When do you need a dictionary? • When you can’t tell the meaning of a word because it doesn’t look like an English word. • When you can’t use the rest of the words in the sentence to guess the meaning. • When you are writing and need to check the spelling of a word. • When you want to research new language on your own to say what you want to say!
How do you use a dictionary? • A bilingual dictionary (one with 2 languages) is divide in two. • One half gives Spanish words and the English translation. The other half does it the other way around – English words and the Spanish translation. • All the words are written in alphabetical order so you can find them more easily.
Can you place these letters in the order in which they are placed in the alphabet?
Z–A–H A–H–Z The example is easy because you know without really thinking that A and Z are at opposite ends of the alphabet.
If the group of letters is less clear e.g.
U–T–R then decide which letter comes first and say the alphabet to yourself from that point.
In this case -
R – S – T – U.
