POETRY FROM ADVERSITY take on studies in farm management and a Diploma in Freelance Writing. Learning after the accident was no mean feat for Mark who before the accident was excelling in his schooling at the Rockhampton Grammar School. “When I went to Gatton to study farm management, it was difficult, everyone was out partying, but I had to spend longer studying,” he said.
The saying “never judge a man until you’ve walked in his shoes for a day” is never more than what it is with Mark Williamson. Local businessman and local author has walked many paths since he was involved in a campdrafting accident at the age of 14. Mark was in a coma for six weeks and left paralysed down his right side. The accident brought with it some complications mainly the fact that he was a right hander and that kit played havoc with his learning abilities. But Mark overcame these obstacles, taught himself to write with his left hand, graduated high school and went on to
Mark, with the help of an uncle became interested in bush poetry and it became his therapy. During a six year stint of fruit picking in Victoria, Mark followed the bush poetry circuit, learning from other poets. At first it was reading poetry and then later, writing. He has a published book of poems and several other works on E-Kindle an online publishing site. Now mark is in the process, and not far from finishing his latest piece of writing, a book titled Ride to the Whip. This will be published on E-Kindle. Mark classifies himself as an adventure writer in the vein of Wilbur Smith. He tried his hand at romance writing, but this didn’t quite gel, especially when his characters were a little too prone to fighting. Mark’s ultimate goal is to make a living as a writer. His unique turn of phrase, indisputable sense of humour and his ability to forge onward despite serious obstacles sets him in good stead to achieve this goal. In the meantime, Mark will continue with his lawn mowing business and write when he can.
Milestones continue to mount up Every milestone that local 15 year old, Alexis Bishop makes is a milestone that her mother, Marie Maroney never thought she would reach. “Everytime she does something, it’s huge,” Marie says. Alexis suffers from Cri du Chat Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects one in 50,000. Those affected by the syndrome have different levels of physical and intellectual abilities. Some of the classic signs include small head, wide-spaced eyes and high palate. Alexis will soon have to have four teeth removed to correct some of the palate issues, Marie says there is also an option to have her chin line reconstructured, but this may a little too much for Alexis. “Alexis has an incredible sense of humour and takes immense joy in life,” Marie says. Marie says she is still saddened by some people’s reaction, but overall Alexis is well received. “It’s hard not to love her,” she said. Alexis’s journey is far from over, but there is little doubt that with the support she has been given from the community of Mount Morgan that she will continue to
flourish. Alexis walks and talks, two things which doctors never believed she would. She shares her life with two special dads, four sisters and a brother who thinks she’s amazing and a “nanna” who thinks she’s the “best thing since sliced bread”. Marie has been fundraising for the Cri du Chat Support Group of Australia and would like to thank people for supporting her during the last couple of years. Marie’s mother, Judy Maroney has given so much time and dedication throughout their fundraising journey. “Nothing has been too much for mum who struggles with back and leg problems, she’s amazing.” Marie would like to thank Curragh Mine who have also contributed through hosting a barbecue and UGL for their continued support. Marie is still fundraising selling tickets in the multidraw Continued on Page 3
MOUNT MORGAN MUSEUM Over the years the iconic business of the Ramm owned Mount Morgan Bi-Rite has been a place where locals could go to buy their supplies and enjoyed a friendly chat with Keith, John and Rhonda. Rhonda was the invaluable book keeper at the store and kept track of the stock and cash flow.

All three of these people were very helpful to the Museum ordering inks and advising the volunteers about their electrical problems and now they have closed. There will be another gap in the main street. Nobody likes change, especially when the memories of all the times glad and sad are fading. However, life goes on. We will never have another store like that which the Ramm family had for over 53 years. We thank them for all the love and hard work they lavished on our “historical gem”, the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. We wish them much success in their next phase of their lives. The Museum Committee would to thank Ann Gaskin for the Mount Morgan information taken from Trove. This will be ongoing research that Ann has offered to do for the museum. This great offer is very much appreciated. Many thanks also to Mount Morgan Arts and Crafts for their very kind donation of $200. This was put to good use by allowing us to buy a new vacuum. We purchased the vacuum cleaner from Mount Morgan BiRite before it closed, Thanks to Rhonda for holding on to the vacuum and her very generous discount.

