Looking forward to a relaxing festive season… and a resurgent New Year

“ A

s another year draws to a close many of us will be sharing a sense of relief that we can take an extended break and look forward to a fresh start in 2011.

Over the past few months it has sometimes seemed as though every time we open a newspaper, or switch on the TV or check the latest news online the c-word – and all its unfortunate repercussions – looms ominously before us. The crisis, both global and uniquely Spanish, has affected nearly all of us in some way this year, but this is a month for banishing the doom and gloom and indulging in some rousing festive cheer, goodwill and optimism. In our own case, the year has been quite a momentous one in many ways. Earlier in the year, after receiving encouraging feedback from readers and clients about the magazine’s re-branding in 2009, we decided to move to the next level and consolidate Mallorca Life & Style’s pre-eminence among the island’s English-speaking community by revamping the editorial content and giving it a more glamorous and vibrant image. In autumn, we launched a new magazine, Home Couture, an upmarket and authoritative guide to décor, design and property, and we have been heartened by the kind words and positive response. Now, in this final issue of 2010, it is time for a little fun, light relief and dreamy aspiration – even if we still have to keep one cautious eye on the family budget. In our expanded “In Vogue” section, we offer great gift ideas for “The 12 Days of Christmas”; while elsewhere our beauty and fashion experts reveal the secrets of how to step out in style for the office party or family gathering. We may prefer to put health and fitness issues on the backburner until January but there are still little ways we can look after ourselves through over-indulgent feasts and bottles of wine that seem to have a hole in the bottom – including following a colour code for health. For example: blue foods for antioxidants; orange and yellow to build up the immune system; and green for vitality. Of course, we don’t want all those pure thoughts to become too burdensome – at least for the next few weeks – so, for a local treat (and to save a few pennies), this month’s “Flavours of the Med” section shows how to cook some of Spain’s popular sweetmeats, cakes and biscuits in our own kitchen. For those who want to step out on the town, our “Island Bulletin” includes a comprehensive “What’s On” guide all the way through to 20 January and the Fiesta of San Sebastián in honour of Palma’s patron saint. Of course, if you can’t wait until then, Palma is a stunning picture of festive charm and beauty in December, and our special “City Insiders” feature this issue shows how you can enjoy it on a fascinating guided tour. However you spend your Christmas-New Year, from all of us at ML&S, and Home Couture, we hope you have a pleasant, serene and spiritually fulfilling festive season – and enjoy a positive start to the New Year. This is a bumper triple issue (December-February) so we look forward to joining you again in March.

From Caribbean pop princess to international R&B diva Music critics have struggled over the years to define Rihanna. On her debut, reviewers referred to her as a “bubblegum queen” and to her music as “teen pop”. One Canadian commentator, apparently taking full advantage of the press “hospitality” at an Ottawa concert, was rather more kind and effusive, describing her show as “a Disney-esque choreographed fantasy of non-stop hip-swivelling, sassy attitude and personal endearments and a string of funky, sugar-free hits”. Originally earmarked as a reggae singer when she started attracting international attention in 2005, her subsequent recordings have encompassed a cross-section of genres, from pop to dancehall, with an ample infusion of rhythm and blues and a touch or contemporary urban. She even collaborated with rapper Eminem on Love the Way You Lie, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 this autumn. Rihanna herself has variously cited her influences and idols as Mariah Carey, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce Knowles, Whitney Houston, Brandy and Gwen Stefani – as well as (oh dear) Celine Dion and (much more respectably) Bob Marley.

Rihanna 16

In whatever category she is placed, however, the bottom line is that her fusion of styles has gelled well and struck a massively popular chord among fans worldwide, no doubt helped by an often risqué image. Not to mention a little bit of bad girl chic: she has several tattoos ranging from a skull with a pink hair bow to an Arabic phrase meaning “Freedom in Christ”. Her 13th and most recent tattoo, on her chest, reads, “Never a failure, always a lesson”. It has been tattooed backwards because, we are told, she likes to read it in the mirror – it is her “motto in life for everything”.

• The following year, her second album, A Girl Like Me, rose even higher, to the top five, and included her first US number one hit single, SOS. • Rihanna’s third album, Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), peaked at number two and produced five top-10 hits. It was nominated for nine Grammy Awards, and won “best rap/sung collaboration” for Umbrella, with Jay-Z. • Her next album, Rated R (released in November 2009), went to number four and included the number one hit Rude Boy. • Now, just one year on, she has released her fifth studio album, Loud, with two number one US singles already: Only Girl (In the World) and What’s My Name. In all, she has sold a stratospheric 15 million singles and 45 million albums worldwide, and achieved more number one singles (nine) over the past five years than any other artist. THE BEGINNINGS… Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Saint Michael (Barbados) on 20 February 1988, her Afro-Guyanese mother was an accountant and her Barbadian father (of Irish descent) a warehouse supervisor. She was the oldest of three children – having two brothers. She began singing at an early age, but suffered a difficult childhood: her father was reportedly addicted to crack cocaine and her parents’ marriage broke up when she was 14. At 15 she formed a musical group with two high school classmates, and in 2004 she won the Miss Combermere beauty pageant.

But we digress… the aforementioned fusion of genres has resulted in some spectacular successes for someone still in the first flushes of their career:

In 2003, the group was introduced to record producer Evan Rogers, who was holidaying in Barbados and gave them an audition. He later said, “The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn’t exist.”

• Her debut studio album, Music of the Sun, in 2005 went into the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart, and featured the Billboard Hot 100 single Pon de Replay.

It has not been reported if their existential state improved after that meeting, but it was Rihanna and her mum who then shuttled back and forth to Roger’s

celebrity Life & Livingprofile home in Connecticut before, shortly after turning 16, Rihanna moved in permanently with the producer and his wife. She juggled recording a four-song demo with going to school for a year, before the recording made its way to the Def Jam label and she was quickly signed by then president Jay-Z. Her first album, Music of the Sun, received mixed reviews, with it being variously described as “a glut of teen R&B chanteuses”,

“generic vocal hiccups and frills” and “chintzy production and maudlin arrangements”. It sold two million copies worldwide, however, so Rihanna was on the way – big-time. Her second album, A Girl Like Me, also generally failed to excite the critics, though it sold over one million copies. Perhaps with this in mind, she decided to change direction with the third, Good Girl Gone Bad, explaining, “I want to keep people dancing but still be soul-

ful at the same time... You feel different every album, and (at) this stage I feel like I want to do a lot of up tempo (songs).” This time the album received positive reviews and her fourth, Rated R, was even more critically acclaimed, with Rolling Stone noting, “Rihanna has transformed her sound and made one of the best pop records of the year.” That same year she suffered a highly publicised and ugly break-up with boyfriend Chris Brown. In February, as they were heading to the Grammy Awards, where she was scheduled to perform, they were involved in an altercation, Brown was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats, Rihanna was later seen with visible injuries in a photograph leaked from Los Angeles police (prompting a campaign to protect the privacy of victims of domestic violence), and Brown subsequently pleaded guilty to a felony assault. In exchange for his plea deal, the singer received five years probation and was ordered to stay 50 metres way from Rihanna – unless at public events (10 metres). Away from the stage, Rihanna has signed various endorsement deals with such brands as Secret Body Spray, Clinique’s Happy fragrance and Proctor Gamble’s female deodorant Secret, as well as Gucci’s Tattoo Heart Collection of special-edition handbags.

Her philanthropic activities include the Believe Foundation, created by her in 2006 to help terminally ill children (“When I was young and I would watch television and I would see all the children suffering, I always said: when I grow up, I want to help”), and tourist promotion for Barbados as honorary “ambassador for culture and youth”. Not that all efforts back home have been fully appreciated: she has attracted criticism for wearing “skimpy clothes” and not setting a good example. It clearly hurt, bringing back sad memories of being bullied at school. “Having lighter skin wasn’t a problem in my household, but it was when I went to school — which really confused me at first. The harassment continued to my very last day of elementary school.”

THE BIG PICTURE

NEW RELEASES, WHAT’S BEING FILMED AT THE MOMENT, WHAT’S IN PRE-PRODUCTION AND WHAT’S IN THE PIPELINE… MICKY REYNOLDS LOOKS AT WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF MOVIES

MOVIE OF THE MONTH

The King’s Speech (released 26 November, US; 22 December, Spain; 7 January, UK) With the awards season just around the corner this much talked about true-life historical drama may be thereabouts when the trophies are being handed out. There were early indications of this when the film took the prestigious People’s Choice Award at the 35th Annual Toronto International Film Festival in September. The only thorn in its side could be the “R” rating (under-17s require an accompanying parent or adult guardian) given by the Motion Picture Association of America for “some language” – this could play a significant role against it come the ceremonial season. After the death of his father, King George V of England (MICHAEL GAMBON), and the controversial abdication of his brother, Edward VIII (GUY PEARCE), in 1936, Bertie (COLIN FIRTH) ascended to the throne as George VI (father of the current Queen). His country was on the brink of war and desperately needed a leader, but one slight hitch – the new king has a nervous stammer. So his wife Elizabeth (HELENA BONHAM CARTER) hires an eccentric speech therapist Lionel Logue (GEOFFREY RUSH). Together they fight to overcome the problem via unorthodox therapy; but with the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (TIMOTHY SPALL), the king overcomes his condition to give a radio address that will inspire and unite his people through the hard times that are about to follow. COLIN FIRTH has been praised to the hilt in the States for his performance so don’t be surprised if, come the early hours on Monday 28 February, this man mounts the stage to collect one of those “golden babies”. (The 2011 Oscar nominations will be 20 announced on 25 January.)

biography. Disney bosses think it might not be in their interests to include the rock star’s character in the finished film.

TAKE ONE BRUCE WILLIS, who can be seen later this month on Spanish cinema screens in Red, has announced that he will make another two Die Hard movies but will then retire the white vest of his John McClane character – Die Hard 5 is currently in development. Good and bad news for James Bond fans… the good, 23 (working title) is back on, and the bad, it might not happen until 2014. The film’s makers, MGM, almost went bust but the lion is still roaring after they were saved by Spyglass Entertainment. Now MGM are no longer a distributor, just a working studio. DANIEL CRAIG is still involved despite other names being mentioned to fill the super spy role. JUDY DENCH will also be back as M.

