Statistics, cautious optimism… and festive cheer

C

aution is always recommended when referring to statistics – especially those emanating from quasi-government sources – but there is cause for optimism from the latest tourism figures. According to the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce’s EGATUR (Encuesta de Gasto Turísico) survey, tourists spent 12.5 per cent more in July in the Balearics – the first increase since April 2009 and nearly four times the national average. The Balearics also generated the highest total tourist revenue in Spain in July (just under €1,800 million), confirming once again the region’s status as the premier summer holiday destination. Of course, as Mark Twain paraphrased in Chapters From My Autobiography, there are lies, damned lies and statistics, so not everyone in the industry has interpreted these figures as justification for opening the expensive cava – not quite yet anyway. One Mallorca hotel spokeswoman cautioned that, while it was good news that general revenue had increased, the price of a hotel room had remained the same, or even less, than the previous season – with discounts forced on the hotels as a result of the Icelandic volcanic eruptions. Another spokeswoman, for hotel chains, attributed the increase to traditional seasonal circumstances but added that the statistics did reflect a certain level of recuperation in European economies. In short, she told Diario de Mallorca, “One good month after six bad or very bad ones.” Bearing in mind that prospective holiday-makers are likely to continue seeing contained hotel prices as a positive development, we have sound reasons for assuming that figures for August will continue the upward trend. And hopefully into autumn. In the meantime, the party continues. As our sparkling Society coverage this issue shows, times might be difficult but that’s no reason to stay at home and brood. The red carpet was brought out for David Spade, Chris Rock, Kevin James and Adam Sandler at the Spanish premiere of their new film Grown Ups; music-loving holidaymakers and residents were able to enjoy concerts by such top stars as Dizzee Rascal and China Crisis (with Placebo and Pendulum performing on the island this month); world champions showed their style at a surf extravaganza; and art aficionados attended the glamorous launch of an exhibition of art works featuring Marilyn Monroe. Oh yes, and Michelle Obama and her younger daughter Sasha popped in for lunch with the royal family at the Marivent before returning to Washington after their Spanish holiday. Of course, one of the wonderful aspects of Mallorca’s varied round of social activities is the commitment to worthy causes, and last month there was the usual generous support for various events including a charity golf gala, a fund-raising football match and barbecue for a children’s hospital, and a “Best of Mallorca” anniversary celebration at a top beachside venue widely admired for its philanthropic activities. We hope you enjoy this issue, featuring a delectable Jennifer Aniston on the cover in an appropriately summery pose, and look forward to highlighting more positive news in October.

The 2011 Freelander 2 range benefits from a new 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine available with either 150PS or 190PS outputs and a new-look exterior, plus interior alterations to instrument dials and seating style options. The new engine is quieter and more efficient and offers more torque, improving engine response and providing more mid-range strength for towing. CO2 emissions are significantly reduced, with corresponding fuel economy benefits; and yet, despite reductions in consumption and emissions, the flagship 190PS Freelander SD4, out this month, achieves 60mph (100kph) in 8.7 seconds with an increased top speed of 118mph (190kph). In addition a 2WD derivative, the Freelander 2 eD4, is expected to be available from January 2011 – promising to be the most efficient Land Rover produced to date. landrover.com

celebrity profile

America’s

Good Girl Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston was on a promotional tour of Europe for her box office hit Along Came Polly and happy to draw comparisons with her real life. In the film the two main characters – Ben Stiller’s Reuben Feffer and Aniston’s Polly Prince – embark on various dates that go uproariously pear-shaped as a result of their conflicting personalities. This, revealed Aniston, was not far from reality. “The worst date I went on was with a guy who took me to a massage parlour. I never saw him again.”

revealed that Aniston (with estimated earnings of $30 million in the latest financial year) is now the fourth highest earning actress on the Forbes list, with Roberts ($22 million) sixth. (The list was topped by Sandra Bullock, with $61 million.)

So who is the real Jennifer Aniston? She was born Los Angeles on 11 February, to actor parents – of Greek origins on her father’s side (her only known major cosmetic surgery is a nose job) and Scottish and Italian descent on her mother’s. He godfather was actor Telly Savalas (Kojak), her father’s best friend.

At the time of that 2004 film, Aniston was married to Brad Pitt in a relationship the media liked to think was a rare Hollywood fairytale, but the harsh reality hit in 2005 when they divorced – and Angelina Jolie emerged as the evil husband-snatching witch.

As a child Aniston lived in Greece for a year with her family before they moved to New York City. She graduated from Manhattan’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, worked in off-Broadway productions and supported herself in various part-time jobs (including waitress and bike messenger) before moving to Los Angeles in 1989.

The saga remained headline news in the tabloids for years – it still fills pages – but Aniston came out of the whole affair with her reputation not only intact but enhanced. “Team Aniston” and “Team Jolie” T-shirts emerged on the market, and the former reportedly out-sold the former four-fold. In the intervening years, the general public continued to have warm and fond thoughts about Aniston as she endured romantic rollercoasters with such stars as Vince Vaughan and John Mayer. Julia Roberts, who featured on our August cover, was once known as “America’s Sweetheart”, but it is probably fair to say that Jennifer Aniston has now taken over the baton – even if she is just one and a half years younger than the star of Pretty Woman. Fans are desperate for her to find her Prince Charming, settle down, start a family (as Pitt and Jolie have – with such well-publicised proliferation) and live happily ever after. This outpouring of sentiment has also been reflected at the box office: last month it was

10

that women didn’t necessarily need men to be good mothers. “Times have changed and what is also amazing is that we do have so many options these days, as opposed to our parents’ days when you couldn’t have children because you had waited too long.”

After appearing in several poorly received TV shows, she considered giving up acting but Friends then came along. The producers had originally wanted her to audition for the part of Monica Geller but instead opted for Courteney Cox, and Aniston took the role of Rachel Green.

Not that the 41-year-old Anniston seems to have been brooding about her marital and family status. Perhaps inspired by her latest role in romantic comedy-drama The Switch, in which she plays a single female who uses a sperm donor to become pregnant, she told People magazine

By the 10th season of the show, she and her co-stars had become the highest paid TV actresses, with pay cheques of $1 million an episode; and she won an Emmy Award for “outstanding lead actress in a comedy series” in 2002. The series gained such stratospheric levels of international popularity that, even in Europe, women would go into their hairdressing salon and ask for a “Rachel” and not have to explain anything else! Aniston had made her film debut two years

celebrity Life & Livingprofile In the meantime, she has been spending the last year working on a new perfume – which was released at Harrods in London this summer. Originally known as “Lolavie by Jennifer Aniston”, though apparently now referred to simply as “Jennifer Aniston” in order to avoid any confusion with another similarly named perfume, the fragrance is part of her natural cosmetics brand. According to the Fragrantica website, she had outgrown her long-time favourites Miss Dior and Anais Anais, and had become attracted to “daytime scents with mild compositions reminiscent of nature, beach, morning freshness and spring morning flowers”. Lolavie is said to have been designed to reflect her personality: “sexy, clean, flowery, but not too flowery, intended for casual use”. In short, as our cover image this month shows to stunning effect, evoking the natural and the feminine. before Friends, in Leprechaun, which attracted negative reviews from the critics but was a commercial and cult success. Her first starring role was in Picture Perfect (1997) and she went on to appear in a diverse range of movies from the mega box office success of Bruce Almighty (alongside Jim Carrey) to the low-budget The Good Girl (as a sad, lonely and unglamorous small-town cashier). In addition to The Switch, her other 2010 film was The Bounty Hunter, an action-romantic

drama in which a bounty hunter is hired to retrieve his ex-wife (Aniston), who has skipped bail. This film boosted the amount grossed in Aniston’s movies to over $1 billion in the US and nearly $1.8 billion worldwide.

