Letter From Editor/Publisher This is time of year that we give thanks for all that we have been blessed with throughout the last twelve months. For many of us, this year has been a bit trying, filled with challenges that we may still be battling or challenges that are thankfully behind us. Whatever your situation is, one has to admit that it has made us all a little more humble. With that, it has brought many of us back to the basics, home cooked dinners, more family time or spending more time hanging out with friends in your own backyard. Just imagine one day without the outside interferences of technology, cell phones, email and television. Did you ever wonder how our parents and grandparents functioned without all of the technology we use on a daily basis? I did, so I asked my grandmother, a wise woman 96 years young and her answer brought tears to my eyes. She said that we all need to slow down and enjoy what is most important, meaningful conversation with our family and friends. Sharing that in the comfort of our home was the most important reason for living. Not our house, she restated, it was our home. Explaining in more detail she told me a story about how you can turn any house into a home as long as there is love. Remember the smell of Grandma’s home during the holidays? Joanna and Larry DeLuca the owners of DeLuca’s Fine Jewelry, are located in the downtown section of Longleaf Town Center, near Starkey Boulevard in Trinity. Joanna has been in the beauty industry for 29 years and also owns Style Makers Salon, conveniently located right next to the jewelry store. Larry, who had always owned his own businesses, appreciated Joanna’s sense of flair and style. The two got together, and the salon/ jewelry store combo was born! The idea began when Joanna and Larry went on a cruise. They bought some loose stones on an island and brought them back to the States. They were shocked when they found out how expensive it was to have them set. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
As many of you know, October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among American women. Approximately, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. While breast cancer can take years to develop, women rarely have symptoms in the early stages. However, if breast cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is 98%. Thus, proving early detection is the best protection.
Doctors highly recommend an annual mammogram as the exam of choice for early detection of breast cancer. A mammogram is simply an x-ray of the breast. There are two types of mammograms available, digital and analog. Both exams are performed in the same manner, but the similarities stop there. During an analog mammogram, the x-ray is captured on a sheet of film and ran through a film processor producing a fixed image. With analog mammogram films, the radiologist receives a fixed image and has no tools to increase clarity or manipulate the images as opposed to digital mammograms.

With digital mammography, the x-ray is captured by a computer processor and an image is produced on the radiologists work station. The digital image may also be manipulated by the radiologist utilizing multiple enhancement tools including: Magnification, changing gray-scale, and resolution giving a more accurate and comprehensive diagnosis. Because of the above advantages with digital mammograms, fewer patient callbacks will occur and faster results are possible. Digital mammography was approved by the FDA in 2003 and has several advantages over analog. Digital mammography is the newest and most advanced technology in breast imaging. The National Cancer Institute recommends mammograms as a screening tool once a year for every woman over 39 years of age. If you are at a higher risk for breast cancer, you should speak with your doctor about getting a mammogram sooner and more often. WHO BENEFITS FROM VAGINAL COSMETIC SURGERY
Any woman who has given vaginal knows that birth her vagina is not the same. Vaginal birth causes an incredible amount of stress and damage to the birth canal and surrounding tissue. It is especially difficult for white women. It is estimated at 65% of all white women that gave birth vaginally have some sort of pelvic dysfunction and pelvic trauma. It is also estimated that if the baby weighs greater than 8 pounds we had 5% to the 65%. And if the woman was subject to an episiotomy or forceps we would add 5% respectively for a total of another 10% risk to the pelvis. We estimate that 30% of Gerard Cappiello women who gave birth vaginally will also have rectal dysfunction and or fecal loss. With these statistics it is no MD, F.A.C.O.G, F.A.C.S. wonder that women seek help in restoring not only the vaginal function and anatomy but also their sexuality. The most common problem is pelvic floor dysfunction which can lead to urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapsed as well as many other types of problems. The vagina has become lax, bulging and gaping. The perineum which is the area between the vagina and the rectum has become smaller and therefore approximating the vagina to the rectum. This is a very important area where the bulbocavernosus muscles and the transverse perineal muscles are able to contract the vagina and therefore reduce its’ caliber. When these muscles are broken the vaginal axis is destroyed. Pain may occur because of the scar tissue. This is also known as vestibulitis which is very common and debilitating condition that affects many women. With aging, many changes occur as well, some may be very painful. Many times tears during childbirth may extend anteriorly. Of course bladder hernias or cystoceles along with hernias of the rectum called rectoceles are also important to correct in order to restore the vagina to a pre-delivery state. In summary, cosmetic surgery is for almost all women. The trauma to the pelvic structures is very real. The American College of OB/GYN has declared a new subspecialty called Female Pelvic Health and Pelvic Reconstruction. I have been performing pelvic reconstruction for over 20 years and I train other physicians to learn these new techniques in not only cosmetic surgery but also reconstructive surgery. Remember when Thanksgiving was not just a free pass to miss work, a day off of school or just to lay around and be lazy? When it was a day nothing else was on your agenda except to enjoy, relax, catch up and be thankful with your entire family. Where time stood still for that day to embrace loved ones. Waking up at 5am in the morning to put the Turkey in the oven, getting dressed in your Sunday best, the same excitement to each and every family member as they start to arrive. The smell of a homemade apple and pumpkin pie sitting on the kitchen counter. The sounds of laughter and children playing. The dining room table set with so many settings, you barely had elbow room. Those were the days when real childhood memories were made. It is sad to say, in today’s society and culture, many if not most of us have lost those “Old Time Holiday Traditions” due to the fast pace of the 20th century! This year take a moment to sit back, forget about all the surrounding stress in our everyday lives and try to bring back at least one (if not more) “Old Time Holiday Traditions” to your very own family. Take time at dinner to go around the table and have everyone tell their fondest memory that they can remember of Thanksgiving as a child. I guarantee, your family will laugh, smile and be Thankful for all they have and realize how much they have to cherish, not just on Thanksgiving, but through the year!