JOHNNY DEPP, who has almost wrapped up on the above, has raised an eyebrow on one of the most talked about new projects around, Snow White and the Huntsman, which starts filming in January. Casting hasn’t been confirmed yet but he seems interested in the main male role while CHARLIZE THERON is up for the villain as she has a gap in her schedule because Mad Max: Fury Road recently got delayed until 2012. The plot – when the Huntsman learns that the evil stepmother Ravenna intends to kill Snow White, he becomes her mentor as they plan their escape from Ravenna’s clutches.

She has also boarded the Pirates of the Caribbean with a cameo at the start of the film which involves a chase sequence – described as a bit like Charlie Chaplin getting away from the Keystone Kops and involving Captain Jack, who escapes by a carriage belonging to a noblewoman (DENCH) whom he ravishes then robs. RICHARD GRIFFITHS (Uncle Vernon in the Harry Potter movies) has been recruited as King George II while KEITH RICHARDS, who has already finished shooting, may be dropped due to his stance on drugs in his recently released

THERON has also been linked with the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, playing a detective. All the main stars have re-signed, plus TOM HARDY, who will play the villainous Dr Hugo Strange, a psychologist brought in by the Gotham police to figure out who Batman is. Slightly unbalanced to begin with, he manages to work out Batman’s identity but keeps it to himself for nefarious purposes. The other villain is likely to be Catwoman but at the moment, despite rumours, The Riddler will not feature. Filming will start in April.

Having exited the X-Factor, one of the contestants was asked, “Will you continue singing?”, to which she replied, “Of course not” – pity they don’t all follow suit! Last year’s winner, JOE McELDERRY, says he never wants to see his CDs in service station bargain bins. One solution – don’t look in service station bargain bins then! Someone blogged this about that pathetic programme… “It’s about time Britain woke up; half the country is going nuts every Saturday and Sunday night over a handful of karaoke singers and those four stooges”. As the Aussie beer TV advert once said – personally, I don’t give a XXXX about that show!

BATTLE OF BANDS CANCELLED

EVA LONGORIA upset LADY GAGA at last month’s MTV EMAs in Madrid by coming on stage dressed as a leg of ham – apparently old Poker Face, who was not present, was not amused. Guitar legend SLASH, who handed out the Best Live Act award, angered organisers by wearing a T-shirt with the Coca-Cola logo and a four-lettered word that describes a female’s sexual organ sprayed over the top. And MILEY CYRUS dropped herself in it by getting snapped while participating in that ancient teenage ritual – drinking under age. The problem no longer exists when she’s in Europe as she turned 18 on 23 November but she still can’t drink in the States, where you have to be 21.

Last month we told you about what the media had dubbed the Battle of the Bands, with two monster names, JLS and TAKE THAT, releasing their new albums on the same day, Monday 22 November. It never developed as the latter’s recording label, Sony, decided to bring their album out one week earlier. It was a decision that worked in their favour as TT’s offering, Progress, achieved the biggest opening week sales of any album this century (and the best since OASIS with Be Here Now in 1997) after clocking up 520,000 sold copies. The Official Charts Company announced that TAKE THAT’s sixth studio album, and their first with the original line-up since 1995, had sold more albums than the rest of the week’s top-10 combined. Several labels have not announced their new releases as they are all sitting on the fence to see what everyone else will release, and January has always been a slow month for new releases, but here’s what has been announced so far… Tron Legacy (OST) by DAFT PUNK; Someone Wake Me Up by JOE McELDERRY; Some Kind of Nothingness by MANIC STREET PREACHERS; and Better Than Today by KYLIE MINOGUE (all released on 6 December). Michael by MICHAEL JACKSON; Live On Air by BON JOVI; and Love Letter by R. KELLY (13 December). The World Is Yours by MOTORHEAD; Valhalla Dancehall by BRITISH SEA POWER; and Ritual by WHITE LIES (17 January). Doo Wops & Hooligans by BRUNO MARS; and 21 by ADELE (24 January).

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Life & Living Last year a Facebook campaign stopped the show’s winner from getting the prestigious UK Christmas number one spot by putting RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE with Killing In The Name Of on top. This year a similar “crusade” hopes to launch THE TRASHMEN’s 1963 classic Surfin Bird to number one. The song has gained popularity via the BBC cult cartoon series Family Guy and over 400,000 have registered (including yours truly) on the network site. NB: if you are interested, the official Facebook page asks fans not to buy Surfin Bird before 12 December if you do want to make it number one over the Christmas period.

Some people, eh... James Blunt wants an invite to the royal wedding – he’s offering to sing You’re Beautiful. Why not go the whole hog and get CHESNEY HAWKES there as well to sing The One and Only!

According to GRANT NICHOLLS, the new LIAM GALLAGHER band BEADY EYE sound good. The FEEDER lead singer popped in to check out the ex-OASIS man laying down tracks as the two bands have been recording at the same studio (the boys from KASABIAN agree). The first single, Bring The Light (it sounds very PAUL WELLER plus a piano – to these ears), is available as a free download and an album is due in the spring. LIAM has added his vocal support against the possible closure of the legend that is the 100 Club in London, which has been giving bands breaks since 1942 – other names who have spoken out about this possible travesty include MICK JAGGER, PAUL WELLER, CARL BARAT and MICK JONES. A benefit gig is taking place on 1 December with ROLLING STONES guitarist RONNIE WOOD and the man he replaced in the band, MICK TAYLOR, plus New Blues guitar pioneer STEPHEN DALE PETIT. But only one musician has actually put his hand in his pocket – his anonymous £100,000 donation will hopefully help rescue the venue that has launched so many. The media found out who it was – so step forward FRANK BLACK of THE PIXIES. As for the rest… apparently it’s all talk – and no chequebook! KANYE WEST recently did a “ROLF HARRIS” on a flight to New York, taking over the stewardess’ mike and rapping lines to the passengers from Gold Digger and Good Life. Part of it has found its way on to YouTube.

Former NIRVANA bassist KRIST NOVOSELIC is teaming up with his old band mate DAVE GROHL for a track on the new FOO FIGHTERS album, which is said to be their “heaviest” yet. It will be the first time the two have recorded together since the demise of that legendary band in 1993. Also on board is BUTCH VIG, who produced NIRVANA’s breakthrough album Nevermind in 1991. After he has finished twiddling the knobs on that project BUTCH is getting back with SHIRLEY MANSON and the rest of GARBAGE to record a new album. It will be their first studio album since Bleed Like Me was released in 2005. DANIEL LLOYD DAVEY, who is better known as DANI FILTH, lead singer of goth rockers CRADLE OF FILTH, has been given a title by the Suffolk County Council and will now be addressed as LORD FILTH – and he is going to make the most of it. He said, “I’m looking into what my title allows, whether that’s driving a flock of sheep through the town centre on a bank holiday or the keys to every inn and wine cellar in the county. I’ve also been looking into a nice new country pile; the parties will be immense, the kind Lord Byron would throw if he had access to some SLAYER albums. I’m fully expecting it to help get me a better table when I eat out too, especially in the US. Ultimately this is a great opportunity to mess with people’s perceptions.” What will the House of Lords make of him? The

band released their new album, Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa, last month. While on holiday in Barbados AMY WINO befriended a monkey and decided she wanted to take it back home with her. Can you imagine her taking it in her local back in Camden – then again, she’s always monkeying around when she’s in there. AXL ROSE says GUNS N’ ROSES are going to make a new album. Last time it took him 13 years to produce the end product – how long are we gonna have to wait for this one! So what’s happening with GIRLS ALOUD then? One day NADINE COYLE is welcome – the next day she isn’t. Her debut solo album, Insatiable, which was released through Tesco’s, only reached number 47 in the UK album charts and moved just 5,000 copies on release including one bought by band mate KIMBERLEY WALSH – well you know what that superstore’s TV ad slogan says: “Every little helps”.

Reading Room This month we offer some of the top reads of 2010 ideal for Christmas gifts or holiday reading. THE MAN WHO DISAPPEARED By Clare Morrall

What would you do if, out of the blue, your reliable husband disappeared? Then you were told he had been involved in money-laundering. Surely the man you know intimately couldn’t be a criminal... could he? When Felix Kendall vanishes, his wife Kate is left in turmoil. As she and their children adjust to a hand-to-mouth existence, she looks back on her marriage and Felix’s orphaned upbringing in search of clues, confronting the possibility that she has badly misread him. And, as Kate gradually discovers strengths she never knew she had, many miles away Felix is coming to terms with just what he has done and lost. This compelling story of deception and self-deception, compromise and second chances questions how far we can know even those closest to us as it probes beneath society’s veneer: in times of adversity, friends fall away and the most unexpected people step forward. With her characteristic wry wit, Clare Morrall delivers.

THE HELP

By Kathryn Stockett

In Jackson, Mississippi, there are lines that are not crossed. Black maids raise the white children, but no one trusts them not to steal the silver. Aibileen is a black maid, raising her 17th white child, but with a bitter heart after the death of her son. Minny is the sassiest woman in Mississippi; she can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t keep her lip buttoned. And Skeeter is a white woman with a degree but no ring on her finger. Home from college, Skeeter discovers her beloved maid Constantine has disappeared without a trace. And, as different as they may be, these three women will come together for a clandestine project that will put all of them at risk. But The Help is not just about race: it’s about how women, whether mothers or daughters, the help or the boss, relate to each other. It’s about the dramas of domestic life: pride, competition on the cooking and home front, complex emotions about the raising of young children, and that horrible feeling that those who look after your children may understand them, deal with them and love them even better than you.

STONE’S FALL

By Iain Pears

A historical crime story of an intelligent order, with a wide, timespanning canvas that moves from Edwardian London to Paris and Venice. In his most dazzling and brilliant novel since An Instance of the Fingerpost, Iain Pears tells the story of John Stone, financier and armaments manufacturer, a man so wealthy that in the years before World War I he was able to manipulate markets, industries and, indeed, whole countries and continents. A panoramic novel with a riveting mystery at its heart, Stone’s Fall is a quest to discover how and why John Stone dies, falling out of a window at his London home. Chronologically, it goes backwards – London in 1909, then Paris in 1890, and finally Venice in 1867 – and Stone’s character and motivation deepen as the book progresses. In the first part he is almost an abstraction, existing only in the memory of those who knew him; in the second he is a character, but only a secondary one; in the third he is the narrator of the story. A quest, then, but also a love story and a murder mystery, set against the backdrop of the evolution of high-stakes international finance, Europe’s first great age of espionage and the start of the 20th century’s arms race. Like Fingerpost, Stone’s Fall is an intricate and richly satisfying puzzle, completely engaging on many levels, and a triumphant return for one of the world’s great storytellers.

