Individual Flair... with a Personal Touch When Melati Amiruddin moved to Mallorca in 1997 she could hardly have imagined that, 15 years later, her stylish “bespoke” boutique would have become a home away from home for three generations of clients. X-tra Moda in Puerto Andratx is an alluring fashion microcosm of Mallorcan society in general: a “melting pot of Europe”, says Melati, where shopping is like an event. “We offer wine, champagne and coffee. We make it comfortable for them. Even their husbands can have drink here while they sit in the sun and read magazines. For many of our clients, shopping is a very important part of their holidays. They don’t have the time for it back home.” One of the main keys to Melati’s success is her personal touch. “My clients start from 13 years old and I think the oldest is 89. I have three generations, mother, daughter and grandmother coming in, and they all find something because we do this individually. We don’t only choose and recommend

what suits them but also what they really feel comfortable in. Sometimes a young girl is even more conservative than her grandmother!” Many of Melati’s regular clients have been with her throughout those 15 years, originally at the Outlet boutique and more recently at X-tra Moda, visiting from all over Europe, several times a year. “There have always been English, Dutch, Germans and Austrians, and now the Scandinavians are coming more and more. Obviously the weather is the main attraction here, for everybody, but for me – from a business point of view – it’s great to live somewhere with such a diverse international clientele, speaking just about every language. (In addition to her native German, Dusseldorf-born Melati is fluent in French, Italian, Spanish and English.)

Fashion Origins

Melati had enjoyed two holidays on Mallorca before deciding to settle in

Port Andratx in 1997 with her architect husband and son. She opened the Outlet in September that year and X-tra-Moda in July 2009. A child model at just 12 months, she had always worked in the fashion business, for Italian and French companies, covering everything from production to distribution – so she was able to bring impeccable contacts in the industry to Puerto Andratx. “You have very few individual shops in the big cities. If you go to the main street, the most famous street, they all look the same. You go into one shop, you go into another, and no matter where you are they all look the same. Here we offer clients the possibility of having an individual shop, and they can be treated and dressed individually. I think that’s very important these days because if you want to be anonymous you can buy everything on the internet – but what happens there is it doesn’t necessarily fit.” X-tra Moda can dress teenage girls

and women with everything from lingerie to accessories and “high but comfortable” shoes, lines that range from “casual to extraordinary”, and all clothes sizes from UK 8 to 20 (German 32-46 or Spanish 38-50). “You’re always nicely dressed, not only for one season, and can have something special without having to buy a new disco dress every week.” Their collections are also excellent value. “If you need to have the feeling of knowing this is Dior then you pay the €3,000, but you can still feel good with something from here for less. Then it’s you with the dress and not the dress with you. You make the dress.” One of the most popular – and distinctive – collections at X-tra Moda is the extensive range of “pre-owned” Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Chanel handbags. Many are limited edition, up to seven or eight years old, and so rare even at the original designer boutiques that there are long waiting lists. “They are collector items. Some people do this with cars and watches: I’m doing it with handbags!”

Summer Style

According to Melati, bright candy colours are fashionable this season. “It’s a bit strange but I love this with beige and dark brown, like the Italians wear. You can also have soft ice-cream

colours, but to be honest what is ‘in fashion’ these days? Everything is ‘in fashion’… long, short, white.” Even animal prints. “Every year I think, this is enough now, but somebody starts again, like Dolce & Gabbana, and as soon as they bring out something with animal prints it’s in fashion again. “Having said that, it’s good that so many things are fashionable because you can choose for the person what really suits them. For me the style – the cut of something – is more important than the colour. When I’m choosing for my clients it’s not just fashion, fashion, fashion. It depends on their attitude. It’s not a matter of age: it’s a matter of attitude.”

Home Comforts

On a personal level, Melati lives in Port Andratx, has two dogs who accompany her almost everywhere – they are as well known in town as she is! – and, during the rare moments when she is not working, she loves dancing. “I did semi-professional dancing for six years. Wherever there’s music I love to dance. Salsa, merengue, rock and roll…” Her ideal day off is staying at

home and relaxing on the terrace or around the pool. “It’s boring, I know, but I love it.” Melati’s strong rapport with her clients has much to do with the fact she shares their outlook on life. “They love to live: they enjoy life.” And also their attraction to Port Andratx… “It’s a small place. Everybody knows everybody, and it’s like a family.”

It’s taken 10 years but TOMMY LEE JONES was finally persuaded to reprise his role as Agent K. When K’s life and the fate of the planet are at risk, Agent J (WILL SMITH) travels back in time to 1969 where he teams up with a young Agent K (JOSH BROLIN) to try to save his partner, the agency and the future of mankind. Also stars EMMA THOMPSON and ALICE EVE as the old and young versions of Agent O.