Meanwhile, she is also understood to be working on a fragrance for men – though it is not revealed if the inspiration comes from any particular beau. Stay tuned!

She has also just finished filming Just Go With It with Adam Sandler (due for release in February 2011); is expected to join the cast (Jamie Foxx, Colin Farrell, Jason Bateman and Charlie Day) of Horrible Bosses; and has signed up for Wanderlust. JONAH HEX (17 September in Spain; 24 September in the UK) This is yet another film adaptation of a best-selling comic book. Jonah Hex is an American post-Civil War, anti-hero, western film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film has already been released in the States with a lot of hype and some impressive reviews.

During the American Civil War, Jonah Hex (JOSH BROLIN) fought for the Confederacy until betraying his commanding officer, Quentin Turnbull (JOHN MALKOVICH), to save a hospital and killing Turnbull’s son (JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN) in the process. Turnbull seeks revenge and kills Hex’s wife and son and brands his initials in the face of Hex with a hot iron. Our hero then burns out the letters with a red-hot tomahawk, leaving him weak and helpless. He is found by Native Americans, who revive the dying man with their mystical powers. Given these powers, Jonah is still among the living but now has the ability to temporarily resurrect and communicate with the dead. He then becomes a bounty hunter with no remorse. He finds he is a wanted man but is given a chance to redeem himself by the US military, who make him an offer he can’t refuse – in exchange for his freedom from the warrants on his head, he must track down and stop a dangerous terrorist, a certain Quentin Turnbull who has plans to destroy Washington with a super weapon. Hex takes the job as it’s a chance to avenge his family’s death, then finds another reason as his former superior has kidnapped Lilah (MEGAN FOX), a prostitute he has bonded with while on his travels. The film has been described as an “epic adventure thriller about one man’s personal quest for redemption against the vast canvas of the battle between good and evil”. Also stars MICHAEL FASSBENDER and WILL ARNETT.

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT Life & Living U2’s rescheduled gig in Sevilla this month has had to be put back one day due to the planned general strike in Spain on 29 September. The concert will now take place at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday the 30th. THE ROLLING STONES have announced retire-

ment could be on the cards and they will embark on a final world tour next year. The band were last on the road from August 2005 to August 2007 for their Bigger Bang world tour, which is currently the highest-grossing concert series of all time, generating over $558 million in the process. It’s not known if they will continue recording but in the meantime RONNIE WOOD has a solo album out this month: Feel Like Playing is released on 27 September and guests include SLASH, FLEA, BILLY GIBBONS (ZZ TOP), KRIS KRISTOFFERSON, BOBBY WOMACK and Wood’s fellow SMALL FACES band-mate IAN McLAGAN.

Those “Nutty Boys” from MADNESS were up to

their old tricks when they locked CALVIN HARRIS in a backstage VIP loo at a festival last month just before he was due to go on stage. They were considering giving him a Jackass-style pooh cocktail but were advised not to. The Scottish DJ/singer was said not to be amused at their prank. They both appeared at the V Festival a couple of weeks later but everything was sorted out when the band kind of apologised to the singer during their set.

It looks like GIRLS ALOUD have decided to ditch NADINE COYLE from their future recording plans. A source said, “It’s been a painful decision for SARAH (HARDING), NICOLA (ROBERTS), KIMBERLEY (WALSH) and CHERYL (COLE) but they have decided that the future of GIRLS ALOUD lies without NADINE.” The girls seemed to drift apart after the Belfast babe moved to LA in 2006 to be with her boyfriend, the Desperate Housewives actor JESSE METCALFE. She has since opened a bar, Nadine’s Irish Mist, on the outskirts of LA and is also making a solo album.

THE KILLERS lead singer BRANDON FLOWERS

releases his long-awaited debut solo album Flamingo on 14 September. When news filtered out that the 29-year-old singer was making a solo album many thought it could be the beginning of the end for THE KILLERS as it’s a known fact that there were a lot of differences within the band – who had been either in the studio or on the road since their formation in 2002. But it seems like the break has smoothed things over, as Flowers explained: “At first I thought going solo would be this liberating thing, and now I’ve come to realise that it’s nice to have the guys there with you going through the experience. I have a renewed admiration for the band.” The album’s main tracks are Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Swallow It and the possible single Crossfire, but it is Magdalena that seems best on the ears.

Other album releases this month include: Stone Sour – Audio Secrecy (6th); Linkin Park – A Thousand Suns (13th); The Script – Science & Faith (13th); Robert Plant – Band Of Joy (13th); Interpol – Interpol (13th); Manic Street Preachers – Postcards From A Young Man (20th); Serj Tankian – Imperfect Harmonies (20th); Mark Ronson & The Business Intl –

Deceived By Sarah Smith with Kate Snell Sarah Smith was a happy and successful student, befriended over time by barman Robert Freegard in her local pub. In the confusing aftermath of an IRA bomb detonated close to her college, Freegard confessed his true identity to Sarah and two of her friends – he was an MI5 spy working undercover to investigate IRA cells in the area. He explained that because of their friendship and their knowledge of his true identity their lives, and those of their families, were in mortal danger, so it was essential to go into hiding. Freegard’s plan to steal thousands of pounds had begun. After several years of what had become a brainwashed life on the run suffering imprisonment and starvation, born of the fear Freegard had expertly instilled, Sarah’s two friends eventually saw the light and escaped. For Sarah it was harder to leave and Freegard’s mental manipulation kept her prisoner for a total of 10 years. She lived under multiple pseudonyms and worked menial jobs, with Freegard the only person she trusted. He had become her lifeline and her keeper, convincing her to con her own parents out of over £300,000 to keep both them and herself alive. When the police arrived at a house Sarah was cleaning, they explained that Freegard was not an MI5 agent after all; he was a con man and she was just one of many victims he had cleverly duped. Sarah tells her fascinating story with help from best-selling writer Kate Snell, who includes input from psychologists to help explain Freegard’s manipulative methods. The book also highlights the legal issues concerning such crimes, where ultimately victims are physically free to remove themselves from the situation, making it difficult to lay charges against a master manipulator.

Over eight million women stayed at home during the Second World War, but their personal stories are seldom heard. Historian Jennifer Purcell’s research, using new information from the Mass-Observation Archive, has brought to life the stories of six ordinary, yet very different, women adapting under the exceptional demands and uncertainties of war. Their diaries and letters have left a record of their everyday lives and private thoughts in an unrefined manner, stark in their emotion and honesty, which makes compelling reading. Nella Last, the archetypal housewife, is caught between the demands of her husband and her desire to help the war effort. While others scrape by, Cambridgeeducated, middle-class Natalie Tanner leads a leisured life, sneaking out to the cinema and discussing politics in town. Helen Mitchell constantly tries to escape the war and her domestic life in a draughty centuries-old home directly in the path of German bombs. Opinionated and patriotic Edie Rutherford uses the war as an opportunity to escape the restrictions of home and go out to work. Alice Bridges endures the horrors of the Blitz in Birmingham, but finds a new and exciting social life as she reports the war for Mass-Observation. And working-class Irene Grant, house-bound with arthritis for most of the war, struggles to keep her family fed and dreams of a better Britain. Reading these intensely moving and personal accounts, one can’t help but question how those of us in today’s rather cosseted society would actually cope under such extraordinary circumstances.