THE LEGACY

By Katherine Webb

The Legacy is a sweeping, multi-generational drama, moving from turn-of-the-century Oklahoma to present-day Wiltshire, and exploring the lives of two very different women from one remarkable family. In the bitter winter of 2009, following the death of their grandmother, Erica Calcott and her sister Beth return to Storton Manor, a grand and imposing Wiltshire house where they spent their summer holidays as children. When Erica begins to sort through her grand-

mother’s belongings, she is flooded with memories of her childhood – and of her cousin, Henry, whose disappearance from the manor tore the family apart. Erica sets out to discover what happened to Henry – so that the past can be laid to rest, and her sister Beth might finally find some peace. Gradually, as Erica begins to sift through remnants of the past, a secret family history emerges; one that stretches all the way back to turn-of-thecentury Oklahoma, to a beautiful society heiress and a haunting, savage land. As past and present converge, Erica and Beth must come to terms with two terrible truths.

THE BED I MADE

By Lucie Whitehouse

Fleeing London for the wintry Isle of Wight, she is determined to ignore the flood of calls and emails from an increasingly insistent Richard. But what began as a nuisance becomes an ever more threatening game of cat and mouse.

JESS CONRAD

The eternal teenager ONE OF THE GREAT SURVIVORS IN THE UK ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY OVER THE PAST HALF CENTURY, JESS CONRAD BECAME A SIXTIES ICON AND TEEN IDOL WHEN HE WON THE THEN EQUIVALENT OF TV’S THE X-FACTOR (WHAM!) AND RELEASED A SERIES OF POP HITS… HE WENT ON TO BECOME AN ACTOR, MUSICAL STAR, CABARET ARTIST AND HIGH-PROFILE FUND-RAISER FOR CHARITIES – AS WELL AS AN ASSIDUOUS VISITOR TO MALLORCA ish films made during the fifties after meeting an extra who told him, “You just need a few outfits.”

We catch Jess Conrad during a rare free moment after rehearsals for his latest pantomime appearance. “Before I was always the archetypal Prince Charming,” he recalls, “but lately I’ve been playing villains – Abanaza in Aladdin, Captain Hook, and the Baron in Cinderella. I play it as a playboy, and the reason he has two ugly sisters is because he slept around. There is also a suggestion he may have been a minstrel.”

“My father was a mason, so he had a dinner jacket. I was a bit of a spiv, a wide boy.” He was an extra on Reach for the Sky starring Kenneth Moore and became a young repertory actor with the Charles Danville Company. He also worked as assistant stage manager for Laurence Olivier. “The first time I met him he was wearing a threadbare dressing gown, with make-up strains all over it. I went home and said, ‘Mum, I want a dressing gown.’ She replied, ‘Cor blimey, these showbiz people!’

Recently returned to the UK after holidaying on Mallorca, Conrad is back doing what he loves – working. A self-confessed work-alcoholic, he is now in his seventies but continues to work nearly every week. He makes cameo appearances on TV, performs cabaret shows around the UK, is in demand as an afterdinner speaker, remains a popular performer in the West End, organises celebrity involvement in various events and continues to act in films. In fact, just out on DVD is the British film Telstar, in which he plays 1960s pop music guru and agent Larry Parnes. In a “surreal” twist, Jess Conrad himself is played in the film by Eastenders actor Nigel Hanson. “It must be a rare instance of someone immortalised on film, played by someone else, who actually meets that real person in the film.” Born Gerald James, Jess Conrad is one of the most versatile artistes of his generation, but he never forgets his Cockney background in post-war Brixton and his mother’s advice, “Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves.” As a young man in the fifties, he would often sit in the stalls of the London Palladium

It cost two shillings and sixpence, I put makeup on it, and ever since I have always worn a dressing gown like a backstage costume. It’s become my comfort blanket.”

watching such Top of the Bill acts as Danny Kaye, Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford. He started his own showbiz career studying acting at an East London drama school and paying his way by working on his father’s flower stall in Marble Arch. He became close to the family that owned Bertorelli’s restaurant, and years later performed at their restaurant of the same name on Mallorca. He obtained his Film Artistes Association union card and became a member of the now-defunct Central Casting. “So I do have a system; I’m not phased by acting.” He became a “bit part player” in various Brit-

Conrad played seasons in Barnsley and Derby before being discovered by TV producer Daphne Shadwell, who saw him appearing in an advertisement for the Daily Sketch newspaper.
She put him forward for the part of Barney Day in the TV play Rock A- Bye Barney (which he secured), and he was seen by TV and stage producer Jack Good who, believing he “looked like a pop star”, put him on TV in the original Oh Boy! show. Backed by a Decca recording contract, he made it onto England’s pop charts with such hits as Cherry Pie, Mystery Girl, This Pullover and Pretty Jenny; and in 1961 was voted England’s “most popular male singer” in the NME annual poll. Around this time he was sharing a flat in Chelsea with Terrance Stamp and Michael Caine

THE MAN BEHIND THE ETERNAL TEENAGER this to my mum once and she said, “Don’t worry, you’re the best looking lad at school.” I was popular with the girls, a good fighter, and I would sort out the bullies. I was wellbuilt and boxed at a south London club. I went through life not really intelligent, but relying on looks. I was self-educated. If you could arrange a dinner party with any four people of your choice (alive or passed away), who would they be? Diana Dors, Bobby Moore, Anthony Newley and Dave Dee. What word or phrase do you think your family and friends would use to define you? Beatles couldn’t be married. Your career would be instantly over – the same if they found out you were gay. It was a different time then.”

He first visited Mallorca in the 1970s, and returns regularly when time allows it. Like Robert Winsor, he is an honorary member of Santa Ponça golf club.

His future wife Renee was a debutante and the daughter of the head of a Dutch shipping line. “No one knew we were married. It’s incredible how times have changed.”

Above all else, however, he is a performer. “Everyone has a place in life and mine is centre-stage.” The word “retirement” is not in his vocabulary, though – having said a final goodbye to such close friends as Dave Dee in recent years – he is conscious of his own mortality. “If life’s a day it’s tea-time for me, but I do have early tea.”

The following decade Jess made the transition from pop singer to musical star, playing Jesus in Godspell and Joseph in Joseph & His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, performing the latter twice at London’s West End and breaking box office records during the 1982 summer season in Blackpool.

Not that it was all that simple back in the sixties. “As a pop star at the time, we weren’t allowed to marry. A lot of people before The

Over the years he has done 12 royal command performances, as well as numerous other top concerts. At the Theatre Royal Windsor, he was claimed to the Queen’s favourite singer. “They say she can look into my dressing room from her window.” His work for charities dates back 50 years, as player then more recently manager of the Showbiz Football Team, and playing golf with the Variety Club of Great Britain. He played at Wembley 10 times, in warm-ups before big matches, in goal behind such luminaries as Sean Connery and Rod Stewart. “I think I was a goalie because I got to wear a different coloured costume.” He even took the team to Mallorca twice, and would welcome the opportunity to do it again, perhaps supporting the Robert Winsor charity golf event and gala dinner (see feature last issue). He has, in fact, been a regular performer at Winsor’s annual events, and is a long-time friend of the celebrated philanthropist.

Hard-working and fun to be with. What word or phrase would you use to describe yourself? Hard-working and fun to be with! What is it you like most about living in Mallorca? One of the endearing things is the menu del día. I like the pace; I can really relax. I have wonderful friends, and I love long lunches. Your favourite place in Mallorca? I like going to the Saturday market in Sóller; I would like to explore Mallorca more. What is your favourite Spanish dish? As a Cockney boy I like most things, but my favourite is probably shoulder of lamb. I like to eat at Mood, and the famous Wellie’s burger. And wine? Rioja How much time are you connected to the internet each day? Technology is really passing me by, which is a shame.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness? Seeing my name up in lights. What is your worst fear? Agents stopping phoning. Any special goal in life you have not fulfilled yet? I was perfect for James Bond. I did an audition but George Lazenby got the part. I played Jesus and he was more important than Bond! Now I suppose my goal would be a long-playing character in a soap. What is the best thing about being a man? The camaraderie of other men – and you can flirt with woman!

And the last thing when you go to sleep at night? What I have achieved that day. Did I do enough work on the body, did a job arrive, and can I do better tomorrow. What’s one thing you don’t leave home without? A comb. If you could travel in time, what era would you choose? My good friend Alan Hudson (the former Chelsea and Stoke footballer) was once asked what age he would like to be and he said 12, and I agree. It was during the postwar, but a great age. Favourite… Number? 8 Colour? turquoise Flower? red rose, the flower of love Sport? heavyweight boxing, football Meal? Cantonese Hobby/pastime? golf (previously, the gym), charity balls, socialising, dining Luxury? Because of my busy social schedule and work commitments, an evening at home with my wife.

And the worst? Shaving. If you were banished to a desert island, what book would you take with you? My autobiography – and a mirror.

What special memories do you have from your childhood? The 1950s in the Astoria cinema, the biggest in London; they had a fish pond in the foyer – so exotic – and angels. I went there to escape reality. Coming out it would be foggy and cold in Brixton market and there was that wonderful feeling of going home to a nice bowl of soup… wrapping up warm and going home to mum.

If you were asked to identify yourself with an animal, which would it be?

What were your favourite subjects at school? I was a complete dunce, sometimes in the corner for an hour, sometimes after being caned. I couldn’t read or write. I mentioned

If I have to learn a script I’m straight onto that. Every day I do something for the body and the brain: gym, golf, walking, running. If I’m working I ring my agent, and do some networking.

A deer… I very impressed with the film Bambi. All my dogs have been named Bambi and I live at Bambi Lodge. What car do you currently own? A Mercedes sport. What’s the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?

City Insiders

A pictorial tour of Palma with Oliver Neilson Think you know Palma? Me too. You’d be a fool not to know the cathedral, naturally; you know where the shops are, perhaps your favourite café or lunchtime spot; and of course the knobbly old olive tree in Plaça Cort.