American Pie: The Reunion

Barnabas Collins… remember that name because, like the character, it could be around for a very long time. And who else can play this flawed persona who has as many humorous one-liners as Jack Sparrow? None other than JOHNNY DEPP. He has teamed up again with his old buddy TIM BURTON to resurrect life into this cult daytime horror soap, which ran on prime time US TV between 1966 and 1972. In 1752, the Collins family leave England to begin a new life in America. The son, Barnabas (JOHNNY DEPP), grows up to be a wealthy playboy in Collinsport, Maine, and is the master of Collinwood Manor. But he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (EVA GREEN), who just happens to be a witch. She turns him into a vampire and gets him buried alive. In 1972, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and returns to find his once-magnificent mansion in ruin. The manor is now occupied by dysfunctional descendants who include

Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (MICHELLE PFEIFFER), the family matriarch; her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (CHLOE MORETZ); her “ne’er-do-well” brother Roger Collins (JONNY LEE MILLER); and his “precocious” 10-year-old son David (GULLIVER McGRATH). Not only does Barnabas have to adapt to a new-found status, the 20th century, a kooky family who are all hiding dark and horrifying secrets, and a bourbon loving livein psychiatrist (HELENA BONHAM CARTER), who is supposed to be trying to sort out the family problems, but also the scorned lover from 200 years ago, Angelique Bouchard, who still curses his name. This goth-com will rake in big bucks and, with six years worth of scripts to fall back on, the franchise could last as long as the Pirates of the Caribbean chronicles have. Safe A second-rate cage fighter (JASON STATHAM) whose life was ruined by the Russian mafia witnesses a frightened 12-year-old Chinese girl (CATHERINE CHAN) being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife. He rescues her and finds out she is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads – who holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that they, the Russian mob and corrupt members of the NYPD, will kill for.

21 Jump Street All the gang are back but they are 13 years older when returning to East Great Falls for their high school reunion. This slice of the Pie franchise has no new recipe, however: even Stifler’s gone stale. TAKE ONE JAMES CAMERON will use footage he shot during his recent journey to the depths of the Pacific’s Mariana Trench for Avatar 2 and 3, which will focus on the oceans of Pandora. He revealed SAM WORTHINGTON and ZOE SALDANA had signed to reprise their roles as Jake and Neytiri, plus SIGOURNEY WEAVER will return as Dr. Grace Augustine even though she died in the original movie. He also said it took 60 weeks to convert Titanic to 3D and cost $18 million; and in China certain KATE WINSLETT scenes were censored as her “heaving bosom might prove too life-like for audiences”. An impressive cast has just started filming Hitchcock, which is based on the STEPHEN REBELLO book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho. It is a love story about one of the most influential filmmakers of the 20th century (ANTHONY HOPKINS) and his wife (HELEN MIRREN) during the making of the seminal movie Psycho. SCARLETT JOHANSSON plays Janet Leigh, JAMES D’ARCY is Anthony Perkins, JESSICA BIEL portrays Vera Miles and TONI COLLETTE is Hitchcock’s secretary. James Bond’s latest squeeze in Skyfall comes in the shape of TONIA SOTIROPOULOU. The 25-year-old Greek goddess originally auditioned for the major part of Sévérine but French beauty BERENICE MARHOLE got that role. The plot: 007’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, Bond must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. Joining DANIEL CRAIG are JUDY DENCH, RALPH FIENNES, JAVIER BARDEM, HELEN McCRORY, NAOMIE HARRIS and OLA RAPACE (father of NOOMI – the lead actress in the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo). JENNIFER LAWRENCE has shot up the popular film star chart faster than an arrow from her bow and we are gonna see a lot more of The Hunger Games warrior. She is currently filming Serena, playing the wife of a timber empire baron (BRADLEY COOPER of Hangover fame) who finds out she can’t have children – putting a strain on their marriage. TOBY JONES (TV announcer in The Hunger Games) is the local sheriff. After that is The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire, followed by the untitled X-Men: First Class sequel reprising her role as Raven/Mystique. She will not be seen on screen in anything new until after the summer

The annual horror show that is Eurovision was due to take place as we went to press. Everyone thought UK representative ENGELBERT HUMPERDINK would be the oldest competitor but a member of Russia’s groovy grannies,

There are rumours that the SMITHS are reforming but it’s just talk. The UK prime minister (whose name is not worth mentioning) claims he is a big fan of MORRISEY and would love to see them reform like the STONE ROSES and the HAPPY MONDAYS have. The group’s legendary guitarist JOHNNY MARR replied, “If this government stepped down I’ll reform the band. That’s a fair trade, isn’t it?”

Talking of the HAPPY MONDAYS, BEZ says he’s hung up his dancing shoes and will not be on stage when the band starts their reunion tour this month. “My performing days are over. Basically I’m too old. I’m incapable of doing the job. I’m carrying too many injuries.” But fans will still see him on stage as a compare and DJ.

IS ON HER WAY JESSIE J has been added to the evergrowing line-up for this year’s Mallorca Rocks. The singer, whose debut album sales doubled following the first episode of BBC show The Voice, will perform during the afternoon of 24 July before island-hopping for an evening gig at the Eden nightclub in Ibiza. She will also perform an exclusive live duet with TOM JONES for BBC Radio 2’s 2DAY at 7pm on 10 May which can be seen on the BBC TV Red Button or online at bbc.co.uk/radio2. The 24-yearold, who is currently working on a new album and has recorded a track with CEE LO GREEN, became the first British female to have six UK Top 10 hits from one album when LaserLight charted last month. BURANOVSKIYE BABUSHKI, is a few months older. He doesn’t even have the most stupid name – that goes to Austria’s TRACKSHITTAZ. Then there’s JEDWARD. Did you hear about the loony two? A recent bout of boredom saw them just hop on a plane to a typhoon-hit Tokyo without permission from their very unhappy management – so no pocket money for the next month! New Album round up

Rock legends GUNS N’ ROSES have announced they will play at the Iberostar Estadi in Palma on 22 July. This will be the last date of their European tour but in reality they should be called “AXL ROSE and Friends” as none of the other members who made them famous still play in the band. They will be supported by UK rockers THE DARKNESS.