Domestic Soldiers: Six Women’s Lives in the Second World War By Jennifer Purcell

Reading Room In the Blink of an Eye By Hasso and Catherine Von Bredow Hasso Von Bedrow was a successful businessman, loving husband and active father of three, but in May 2000 his life changed forever. A massive stroke at the base of his brainstem left the 42-year-old a victim of a rare condition known as “Locked-in Syndrome”. With his mind as active as it had been before, he found himself imprisoned in a body totally paralysed and unable to speak. His wife Catherine became his main carer and they carefully devised a system of eye-blinking in order for Hasso to be able to communicate with, and through, her to the outside world. Both Hasso and Catherine tell their individual yet inextricable stories from their own perspectives, which as one would expect is sometimes harrowing, but for the most part surprisingly uplifting and inspirational. The incredible strength of their relationship and unconditional love cements them together through an unimaginable situation. Hasso’s contribution to the book was painstakingly made letter by letter via his coded blinking system with the help of state-of-the-art technology. He describes with honesty his feelings as he battles to cope in an incomprehensibly alien situation, while alongside his wife tells a heart-warming account of her complete and unwavering devotion to the man she loves unquestionably. Sadly, Hasso passed away from pneumonia in 2003, but his powerful story lives on as a lasting memorial to his courage, strength and determination. This unique book undoubtedly takes the reader on an emotional rollercoaster, but is ultimately a life-affirming, uplifting story of the love and achievements of a family faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges.

After being told by his doctor to get fit, reduce his cholesterol and give up smoking or face a heart attack in the next five to 10 years, 29-year-old Ben Miles has decided to set himself the challenge of a lifetime: to get as fit as a professional cyclist and raise funds to help abused and neglected children by cycling 5,769 kilometres (3,585 miles) across Europe in a mere six weeks. The ride will see him travelling from gibraltar to nordkapp in Norway throughout April and May 2011.

“Being the father of two young boys – and my kids are my ‘everything’ – i knew i had to make some serious life changes to see them grow up to be men,” says Ben. “I realised that not all kids are as lucky as mine to have a loving and caring family. There are thousands of children, across the whole of europe, suffering abuse and deprivation every day. I have developed my doctor’s advice to get myself fit and healthy to raise awareness, support and funds to help as many children as possible.”

A LIFETIME OF DISABLING CONDITIONS Ben is not a natural athlete: he was born with a severe uni-lateral cleft lip and palate and spent many of his childhood years in and out of hospital with operations to correct it. Then, at the age of 13, he was diagnosed with Perthes Disease, a degenerative condition affecting the hip joint, and spent the next few years in a waist-to-ankle cast and was either on crutches or in a wheelchair. This resulted in his left leg becoming shorter than his right and as a consequence Ben walks with a limp. in his early twenties the problem returned and he now has an artificial hip.

THE TRAINING “Cycling from gibraltar to nordkapp will be an incredible adventure,” says Ben, “but before i can do the trip i have had to begin to transform myself from an overweight smoker with an artificial hip into a professional level cyclist. I have another eight months, and that to me is the biggest challenge of them all. Losing weight was the least difficult; I just

“I love adventure and pushing the limits – plus I have a passionate commitment to help disadvantaged children” followed ‘food Optimising’, the healthy eating plan created by Slimming World, which was easy with the support of my mum, who originally created it. I lost several kilos in my first few weeks and my cholesterol dropped by 60 per cent in just five weeks. Now I have finally conquered my smoking habit too.” Dave Bladon, an endurance sports specialist at viva Sports in Palmanova, has designed Ben’s training programme. He is aiming to ride an amazing 200 kilometres every day, allowing only one day of rest every five or six days. When he has reached his optimum level of fitness, he plans to cycle from the Rock of gibraltar, which is the southern-most point in europe, to nordkapp in norway, the northernmost point, in less than six weeks. The route will take in Spain, france, england, Scotland, Sweden, Finland and Norway. “I love adventure and pushing the limits – plus i have a passionate commitment to help disadvantaged children by raising funds for children’s charities through The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz here in Mallorca and the nSPCC (The national Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) in the uK,” says Ben.

WHERE WILL THE FUNDS GO?

not one penny of the money raised will go anywhere except directly to the charities that Ben has nominated. The BenSmiles team are contributing their time and expertise to support Ben and his ambitious plan, and his own family are funding the trip and other expenses. One of the charity organisations which will benefit from Ben’s fundraising, The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz, will receive all of the money raised on Ben’s home training ground of Mallorca, and then a further five per cent of the money raised as he cycles across Europe. As well as supporting children in Mallorca’s seven orphanages, The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz have a current scheme which desperately needs support. Children who reach the age of 18 have to leave the orphanage, often with nowhere to go, and have only €200 a month to live on. The Halfway House project created by The Allen graham Charity gives them somewhere to live instead of sleeping on the street; it helps them to find work and find their feet as adults in society, offering them a springboard into a new life. The house is an ongoing project that needs completion. The five per cent of the

funds Ben raises across europe will go to help finish the house and support the charity with ongoing running expenses. Ben’s family have a long history of extremely successful fund-raising. Ben’s mother, Margaret Whittaker OBe, founded SMiLeS (Slimmers Making it a Little easier for Someone) in 1996 after her uK company, Slimming World, raised an amazing half a million pounds for Marie-Curie Cancer Care. To date it has raised over £2 million and helped several children’s charities. This year SMILES will be supporting the N.S.P.C.C. and Ben on his epic trip from Gibraltar to Norway. Ben is looking for supporters and sponsors to join him, so to find out more about the challenge, the route or how to get involved visit: bensmiles.com For more information on The Allen Graham Charity 4 Kidz and how you can make a difference contact Joan hobday (971 673 426) or andrew spence (629 640 333).

YOLANDA TALAVERA

“A child’s smile is priceless” fields and flowers as a background; we are so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful and natural backgrounds in Mallorca. In the client’s houses, I like to use antique furniture, armchairs and paintings within the shoots. Every session is unique. I limit my work to two or three sessions a week so I’m able to focus all my attention on each client. I do pre-session consultations to discuss clothing, locations and the look that the client wants to achieve in their portraits. This pre-planning is a very important step in achieving the best portrait session. My goal when I photograph is to make the viewer think. I want them to see beyond the image and see the soul of the person I’m photographing. I love co-

lour, clarity, eyes and personality. I strive to show that in every person I capture. The most effective way to photograph children is when they feel comfortable to be themselves. Sometimes I encourage them to play during the session and capture those moments and feelings. Other times I ask the mum or dad to tell them a story to get their attention; it all depends on the moment. For family photos I do minimal posing, preferring instead to capture genuine relationships that cannot be posed. The best thing about my job is when a sleepy little newborn offers a big and warm smile. It makes me so happy; it’s the best present for the day!

NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY

Yolanda Talavera is a contemporary portrait photographer based in Mallorca, specialising in newborns, babies, children and maternity. Her passion for art, beauty, colour and personality is evident in her work, and it is this imagination and creativity that makes every one of her pictures unique and special.

places that surprise me. In autumn, winter and spring I like to visit the area of the Tramuntana for its charm, splendid views and vegetation but in summer it is the various beaches on the island where I like to spend time with my daughter. I became a child photographer because I’m a mum. I discovered my passion for photography when I had my daughter, Tatiana. She is my biggest inspiration. I took her to a studio in Palma when she was three months old, but I didn’t like the style; the pictures were taken in 15 minutes, there were lots of corny props and they look like the same pictures as my daughter’s friend! I decided I would learn photography and do a completely different style.