I thought the city couldn’t have hidden too many secrets from me but it was with an open mind that I made my way to that famous old tree to meet up with the guys behind Mallorca Hiking for a taster of their guided city walk around the region’s capital. A small group had already gathered, a mixture of holiday-makers and locals, and our host for the day, Peter, had already started imparting his encyclopaedic knowledge. Apparently the grand old tree has just recovered from a long illness, and despite the wrinkly appearance is good for years yet. We ambled at a comfortable pace in the direction of the La Seu cathedral, talking and making friends as we went, occasionally pausing for another nugget of interest or history and a few questions. A brief but detailed inspection of the exterior of the gothic monolith, and a trip around the interior including the marmite love it/hate it new chapel and window dedicated by the king a few years back. For the record I hated it, marginally warmed to it for a few minutes, then went right back to hating it again. Go and have a look and make up your own mind. Emerging back into the sunshine we were off again, diving into the maze of narrow streets in the old town behind the cathedral, an area that rarely fails to charm locals, expats and visitors alike, then on to a real gem. Now I do my best to absorb as much as I can of local culture, but I had never heard of prolific local 20th century artist Joaquim Torrents Llado, let alone the wonderful museum of his work, set inside his former house tucked away in the old town. It truly is a highlight of the city. As always Peter added to the experience with a good deal of background detail on the man and his works. Often information about the city’s attractions can be sparse, or at least sparse in English if you’re Spanish or Catalan is a little rusty. So a guide in your own language really does open your eyes more than you could manage on your own.

37

I’ll keep some surprises for you to discover, but safe to say the next few hours were filled ducking and diving through back streets to places that were new to most of us; sudden reappearances at familiar spots, or at least places that we thought we knew; and pauses for a spot of lunch or a coffee at perfect little hideaways that I hope I can unearth again. Then we reached our journey’s end at the Es Baluard gallery, an architecturally bold statement in modern concrete actually set inside the old walls that describe the western margin of the medieval city that houses the city’s primary modern art collection. Much the wiser, and with heads full of ideas and intentions to revisit some of the places we had seen, we parted as friends.

I don’t know about you, but as a resident I often find I know less about this island than the more curious tourist who might holiday briefly here. I have a good inkling about all the great things I must get around to seeing when I have a bit more time, but these good intentions have a tendency to get trumped by real life… besides, I’ll go next week, or next month, or failing that next year. After all it’s not like it’s going anywhere. Know the feeling? Then perhaps now is the time to rectify that. Give them a call or an email and tag along next time. You never know, you might just learn something.

Photos: Oliver Neilson

The weather could not dampen the festive spirit as Christmas celebrations kicked off in style at the King Richard III School Fayre. The kids especially just love the whole day.” Volunteers organised stalls, games and a barbecue, and singer Liam Live added to the atmosphere by providing entertainment which kept most of the crowd from leaving when the rain came down.

Bonfire night… up in flames!

Photos: Oliver Neilson

It was the biggest and best bonfire night to date! Almost 4,000 people packed into the Mallorca Cricket Club ground outside Magaluf for the largest gathering of expats this year. In 2009 the event was a total washout with strong winds and driving rain putting a damper on the party. This left the MCC in a financial mess as the club relies on this event as its major fundraiser of the year. On 5 November the elements were kinder and conditions were perfect for the two big bonfires, the fireworks display and the live outdoor entertainment. The comperes on stage for the evening, Laura Penn and Froggy Fred from English Radio, introduced the duo Wired (Nicky Stixx and Victor Prada), who got the celebrations underway. After the fireworks display another duo, the Ta Las (Arron Reece and Tony Paris), rocked the night away as people stayed to enjoy the barbecue, beer and, of course, Wendy Peter’s traditional toffee apples. The chairman of Mallorca Cricket Club, Frank Leavers, was more than pleased at how the event had gone. “It’s great for the club,” he said. “Now we can continue to bring touring sides here to this unique venue and keep on being a part of the local community”. The fun continued in the clubhouse till late with many a Lamumba going south before the proceedings finally came to an end… until next year!

Senior partner Peter Worthington described the day as a great success, with 46 people competing. Martin Newman won the singles stableford competition, Patrick Woolmington was second and Noel Scully third. The longest drive prizes were won by John Pearce and Sandy Packer, and nearest the pin went to Wolfgang Abfalterer, who nearly scored an ace. A collection was taken at the end of the event in aid of Mediterranea, with a total of €1,065 going to the charity.

FLAVOURS OF THE MED Life & Living

Among the many different types of turrón are the soft-textured Jijona ones and the Alicante variety, which is hard.

By Gillaine Hathaway

IT’S PARTY TIME! We all know that Spaniards are a party loving nation and the arrival of December means that this is the time to get ready for non-stop fun. Christmas in Spain means 12 days of round-the-clock celebrations, customs dating back many centuries. Christmas Eve is the most important meal of the festive season apart from New Year’s Eve and the all-important Three Kings on 6 January, when the presents are handed out, just as the Three Kings gave their presents to Jesus after his birth. Today Spanish families give most of the presents on Christmas Day, following the custom in other countries and influenced by the fact that school starts again so soon after the arrival of the Three Kings that there is little time for the children to enjoy and play with their presents.

TURRÓN DE JIJONA Ingredients: 1 dessertspoon ground cinnamon 250 gr sugar 250 gr white honey 250 gr. each of toasted almonds and toasted hazelnuts 5 egg whites • Chop the nuts finely and then crush them with a pestle and mortar until they become a smooth paste. • Heat the egg whites until stiff and then add in the nuts. Another star is turrón, which is available all over Spain. Legend has it that it was originally an offering to the goddess Bazalat in Asia Minor and was brought to Spain by the Carthaginians a thousand years before Christ was born. Others say it was a Roman New Year custom, but most probably turrón came to Spain with the Arab invasion in the eighth century.

ROSCÓN DE REYES Ingredients: 400 gr plain flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 100 gr caster sugar 100 gr softened butter

3 eggs 1/4 litre milk zest of 1 lemon pinch of salt dried mix peel for decoration

• Put 100 grams of the flour into a bowl. Mix the baking powder in a glass with four tablespoons of the milk and then add this to flour and mix together until it forms dough. Cover with a tea towel and set aside until it doubles in size.

But “Los Reyes” is still a very special day. It’s the climax of the Christmas and New Year festivities and is full of culinary specials. Specials which feature sweetmeats, cakes and biscuits, and the star of this throughout Spain is “roscón de reyes”, a delicious bread-style cake which is traditionally eaten with a mug of hot chocolate on the night of the Epiphany to celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men bearing their gifts for the children.

• Put the remaining 300 grams of flour in another bowl and add the eggs, sugar, salt, lemon zest and rest of the milk. Mix together well and then beat in the butter and continue mixing for a further two minutes.

You can buy the ready-made version of this, together with all the piles of sweetmeats on the shelves in local shops, but there is nothing like making them at home. Not only taste-wise but money-wise too.

• Put some little figures wrapped up in foil inside the mixture and also a broad bean. (Whoever finds the bean, according to tradition, can expect to receive coal rather than presents from the Three Kings.)

• Then add the dough mixture and mix well until both are thoroughly incorporated and a smooth dough is achieved. • Cover once again and set aside for a further two hours. • Then kneed the mixture a little before forming into it a ring and placing it on the baking tray lined with baking parchment.

• Brush with milk, decorate with the mixed peel, lightly sprinkle with sugar and cook in a pre-heated oven at 160ºC for 15 to 20 minutes. • Allow to cool and then serve.

60

• In a saucepan heat the honey and sugar and bring to the boil. Add the paste to the honey mixture and stir constantly for around 10 minutes. • Remove from the heat and place in a shallow tin lined with rice paper. • Leave to cool and then sprinkle with the cinnamon.

Mallorca has its own version of turrón, which is made with hazelnuts…

• All you have to do then is to cut the turrón into squares and enjoy.

TURRÓN DE AVELLANA

TURRÓN DE ALICANTE

Ingredients: 286 gr hazelnuts 55 gr almonds, also roasted and skinned 3 large egg whites 170 gr hard honey 170 gr caster sugar 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon rice paper and parchment paper

• Roast the nuts until the skins rub off and the nuts are a pale golden colour. Then grind them in a food processor until fine. • Whisk the egg white in a bowl until stiff then carefully fold the nuts. • Cover and leave in a cool place while you melt the honey and sugar together in a heavy bottomed pan. Bring to the boil and then immediately lower the heat. • Add the nut mixture and continue to cook over a low heat for around 10 to 12 minutes, stirring all the time so the mixture does not become sticky. • Turn out into a shallow tin lined with the rice paper. Cover with another layer of baking parchment and leave overnight to set. • Then remove the top paper, sprinkle with cinnamon and cut into squares.

Ingredients: 1 kg rosemary honey 500 gr sugar 2 egg whites 1.500 gr almonds warmed on a tray in the oven rind of 1 lemon • In a saucepan over a gentle heat, heat the honey until all the water it contains has evaporated. Then add the sugar and mix well with a wooden spoon. • Beat the egg whites until stiff and then add to the mixture and stir briskly for eight to 10 minutes. Lower the heat and stir slowly until the mixture turns brown and begins to caramelise. • Now stir in the hot almonds and the lemon rind. Keep stirring for a few minutes then pour into a shallow tine lined with rice paper. • Leave to cool for around two and a half hours and then cut into pieces. • When completely cold the slices can be stored in an airtight container.

Wine of the Month

Wine: Finca Biniagual Verán 2006 Type: Dry red Winery: Bodega Biniaqual (bodegabiniagual.com) Winemaker: Pere Obrador Location: Llogaret de Biniaqual Composition: 50% Manto Negro, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Shiraz Source of grapes: The vine stocks of the Biniagual bodega are firmly rooted in traditional wine-growing soil that is excellently suited for cultivating grapes. They are located geographically between Binissalem and Biniali, where wine was cultivated as early as the 13th century. In the tradition of old Mallorcan wines, in addition to other grape varieties such as Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, they also cultivate the native Mantonegro grape, which forms the basis for all of their red wines. Winemaking process: The grapes are manually collected and processed in the traditional manner. The grapes are allowed to cold-soak for 17 days before fermenting in 4,600-litre and 8,850-litre stainless steel deposits at controlled temperatures. The wine is then aged 13 months in French and American oak barrels. Serve with: This wine is an elegant and robust medium body wine and I would recommend drinking it with a roast or gamey dish this festive season. Available to buy at: El Corte Inglés in Palma; or contact Vins I Licors – Tel. 971 604 503.

Tastes of mallorca Life & Living Restaurante Pinos

A Feast for the Senses Tucked away up in Sol de Mallorca is a little bit of luxury. Restaurante Pinos offers a discreet ambience, amazing service and the finest menu to please even the most discerning diner.