Top of the pre-release charts in May was Little Broken Hearts, the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter NORAH JONES. The album’s flagship track, Happy Pills, was a single in March and Travelin’ On has recently been available as a download on her official site. Also, surprisingly, getting lots of preorders was Standing At the Sky’s Edge by RICHARD HAWLEY. This guitarist/singersongwriter was a founder member of ‘90s

Britpop band the LONGPIGS and later joined PULP. Leave Your Body Behind You, which was a single in April, is the lead track. ADAM LAMBERT will this summer front QUEEN at two gigs in London and his second album, Trespassing, landed in May. Top tracks are Better Than I Know Myself and Never Close Our Eyes. And lots of people had been eagerly waiting for the next offering from former GUNS N ROSES guitarist SLASH, Apocalyptic Love,

which features MYLES KENNEDY & THE CONSPIRATORS (out late in May). Other May releases included Strangeland by UK alternative rockers KEANE; Through The Night, the debut from the highly respected REN HARVIEU; Glee: The Music, The Graduation Album; TOM JONES with a cover version album Spirit In The Room; and Fall To Grace by the eccentric PALOMA FAITH.

First-time nominees Dominic West and Monica Dolan won BAFTAs (leading actor and supporting actress) for their performances as Fred and rose West in Appropriate Adult, and emily Watson was presented with the leading actress award for her role as Janet in the same drama. The supporting actor award went to Andrew Scott for his performance as Moriarty in Sherlock; while another first-time winner, Darren Boyd, received the male performance in a comedy programme award for Spy. Jennifer Saunders was presented with the female performance in a comedy programme award for the reprisal of her role as edina Monsoon in Absolutely Fabulous, for which she was last nominated in 1992.Graham norton made it two-in-arow for best entertainment performance, winning once again for The Graham norton Show. The situation comedy award was won by Mrs Brown’s Boys; Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle took home the BAFTA for comedy programme; the mini series award went to This Is England ’88; and Coronation Street received the soap and continuing drama award, its first BAFTA since 2004. Two weeks after collecting the writer award at the British Academy Television Craft Awards, Steven Moffat received the BAFTAs special award, presented in honour of Dennis Potter and recognising his outstanding career in television. One of the biggest ovations of the night was reserved for legendary Australian entertainer rolf Harris, who picked up a BAFTA fellowship, the highest accolade bestowed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, in recognition of his outstanding and exceptional contribution to television and the arts. Born on 7 August 1975 (star sign: Leo), in Benoni in the then Transvaal province of South Africa, Charlize was the only child of a mother (Gerda) of German descent and a father (Charles) of Occitan-French and Dutch ancestry. She grew up on her parents’ farm near Johannesburg

Career Path

After training as a ballet dancer, and winning a local modelling contest at 16, Charlize moved to Europe and the US in search of work and gained a job at the Joffrey Ballet in New York while also earning money as a photo model. An injured knee summarily ended her dancing career and at 18 her mother encouraged her to move to Los Angeles to try a career in the movie industry. While canvassing agents on Hollywood Boulevard – so the famous story goes – she went to a bank with a cheque for $500 she had received from her mother, and became angry with a teller who refused to cash it because it was outof-state. An agent watching the scene unfold gave her his card and advised her to improve her English. Her first role was as a young mother in a park in a B-film in 1995, non-speaking with three seconds of screen time. Her next role was in 2 Days in the Valley in (1996), which led to the role of Tina in The Wonders (1996). She went on to star in Devil’s Advocate (1997); Mighty Joe Young (1998); The Cider House Rules (1999); The Legend of Bagger Vance (2000) and The Italian Job (2003). Her career sky-rocketed after she won a best actress Academy Award for her performance in Monster (2003). “There were a lot of pros to winning the Oscar,” she recalled later, “but a lot of cons too. Suddenly it all became about transformation. Every movie I did after Monster was jumped upon as yet another transformation. Even when I only had dirt on my face, like in North Country (2005), it was transformation. “I do like the challenge of finding material that people don’t want to risk a lot of money on and that studios don’t necessarily jump to go, ‘Yeah! We want to tell that story.’ And how could I not after I had done something like Monster? Everybody wondered how a movie like that could be successful.” Away from the big screen, in 2004 she signed a deal with John Galiano and replaced Estonian model Tiiu Kuik as the spokeswoman in the J’adore advertisements by Christian Dior.