I do miss the whole family being together and all the cousins hanging out in a different room watching the games on TV and the adults being in another room catching up on what’s going on in their lives. Ultimate Girls’ Night Out
Fill A Heart is a very special organization that was founded in Trinity by resident Laura Cordiviola. The 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization provides soft, heart-shaped pillows to breast cancer patients who have undergone breast or underarm surgery. Laura has coordinated with Ruth Eckerd Hall to sponsor an Annual Girls’ Night out event every year in November. This year’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on Sat., Nov. 13th at Ruth Eckerd Hall and will feature a private party starting a 5 p.m. leading up to the show, Girls Night The Musical at 7:30 p.m.; a feel-good musical sure to be a good time. Fill A Heart is seeking sponsors to help cover the cost so that 100 breast cancer survivors can enjoy this perfect girls’ night out free of charge. See sponsorship information below.

In April of 2007, the first “Fill A Heart with Hope Day” began as family, friends and survivors came together to cut, sew and fill pillows. “I immediately noticed the personal connections people were making,” explains Laura.

The Fill A Heart group and volunteers have made literally 1000s of pillows to give to breast cancer patients for a little loving support, and also provides much-needed support and friendship, but it is also reaching out to breast cancer survivors to help them have a little fun. Trinity Business Association’s 2nd Annual Community Expo Proves to Be a Great Success
This year’s event was very well attended and featured an incredible selection of valued local TBA business members’ products & services! Guests enjoyed catered food from Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Lutz, Lonzalo’s Pizzeria and Ristorante in Longleaf and hors d’oeuvres from Fox Hollow Golf and Country Club. The night’s festivities also included informative presentations from featured spotlight businesses; Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Lutz, Five Star Auto Repair, Logo Dynamo and Xpertise Cruise Travel. TBA members were thrilled to be handing out all sorts of goodies to everyone who came by; too many freebies to count. Two of the best parts of the night were the silent auction and the cruise drawing. The silent auction was held to benefit

the TBA Scholarship Fund which gives $500 scholarships to at least four well deserving applicants. The great news is that over $870.00 was collected that night alone; enough for almost TWO more scholarships! And then there was the cruise drawing. How exciting it was for Billy Slater to be called on the phone and learn that he was the winner of the $1,000.00 cruise raffle; congratulations Billy! All of the event sponsors were greatly appreciated; the St. Petersburg Times, Trinity Area Neighborhood News and ABCO Graphics and Printing. The TBA business members also donated food and volunteered to make this event such a great success. Everyone worked hard so that TBA business members could connect with the community. Can’t wait to next year’s expo!