In summer the large terrace offers a spectacular view over the bay of Palma but, as we visited on a wet evening in winter, the warm welcome from the attentive staff, matched by the log-burning stove, added a romantic feel to the chic décor. Oldus, Kai, Bettina and the rest of the team were waiting to serve us and make our evening one to remember. It is clear that a great deal of thought has gone into the Mediterranean design of the restaurant interior, which includes original works of art hung on the walls. Currently the featured artist is Vivien Borsani, displaying colourful aspects of Mallorca. And so to the food… Starters include fried Provolone cheese on peach orange chutney and sate and Thai salad, and both were just simply delicious!

For mains my companion chose goose with red cabbage and dumplings. Despite its reputation, there was nothing greasy about this meat, which was cooked to perfection. I had previously been recommended the oriental duck, which arrived with rice and crisp vegetables. To go with both poultry dishes, we were recommended a 2005 Baron de Õna Reserva Rioja, which complemented the subtle richness of the meat. Other choices on the menu included homemade lobster ravioli, steak tartar “classic style” and pasta and chicken breast with sun-dried tomatoes and roasted seeds. Every attention was paid by the team of waiting staff, who clearly wanted to make sure our experience was as good as it could be. People in the know gather at Pinos and, on the evening we were there, Cynthia Lennon was among the

diners. However, with a large, yet intimate, dining area there are plenty of corners to be as private as you wish to be. Restaurante Pinos is a feast for the senses. Everywhere you look there is understated beauty. Everything you eat is impeccable and everything you feel is harmonious. The philosophy of the restaurant comes from Oscar Wilde – “Of everything only the best” – and it fulfils this to the nth degree. To find Restaurante Pinos follow the signs for Sol de Mallorca and the casino from Magaluf – the restaurant is clearly signposted. Open daily. Tel. (+34) 971 13 30 93

DRIVE IT FURTHER

Golf lesson

Hitting a driver can be likened to watering the flowers with a garden hose. To reach the flowers at the very back you have to get the trajectory just right. Too low and the water doesn’t reach; too high and it won’t reach either. Somewhere in between is the point where the water carries the farthest for that particular water pressure. Your swing speed is the water pressure and in this issue I will explain how you can increase the distance you hit the golf ball with your driver, without swinging it faster. There are four basic components that determine how far a golf ball will fly: clubhead speed at impact, launch angle, backspin and centredness of strike. We are not going to change the clubhead speed and, of course, we all know the ball will go further if it comes off the centre of the clubface. To get the most from our new 460cc Titanium drivers we must INCREASE the launch angle AND at the same time REDUCE the backspin. We do this by simply hitting the ball on the UPSWING. With the irons we should be hitting the ball then the ground (see last month’s “Strike it Better” article). With fairway woods we should collect the ball at the bottom of the swing arc. With the driver we want to be hitting the ball AFTER the bottom of the arc when the clubhead is on the rise. The club itself is designed for this. A typical tour player will have a clubhead speed of between 110 and 120mph (177 to 193kph) with a driver, and hit it from the centre most of the time. The ideal launch angle is around 12° and the backspin around 2000rpm. The tour drivers have 8° or 9° of loft on the face to allow them to be hit on the up and produce the required 12° launch angle. It is the upward blow that reduces the backspin. Pictured: The Cobra team using Trackman (dopplar radar technology)… note the tee height and ball position.

68

PRACTICE DRILL • Put the ball more forward in your stance and tee it higher. • Practice until you can hit it up but leave the tee peg in the ground. • If you get under the ball and “sky it” the solution is NOT lowering the tee. Lowering the tee leads to steeper downswings, which increase backspin. • You CANNOT hit UP from a low tee and find the middle of the clubface. pin

BACKSPIN The appropriate rate of backspin can only generated by an upward blow to the golf ball with the driver. In this photo of 2005 US Open Michael Campbell, note the tee height and the tee still in place AFTER impact.generated.

HOW TO EAT LESS OVER CHRISTMAS • Put your knife and fork down between each mouthful – if it is a sandwich then put that down and pause between each mouthful. • Chew each mouthful thoroughly, appreciate the flavours, think about what you are eating and take your time

COLOUR FOR HEALTH Blue to the rescue Of the more than 600 flavanoids found in plants, many can be found in blueberries, blackberries, black soy beans, aubergines, beetroots, figs, plums and purple grapes. These are powerful antioxidants that protect our cells from damage. Red to reduce inflammation Cherries, both dried and fresh, and 100 per cent cherry juice have inflammatory benefits. A serving of cherries after exercising can help speed muscle repair and ease muscle soreness. Red-fleshed blood oranges eaten on a regular basis have been found to reduce weight gain. Also try raspberries, pomegranates, strawberries, watermelon, grapefruit, tomatoes, red pepper, radishes and red cabbage. Orange and yellow to mellow If you constantly battle with being ill, build up your immune system with these coloured fruits. Caratanoids, which are what give these fruits and vegetables their bright yellow and orange colours, are converted by the body into vitamin A, which improves the immune system. Try sweet potatoes, pumpkins, carrots, yellow tomatoes and peppers, peaches, mangoes, apricots and pineapples. Green for vitality Improve the health and function of your senses. The green in peppers is high in lutein, which works with the caratanoid zeaxanthin (corn, egg yolks, peppers, oranges and grapes) to combat eye degeneration as we age. Eat green peppers, courgettes, broccoli, spinach, romaine lettuce and dark leafy greens. White for the heart This contains a pigment called anthoxanthin and allacin, which support a healthy cardiovascular system and reduce cancer risks… cauliflower, garlic, ginger, jicama, onions and turnips.

70

• Eat exactly what you are craving. If you are eating a balanced diet and drinking lots of water then you should not have cravings but, if you do, distract yourself – if the craving does not go away indulge yourself then get straight back into your healthy eating. If you eat what you think you should and do not enjoy it, in the end you will probably eat what you were originally craving and end up by eating twice as much. • Stop eating before you are full. Wait 20 minutes; if you are still hungry then have some more, but nine out of 10 times you will find that you are full. It takes 20 minutes for the brain to tune into the signals from the stomach reporting that it is full. We continue eating without tuning into these signals, which is why when you finish eating quite often you feel over-full. • When eating never engage in another activity. Eating should be an experience you enjoy and focus on. If you are not concentrating on it then quite often you feel as though you have not eaten or do not realise how much you are eating and over-eat.

WORK THOSE BUNS!

BAD LOWER BACK

Work those glutes (bum cheeks) while you are walking; squeeze each check as you move each leg.

Ninety per cent of the population suffer from lower back problems at some point in their life. Sitting for long periods of time shortens the muscles down the back of the legs, which pulls on the lower back. Also, incorrect sitting and standing postures can put undue stresses on the back. Try this exercise to strengthen the lower back and then the following stretch to relieve tightness in the lower back.

Quick circuit you can do anywhere: Thirty seconds of high leg kicks; bend the supporting knee and contract your stomach muscles to protect your lower back. There are four points to this kick; bring the foot of the kicking leg up to your bottom, kick out from your bottom, through your heel, and return the foot back to the bottom before releasing it to the ground. Repeat for 30 seconds with the other leg. Then 30 seconds of speed squats. Feet parallel, contract your stomach muscles, lean back and bring your arms forward, and try to get your thighs parallel to the floor – if you have knee problems don’t go any lower than this. When you look down you should still be able to see your toes. Make sure your ankles and knees are in line; do not allow your knees to travel forward beyond your toes. See how many you can do in 30 seconds. Walking lunges for one minute each leg… take nice big strides, sink down as low as you can go (again ensuring that your toes are in line with your ankles – use a weight to make it harder), pause slightly as you lunge, then push through your bent knee and return to standing. Repeat all on one leg before changing legs. Lie on your back on the floor with your legs bent. Feet under your knees, squeeze your bottom and lift your bottom in the air. Hold and squeeze for 30 seconds; let your body relax down but do not touch the floor. Repeat the squeeze to the top of the motion and hold again for 30 seconds; continue this sequence 10 times. Stand up and do high knees in place for 30 seconds. Raise your knees as high as you can and touch them with your hands. Repeat this sequence three times.

Birdog On your hands and knees, hands underneath your shoulders and knees underneath your hips, straighten your opposite arm and leg. Let your head remain in a neutral position with your spine. Reach out as far as you can, squeeze your bottom, hold for a few seconds and then release. Repeat 20 times for each leg/arm. Lower back stretch Lay on your back with your legs flat and straight. Bend one leg and draw your knee into your chest and hug it with your arms; relax your lower back into the floor. Hold for 30 seconds and breathe deeply. Repeat with your other leg. Next, when you bring the knee into the chest, take it over to the other side of your body, toward the floor – if it is your right knee then take it to the left side of the body in line with your hip if possible. Push the knee gently towards the floor with your left hand and twist your upper body to the right. Reach the right arm out to the side and turn your head to look over your right shoulder. Hold this for 30 seconds and then repeat with the other side.

POMEGRANATES IN SEASON Pomegranates have many health benefits: • Rich source of antioxidants. • Lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL). • Promote blood flow. • Help reduce risk of breast and skin cancer. • One pomegranate has only 100 calories. • Great source of potassium.

INTERVAL TRAINING This is a great way to burn a lot of calories in a short amount of time. You can do this on a treadmill or outside. Warm up first with a fast walk for 10 minutes, then run as fast as you can for 30 seconds; slow down to a walking pace and get your breath back for two minutes, then run as fast as you can for 30 seconds. Repeat this cycle 10 times. This training not only burns more calories than running the same distance at the same moderate pace, but it also continues to burn more calories afterwards.

• Contains lots of vitamin B and C. • Is an excellent source of fibre. An easy way to de-seed a pomegranate is to cut it in half and put it in bowl of water. You will find that as you gently work with the pomegranate, releasing the seeds, they drop out relatively easy. The seeds then sink to the bottom while the bitter pith floats. Or cut it in half and eat with a toothpick – great snacks for the kids. Put these seeds in salads and smoothies, and on cereals, or just eat them as a nutritious tasty snack.