In 2003, Theron won the best actress Oscar for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster – the first African to win an Academy Award in a major acting category. One enthusiastic film critic described it as “one of the greatest performances in the history of the cinema”

Family Ties

Theron was 15 when he father died in 1991 after being shot by her mother. An alcoholic, he was alleged to have physically attacked his wife and threatened both her and Charlize when he was drunk. The shooting was considered to be self-defence and Gerda Theron ended up facing no charges. Later

But you try very hard to move on.” The actress has had relationships over the years with actor Craig Bierko, Third Eye Blind lead singer Stephan Jenkins and Irish actor Stuart Townsend, with whom she separated in 2010 after nine years together. In March this year it was announced she had adopted a son, Jackson (born November 2011).

Closely involved with women’s rights organisations and a strong supporter of animal rights (including PETA’s anti-fur campaign) and gay marriage equality, Theron has marched in pro-choice rallies (supporting the legalisation of abortion) and – through her Africa Outreach Project – has helped build a community-ride football (soccer) program in rural areas of South Africa. She once implored, “If you wouldn’t wear your dog, please don’t wear any fur… Fur isn’t necessary. It doesn’t make sense to me to let these animals suffer for fashion.”

Two days of vegetable soup or raw vegetable juices slims the tummy like nothing else but also causes even the most beautiful women to let off stinkers.

Botox in the cushions of your feet allows you to wear high heels comfortably but it also stops any feeling in them. This is fine until you find out you’ve stood on a four-inch safety pin which has been digging itself further into your foot all day. Queue a trip to A&E with the tearful glamour model who swears she’s never going near Botox again, for her feet at least. Plucking eye brows – takes years off, shapes the face, makes even the most perma-tanned celeb look great. I was in London getting the cast of this docu-soap ready to walk the red carpet. They weren’t really walking the red carpet: they were just pretending that they were. Between you and me I think they should remove the “docu” part of the title. I’m back with the family but John is still being strange. He flew to London to do a big pitch with his agency but refused to travel with me and wouldn’t meet when we were there. He said he was too busy with work but he’s never been too busy before.

Something’s definitely going on. John’s been distant, locking himself away, whispering into his phone and cutting conversations short when I walk in the room. I asked him what’s wrong but he hugged me and told me everything’s fine. I’ve been getting desperate so I’ve taken to following him around the house like a trained ninja. My Tai Chi teacher said I’d make a good ninja if I just stopped talking. The problem is he knows I’m spying on him because I was pressing my ear against his office today when Chubbles waddled up to me. I put my fingers to my lips and whispered, “Shhhhhhhhhh”. “Poo, poo, poo, wee, wee,” he chanted. “Shhhhhh,” I said, more urgently, my arms now outstretched, ready to scoop him up and use the doublesided tape on his mouth, when he nodded earnestly like he understood. “POO, POO, POO, POO, WEE, WEE,” he shouted at the top of his voice. In seconds John was at the door peering at us both. “What’s going on?” he said. I noticed he was sweating. “Nothing,” I answered casually, twisting my shoulders around in a relaxed manner and lifting my arms above my head to display how cool I was feeling. “Poo, poo.” Chubbles said, smiling. “Are you okay?” “Are you okay?” I retorted, narrowing my eyes. He hugged me, touched his forehead to mine and nodded. He looked tired, more tired than I’d ever seen him. The moment passed and he stood up, stepping back. “Were you standing outside the office?” he asked. “No. I mean yes but only because Chubbles was sticking his fingers in the lock. I think we should remove them. They’re dangerous. Look at his finger.” We both looked and Chubbles had his finger firmly wedged up his nose. I knew I could rely on him. “It must be painful,” I said, picking him up. “Let’s run it under water,” I said, walking off. “Bogey,” Chubbles said, producing a huge one and showing it to me as I heard the office door slam shut.

“What looks good with a bandage?” she said.

She flicks through the rails of pristine clothes as I think about the dry cleaning bill. Then she starts taking handfuls of dresses off the rack. I snatch everything away until she’s pulling dresses out of my hands.

“What?” “I wanna go out but the doctor said my foot’s infected so naw, I gotta wear this bandage.” “Riiiiiggggggght. Day or evening?” “Just dan the shops.” “Are there photographers?” “Dunno.” “Okay. You’re not going to get trousers on so go for a tea dress and those pink Miu Miu flats I left on the set.” “I’m wearing eels.” “Can you get heels on?” “Nah, I’ll just wear one.” “But you’ll be hobbling and...” “I ain’t goin out in flats.” “It might look a bit…” I ventured, hoping she’d get the message.

I was wondering who needs brains when you they can throw a tea dress on so quickly when I realised she hadn’t put the phone down. The last thing I heard were paparazzi shouting her name, cursing, and then a loud bang before the phone went dead. It might teach her that high heels are not always the best option but I doubt it.“It will show off your… figure, accentuating your assets, and play down your flaws.”

“Why?” he asked, moving the wallet from his desk to the draw. “Because…” I trailed off. “Now is not the time to ask for another handbag.” “I want us to spend time together,” I said. “It’s just not a good time,” he said, as his office phone and his mobile rang at the same time. “Sorry, could you give me a minute?” he said, distractedly. I went and got the duster and some cleaning products. Back at his desk he had finished the first call and was on his mobile so I started dusting with my favourite big pink feather duster. I thought it would look more seductive if I leaned over the desk but the stupid pile of paper got in the way and I slipped and the duster went straight up John’s nose. He started sneezing uncontrollably and I could hear the person on the other end getting fed up. Finally John put his hand over the phone.