I was born and raised in Paris with Spanish parents. After living in various Spanish cities on the mainland, I went away to study for one year in Florida. I returned to Madrid but after a few years I realised my heart was pulling me back to the sea. I came to Mallorca for a vacation in the summer of 2000 and subsequently moved here in March of 2001. I can honestly say I have been in love with Mallorca for the last nine years and yet there are still a lot of things that I have not done, like canoeing or scuba diving around the island. In summer I enjoy the free movies in Parc de la Mar or Casal Solleric and I usually go to art exhibitions in Foundation La Caixa, Joan Miro and La Misericordia. At the weekend I like to

walk in the old town of Palma to visit its amazing old squares and walk along those lovely narrow streets bursting with character; they always inspire me. I also love the stonework and Gaudi architecture. There are always new

I want my images to capture the actual moment. It needs to be true, honest and real. For me, studio photography is unnatural. I love light, and especially using natural light, so I do not use flash any more except for weddings. My approach to the photo shoot will be to have it either on location outdoors or in the client’s house with plenty of windows for light. I particularly like to do photo sessions in the typical Mallorcan countryside, using the stone,

What is your favourite subject to photograph? Newborns are my favourite subjects to photograph as I find them incredibly inspiring. Many people think there is not much to photograph at this age, but it is not true: there are many poses that show their tenderness and natural beauty and those early days should be captured and always remembered. The photographer has to have the ability to gently handle newborns as it really is the most difficult age to photograph, but being the mum of a three-year-old-girl has really helped me to feel confident and comfortable in handling these situations. What is the perfect age for newborn photography? Between two and 10 days of birth. Older newborns tend to sleep less, do not curl as easily, and they may also have spots and colic after that period. How long does one session take and what does it involve? It is not uncommon with a newborn that a session can last between three and four hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding and comforting. Skin is the best outfit for them as clothing looks unnatural. I also like to photograph the baby with the mum or dad for a classic shot. I can bring a background to the session but it is also possible to shoot outside now in summer, in a nice basket surrounded by flowers or green. For more information: Tel. Selected as an ambassador for the island’s tourist board, he enthuses about his love for Mallorca and is often photographed catching up with friends and family here and spending quality time with his long-term girlfriend Xisca Perello, also from Mallorca.

Undoubtedly the most well-known visitor, drawing worldwide media spotlight to Mallorca, was uS first lady Michelle Obama, accompanied by her youngest daughter Sasha. The short visit to take lunch with the Spanish royal family came at the end of a five-day private trip to the Spanish mainland. They were greeted on the steps of Marivent Palace by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía and their daughter-in-law Princess Letizia before retiring inside the royal family’s summer residence. When they emerged just a few hours later, taking with them a gift of seeds for the White House garden and Mallorcan handicrafts, the jet-setting mother and daughter climbed straight back on Air Force 2 for the flight home to Washington.

lOs rEyEs King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia make regular visits to the island, where they stay at the Marivent Palace. Since the King underwent surgery earlier this year to remove a lump from his lung he has cut back his official royal duties to allow for recuperation. Despite this, the couple have still appeared at a number of public engagements on the island during the royal family’s annual summer holiday in Mallorca, including the King’s favourite sailing event, the Copa del Rey, in which his son Prince Felipe was competing.

GROWN UPS Hollywood actors Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock and Kevin James spent time on the island in July for the Spanish premiere of their new movie Grown ups. The stars stayed at the Maricel Hotel in illetes, and were photographed enjoying themselves in the sea and jogging in the local area during their free time between promotional responsibilities. (Fellow co-star Rob Schneider was at the new York premiere but didn’t join them in Mallorca.)

HUGH GRANT The stereotypically english actor, Hugh grant made his first visit to Mallorca in July this year. Spotted in Puerto Portals enjoying dinner at a quayside restaurant with friends, he also reportedly made enquiries about available yachts in the island’s most prestigious port while he was here.

LOS PRINCIPES DE ASTURIAS Joining the King and Queen for a family holiday at Marivent Palace were Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia, along with their two young daughters. During their visit they made front-page news in Spain when society magazine Hola! printed what they claimed to be the first ever picture of a Spanish royal couple kissing on the lips. The tender embrace was captured as Princess Letizia greeted the Prince disembarking from his yacht at Real Club Nautico Palma during the Copa del Rey last month.

ML&S! teamed up with the Yacht Club Cala d’Or staff, club members and their guests last month to raise money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. After a round of friendly football matches, the staff were “robbed” of victory by the members’ team, who went home with the cup. Everyone then headed to the Yacht Club for a barbecue and a well-deserved drink or two. We all agreed that Sergio, the general manager, needed a haircut so after a very generous collection around the tables he was persuaded to shave off all his hair! Around €1,200 was raised for the hospital… a big thank you to everyone involved.

JAGUAR

XKR 75

A celebration of style and power By Mark McCafferty

The year 2010 marks yet another significant milestone along the illustrious Jaguar super highway. This month (September) Jaguar will be celebrating its 75th birthday in style. There will be no streamers, no cake, not even fireworks; instead Jaguar have created something slightly more dynamic – the XKR 75. This rather extravagant celebration is a limited run of only 75 vehicles, 20 of which will be available to customers in the UK. At first glance, there are some rather obvious transformations from the successful XKR… A new colour (Stratus Grey) with the option of additional graphics in the form of a silver stripe running down both sides of the car. Then there are the 20-inch Vortex forged alloy wheels, emphasised further by a reduced ride height of 10 millimetres. There are also a few other embellishments to the XKR skeleton, including a new front spoiler, side still extensions, rear diffuser and rear spoiler. The XKR 75 has managed to eclipse the XKR aesthetically. However, the fear was that these new embellishments would affect the perfect balance the XKR maintained mechanically. Mike Cross (the legendary Jaguar engineer) has developed a series of suspension upgrades designed not only to maintain the performance created by the XKR but also to build on it.

“The dexterity of the Jag is not compromised by its ability to produce savage bursts of acceleration at any given point” 54

55

PRESTIGE MOTORING Life & Living

The drive result is staggering – stiffer springs in the rear and the back suspensions have created an even tighter reign on body control, preventing this lovely new front splitter from diving head first into the tarmac at the slightest sign of turbulence. The XKR 75 glues itself to the road; not even the bumpiest of terrain can unsettle it. Okay, so far the XKR 75 is ticking all the right boxes: it looks great and you can’t seem to knock it off its path. Now onto its next test –

power. Jaguar have been historically infamous for installing unfeasibly large and aggressive engines into the most sophisticated of shells – similar to dressing BA Baracus in a Canali suit. The XKR already produces 503bhp and 461lb ft of torque from a monstrous 5.0 litre supercharged V8. Somehow the XKR 75 has increased performance on all levels – another 20bhp and a further 22lb ft of torque. Jaguar has just injected its well-dressed brute with steroids.

56

The resultant acceleration is enough to push you through the back of your seat and the announcement of this is anything but subtle – the sound that comes from the new sports exhaust is reminiscent of Tony Montana’s rapid-fire machine gun in Scarface. However, the dexterity of the Jag is not compromised by this ability to produce savage bursts of acceleration at any given point – it remains nimble and weightless throughout turns. The price to join in the birthday celebrations is €104,000 (£85,500), which is not unreasonable when compared to other cars in this market; but when compared to the XKR (which is over €12,500 less) it becomes slightly less appealing. However, when you take into consideration that Jaguar have built a car that has improved in all ways on the near-perfect XKR, combined with everything the XKR 75 represents, that additional €12,500 quickly becomes money well spent.