FIGHTING ALERGIES For a runny nose and swelling lips… apples, onions and grapes. Quercitin, an antioxidant, prevents your body from releasing histamines. For a stuffy nose and breathing problems… pineapple. Bromelain, an anti inflammatory enzyme, relieves swelling of the nose. For an itchy throat… avoid bananas, melons and cucumbers.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Life & Living

‘Tis the season to be... beautiful with Allegra Curtis It’s the holiday season… a time of creature comforts, warm thoughts and being with the ones we love the most. A favourite gift is always the newest and most special beauty product, and I recently discovered a 100 per cent organic hair care line called Less is More, created in Vienna at a small exclusive salon. This amazing line is the most modern eco-friendly hair product to date. I have never seen my hair so shiny and healthy just by shampooing with Evening Primrose, for all hair types, and following that with Jojoba Olive conditioner for the healthiest, soft and touchable hair ever! Plus you will smell delicious with a touch of ylang ylang added to the ingredients. These are phenomenal products that you can trust. If you give this line as a gift you will have a clear conscience because the products are touched by nature, and the earth. Gifts to show your love should be original and totally one of a kind, so I am always trying to discover the most innovative and decadent products that mix a bit of whimsy with a modern touch. That’s why, when I discovered this exquisite line, In Fiore, with its deep crimson-coloured jars with sensual blossom emblems on the front, I was over overjoyed. These are gifts that will truly come from the heart and soul, because they are so unique. They are the favourites of Hollywood stars including Julia Roberts and Meg Ryan, and were available in San Francisco only by appointment until recently. To my great delight they are now available to us in Spain through Beauty Cube, a company that specialises in niche products. Get taken away to exotic destinations with delicious body balms such as Tiagi, soothing, fresh mixes of lavender balanced out by fusions of neroli blossom. Or indulge in Dyala,

72

paradise on earth, a euphoric blend of Indian jasmine and essential oil of lemon grass. All products by In Fiore are totally luxurious, absorbing directly into the skin after you have taken a hot, healing bath. We all know how stressful the holidays can be, so I advise getting your best girl friend a gift that will send her to an exotic destination, where the air smells of orange blossoms and neroli in her mind. In Fiore products are guaranteed to indulge those you love. They have exquisite solid perfumes, of which my personal favourite is Fleur Blanche… total floral seduction with white tuberose orange blossom and Madagascar vanilla. Or you can explore Night Queen: three types of jasmine flowers, with bergamot peel and just a delicious hint of rose petal, saffron and patchouli. Indulge and celebrate these wonderfully meaningful times with gifts that enrich the spirit and reflect the warmth of holiday season joy. If you have friends and loved ones where only high-tech will do then try NuBo, whose motto is performance, speed and luxury. This line is truly the Porsche of new skin care lines on the market, and the results are awe-inspiring. Now who would not want to give a gift like that? I personally can only say wow!. I have tried many skin care lines, and NuBo is on the top of my list. It is the most effective skin care products, literally giving you a new skin texture for the upcoming year. What I love most is that after three steps your skin will immediately have a velvety and radiant glow. Cleanse with exfoliating foaming cleanser, gentle enough for daily use, and follow with Radiance Boost. As the last step use the most cell-dynamic product, simply called The Essence, which is as light as a gentle breeze, but so effective you will see immediate results. These are gifts that befit our modern times, a mix of contemporary efficiency while also allowing you to slow down and enjoy all the fruits of nature. Let us all have a warm and lovely holiday season, one-stop shopping when you go to Beauty Cube. Enjoy all the gifts of the season… you never know what else you might find. Keep an open heart and mind to consider all the newest products these pacesetting companies have on offer.

FaMily Fun… whatever the weather

It’s that time of the year again when our beautiful island starts to slow down. Temperatures have dropped, days out at the beach are a distant memory and your favourite restaurant has closed its doors, leaving yourself at a bit of a loss as to what to do on a cold, rainy day. It’s times like these when we would do well to remember all that the island has to offer, and one of the many things on my list of “things to do when the beach isn’t an option” was the Palma Aquarium, so when the heavens opened we grabbed our umbrellas and headed over. Having a baby in tow really tested the aquarium’s ability to cater for families. However, I’m pleased to say it came up trumps. There were toilets and changing facilities everywhere; huge cushions to plonk yourself down on whilst you gazed up in wonder at the huge illuminated tanks teeming with colourful sea creatures; and plenty of sights and activities to keep the most boisterous children enthralled. The layout takes you on a journey, starting with “The Old World”, showing the relationship of humans to the marine world over the years; and “The New World”, represented by tropical ocean ecosystems from the areas of Oceania, Asia and America. It then moves through to “The Jungle”,

If you are a certified PADI diver (and feeling brave!) there is the chance to swim with the sharks. Good night shark – a night to remember! Children have the opportunity to stay overnight under the care and education of the marine park staff. Dining with the sharks – dine next to the deepest shark tank in Europe. which is a perfect replica of a jungle ecosystem; the deepest shark tank in Europe, called “The Big Blue”; and lastly the “Jellyfish Cylinder”, which proved to be very popular with my nephew! The information provided as you walk through the aquarium really is fantastic and strikingly user-friendly, through the use of computerised information points in a range of different languages. The aquarium’s constant campaigns to preserve and protect the oceans and their inhabitants are clear, making it both an enjoyable and an educa-

Christmas… but once a year Maybe so, but the anxiety leading up to it lasts about as long as the gestation period of a human being. Although, I suppose in the case of Christmas, this bit of biology doesn’t really apply. Who knows? The annual dilemma of the Christmas card list starts very early, especially if you have correspondents (last seen in the ‘50s) in places not entirely penetrated by a postal service, like Australia and the west coast of Scotland. If we don’t send any we won’t get any back and be left with a pathetically bare mantelpiece when visitors call. In our heyday we received 114 cards, seven more than our nearest rivals. Fortunately, we kept most of them and each year put out about 45 of them (any more would raise eyebrows), pride of place at the front, always reserved for the one we got from the Governor of Hong Kong in 1977. We don’t miss all those family newsletters, craftily hidden inside cards and full of selfsatisfied good news. We really don’t want to know that young Crispin has been selected for the First XV. We don’t even know who he is. Or that Camilla and Rupert have just bought a “little” (means… big) place in the Dordogne, when we are slowly but surely eating away at the last of our life savings. But the real heartache remains. Where are we going to spend Christmas Day this year? One daughter is with the in-laws (it’s their turn); the other is off to Thailand, a destination denied us by the cost of travel insurance – a stark reminder of our mortality. We consider everything from a €120 lunch at the posh local restaurant to a cruise around South America at

€5,000. We reject them all; we might find ourselves seated next to someone whose grandchildren have all won scholarships to Cambridge University. So we console ourselves by recalling a family Christmas lunch that didn’t go entirely to plan. Our daughter had sacrificially invited us, along with my wife’s ageing, widowed mother. The result of weeks of meticulous planning and careful shopping by our daughter was a festive board of unrivalled slendour: guinea fowl; pheasant breast; Barbary duck sourced in the Loue region of France, with berry sauce from New England; artichokes from Jerusalem; mange tout flown in from the Western Cape; watercress garnish gathered from the limpid streams of the Taurus moun-

tains; sweet potatoes roasted in goose fat; and parsnips prized from the frozen soil of Lincolnshire to be beaten into a souffle in the shape of a reindeer. Called to the table by our proud daughter, mother-in-law cast an eagle eye over the glittering table and enquired… “Where are the Brussels sprouts?” I know, let’s have a Chinese delivered this year and watch The Sound of Music.

WHAT’S ON IN december AND JANUARY

The BIC (Baleares International College) Christmas Fayre starts at 10am and goes on all day until 6pm. All the students have worked hard to create a winter wonderland at the school in San Augusti and they invite everyone to go along and join in the festive fun.

Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th

days it is marked by the lighting of bonfires across the island and people “fire jumping” to ward off illness and evil spirits.

Wednesday 22nd

El Gordo! The Big One is the annual national lottery that brings the island (and the country) to a standstill for hours as the numbers are pulled out live on TV. The Lotería de Navidad (to give it its proper name) is the biggest payout of the year. Just about everyone buys at least one ticket and schoolchildren sing out the numbers as they are drawn live. If you haven’t got a number it’s a great time to go shopping as the roads are quiet… just don’t expect to get served in a shop!

2011

december Good people of Mallorca, you know that I love you all… in different ways (well, everyone except Frank Leavers, who I have still not forgiven for beating me in the Not So Strictly Dance competition three years ago, but as he has gone to Australia he doesn’t count any more). I don’t want anyone to take offence in anyway but there are certain questions that I really wish you would stop asking me. In order of irritation they go like this: 1. What happened to Luna Radio? 2. When is Luna Radio coming back? 3. Where’s your hat? 4. What are you doing for Christmas? 5. Are you related to Suzy Perry (or even ARE you Suzy Perry?) In order to save me repeating myself through 2011 here are the answers: 1. The Balearic Government closed it down. 2. Friday 1 April 2011 3. Under my chair… or on my head! 4. No idea… but open to offers! 5. No, but I would like to be.

So that’s all claro? Bien! I was thinking of having a T-shirt made that said, “Don’t ask me, I haven’t a clue.” This would come in handy at the Calvià quiz league nights when it is becoming increasingly obvious to me that the more I learn the less I know. One thing I am sure of is that anyone who says nothing happens here on Mallorca in the winter should join Widdecombe, Wagner and McKeith in their cosy padded cell! There is plenty to do if you know where to look and where to go; plus we are just about to embark on the fabulous festive season. Take a look at the What’s On section for all the fun of the fayres and much more besides. There is rumour going around that I am soon going to be wearing fishnets, slapping my thighs and fluttering my eyelashes at a girl. Panto season is also here with the very British tradition of men dressing in women’s clothing, women dressing in men’s clothing and two people squeezing into a spotted cow outfit. Have you ever tried to explain a pantomime to someone who has never seen one before? They look at you as if you are the biggest pervert on the planet. Then when you tell them it is to entertain kids they almost call the Guardia! Panto has to be experienced; it can’t be explained. So gird your loins for Mother Goose, coming to the Sa Societat theatre in Calvià in 2011. If I don’t bump into you at one of the Crimbo bashes here on the island, let me wish you and yours a joyous, warm, fluffy, bellylaughing-filled festive season. We Brits are good when the chips are down and so, even if there’s no dosh for chips (or turkey), we still know how to enjoy ourselves. So eat, drink and (most of all) be merry. Tune in to the radio shows over the tinsel season to hear all those cheesy Christmas hits. All together now (in the style of Noddy Holder)… IT’S CHRISTTTMASSS! (Laura Penn presents English Radio Mallorca every Saturday and Sunday from 10am till 1pm on 92.9FM, Radio Marratxi.)