“Why’s it here then luv?” She eyes me suspiciously. “I sometimes bring my own clothes to see if they’ll fit my clients but I can tell this is not for you.“ “It’s still got the labels in it.” “It’s new,” I say meekly as she grabs it and strides to the changing room.

As she turns around I see her huge bum stretching the beautiful fabric to breaking point.

“Bye.”

“Chubbles is with the nanny and I’m here to help.”

“That’s mine,” I say as I snatch it.

“I don’t get it?”

“I just put it on. It looks alright. It’ll look better with me eels. Bye.”

“What do you mean?”

I really don’t want her to have the Dolce number.

“Yuck,” I say. Everyone stares at me but Lucy is oblivious.

“Okay, send me pics if you’re stuck.”

“I’m off here. What can I do?”

Then her hand rests on the purple Dolce which I’ve lovingly placed back on the hanger.

“Well it might look a bit silly because one leg will be higher than the other.”

I knew she wasn’t going to listen. I swear she was born wearing sparkly high heels.

“Oh nobody, just business. An angry customer. You look nice. Off anywhere?”

“I wanna try it,” she says, yanking it back.

“What?”

“Flats will look stupid.”

“Who was that?” I asked, as I opened the door.

“No, this will be an unflattering shade,” I say as I yank another Prada number from her paws.

She comes out and everyone oooohs and ahhhhs as I start to feel sick.

“I think you should go for flats.”

“I can’t tell her-no-it’s not your position-NO.” I heard the phone slam.

“It looks well fit,” she says as she twirls. “It doesn’t fit properly across the bum,” I say bluntly. “My bum looks reem,” she says and everyone else agrees. What can I do? She’s won. I give her shoes and accessories and I let her go as I wonder about my ruined career.

13 June I tried talking to him. It went like this. “Have I done something wrong?” “Have you?” “No, but I feel like you’re freezing me out or you’re upset with me or something.” “Amy, I could never be upset with you,” he said as he wrapped his arms around me. Then before I could talk some more he changed the subject. “I like that dress,” he said, knowing that clothes are my weakness. I soon forgot about our conversation and told him about the new season and my work, and I thought we were getting somewhere but then he got another phone call and rushed into his office and shut the door. It feels like he’s fading away from me. Perhaps it’s something I’ve done. Maybe he’s upset that I haven’t been showing him enough attention. Or that I never ask about the business. Yes, that must be it. I’ve got no clients for the next few days so I’m going to get involved.

“Amy, this is really important. Please leave it?” he said, making me feel about 10 years old. Suddenly I felt ridiculous in my suit, begging for my husband’s time, so I ran out the room before he saw the tears.

Marco screeched when I saw him. “You look so thin, darling. Still going to Weight Watchers?” “I’ve not been hungry. I haven’t even wanted to shop.” “Ahhhhhh, darling, what’s wrong?” He felt my head and looked into my eyes. “Something’s wrong with John.” “What’s that brute done to you? I’ll give him a piece of my mind. I’ll tell him that I didn’t really like those blue shoes he wore to my birthday even though I said I did.” “I liked those blue…” I shook my head before continuing, “He’s been acting strange… locking himself away, avoiding me. 60 Years on the Throne One of the most momentous upheavals in European royal circles was, ironically, the catalyst for one of the longest and most stable royal reigns in history. When Edward VIII – the eldest son of King George V and uncle of the current monarch – decided to abdicate so he could marry US divorcee Wallis Simpson – the then Princess Elizabeth’s parents were crowned as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. At the time of her birth on 21 April 1926 (at 17 Bruton Street, Mayfair), Princess Elizabeth was third in line to the throne, after her uncle (at the time, Prince of Wales) and father (Duke of York) but in 1937 – after her parents’ coronation – she was first, followed by her younger sister Margaret.

On 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth received the news of her father’s death and her own accession to the throne, while staying in a remote part of Kenya. The tour was immediately abandoned and she flew back to Britain, where she was greeted as Queen by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and other officials at the airport. Her coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953: a solemn ceremony conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite rain, crowds of people viewed the procession along the route, and the ceremony was broadcast on radio around the world and, at the Queen’s request, on television for the first time.

Queen Elizabeth in Profile (All facts accurate as of 1 January 2012) 1. The Queen is the second longest-serving monarch. Apart from Victoria (63 years), only four other kings and queens in British history have reigned for 50 years or more: George III (59 years); Henry III (56 years); Edward III (50 years); James VI of Scotland (James I of England – 58 years) 2. The Queen’s official visits have ranged from the Cocos Islands (14 square kilometres with a population of 596) to The Peoples’ Republic of China (9.5 million square kilometres with a population of 1.34 billion). 11. Unusual live gifts given to the Queen on foreign tours include: two tortoises (Seychelles); a seven-year-old bull elephant called “Jumbo” (Cameroon); and two black beavers (Canada). 12. The Queen made an historic visit to the Republic of Ireland in May 2011, the first visit by a British monarch since Irish independence (King George V had visited in 1911). 13. The first football match the Queen attended was the 1953 FA Cup final. 14. She has launched 21 ships during her reign. 15. The Queen has sat for 129 portraits. 16. The first “Royal walkabout” took place during the visit by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to Australia and New Zealand in 1970. The practice was introduced to allow them to meet as many people as possible, not only officials and dignitaries.