Price: €104,000 Power/torque: 523bhp/483lb ft Acceleration: 0-62mph (0100kph) in 4.4 seconds Top speed: 174mph (280kph) Fuel economy: 25.2mpg (Combined) CO2 emissions: 264g/km Verdict: It’s a shame there are only 75 of them. More information available at jaguar.com

Sweden’s unforgiving weather and unique geography have required its people to build manoeuverable, robust boats in order to travel and transport goods in often punishing conditions. From the time of viking longboats, through the merchant armadas of the 18th century to today’s luxury motor cruisers, the island of gotland, home to the J Craft shipyard, has been the hub of Swedish boat building. The J Craft Torpedo embodies the utilitarian Swedish boat building tradition of hand-shaped hulls, rock-solid construction and meticulous craftsmanship, but with an exterior finish that conjures up, in stark contrast, romantic visions of glamour and decadence of a bygone era on the Riviera. it was probably this very image that earned the J Craft Torpedo boats their selection as the sophisticated mode of transport for international celebrities and viP guests at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. So let’s start with that exquisite exterior. The eco-friendly, yet eye-catching, mahogany deck is lacquered 18 times for the perfect combination of gloss and strength. The cockpit is fitted with retro analogue dials and a steering wheel styled on a 1963

250 GTO Ferrari, giving it the seductive feel of a classic car… even the searchlight is a reproduction of a 1930s custom design for Bugatti. Every detail is meticulously hand-finished, from the stitching of the upholstery to the finish of the bow chocks, and it’s fair to say that this attention to detail has resulted in a stunningly beautiful craft. Below deck, the accommodation, with headroom of 1.84 metres, comprises a v berth with a hydraulic table in between to convert it to a double berth, a double cot bed and a compact head with shower. The interior design offers an impressive array of luxurious features throughout including fabrics from high-end Italian textile experts Loro Piana, enhanced with their Rain System treatment to protect against dirt and stains. The silver cutlery is designed by noneother than Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, the clock is by Panieri and a Bose sound system is an assurance of high quality. The air-conditioning, fridge and ice-maker are adequately supplied by a 3.5kW gene. Thanks to centuries of solid boat building artistry and passion born in the cold north, combined with today’s modern technology, eco-conscious production and exceptional aesthetic design, the J Craft offers a classic, sophisticated boating experience perfectly suited to the discerning boat owner enjoying the relaxing shores of the Mediterranean.

Refreshingly Innovative Restaurante Flor de Sal

Nestled in the cliffs at Camp de Mar on the south-west coast, Restaurante Flor de Sal set out a year ago to offer something new. Its chic, contemporary décor with muted tones of cream and brown complimented by chrome and glass, in contrast with the more classically styled hotel beneath which it sits, promises a stylish, modern culinary experience. “But can it live up to the impressive packaging?” I wondered. The hotel has been owned by the family of Flor de Sal’s general manager, Lara Cabau Wolf, for 21 years. After training to be a designer and living in London and New York she returned to Mallorca intent on transforming the restaurant in its idyllic setting. We were warmly welcomed by Lara and maitre d’ Yan Garayalde, who showed us to our table on the terrace, overlooking their pool area with sea views beyond. We were to be served a selection of dishes from the menu and Yan thoughtfully checked if we had any allergies or dietary requirements that the chef should consider. I’d already seen the menu on their website and had found myself salivating at the interesting and unusual combinations it features. Executive chef Jonay Hernández Sánchez

60

has assembled a menu with a Mediterranean base, enhanced with Asian twists and local influences brought with him from his home in the Canary Islands. He’s clearly a creative thinker and has a genuine passion for delivering interesting new dishes using high quality produce with a forward thinking consideration for sustainability and the environment. Flor de Sal works in collaboration with the campaign to save the Mediterranean bluefin tuna, whereby they’ve committed only to use tuna from sustainable sources, caught by specific techniques. They’ve sourced a local producer supplying organic Angus beef for exceptional quality and strong natural flavour. In addition Jonay is an expert when it comes to seaweed; an innovative ingredient which is gaining popularity in culinary circles thanks to

the recognition of its high nutritional content and sustainability as a renewable food source. With the difficult decision of which tempting dishes to choose already taken care of, Yan presented us with colourful, fruity strawberry cocktails served in short glasses filled with crushed ice and garnished with diced fresh strawberries and a sprig of mint, perfect for the oppressively humid evening. After placing your order an amuse bouche is served – which the chef changes each week. So whilst I enjoyed a light and airy strawberry and watermelon mousse my friend enthused over the fresh flavours of her tartare de salmon with scarlet shrimps. This was followed by bread, olive oil and, of course, Flor de Sal. Yan knowledgably explained about the different breads and the origins of the Avinent olive oil, locally produced in Consell, and about the history of Flor de Sal; the pure and natural salt collected from salt flats near Es Trenc. This type was flavoured with Sri Lankan spices, which worked well with the home-made raisin and pine nut bread. Our starters were served and Yan was on hand again to explain the dishes: beef carpaccio with Mallorquin sun-dried tomato pesto, rocket and parmesan, and a vegetarian dish of sea lettuce pasta with tomatoes, black olives and truffle oil. The presentation was immaculate and as we eagerly tucked in we found there was no need for words to express our pleasure; the looks on our faces said it all...simply delicious! For me this was particularly pleasing to find in the vegetarian dish, as so often vegetarian food appears something of an after-thought on

many menus, if it appears at all, with little attention paid to flavour. But this was a triumph for the chef. The beef carpaccio served as a beautifully light, yet flavoursome, starter, complimented by the fresh salad ingredients. Despite feeling we should pace ourselves at this early stage, each mouthful was a treat and we couldn’t help but devour it all. The main courses were just as pleasing. Wild sea bass was cooked in a delicate sauce of coconut milk and sweet kombu seaweed served with shitake mushrooms and delicious potatoes which had been smoked with bacon, along with a dish of canneloni filled with wakame seaweed and pine nuts served with an almond soup and perfectly light and crispy vegetable tempura. The portion sizes are just right at Flor de Sal. We were satisfied without being full, well able to consider the temptations of the dessert menu. We chose a dark chocolate truffle which was served with a sea lettuce sauce and coconut foam, and a chocolate brownie served with gofio ice cream, which we were told is a speciality from the Canaries, made from toasted cereals to give it a nutty flavour. While the chocolate truffle was a smooth and silky absolute chocolate heaven, I wasn’t entirely convinced that

the sea lettuce sauce was a perfect compliment; however, the confusing combination was intriguing and one I couldn’t help but keep tasting. The brownie offered a lighter chocolate option and the gofio ice cream worked well alongside it. The young team at Flor de Sal have a vibrant energy for being creative, trying something new and offering the best in all areas. The staff are knowledgeable about the food and wine they serve, talking with their own passion about the ingredients, why they’ve been chosen by the chef, where they’re sourced and how they’re cooked. Their energy and interest inspires the guests’ interest too, which completes a culinary experience. Attention to detail was second to none throughout the evening; even down to the designs created in the foam of our cappuccinos. Quite simply, Flor de Sal, hidden in its idyllic setting, was an absolute delight to discover and is an exciting prospect to revisit.

Tastes of mallorca Life & Living MENU DEL DÍA By Sarah Hughes

La Veranda

This month the ML&S! team decided to stick close to home in Santa Ponça and review a restaurant we not only recommend… but also choose to eat at every week.

Newly opened in May this year, La Veranda is a great little restaurant. Owners Christian and Barbara have worked hard to create a friendly and relaxing restaurant ambience in which diners can enjoy a fusion of French and Spanish cuisine. Situated on the main strip in Santa Ponça it has quickly become a favourite among locals who recognise the quality of food on offer, and enjoy the genuine warmth and hospitality of the staff and owners. Having eaten here many, many times since it has opened I could write a book on my favourite dishes. However for the purposes of this review I will focus firstly on their menu del día. At €12 per person, including wine, water or soft drink, bread, olives, a starter, a main and dessert or coffee, the value for money is staggering. Their menu del día changes every day but usually consists of a salad or soup to start, followed by a meat or fish option for main (except for Thursday, which is their “curry of your choice” day). Then traditional desserts such as tiramisu or pannacotta often make a welcome appearance on the menu. The creative twists they employ on their dishes is what sets La Veranda’s menu del día apart from other restaurants; traditional favourites are transformed into flavoursome dishes that are just that little bit different. The a la carte menu features some cracking house specialities such as sea bream, chicken or foie gras baked in parchment paper; and there are also traditional French specialities of steak tartare and rack of lamb, together with

