M | L INSIDER Introducing three more new artists to the M|L Gallery family

Dennis Sheehan

New Hampshire (born in Boston) Oil paintings

Dennis Sheehan’s work often is described as reminiscent of the great masters of the 19th Century French Barbizon school and the American Tonalists. Born in Boston in 1950, Sheehan has works in major public and private collections, including the White House. His work is featured in many publications including a cover feature in American Artist. Sunrise in Swamp, 24x36, Oil on Canvas Mr. Sheehan trained in the best traditions of the “Boston School” at Untitled, 21x32, Oil on Canvas Vesper George School of Art and Montserrat School of Visual Art. He also studied with two of R.H. Gammell’s former students, Robert Cormier and Richard Whitney. Like his great 19th century predecessor, George Inness, whose influence Sheehan acknowledges, he employs a similar, dark palette with thickly pigmented surfaces. Like Inness, Sheehan eschews picturesque scenery in the interest of evoking atmospherics, and his paintings are produced in the studio from his imagination. All references to history—and there are many ...

Salt Lake City, Utah Oil paintings

The following are excerpts from ParkRecord.com

... “Then I discovered Spanish painters like Juan Sanchez Cotan and Zurbaran, and their minimalist aesthetic inspired me to find a way to create paintings that were spacious and minimalistic, and, yet, utilized the training that I had received ...” “In this series of paintings, which is all focused on cardboard boxes, the light on the form is emphasized and comes first,” Overton said. “I finally feel like I’ve painted a series that is all about the connection of the spiritual and the artistic ...” “I did one cardboard box and it had beautiful calligraphy on it,” he said. “I painted it on its own and it was the most peaceful and powerful painting that I have done ...” “I feel that these vessels are somehow related to what we are and I wanted to get down the boxes’ essential form and light,. It’s that ordinary aspect that really allows space for humility and love and all the good things we aspire to,” Overton said ... M | L INSIDER Ray Donley Austin,Texas Oil paintings

Donley’s style – figurative, dramatic, full of high-contrast lighting – quite diliberately evokes the Old Masters, particularly the Dutch and Spanish portraitists of the 17th century. That was the work that interested him as a young man – painters of the 14th and 15th centuries were, he says, “too Apollonian to me, too statuelike. By the 17th century, the painters looked like they were having fun. They were slapping the paint around.” That’s what Mr. Donley sought to emulate when he became a studio art major at the University of Texas, but he couldn’t find an instructor willing to help him develop that style. Thus, he switched to art history and began to school himself. Donley calls himself “something of an autodidact,” learning how to paint like an old master by immersing himself in the work of Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Velázquez, and Frans Hals absorbing everything he could about their artistry. “My change to art history opened up so many doors aesthetically ... June 2013 Is a physician who plays an instrument or sings a doctor or a musician first?

In the case of many physicians and medical students who performed in our gallery Friday, May 3, they very well could be either. The Marshall | LeKAE Gallery of Fine Art was pleased to host Physicians for the Phoenix Symphony and cosponsor a “Doctors in Recital” concert. This fine organization, comprised of doctors and medical students, raises funds to support The Phoenix Symphony and its education programs. Some of the best names in Phoenix medicine were in attendance. There were eight performances by more than a dozen medical professionals and students. Their music ranged from powerful arias to popular guitar ballads and intense piano pieces by Liszt. With more than one hundred people in attendance, the gallery was full of art lovers of all kinds who enjoyed music, great food from Malee’s Thai Bistro, a silent auction, and our fantastic collection of art. Be a part of similar events and happenings at the gallery by keeping in touch with our newsletter, Facebook page, and events listing on our website.

M | L INSIDER Thanks for Another Great Season of Fine Art in Scottsdale! As Arizona temperatures rise, snow birds retrace their migratory routes and things slow down a little on Main Street. Our season began in October with the 38th Anniversary ArtWalk featuring local artist James Randle, who joined us for a painting demonstration. We brought James back along with local sculptor Jordan Abernethy for the first “Scottsdale Fall for the Arts” in November. Both artists participated in the “Quick Draw” on Main Street and their pieces sold at auction. In December “The Craft of Copper” opened during Holiday ArtWalk with new works by master metalsmith Thomas Markusen gracing the walls of the gallery. We welcomed new sculptures from phenomenal Zimbabwean stone sculptor Gedion Nyanhongo in January. He chiseled away during the opening of “Unleashing the Spirit of Stone” and gave a few visitors the chance to try their hand at his craft. Later in January, ever-popular artist Neil Myers joined us for “Saguaros of the Sonoran Desert;” he brought with The

him several new, beautiful fauvist-inspired paintings of the Arizona wilderness. Debra Corbett of Massachusetts sent several new paintings for “Abstract Expressions” in February. Her fabulous front-window exhibition attracted many new collectors. March saw even more fantastic Arizona landscapes with cubist-inspired works by David Jonason. Twenty pieces comprised “The Majesty of Arizona,” seven of which pre-sold, even before arriving at the gallery. “Neo-Luminism” our show season finale brought new works by acclaimed artist Steven DaLuz in April. Contemporary Forum from the Phoenix Art Museum joined us for a special opening night reception. His paintings radiated in our center room creating new fans of the artist’s self-described style. We thank you for our success this season! We couldn’t do it without our devoted collectors, talented artists and gallery groupies. Please join us to make our 15th Anniversary season, featuring many of our very talented and sought after artists, a success too.