In 2007 the official British Monarchy YouTube channel was unveiled, followed by a Royal Twitter site (2009), Flickr page (2010) and Facebook page (also 2010). 18. In an average year, the Queen will host more than 50,000 people at banquets, lunches, dinners, receptions and garden parties at Buckingham Palace. She also hosts more than 8,000 people each year at garden parties and investitures at Holyroodhouse, during Holyrood Week. 19. The Queen learnt to drive in 1945. 20. With the birth of Prince Andrew in 1960, the Queen became the first reigning sovereign to have a child since Queen Victoria (1857). 21. She has 30 godchildren. 22. The Queen has owned more than 30 corgis during her reign, starting with Susan – a present for her 18th birthday in 1944. Many of these have been direct descendants from Susan, and she currently has three corgi: Monty, Willow and Holly. 23. The Queen also introduced a new breed of dog known as the “dorgi” when one of her corgis was mated with a dachshund named Pipkin which belonged to Princess Margaret. 24. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have been married for 64 years – they were married on 20 November 1947 in Westminster Abbey. 25. The Queen’s racing colours are a purple body with gold braid, scarlet sleeves and black velvet cap with gold fringe.

Jubilee Projects Environment

Launched by The Woodlands Trust in February 2011, the Jubilee Woods Project will create a 460-acre (186-hectare) public wood in Leicestershire to celebrate the Jubilee and also aims to plant six million trees across the UK, creating hundreds of new woodlands. As part of this project, 60 “Diamond Woods” of at least 60 acres (24 hectares) each will be planted to mark each year of the Queen’s reign. It was January 2011. I had a two-month-old baby and no maternity pay. With our household income halved I needed to make some money, but with a breast-fed baby who wanted to feed every two hours I couldn’t see employers knocking down my door with job offers. Instead I researched ways to make money from home. I was surprised by what I could do from the comfort of my sofa. I sold what I considered to be junk on eBay; I got together with another new mum and we designed an iPhone app together. I also freelanced from home and I blogged. Smartphone apps are big business. Draw Something, a game where players guess what their opponent has drawn, was sold to its rival six weeks after it was launched for £120 million. It’s not alone: Angry Birds, a simple game in which you shoot, you guessed it, angry birds, has been downloaded 25 billion times. And here’s the great news… You don’t need to be a computer whizz to create one. All you need is a great idea.

The most popular online site for selling unwanted items is eBay. Millions of people visit the site daily, which means you can turn your junk into serious money. It’s estimated that most of us have at least five hundred euros worth of stuff that we don’t use, want or need in our homes. So why not make money from it?

It’s simple. Sort through all the stuff you don’t want: clothes, books, electronics toys, furniture. Photograph each item and remember: the better the photo, the bigger the profit. Then sign up to eBay and get selling.

Where’s the money

I mainly sold clothes and I made around six hundred euros over a couple of months. eBay charges an insertion fee for each item. However, if you have a low start value, you can often upload items for free. The better the picture and description the more money you’ll make. You can increase your profit by using clever search terms. For example, instead of describing your item as a “lady’s dress” you could say “Zara, short, pink, button dress, size 10”. eBay charges a percentage of the final sales value but the rest goes to you.

Pay varies from job to job. I found an agency through PeoplePerHour and worked with them directly on an ongoing basis. Recruiters usually suggest a higher and lower bid price and you’ll be expected to bid between the two prices. Some recruiters have a set price that they’ll pay for the entire job.

Chi Lounge Stylish and Soothing Setting by the Sea Strolling along the promenade at Son Matias last month it was clear to see that the hustle and bustle of the summer season had already begun but, for those wanting to escape the busy beach area, there is no better treat than casting anchor at Chi Lounge. Located just along from the water’s edge Chi Lounge cannot be missed: it stands out from the crowd with deep house music filling the air and a minimalistic white lounge… the ideal place to unwind and take in the exquisite view over the bay. The restaurant features luxurious settings, from stylish chandeliers to baby blue bean bag seating, creating expectations of a high standard of food and service – and we were not disappointed. Greeted gently by staff and shown to a table facing out of the restaurant, we had a fabulous view of the beach and waterfront. After studying the boats at sea our drinks were served promptly in glasses that tastefully accompanied the settings – the perfect way to begin studying the menu of Thai, sushi and Chinese cuisine. Tempted by the Thai aromas wafting through the lounge, and torn between sushi or finger food, we settled for crispy fish cakes with a sweet chilli dip to start. Again served promptly and displayed beautifully on a white rectangular plate to compliment the white lounge, our starter disappeared in seconds. Delicately biting into the lightly crisped cakes, without a hint of greasiness, the right balance of seafood flavours superbly complimented the sweet chill dip. Moving onwards, with the house rosé now partnering our main, served in large bowl glasses over ice, our yellow prawn curry with vegetables and red duck curry with vegetables were presented. The duck was on the bone and cooked to perfection, falling onto our forks and infusing our senses with aromatic aromas of lemongrass and galangal. The delicately spiced prawn dish was just as delicious, superbly cooked meat with complimenting vegetables still maintaining their crunchy centres. Chi Lounge hits the high notes for everyone, whether it be delicious food for an evening treat or afternoon drinks to wind down after a long week. This restaurant should definitely not be missed this summer.