frogs’ legs for the more adventurous diners. Today being an exceptionally hot day, we opt for the a la carte menu rather than go for the curry menu del día and choose an orange salad and salad “a La Veranda” to start with. I am immediately pleased with my choice; the beautifully presented orange salad is delicious. The

sweet oranges are perfectly complimented by a sprinkling of fresh basil and a light drizzle of balsamic reduction. The salad proves to be a small feast; the plate is filled with apricots, dates, walnuts and tomatoes, all topped with a generous helping of delicious cheese shavings. Cheese and wine are both a major ingredient in both Spanish and French cuisine so I shouldn’t have been surprised when my query regarding what cheese was used in the salad was answered by the entire wheel of cheese being brought to my table. (It was Don Bernardo by the way, an excellent, rich, nutty Manchego made

from sheep’s milk.) We move onto our mains and I can’t resist ordering my favourite dish off their menu. The cod is cooked to perfection with a slightly crisp coating and is served simply on a bed of lightly dressed leaves and drizzled with a sweet sauce. My partner follows recommendations from the lovely Nicole (arguably the best waitress on the island) and chooses the rack of lamb, which is tasty and tender, seasoned with rosemary and thyme and served with delicious creamy potato dauphinoise and asparagus and green beans wrapped in ham. The wine list, as you would expect from a French restaurant, boasts several excellent bottles of the French variety including a Chablis and a Sancerre as well as the ever-popular Spanish wines to compliment the dishes. Feeling very full I decide that unless I want to be completely useless for the rest of the day I’d better opt for a coffee rather than a dessert, but drawing from previous experience I would strongly recommend the pannacotta for those of you who have room! Verdict: Diverse menu using high-quality produce and unique flavours, all served in a happy, welcoming environment that’s sure to become a favourite with many. challenging test in a stunning setting it all sounded great to me until i discovered that my competitor this month was to be the notoriously difficult Son Quint golf course – it seemed as though the CeO wanted to get his own back … albeit indirectly. Son Quint is the third in a series of fantastic golf courses under the Arabella golf umbrella. Having played another Arabella course – Son Muntaner (June issue) – i had an inkling of what I was in store for. As I arrived at the first hole I instantly noticed how the course looked in fantastic condition: well-watered fairways, immaculate tees, beautiful vista points and the traditional gnarled olive trees – excellent attributes that I am increasingly coming to associate with the Arabella brand. Once i had hit my approach shot to the 355-metre first hole I became aware of the exquisite condition of the greens. My 70-metre sand wedge pitched five metres over the pin and spun back to within less than a metre. The putt was a slick one but I managed to secure birdie on the first hole – a very nice opening to a round of golf. Son Quint certainly have a winning formula in place for their greens. This is the only course i have played in Mallorca where the greens are not only very slick but they also hold – the perfect balance for any green.

This fantastic conditioning does not just end with the greens: the fairways are also in phenomenal condition. The grass is fertile and springy, ensuring each ball landing on the fairway is rewarded with a great lie for the approach. i was falling into the trap laid out by designer Ramón espinosa, being lulled into a false sense of security by the aesthetics of the course, i was about to be rudely awakened by its difficulty. After going 1-under for the first three holes I was feeling very happy with life. However, holes 4 and 5 brought

me back down to earth after i netted two bogeys back to back. The narrow fairways were punishing me; anything slightly off the mark and you will end up in sandy trouble, or blocked out by the trees. I clawed one back on the 6th – a short par-4 dog-leg right – but ended up 2-over for the front nine. I was playing some good golf – my approach shots had all been close – but my driving was slightly off the mark. Son Quint demands that you hit the fairway from the tee, a lesson I was learning the hard way. The hole of the day for me came on the 11th: a 354-metre par-4 with lots of trouble right (both water and trees) and a narrow tree line on the left. The view from the tee is breathtaking, being some 100 metres above the fairway, with panoramic views in all directions. However, this elevated tee plays havoc with gauging distance; it is best to play an iron or 3-wood off the tee to avoid running out of fairway. The back nine is a much tougher proposition than the front. There are more dog-legs and undulating fairways and a lot more hazards are in play. Not to mention the 12th – an ominous 196 meter par 3, over a large expanse of water. if there is one lesson to be learnt from

Wednesday / Sushi Night We expect you with a varied sushi station.

14 € p. p. / Selection of Sushi playing Son Quint it is to keep the driver in the bag until the par5s. All the trouble is off the tee – an accurate tee shot will always give you the chance for par or better. With a combination of breathtaking vista points, fantastic conditioning and a fair degree of difficulty it is plain to see that Son Quint is among the very top courses on the island. To add to the beautiful 18-hole course, Son Quint have just opened a ninehole par-3 course – The Executive Course. There is also an exquisite restaurant which serves a great mix of fusion Asian and Mexican cuisine – (the sushi rolls are very special). With three Arabella courses side by side in the luxurious Son vida area you really are spoilt for choice. Having played two out of the three Arabella courses (Son Muntaner and now Son Quint), it is noticeable that there are some obvious similarities in the condition (both were impeccable), the facilities (both were excellent) and the stunning views (well, they are both in the same area). However the challenge has been very different across the two. With this in mind my main objective now is to complete the trilogy… Son vida – watch out. vERDICT: Another beautiful Arabella course – would we expect anything less! Golf lesson 4

chipping This month we will look at my most favourite of lessons, chipping. Why? Because it is the part of the game where most golfers make the simplest of mistakes, from club selection to body position, and with some simple changes the golfer gets the quickest and greatest of results. A good chipper can hide a lot of other errors; a bad day with the long game can still be saved with some solid chipping. The biggest mistake by most with chipping tends to be the choice of club and not just the technique. Almost every day I meet golfers trying to play the simplest of chips using a sand wedge when by far the easiest choice would be a seven iron. The problem is that with a sand wedge the angle is greater and hence you need a bigger swing to reach the target. That is fine as long as you hit the ball as you would like to but if you mis-hit then the results can be disastrous: 20 metres too far or a fat shot barely a metre in front of you! If this sounds familiar then next time try using a seven iron. The advantage is that if you mis-hit it the result is the ball will roll along the ground but approximately the same distance as a well-hit shot. This sounds great but the problem is that you can’t always use a seven iron and sometimes you have to use sand wedge. The way to decide which club to use is to work out how much distance you need to fly the ball compared to how much you are able to roll the ball to the flag. You want to land the ball as soon as possible onto the front of the green, giving better judgement of the bounce, and then allow the ball to roll to the flag.

Derek McKenzie is director of golf at Robinson Club Cala Serena, where he also organises a busy golf academy, golf shop, golf trips, tournaments, etc. The club has a 24-bay driving range open to everyone, with no range fee; and a custom-built short game area. Lessons are available every day in English or German.

70

Champion’s style… Swedish star Henrik Stenson chipping during the Royal Trophy Asia versus Europe team tournament in Thailand in January.

A seven iron will fly one quarter in the air and then roll three quarters; a nine iron will fly halfway and roll the other half; and, finally, a sand wedge will fly three quarters in the air and then roll the other quarter. After choosing the club the technique is actually reasonably simple and almost identical to the putting technique talked about in the last issue. The only small differences are that the ball is placed in the middle of the stance and you grip farther down the grip to give more clubhead control. The ball being in the middle of the stance allows the clubhead to come automatically under the ball but it is important that the body weight is in the middle and not on the left side; weight on the left side will create a steeper angle which then makes the clubhead dig into the turf, reducing consistency. Now the movement is the same as with putting. You should keep your arms straight but relaxed, creating a triangle between the two arms and shoulders; and this triangle should at all times, during the swing, be kept a triangle. At no time should the wrists or elbows be bent as this will give you a bad connection. The last point now is to control the distance but this will be achieved over time and through practice now that you have learned to hit the ball consistently. So good luck next time on the course and may your best round be yet to come.