Friday 3rd

The members of ESRA North (English Speaking Residents Association) are a busy bunch, especially during the winter. Gary Hardley and his gang kick off their Christmas celebrations with a luncheon at Trio Restaurant in Puerto Pollença. There will be live music from Becky Lane and crackers and party hats all round.

Saturday 4th

The Mallorca branch of Age Concern is having its seventh annual Christmas lunch at Meson Son Ferrer restaurant in Son Ferrer, and each year it gets better and better. The meal is a traditional affair of turkey with all the trimmings and the charity will provide transport from various pick-up points. The fantastic group Whiskers will get those feet tapping and there may even be a Christmas singalong… look out for Christmas puddings brought in from the UK. Email acmallorca@ageconcern-espana.org.

Sunday 5th

Every year Calvià Town Hall put on a big Christmas Fayre and live free concert in Puerto Portals. This year is no exception, with local singers and artists performing all day and over 60 stalls selling every kind of festive item you can think of. The mulled wine will be flowing and the music playing, and Santa will be there collecting donated gifts for local children’s charities.

Monday 6th (Constitution Day)

Get ready for a week of fiestas and the unofficial start to Christmas. Constitution Day commemorates the ratification of the new constitution of Spain in 1978, after the death of Franco. Constitution Day has been a national holiday on 6 December each year in Spain since then.

Wednesday 8th (Feast of Inmaculada)

After the unofficial start, the official start of the festive season is the “Inmaculada” – the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This fiesta has particular significance as the Virgin Mary is Spain’s patron saint. Many people will “bridge” the two fiestas by taking an extra day off so look out for places being closed on the 7th too.

Friday 10th

We are really in full party season now with Diamond Events organising a Christmas dinner and party at Mood Restaurant in Costa d’en Blanes. There will be a “Fantastically Festive DJ” in what is being billed as “The Ultimate Christmas Party!” Tickets are €50 per person to include a welcome glass of cava and a three-course Christmas meal with wine, beer, soft drinks and coffee. Email: jo@ diamondevents.es

Friday 10th

Lindi Lous Bar in Santa Ponça has been a popular hang-out and drop-in place for local residents for many years. Linda Lou herself is a well-known local character and she invites you to her annual Christmas Party… just as long as you wear fancy dress!

The Country Club in Santa Ponça is a great setting for the two-day Christmas Fayre that has been part of the festive calendar for a few years now. It’s a chance to pick up some unique Christmas gifts including arts and crafts, jewellery, candles and much more. Open to non-members of the club.

Sunday 12th

The annual Christmas outing for the association Cuidadanos Europeos (European Citizens) has a fishy feel this year. Members of the group are heading to the Palma Aquarium for a Jazz Matinee with optional lunch. The event starts at 11am with a glass of cava, followed by a talk on “Save the Bluefin Tuna”. Then there will be a concert by Coral Sant Jaume with 48 singers directed by José María Moreno. The outing is free to members and €15 to non-members.

Thursday 23rd

Sunday 12th

Friday 24th

What is Christmas without a warble? There are several opportunities to drown out your neighbour with Good King Wenceslas this festive season. The first is the popular carol service at the Palmanova Church San Lorenzo. There will be readings and possibly a famous face or two on the altar leading the singing. It all starts at 4.30pm

Wednesday 15th

Having warmed up the vocal cords, the next chance to belt out Silent Night comes a few days later at the Upper Room Christian Fellowship Church in Magaluf… more carols and readings and the odd glass of mulled wine thrown in to help reach the high notes. This one is an evening event starting at 7pm.

Saturday 18th

Starting with a sponsored bike ride in aid of the BenSMiles (Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz) and Amriticia charities, Mood Restaurant in Costa d’en Blanes is having a day of festive fun for all the family. The cycle ride starts at 12 noon in Magaluf and ends at Mood where there is a Christmas Fayre from 1pm. There will be a hog-roast, mince pie stalls, Swedish mulled wine, last-minute Christmas gifts, Santa’s grotto, prize raffle, fun and games for the kids. The Georgie Insull Singers perform Christmas carols at 3pm and the event continues till 6pm.

Sunday 19th

The stunning setting of the Hotel La Residencia is the venue for yet another Christmas Fayre… more mince pies, mulled wine and Santa hats.

Tuesday 21st

The Winter Solstice is celebrated on Mallorca with the “hogueras” or bonfires. This tradition started long before Christmas and it observes the shortest day of the year and the beginning of winter. In the past it was an important Pagan feast day but these

Every year the villagers of Es Capdella near Calvià get together in the town square for a really cute festive carol singalong. If this doesn’t get you in the Christmas spirit then you really are a Scrooge! Kids holding candles and belting out Silent Night ought to make anyone reach for a hanky. Everyone is welcome to join in, and there is a glass of mulled wine on offer afterwards.

Christmas Eve is quite rightly called Nochebuena… one the best nights of the year. Take a walk around Palma and see the “nacimientos” or nativity scenes. Some are really spectacular. The tradition of making the “belén” originated in Italy but the Mallorquins have turned it into an art form. The midnight mass service at Palma cathedral is usually standing room only and the party starts afterwards. As they say, “Esta noche es nochebuena, y no es noche de dormir” (“This is the good night, and not meant for sleep”).

Saturday 25th

Navidad! Eat, drink and be merry!

Tuesday 28th

Los Inocentes… the Feast of the Holy Innocents is a bit like our April Fools’ Day when people play side-splitting practical jokes on each other. When someone falls victim to a jolly prank the joker shouts “inocente, inocente!” Look out for the local and national media getting in on the act too, so news that Mallorquins are offering free drinks down at your local bar should be treated with caution!

Friday 31st

In addition to the end-of-year booze up, the last day of 2010 is the traditional Fiesta de L’Estandard, which commemorates the Christian conquest of Palma by Rey Jaime I in 1229. A massive procession makes its way from the town hall to the La Seu cathedral for a service. Afterwards everyone tucks into a lavish barbecue and there is traditional Bal de Bot dancing. So you would think that after a December of Bacchanalian feasting and indulgence it would be time to give the stomach and liver a rest? But no… not here on Mallorca!

Wednesday 5th & Thursday 6th January 2011

The 6th January is the Feast of the Epiphany and is the traditional time for Mallorquins to give and receive gifts. The night before on the 5th Los Tres Reyes Magos (The Three Kings) arrive by boat in ports all over the island. The main procession is in Palma where the Kings arrive at the Moll Vell (Old Port) and travel by horse through the streets of La Longa to the town hall throwing sweets to the children – and adults – as they go. (According to tradition they ride camels but there are no camels on Mallorca!) Look out for clever folk who hang umbrellas upside down from balconies to catch the sweets. When the parade is over everyone goes home to exchange gifts after midnight. So, surely that’s it… but no! Just when you thought you were partied out, along comes San Sebastian…

Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th January 2011

The Fiesta of San Sebastián is a big event in Palma as it is in honour of the city’s patron saint. Sebastian was a Roman centurion who came to a sticky end, killed by many arrows. Legend has it that a relic of one of these arrows came to Palma on a boat and instantly stopped the plague that was raging through the city at the time. Since then the citizens of Palma have celebrated their adopted saint by holding concerts in each square of the city and having a massive (really massive) fireworks display on the night of the 20th. That is about it for now, but then there is the Feast of Sant Antoni, the patron saint of animals, also in January, and Carnival and a pantomime to look forward to in February… its never dull here on Mallorca.

islAnd bulletin LIFE & LIVING CRICKETING AND FOOTBALLING PIRATES They may be some of the fittest people on the island but the cast of the Pirates Adventure show in Magaluf failed to perform in two annual sporting events. At the end of each summer season the acrobats, dancers and gymnasts of the ever-popular stage show compete in a cricket match against the Mallorca Cricket Club and a football match against a local expat team, the Hooligans. At the MCC the emphasis was on fun with the Pirates all attired in fancy dress costumes. The action on the pitch was less light-hearted, and the result was a triumph of experience over enthusiasm as the home team won by just three runs. The football match was a much more serious affair. After losing 6-1 last year the Pirates were out for revenge but could not quite equal the skill of the Hooligans, who won 3-2. The captain of the disappointed Pirates team, Aron Garner, vowed to return in 2011 using different tactics. “Next year we are going to cheat,” he said.

MAJOR FUN AT MINI GOLF FANTASIA Certain events are now well-established on the calendar for Mallorca residents. One is the annual mini-golf tournament at Golf Fantasia, which just celebrated its 21st year. A record number of 117 would-be Tiger Woods of all ages took part in the two-day contest of avoiding windmills and scooping balls out of lakes. The winner of the adult competition was pensioner Antonio Rodriquez, who won a trophy and a holiday to Extremadura. In the evening 120 people attended a gala dinner at the Gran Casino Mallorca, where Calvià councillor Manolo Grillé presented the prizes. On the Sunday Paco López won the juniors section and in the infants competition Jayar Hoedet romped home with an impressive 39 points, a score that beat most adult players! The kids all enjoyed a special lunch before the presentation of prizes and medals. If you like playing a mini round and you missed out this time, a new minigolf tournament is being planned at Expedition Golf in Magaluf for spring 2011.

DING DONG… AVON IN THE PINK FOR BREAST CANCER Doing their bit for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, a bunch of Avon girls threw a party at Roosters Restaurant in Palmanova to inform and entertain. It was a very pink and girly event but with a serious message about how to check for the first signs of breast cancer. Local Declaring the whole event “fabulous”, Avon representative Debra Hart (pictured second from right) said, “We are all about making ladies feel good about themselves. Nearly 16,000 women in Spain are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, which is why Avon supports this awareness campaign.”

CYCLING PILGRIMAGE IN AID OF CHARITY He expected to cycle 716 kilometres but it ended up being almost 200 more! One of Mallorca´s most popular entertainers, Liam Live, set off on the pilgrimage and spiritual journey of St James, the Camino de Santiago, to raise money for underprivileged children and the charity Help for Heroes. The map said that the route from Pamplona to Santiago de Compostela was 716 kilometres and would take nine days but, with detours to experience the local sites and a heavy pack to carry on his bike, the actual distance covered was just under 900 kilometres and it took a couple of extra days. Bad weather conditions also slowed Liam’s progress as he battled with strong headwinds and even snow. Camping out at night and cycling for 14 hours a day, he lost 18 kilos in weight on his journey. However, he gained friends and respect and raised money for two very worthy charities. This is the latest in a number of challenges that Liam has undertaken for charity, and he intends to do more. Find out more about the man and his music at: liamlive.com.