Wines from a Mediaeval Kingdom It may be difficult to perceive of a major Spanish wine region that is as old as Rioja, senior to Ribera del Duero, but which is still battling to prove itself in spite having some of the best wines in the world. The region has made mistakes, the principal one being an earlier policy of opting for the tempranillo grape variety – because that is what they were using in Rioja. It didn’t work, but fortunately they had not got rid of all the native garnacha variety that was still enabling them to make the excellent rosados that kept Navarra on the international wine map. Just enough remained for the region’s rehabilitation as a serious producer of red wine. There are now many bodegas that only use the garnacha variety, and this fits into what is known as Project Garnacha, whereby bodegas all over Spain are turning to this grape as being the most suitable for the climate as well as the most ecofriendly. This report is not meant to be comprehensive, and there are well-known bodegas that are not featured. However, it is meant to be informative and to identify wines that you may not have previously heard of, with the value-for-money factor being significant throughout.

1) Inurrieta should be the antithesis of what

Navarra is really about. A huge modern bodega dominating a beautiful valley near the first century BC village of Falces, it has 200 hectares of vines and makes nine varieties, ranging from €4 to €29. 2) One of the most prestigious bodegas, founded

in 1939, Palacio de Sada’s wines have won impressive awards in Germany, Japan, France and the UK (International Wine Challenge, Decanter magazine). The small selection of wines is carefully made and very good value for money. The regular Garnacha is notable at €4; same price for the Rosado, and Crianza 2009 from old vines €6. 5) Principe de Viana is one of the Navarra bodegas whose wines you will see in many stores, and its Chardonnay (€5-€6) must be the best known of its type in Spain. Well-made wines, winners of many awards, competitively-priced and never disappoint… with Finca Albret as their top range. The Limited Edition wines are superbly priced at €6-€7. Local distributors: ebasa.com 6) Bodegas Pago de Larrainzar is a tiny, familyrun firm with only 14 hectares of vineyards but manages to make some of Navarra’s most notable wines. Not cheap at €25 for the Pago de Larrainzar, although money well spent, with awards such as gold medal for best Spanish wine in Russia and silver for best Spanish wine in Asia. 4) Pagos de Araiz is a relatively new winery

9) Nekeas is a reference point for Navarra wines,

and its name always appears on Best Navarra Wines lists. It was founded in 1992 as a cooperative and has one of the widest ranges of wines available, starting at €3 for the Chardonnay through to its excellent Izar de Nekeas (€15). 10) At Bodegas Viña Magaña, the range starts

with a more than passable red 6-grape blend, Dignus Crianza, at €5, up to a Gran Reserva 1982 at €50, but best value is the Calchetas 2006-2007, for €22. Three-Minute HIT The future of fitness could be heading for a short, sharp shock. Recent scientific research reveals that by doing just three minutes a week of High Intensity Training (HIT) you could significantly improve your health. Until now, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has Dee McMath advised that healthy adults do a minimum of five 30-minute sessions of moderate exercise every week. But now some scientists, medical experts and fitness professionals suggest that with less than an hour of vigorous exercise a month you can gain substantial health benefits. These groundbreaking findings, resulting in the “threeminute-a-week” fitness theory, have attracted much media coverage including a BBC documentary entitled “The Truth about Exercise”. Presenter Dr. Michael Mosley put the three-minute theory to the test – with interesting results.

Firstly, Mosley was pushed to his limits on a treadmill, under strictly controlled and closely monitored conditions to measure his VO2, or aerobic capacity. The VO2 max, or maximal uptake of oxygen, is an important factor in determining an athlete’s capacity to function during intense exercise. After this gruelling test, Mosley took on the four-week challenge of the daily three minutes on a static bike, which included two 20-second bouts of very vigorous peddling. Although the exertion was extreme during the 20-second sprints, Mosley boasted it was so short he could do his sessions without even changing out of his office suit – no sweat. In other words, a great programme for someone with a demanding, hectic lifestyle.

The crunch came when Mosley’s VO2 max was re-tested after the month’s training. Unfortunately, his aerobic endurance had not improved. He is apparently one of 20 per cent of the population whose genes dictate his athletic limitations, regardless of how much exercise he does. It is worth mentioning that his surprise at this result was because he felt so much better and the repeat test felt easier at the end of the month’s training. Nevertheless, in a similar study involving 1,000 people 15 per cent made huge improvements to their aerobic capacity. But, beyond the VO2 max test, there were more surprising results.

Even if, like Mosley, you are one of the 20 per cent socalled “non-responders” in terms of improved athletic capacity, be prepared for some unexpected major health benefits from this programme. After just one month following the daily routine of short bursts on the static bike, his previously high risk of becoming diabetic was considerably reduced. His insulin sensitivity had improved by a staggering 24 per cent. Mosley said, smiling that he was disappointed at not having Olympic gold potential but would continue with the programme, while admitting, “It won’t suit everyone because, although it is short, it is extremely intense.” He is delighted to have found a fitness programme which suits his lifestyle and lowers the threat of diabetes. If you are still not be convinced of the benefits of exercise in short bursts and have often wondered why so many women choose to spend hours in the gym, some inside information might be the motivation you need to get started.