Antioxidants

to the rescue! The body is like an orchestra: when each individual instrument is playing well the sound is perfect but if one instrument, or part of the body, is out of tune, or not in good condition, it can sabotage the sound from the orchestra. So we need to fine-tune our bodies – spiritually, mentally and physically ensure that everything is performing optimally, from the big muscles and organs down to the tendons and joints. So how do we do this? We make sure our bodies are adequately protected. The body protects itself with a defence system of antioxidants; these are the peacemakers or the protection force. These antioxidants prevent our cells from being damaged and broken down, a process known as oxidisation; just as an apple will turn brown when cut in half and exposed to oxygen, so too does the inside of our body.

The importance of

Kegel exercises What is the pelvic floor? The pelvic floor has been described as a muscular funnel situated at the lower end of the pelvis. Pelvic floor muscles are often weakened during pregnancy and childbirth, and after menopause; many women during the course of their life will be affected by some sort of pelvic floor injury. You probably won’t think about your pelvic floor – until you experience an embarrassing urinary leakage when laughing, coughing, sneezing, jumping, skipping or running. Understanding the importance of the pelvic floor muscles and learning how to train them are of vital importance for women.

Kegel exercises • Named after Dr Arnold Kegel, the Kegel is the traditional exercise used to strengthen the pelvic floor. • To perform a Kegel, try to imagine engaging the same muscles that you would if attempting to stop urination. Kegels should be done daily and in different positions. Try performing Kegels sitting, lying down and standing.

A Palma-based personal trainer and sports nutritionist, Katie Handyside works with one of the world’s leading anti-ageing companies and is an expert on the latest nutritional technology and supplements.

• You can perform Kegels four ways. If you suffer from a prolapsed uterus or urinary incontinence, try to perform Kegels without engaging the abdominals. • Slow contractions: Contract the pelvic floor muscles by imagining you’re stopping the flow of urine for five seconds, and then relax for five seconds. Repeat five times. Eventually build up to five sets, holding the contraction for 10 seconds each time. • Quick contractions: Squeeze and release your pelvic floor muscles quickly. Try to complete one contraction per second for 10 seconds. • Kegels on the stability ball: The pelvic floor muscles can be hard to locate, so try to perform Kegels sitting on a stability ball, leaning slightly forward. This way you can feel your pelvic floor muscles against the ball. The tactile surface of the ball gives your brain feedback to help facilitate pelvic floor muscle contraction. • Sit on a stability ball: Lean slightly forward so you can feel your pelvic floor muscles on the ball. Perform any of the previous versions of the Kegel, but this time pull your pelvic floor muscles away from the stability ball, without moving any other part of your body.

Unless we counterbalance this breakdown with sufficient protection from antioxidants, over time it will result in diseases – or what is commonly referred to as inflammation. Physicians have long recognised inflammation as the culprit in diseases such as asthma and arthritis and many other painful “-itis” diseases. Almost overnight, medicine has redefined inflammation as the root of most chronic diseases. The latest findings suggest inflammation is the underlying cause of coronary heart disease, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and many cancers. Obesity and diabetes also have powerful undercurrents of inflammation. Factors that increase inflammation (free radical damage): • Pollution, urban life • Smoking and smoky environments • Sun exposure • Poor diet • Stress/anxiety/worry But there is a solution… a diet very high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are contained in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables. Try to include as many of these in variety in your diet as possible – at least seven servings a day. People who want to achieve optimum health, want to perform at optimum capacity or do not want to develop degenerative diseases need to be supplementing with extra antioxidant protection. This needs to be a scientifically composed formula – just as the musical instruments play together to create an orchestra, antioxidants also work synergistically or together in order to be absorbed into the body. But how do you know these antioxidants are being absorbed by the body? The Biophotonic scanner is award-winning technology, developed from Raman’s Nobel Prize-winning light technology, originally developed to analyse macular degeneration of the eye. The scanner is able to read the level of antioxidants in the tissue of the hand and give the individual level of the protection status of your body. This enables us to see if you are consuming adequate levels of antioxidants and nutrients. You can contact me to have your antioxidant therapy and analysis.

Skincare

By Sarah Hughes

elixir of youth?

There are a few things in life all women crave... the perfect pair of jeans, an “any occasion” little black dress... and normally right up there at the top of the list is an infallible skincare range.

Over the years i’ve gone from high-maintenance routines involving an army of products and applicators to the basics of a bit of facewash and a quick once over with a flannel. All I really want is a skincare routine that doesn’t require spending half an hour in the bathroom before i can crawl into bed but one that still leaves my skin radiant, protected, silky smooth and wrinkle free... is that too much to ask? Probably. Anyway, after rave reviews from our health and fitness expert Katie Handyside I decided to give NuSkin’s ageLOC skincare system a try. My new fabulously packaged products consist of a gentle cleanser and toner, serum, day moisturiser with SPF22 and night cream. The same as any beauty enthusiast, i like to read the product overview and can’t help but be a little surprised when I come across the disclaimer explaining that “ageLOC™ products will not make us immortal”. Surely that’s a given, you say? Well, I thought so too. However, upon reading about NuSkin’s incredible technology and how it has aggregated unique, proprietary ways to identify clusters of genes that are critical to the ageing process, with their products claiming to reactivate and support youth gene clusters, it is understandable that they feel the need to shed some light on all this anti-ageing business before consumers begin to complain that they have received a bottle of serum in the post and not the fountain of youth elixir from Death Becomes Her. claim: ageLOC® gentle Cleanse & Tone – cleanses, purifies, replenishes and hydrates skin, while preparing it to receive advanced antiageing ingredients, leaving your skin feeling soft, refreshed and youthful. rEaliTy: The pump action dispenses light foam, which is something new to me. However, I resist the urge to scrub until I get that squeaky clean feeling and it washes off my make-up easily without leaving my skin feeling dry. claim: ageLOC® future Serum – delivers the maximum concentration of ageLOC® blend to the skin. This powerful, clinicallytested formula reveals younger looking skin in eight ways, combining the benefits of many different anti-ageing products into one single product… ageLOC® Future Serum – for a dramatically younger looking you. rEaliTy: This is my favourite product in the range; it goes on lightly and absorbs immediately, leaving my skin comfortable and primed for the moisturiser. claim: ageLOC® Radiant Day SPf 22 – a lightweight, daily-use emulsion that hydrates the skin and fortifies against signs of ageing while skin-brightening ingredients deliver visibly brighter, more radiant skin. This silky smooth formula also protects against sun damage with SPf 22, stimulates youthful cell renewal for a smoother, softer texture and reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles. rEaliTy: The day cream is slightly heavier than the kind of day moisturisers I usually opt for. However, once applied I am pleasantly surprised by how quickly it absorbs into my skin without leaving any greasy residue like so many other moisturisers with SPF. claim: ageLOC® Transforming night – ultra-mild ingredients that mimic the skin’s own structure and work with its natural night-time renewal process so you wake to glowing, supple, youthful-looking skin. Specially formulated to reduce the look of fine lines, wrinkles and pores, this premium night cream reduces sensitivity while replenishing the skin’s natural moisture-binding ability for deep hydration. rEaliTy: While enduring the Mallorcan summer temperatures I’ve steered away from night creams as they end up sitting heavily on my skin. However, I was surprised at how light this night cream was, leaving my skin supple and not the least bit overloaded.

Overall Verdict After just a couple of days of using the system I genuinely noticed a visible difference in my skin: it has a softer, more dewy appearance. The products are obviously targeted at those wishing to resist the signs of ageing. However, there was also a definite difference in my skin tone and texture and a reduction of pore size. The real difference, however, came within a week or two of using the products when I noticed that my skin appeared tighter and my eyes less puffy in the mornings. No more bags? Hurrah! Now, back to the quest for the perfect jeans...