ENGLISH RADIO MALLORCA MOVES TO NEW STUDIOS Every Saturday and Sunday mornings a little bit of madness explodes on the radio as the English Radio Mallorca team broadcast their programmes on 92.9FM, Radio Marratxi. As the only English radio on the island the shows have gathered a loyal following of listeners who tune in each weekend to catch up on news, sport and gossip, and generally be a part of the experience. Recently the team was delighted when Radio Marratxi moved from old studios in Sa Cabaneta to a new penthouse studio complex in Es Pont d´Inca. “This is brilliant,” said founder presenter Laura Penn, “There’s more room for guests, we have a bar, steam room and a Jacuzzi, and it smells better than the old studio!”

The students of the Pauline Quirke Academy presented an end-of term showcase on the theme of Michael Jackson’s “History” at the Es Generador Cultural Centre in Son Caliu. Melissa Cursons, the academy’s new musical theatre teacher, spent Saturday mornings putting the show together with each group, the ages ranging from six to 18 years. A singer and dancer herself, Melissa has been passing on all her knowledge and enthusiasm to the students with great success.

islAnd bulletin BLOW-DRY MARATHON FOR CHARITY What could be better than getting a pamper while raising money for charity? Ladies in the know popped down to Salon Bling in Palmanova for a wash, blow-dry and glass of something bubbly from hairdresser Allison Hookings. During the day over €200 went into the pot to support the Ben Miles charity cycle ride and the Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz – and many shiny, happy heads left the salon!

GETTING INTO THE CHRISTMAS MOOD

Laura is the main host and she is joined each weekend by other core presenters such as Aron Garner, Mad Lord Mellion from Pirates Adventure, Gary Hardley from ESRA North, Handsome Hans from Holland and Linda (Mrs Doubtfire) Ledwidge. “Anyone is welcome to come and join us,” said Laura, “if they are brave enough!”

PQA prides itself on its “New Unique Creative Stages Award Scheme”, where each student works towards goals and awards so they have fun while learning new techniques and skills along the way. Proud parents and friends filled the cultural centre and the showcase was deemed a great success by all.

Popular performers from the island will perform over the Christmas period at Mood Beach in Costa d’en Blanes. Recently wed Arron Reece will be singing on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, when he will be joined by Jon Paul Bradshaw. JP has just returned from a successful tour in Germany.

PQA is held at the Agora School in Portals 10am-1pm every Saturday: pqacademy.com.

The most affordable and secure parking option at Palma de Mallorca airport!

Adventuring into ChinA’s equity mArket

Customer-friendliness, excellent service and unbeatable prices are the secrets of AIRPORT PARKING MALLORCA’S continued success.

there can be several advantages of investing in Chinese equities but investors should be aware of the risk involved. Mads Schierup Petersen Så bliv kunde i en bank, hvor alle er velkomne viAs a result of high economic growth in China and the prospect of an appreciation in the Chinese currency, investing in Chinese equities can offer several advantages. But no rose without a thorn. in general fluctuations in Chinese equity prices are considerably greater than fluctuations in us and european equity prices and this means that investments in China require a large risk appetite. in addition there is no guarantee that China will allow its currency to appreciate in the future, which also represents a risk for investors. Cooling impacts equities – When the financial crisis hit in autumn 2008, the Chinese authorities were quick to respond and introduced an extensive bailout package of then eur 450bn. this meant that China was able to maintain a high economic growth rate, says mads schierup Petersen, head of Business development at sydbank (schweiz( Ag.

the economic stimulus package was accompanied by a sharp rise in bank lending and even though this money was intended for investments in the real economy, part of it was spent on speculation in for instance the housing market and the equity market. this prompted sharp price increases in the Chinese equity market in early 2009 while equity indices in several other countries continued to close in the red. in recent months the Chinese authorities have sought to curb price developments in the housing market, for instance by means of bank lending restrictions and stricter requirements when buying property. – these measures have had a cooling effect on the economy and put a damper on the Chinese equity market even though economic growth remains above 8%, says mads schierup Petersen. Prospect of currency strengthening China officially abandoned its fixed-rate policy against the us dollar on 19 June 2010. the decision inspired hope among investors all over the world that China would allow the yuan (Cny) to strengthen against the dollar again. during the first weeks of China’s new exchange rate regime, investors noted a cautious Cny appreciation against usd but since then the cross has drifted back towards its starting point. however in terms of dkk the situation is quite different and there are large fluctuations in the exchange rate between dkk and Cny. one consequence of a yuan strengthening will be greater spending power

among the growing middle class. enterprises exposed to the Chinese domestic market may therefore grow more attractive in the years to come. on the other hand enterprises exposed to international markets may face difficulties due to for instance stronger exchange rates and prospects of a weak and uneven global economic recovery. Swings and roundabouts – the Chinese market offers potential to gain on the swings as well as the roundabouts in the years to come – in other words to profit from currency strengthening as well as rising equity prices. however the risk is substantial and therefore only investors with a large risk appetite should make investments in the Chinese market, remarks mads schierup Petersen, head of Business development at sydbank (schweiz) Ag. When seeking to invest in Chinese equities, the most obvious choice is to invest through an investment fund which possesses the expertise and experience in investing in Chinese equities and ensures risk diversification. the Chinese share market is very difficult to access but if you wish to give it a try, several Chinese enterprises are listed on the exchange in for instance hong kong. if you would like more details, you are welcome to contact mads schierup Petersen, head of Business development at sydbank (schweiz) Ag on tel + 41 71 227 81 23.

My Mallorca Gary Hardley BASED IN THE NORTH OF THE ISLAND, GARY HARDLEY IS VICE CHAIRMAN AND FUND-RAISER OF ESRA NORTH (ENGLISH SPEAKING RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION) AND “THE VOICE OF THE NORTH” ON ENGLISH RADIO MALLORCA. what originally brought you to Mallorca? We decided on Boxing Day 2001 that the following year was the time for us to move abroad; it was always something we wanted to do. After working in the entertainment hospitality industry for 17 years, when it comes to your son starting football at 8am every weekend and you’ve only been home a few hours, we knew it was time to change. We had been to Puerto Polenta when my wife Anna was pregnant with our youngest child Freddie. We never retuned to Mallorca until seven years later when we purchased our Tearooms in the Sun. what is your favourite place in Mallorca? By a mile, Deia, I don’t know why; I just do. Having driven through a handful of times and been for tapas there… but such a pretty little village. We now live in Ariany, the smallest municipality in Mallorca. Have you visited any other of the Balearic Islands? When both our boys were very young we went to Menorca for two weeks with some friends whom we have known for many years. To be honest these are probably the only people in the world I would ever go away with. I like to walk around where we are staying; can’t do with all that sitting in the sun all day long. I hate the sun. Why on earth do I live here in Mallorca when we’re roasting our little socks off in summer? Mad! what’s your favourite Mallorcan dish? I have two that I love to eat or cook: sopa mallorquin and of course the frito matanzas. Our youngest son Freddie, who has just turned 15, is the only guiri in the village who regularly participates in the matanzas (killing of the pigs). The locals watch with dismay. I like to eat it but don’t fancy the party piece beforehand. And drink? I only drink to be sociable! Just the one Mrs Wembley, between work and home. I have to go over 14 roundabouts (or around them if

I can) so it’s not worth drinking and driving, but when I don’t drive... boy! I like a nice gin and tonic to start with, loads of ice, and a fine bottle of Coto de Ibedo or Albarino, followed by a wee cortado (coffee) and Suau brandy. The boy done well! what is your attitude to social networking sites? I visit them a few times a day. They are a great way of getting messages across to people. For example, I am the vice chairman and fund-raiser of ESRA North (English Speaking Residents Association). We have just held our annual Winter Wonderland bazaar, raising money for the Club Esportivo Juan XXIII disabled school in Inca where my son Freddie is doing his work placement as a PE teacher. I used the sites to promote the event; daily I would change my status as this would show up on my friends’ list, which would make them look at my new details. I also used the sites to scour through friends’ pages looking for people in the entertainment industry here in Mallorca and managed to get great raffle prizes and also entertainment throughout the event. This year we increased our money raised by nearly 25 per cent on last year. I do think these sites work, if you work them. what animal do you most identify with? I have always had a love of horses. As a young lad we used to keep horses and went riding daily; that is one thing I do miss. But horses are so time-consuming. I have many other animals here on the country farm. We have Blau my donkey. He is a big baby; when he hears my car pull up to the drive he starts crying for me to go and see him. Then we have Billy our sheep (when I bought him at Sineu market around five years ago, the market stall-holder told me he was a goat, hence the name). If you go into his field, or more than often he gets into the garden, he charges at you so you have to run and get a stick. Stubborn or what? Then we have our ducks, which are no problem; five cats and four dogs.

Do you have any unfulfilled ambitions? I am starting to fulfil one of my ambitions at the moment. Over the previous month I have been “The Voice of the North” on English Radio Mallorca. I began my career as a DJ at the tender age of 14, and by the age of 18 I was compering large “Soul Weekenders” at Caister, the festival of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and Motown at Butlins, and the largest event was the Chelmsford Spectacular working with the best entertainers in the world. I always wanted to get into radio, but time never permitted it. I have been in regular contact with English Radio Mallorca over the last couple of years promoting ESRA North Events, but I received a call from Laura Penn asking if I would like to take part on a weekly basis. I am know in the studio every Saturday morning with the gang and loving every minute of it. The other is to be able to sing professionally. Most of you reading this have sung a song or two at a karaoke night, and may also have sung with bands. This is going to be my new year’s resolution (I haven’t got a choice anyway; Anna, my wife, bought me a package of singing lessons for our anniversary). what’s in your beside cabinet? Well, I have the norm: boxers and socks, along with a few different things. A good friend of mine who owns his own vending company here in Mallorca one night passed by me at the restaurant and gave me half a dozen boxes of Golden Root. “Mike, what’s that then?” I asked. “Herbal Viagra,” he said! Where do you want to be in five years? Still being young. I will still be working but would like more me time, not just earning money and not living. I would hope that English Radio Mallorca had expanded to operating the first 24-hour English-speaking radio here on the island and play a major role in that. Professionally singing with some of the greatest artists here in Mallorca. Having the time to get my horse and appreciate this beautiful island where we live.
