For the Love of Family & Community Charles S. “Chuck” Philips, Attorney at Law “Abundantly blessed.” That’s the answer Charles S. “Chuck” Philips remits when asked to describe his life.
In the first year after his birth in Birmingham, Ala., Chuck’s parents moved their family to Clearwater, and Tampa Bay has remained his home ever since! Throughout his personal and professional life, Chuck has been afforded a myriad of opportunities to cultivate relationships by meeting and engaging with members of his community as a neighbor, a volunteer, a colleague, a counselor, and a friend. This is what he truly loves most about Trinity. “The people of this area are great. We have a wonderful community full of caring and compassionate people who continually strive to make Trinity a better place to live,” he explained. Ironically, “honest, caring and compassionate” are the same adjectives used to describe Chuck! Among the wonderful people in his life are his wife of 25 years, Diane, and their two daughters, Lindsay (20), a college student at Florida State University, and Savannah (16), a high school sophomore. Thanks to his own successful law practice, Chuck is afforded enough freedom and flexibility to spend sufficient time with each of his clients, as well as precious quality time with his beloved family and friends. He completed his law degree at Stetson College of Law in St. Petersburg in 1987, and he has since channeled his passion for helping others through his practice as a personal injury attorney. When he is not practicing law or participating in one of his service organizations, Chuck enjoys spending time with his family and friends, fishing, spinning, walking on the beach, and traveling. Dad’s Legacy Lives On at Pony Tails Farm
A little known rural haven of recreation, chocked full of barnyard fun, Pony Tails Farm in New Port Richey is affordable outdoor amusement for young & old alike! Pony Tails Farm was the brainchild of owners Bob & Judy Wunsch. They opened their hearts and their farm to children and families to experience a country lifestyle, complete with barnyard animals. From 1997-2010, Bob & Judy told people about Pony Tails Farm, and this word-of-mouth marketing kept their concept functional. Unfortunately, Bob died of congestive heart failure in 2010, and operations went dormant. That is, until their daughter, Brittany, and her boyfriend, Nic Wilson, decided to take the reins and revitalize the family farm to continue her parents’ legacy in August 2012.

“Our business was big when Bob and Judy were running it. They were advertising through word of mouth. We have now made the shift to social media. Facebook has been a huge part of our restart,” Brittany confided. “A lot of times people don’t know we are here, and they are happy when they find us!” This local, family-owned business offers an inexpensive, unique experience to its visitors with summer camps, pony rides, petting zoos, summer camps, birthday parties (at the farm or your location), lessons, trail rides and volunteer opportunities. Visitors are also welcome to check out the farm, free of charge! Brittany added, “We try to make every visit here special so that you leave with fond memories. We hear a lot of feedback that our farm is a great place for kids. It is great to see the joy and excitement on a child’s face when they meet an animal for the first time. You can see the spark in their eye and they always have a huge grin!” Although, the revitalization of Pony Tails Farm has been what Brittany describes as a “rollercoaster”, she, Judy and Nic are grateful for the community support they have received, which has been instrumental in their comeback. Their main goal is to keep things inexpensive for families by sponsoring low cost events and offering discounts. As their

family and Community Pasco County is a wonderful place to call home! I have always felt this way, but as I have become more involved in our community, it’s apparent how dedicated and focused so many of my friends and family are to supporting and protecting the present and future of our hometown. I had the honor of graduating from Leadership Pasco in May. Our motto was, “Class of 2014, Focused to Do More!” Together, we established dear friendships as we turned our attention to learning all about Pasco County. We created bonds with other business leaders, who volunteered their time and knowledge to pay it forward. We were all a big community family with a common goal to make a difference! Trinity/Odessa is growing at an astonishing rate, and the newly formed Trinity Odessa Chamber of Commerce has welcomed more than 175 businesses in just four short months. One night when Anthony Pesce’s son emerged from his bedroom wearing a fireman’s costume in place of pajamas and carrying a book, that moment of devine inspiration was captured! Pesce ran with the idea and created a children’s book series, The Adventures of the Magical Pajamas. Each book in the series features a story about a specific profession and includes a set of matching pajamas. Pesce explains, “The pajamas make going to bed fun like dressing up just to go to sleep. They also match those of the main character in the story, which brings the entire thing to life, making your child feel like they are part of the story!” This inspirational book series is intended to inspire kids to start dreaming about what they want to be when they get older, and gives them an opportunity to explore different occupations. Plus, Pesce hopes parents will revert back to the old habit of reading to their children before bed, as well as motivating children to be excited about reading again. Pesce, a native of New Port Richey, is married to Liza and they have two boys, Jacob (3) and Austin (3 mos).

The love of the family, the love of the person can heal. It heals the scars left by a larger society. A massive, powerful society. Maya Angelou, 1928-2014 Have I told you what a great family I have? What a great family into which I married? Wow! I am truly blessed! A few weeks ago, my cousin Kristy and I were talking over a beer, discussing our blessings, and she got somewhat emotional as she reflected on some of her fondest memories, many of which mirrored my own. We reminisced about the pets we loved, the places we went, and most especially our families. Those precious memories of special family gatherings included reunions, picnics, fishing, camping, and most especially, sharing big family meals. My father loved all family pastimes, but none more than fishing with my mother. The headstone on his grave even depicts my parents fishing on the river late at night. Night is evident by a dominant full moon etched perfectly on the stone, and an owl perched on a tree limb. (Mom’s favorite collectible is the wise old owl!) Unfortunately, not all of our memories are happy ones. Alcoholism, drug abuse, suicide, prison, rehab, cancer, divorce, child custody, broken relationships, alienation, loneliness, hopelessness… so many are not so happy in our family. Kristy said something that struck me that afternoon. She confessed that the times she spent with her cousins growing up were some of the happiest of her life. That was truly significant, because my dear cousin has experienced many challenges in life. Every family has their fair share of not-so-happy memories. Perhaps, this is the meaning behind “the powerful, massive society”, of which Maya Angelou so eloquently spoke. Regardless, I believe it’s imperative that we keep creating and capturing those wonderful family moments, whenever and wherever we can, because the love shared amongst family and true friends- and the memories generated thereof-will envelop, comfort and heal us when life’s difficulties inevitably arise. My cousins and I are planning our next family campout, and we’re all bringing our fishing poles!

honorary Governor of west Pasco County The 17th annual “Honorary Governor of West Pasco” competition, sponsored by the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, is a supreme fundraising effort for WPCC and the charities chosen by the two candidates campaigning for the “Governorship”. This year’s candidates are Paul Friedlander, representing Pasco Kids First; and Tina Farrell supporting her charity, Good Samaritan Clinic of Pasco. Pasco Kids First is a private, not-for-profit organization serving Pasco County for 25 years. This organization is dedicated to the prevention, assessment and treatment of victims of child abuse and neglect. They promote awareness of child abuse issues and provide leadership in the implementation of necessary services for children. Surprisingly, there were more than 5,800 abuse reports received last year in Pasco County alone. The Healthy Families Program of Pasco Kids First teaches parenting skills to new parents, with the goal to prevent child abuse and neglect, while improving self-sufficiency. Amazingly, 72% of at-risk families who are unemployed at enrollment are employed when they leave the program!