Facial massage:

the ultimate anti-ageing treatment

have you ever noticed that your face looks paler, puffier and more creased in the mornings? This can be caused by a number of factors but the biggest contributor is a nocturnal slowing down in your blood’s circulation. During the day, lack of exercise, poor nutrition and over-exposure to pollution also slow the drainage of lymph and flow of blood. To combat the effects of modern-day living boost your circulation with a combination of facial massage and exercise. A pinker glow is the obvious testament to improved blood flow. An increase in lymph activity is less visible, but you can assume that if you have healthy colouring in your face the lymph has been stimulated. A healthy fluid lymph system may not show its benefits immediately. However, over time it will result in a resilient immune system and a bright complexion. Half of the lymph nodes in the body are in the neck. Therefore, unblocking them has an immediate effect on the facial skin – so be sure not to miss this! Basics for fool-proof facial massage: • Always be sure to remove all traces of make-up, dirt and grime before massaging the face. • Facial massage should always be done with a light, feathery touch of fingers: never exert pressure on the face while massaging it. • Fingers should move in a swift, light but firm way in an upward and outward manner towards the temple. • Facial massage should not last beyond 20-25 minutes.

Kip McGrath Education Centre

The expert team at Mallorca’s Kip McGrath Education Centre offer extra tuition in a fun and friendly environment for children needing support in maths, English, Spanish and Catalan. They are preparing for a busy time as the island’s children return to school this month after the long summer holidays. hand to provide constructive support throughout the school year. The tuition they provide is based on the Kip McGrath system, originally started in Australia but now recognised worldwide. The tutoring programmes are designed to be enjoyable and to encourage a willingness to learn.

Since they set up the education centre twelve months ago, directors Julie Staley and Jay Hirons have seen a rapid growth in the number of students seeking their help. Reasons include preparing for exam re-takes, support with homework and new arrivals to the island needing Spanish or Catalan tuition to help them integrate more smoothly. The centre specialises in maintaining a high standard of English for children who attend Spanish schools. The qualified tutors at Kip McGrath are on

Each child is individually assessed in order to enable the tutors to tailor a programme specifically for them. During their time with the team there are regular assessments to track the child’s progress, identify any adaptations that are necessary for their learning needs and provide quality feedback for parents. Following on from the success that the centre has had with young students, they are now offering morning and evening classes for adults in English and Spanish; at beginner and intermediate levels, starting in October. Julie and Jay would like to extend an invitation to prospective students of all ages to visit the centre on their Open Day, Thursday 9 Septem-

ber from 10am. They will be happy to show you around and explain more about the Kip McGrath method. For more information please contact Julie Staley or Jay Hirons on Tel. 971 791 410. Harvest celebrations in Binissalem

Island bulletin Exhibition of “Animal Companions”

Binissalem celebrates the end of the grape harvest with activities and parades taking place during the two-week Festa des Vermada from Saturday 11 to Sunday 26 September. When harvesting has finished on the final Sunday, a rocket is fired as a signal for villagers and visitors from all over the island to follow a drummer and piper to a nearby field where they all join in a huge grape fight – something akin to La Tomatina, the famous tomato fight in Valencia. Just like La Tomatina, the true origins of this tradition have been lost over the years, but it continues to be celebrated purely because it’s a lot of fun!

CCA-Andratx is presenting an exhibition of collaborative paintings by New York artists Jennifer Coates, Holly Coulis, Ridley Howard and David Humphrey. Each painting was created with a different sequence of artists using the same division of labour, in which one artist painted the location while two others provided the protagonists. These representational works, painted during their shared time in the CCA’s studios, stage relationships between people, animals and others.

in person Life & Living Mandela or John Lennon. I love Lennon’s song Imagine; the words are beautiful. All this reading would inspire me to jump on the first boat home to do something positive for our society. What was the last film you saw? Shutter Island with Leonardo DiCaprio, I love his work, especially his portrayal of different characters, as they are so believable and his acting is timeless. I

was also interested and excited to see the performance of Mark Ruffalo, as it was documented that he had 800 auditions before he got his big break. I admire and love determined people who fight through their struggles, stay positive and achieve exactly what they want in life. What animal do you most identify with? I identify with dogs as they are fun, full of energy, loving and loyal.

Natalie Winsor will be performing at the Fiesta de la Rosa in aid of Respiralia (the cystic fibrosis charity in the Balearics). The event will be held on 30 September at Mood Beach. Visit moodbeach.com or call 971 676 456 for more information about the evening and to reserve tickets.

My Mallorca Natalie Winsor

Natalie Winsor, daughter of celebrity philanthropist Robert Winsor MBE, is an accomplished actress and singer based in London. Most recently she has held the lead role of Carmen Diaz in the West End production of Fame. Vicki McLeod caught up with this leading lady as she prepared for a very special performance here in Mallorca. What originally brought you to Mallorca? My father Robert lives here on the island with my stepmother María Jesús. I love coming out here to spend quality time with them and escaping the hustle and bustle of London life. What is your favourite place in Mallorca? Chilling at home in Santa Ponça with my beautiful family and energetic dogs. I also love going to Puerto Portals and popping into Wellies for a Wellies hamburger, chips and salad… which is so yummy… The port also brings back fond memories of my childhood and travelling the seas with my father and family. Have you visited any of the other Balearic islands? I’m going to visit Ibiza this September. I’ll be enjoying the performances of Faithless and David Guetta. Guetta’s collaboration with singer Kelly Rowland on tracks When Love Takes Over and Commander are awesome… can’t wait…. I love to be inspired and love their music; I’m really excited… yaaaaaaaaaaay! What is the most fascinating place you have visited around the world? India was absolutely beautiful; I visited and discovered the north and south of Goa. It was a culture shock initially, seeing so many little children and mothers begging for food

88

or money. I just wanted to tip out my suitcase and help everybody I came into contact with. I loved the clothing, fabrics, material and jewellery out there because they are so beautiful and perfectly made; and at such affordable prices it is hard to resist their creative work Have you seen women’s roles change in your industry? That’s a hard question to answer. There seems to be equal opportunity in the entertainment world for males and females, and since the recession the opportunity and chance of securing work has changed for everybody. I can see everybody is still hanging in there and ever-ready when the opportunity does arrive to sweep us of our feet. My Nan (a great and strong woman), who has just kicked cancer in the butt, taught me a great saying: “Natalie, when one door closes another opens so keep walking forward child.” Do you use any social networking sites? I absolutely love Facebook; it keeps me in contact with my family and friends all over the world. I also enjoy sharing pictures and happy memories, and it’s a great back up if anything ever gets lost, so thank you Facebook! What’s your favourite Mallorcan dish? María Jesús’ Spanish omelette… in fact, my stepmother’s cooking is so, so, SO tasty, full

stop. She can cook everything and anything under the sun. I get completely spoilt rotten with her cooking every single time I come home to Spain. I am an extremely lucky girl. And drink? I love fizzy drinks, especially an ice-cold diet coke. (Don’t think my dentist would agree though!) If you weren’t doing what you are doing, what would you have liked to have done for a living? I would love to be an angel flying all over the world, healing people from sickness, making them laugh and helping them make their dreams come true. Have you got any unfulfilled ambitions? I’ve no regrets and I plan on living for a very long time, so I am praying to do everything that helps me grow as a human being: be happy, healthy, make people laugh and meet more interesting and wise people What’s in your handbag? Wallet, make-up bag, passport (feeling a bit like Mary Poppins at the moment) hair-tie, car and house keys, Elle eau de toilette by YSL and Oscar Wilde biography. If you were on a desert island, what book would you like to have with you? I would spend my time reading a biography of somebody who has had a positive, lifechanging effect on our society, like Nelson
