value he placed on personal, direct relationships. To his Omega brothers he was “Buzzy”, to family he was known as “Buzz”, and at work he was simply Walt. However you knew him, however you remembered him, you ‘did’ remember him, you always ‘will’ remember him, and you always had someone you could rely on. In the words of his Omega brothers, Brother Walter “Buzzy” Allen has transitioned into the Omega Chapter. Buzzy will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him WE have lost a dear friend and valued colleague. We all know how proud he was of his work with Unstoppable Girls, helping his fellow colleagues and how he supported his mother. He will always be remembered as a tremendous individual. We will all miss a great human being. A Time To Die Walter H. Allen was a beloved father of David Allen Dandridge, cherished son of Susie Allen, brothers Larry* & Rudy*, Jimmy, Scott, and Boyd and his wife Teresa, niece Leah and her husband Terrence, nephews Harlem, Xavier, and Phoenix, and his proud Omega brothers and host of friends. Let your heart not be troubled, Buzzy “Buzz” is at Peace and with the Lord. *Predeceased