A recent article in the UK’s Daily Mail newspaper, headed “The workouts that can really put a smile on your face”, revealed that four out of 10 women confess to having experienced “intense pleasure” when working out. Researchers are apparently dubbing these pleasant side-effects to certain exercises including yoga, running and swimming as “coregasmic”. The research referred to was published in the journal Sexual and Relationship Therapy and was carried out by Debby Herbenick, co-director of the Centre for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University. The static bike comes high on the list of fitness routines which bring a smile to many women’s faces. Of 370 women, 40 per cent admitted to having experienced sexual pleasure as a direct result of exercise – perhaps explaining why, for some, three minutes a day might just not be enough. Whether it’s for three minutes, 30 minutes or an hour, you are bound to feel better after doing an exercise routine that suits your needs and your fitness level. So, even if you turn out to be a “non-responder” on one level, you could ditch the dangers of diabetes and even find you smile more often – for all the right reasons.

Stunning Beach Setting for

“Enjoying the Silence” Nassau Beach Club kicked off the summer with their “Beats on Beach – Enjoy the Silence” beach party. Situated in Portixol, just to the east of Palma centre, Nassau is the closest beach club to the city, a perfect venue to hold such a bold and novel event. The scene was set with a luxurious five-course dinner which complemented the chilled, soft music flowing through the restaurant. As the sun began to set over the fantastic view of the cathedral, and courses from king scallops to black angus fillet steak flowed, the evening began to come alive with guests waiting to embark on the “silent beach party” experience.

Dinner was completed with cocktails, the dancers were welcomed to their podiums, and the background became silent… to an outsider perhaps a disorientating view, but for those on the dance floor everyone’s headphones were alive with club classics and the very best of dance music. A thoroughly enjoyable event that everyone should experience… from those who enjoy fine dining to those who love getting lost in their own world in one of the most exclusive places in the world.

Gary Wolstenholme was England’s most capped amateur before turning professional in 2008 at the unusually ripe age (for a golfer) of 48. Two years later, in just his second start on the European Senior Tour, he won the Casa Serena Open in the Czech Republic. Now he has secured his second Tour win, the Mallorca Open Senior, at Pula Golf. Wolstenholme’s final-round 69 gave him a two-stroke win over second-placed South African Chris Williams, Australia’s Mike Harwood and Englishman Paul Wesselingh in this opening event of the 2012 European Senior Tour season. “Everything just clicked into place. I came with no expectations so I cannot tell you how delighted I am… This is a top class venue and it’s been a great final round.”

The “Belgian bomber” – biggest hitter on the European Tour (longer even than Bubba Watson) – won his maiden title at the 2011 Volvo China Open, which earned him a place in that year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín on the Costa del Sol. He made it the semi-finals before losing on the 19th hole to eventual champion Ian Poulter, and was fourth and second at this year’s Volvo Golf Champions and Volvo China Open, respectively. Now he follows such luminaries as Arnold Palmer (inaugural event at Wentworth in 1964), Severiano Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els as the World Match Play champion. After beating Paul Lawrie in the morning semi-final, 29-year-old Colsaerts was taken to the final hole in the final by a dogged Graeme McDowell, who had edged out Spain’s Rafael Cabrera-Bello 2&1 in their semi-final. Other players in the field (played under a round-robin format over the first two days) were: Poulter, Martin Kaymer, Richard Finch, John Sender, Tom Lewis, Brand Snedeker, Thomas Björn, Branden Grace, Justin Rose, Robert Rock, Darren Clarke, Robert Karlsson, Jbe Kruger, Sergio García, Álvaro Quirós, Tetsuji Hiratsuka, Peter Hanson, Camilo Villegas, Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen.

Over 100 people enjoyed an evening of chilled music and Prosecco at the OttoMare restaurant, in the small Palma bay of Dársena de Can Barbará. Italian chef Antonio Ummarino created an array of mini-dishes for guests to try during the opening evening, including homemade seafood pasta, prawn cocktail with a special Otto sauce and insalata di riso (rice salad), “reflecting his passion for sourcing the freshest of local ingredients to create modern Mediterranean cuisine inspired by his Amalfi Coast homeland”.

Regal Opening of Harrys in Portals Nous

Over 350 residents and overseas visitors were welcomed by owners Gilly Carlsson, Marie Hulth, Tomas Hulth and Jan Bengtsson to the opening party for their new venue Harrys Bar & Restaurant. The opening was officially presided over by Her Royal Highness, Princess Birgitta of Sweden and the Mayor of Calvià, Manu Onieva, who congratulated the owners on taking a brave step by opening a new business during these difficult times. He added that renovation, re-energising and moving with the times were vital to the success of Calvià. Guests enjoyed an evening of entertainment organised by Jellyfish Events, with the four-piece jazz band Wonderbrass and singers Paul Martin and Liam Live. “We are overwhelmed by the response,” said Gilly Carlsson. “It has been an incredible night and we would like to thank everyone who came and for all the good wishes we have received. We can’t wait to welcome everyone over the coming weeks.” Harrys is a franchise of a successful chain of over 40 restaurants in Sweden and two in Thailand.