Council’s vision to lift Mount Morgan CBD
Improving the aesthetic appeal of Mount Morgan’s CBD was raised as a major priority for local business traders and residents during the 2014/15 Community Conversation meetings. Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow, Councillor Cherie Rutherford and General Managers from two of Council’s departments visited the CBD to look at ways to beautify the historical town, revive the centre gardens in Morgan Street and improve road signage for locals and visitors as an immediate action. “While we will create a plan to improve Morgan Street over time, right now we are looking at what immediate improvements can be made, with minimal fuss but maximum benefit,” Mayor Strelow said. “Replanting the gardens in the main street will be one of our initial steps to tidy up the CBD to give it an instant lift. “Council will further consult with business traders on how they want to further see Morgan Street redesigned to become an attractive space. It is important that the redesign is achievable. “We will also focus on simple traffic solutions such as new line marking on the roads, and as we see more visitors stopping overnight in caravans we will provide better signage and a designated parking area near the School of Arts building.”
IT’S BEEN A DRY JULY & ABOUT TO GET DRIER Slim Dusty sang about when the “rain tumbled down in July”, but for the Mount Morgan Mechanical team, July has been a very dry month, totally contradicting the famous Aussie balladeer. On this occasion “dry” has a different meaning. Peter De Haas, his daughter, Abbie and employee Travis Williams have decided to refrain from drinking the amber fluid, or any other fluid containing alcohol in support of adults living with cancer. Just under three weeks in, July is also turning into one of the longest months this year for Peter, who classifies himself as a “seasoned” drinker. “Usually after work, we like to have a cold one, but that’s off limits. That’s when you enjoy it the most,” he said. Mount Morgan Mechanical is located diagonally across from the Railway Hotel and to date the siren call of glasses clinking and phish of beer streaming into a glass has not lured Peter, Abbie and Travis away from their goal of going dry for the entire month of July and raising money for a very worthy cause. “The money we raise will be going to Townsville Hospital Cancer Centre as it is the only oncology unit north of Brisbane,” Peter said. Peter has fundraising tins at Crafty Nanna Craft Store , Railway Hotel and Mount Morgan Mechanical or you can go online and make a donation. Alternatively, you can go to the Mount Morgan Mechanical Facebook page and follow the links to make a donation.
Mayor Strelow says money has been allocated in the draft 2015/16 budget to see these improvements delivered this year.
Wife Jo, while not “going dry” in July is really proud of Peter and how he’s abstaining and the fact that for the first time in a long time, she’s not the designated driver.
“These will be the beginning touches of a revitalised main street so locals and visitors alike can enjoy the charm of this historically rich town,” she said.
In the meantime, if your vehicle is in need of a service, Peter will make a $5.00 donation to the fundraising for every service he carries out in the month of July.
MORNING TEA TO CELEBRATE SENIORS’ WEEK Mount Morgan’s Pensioners’ League will hold a morning tea to help celebrate Seniors’ Week. The morning gets under way at 9.30a.m The morning tea will be held in the Mount Morgan School of Arts on 17 August and will musical items, multidraw raffle, money tree and other competitions. Trevor and Keith Stock will perform the musical items. The morning tea was funded by Council of the Aging (COTA). If you would like to come along, contact Pat Hare on 4938 1986. Bookings are essential.
Peter and his mechanical crew are looking forward to the first of August when they will celebrate the end of the fundraising and the end of the abstinence. Peter is urging residents to pack a barbecue lunch and join him, his wife Jo, Abbie and Travis at the Big Dam to celebrate their achievement and to enjoy some good old-fashioned camaraderie.
Gazebo Consultation has closed
More than 190 surveys were received in the recent survey to determine which gazebo Mount Morgan residents preferred as an option for Morgan Street. 196 surveys received (106 online and 90 paper based) with 92% preferring option 1 and 8% preferring option 2. Whilst comments were not officially on the survey some left comments such as: More tables and chairs, (Gazebo) with tables and chairs and please don’t listen to the negatives, it will be great for everyone.

FAVOURITE RECIPES Do you have a favourite recipe? If so send it to the Mount Morgan Argus (with a photo) and it will be included in the paper. The Chicken Cabbage Stir Fry below is quick and easy to make as well as very tasty.
CHICKEN CABBAGE STIR FRY
Ingredients 3 chicken breast halves 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 3 cups green cabbage, shredded 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1⁄2 teaspoon ground ginger 1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder 1⁄2 cup water 1 tablespoon soy sauce
Directions 1. Cut chicken breasts into strips. 2. Heat oil in a frying pan. 3. Add chicken strips and stir fry over medium-high heat, turning constantly until done. 4. Add cabbage and sauté 2 minutes until cabbage is crisp-tender. 5. Mix cornstarch and seasonings; add water and soy sauce, and mix until smooth. 6. Stir sauce into chicken/cabbage mixture. 7. Cook until sauce has thickened and chicken is coated, about 1 minute. 8. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. (You can add onions and red peppers to taste - it tastes even better with these two ingredients added)
MMPAD UPDATE Let me introduce myself. My name is Jackie Murray and I am one of the new Project Officers at Mount Morgan Promotion and Development (MMPAD). I have recently completed the Bachelor of Professional Communication degree through CQUniversity. Key areas of study included public relations, communication, digital media and journalism. I am currently working at MMPAD two days per week, Mondays and Tuesdays, and look forward to contributing to the team. Whilst here, I have been asked to complete a number of projects to promote Mount Morgan. The first task on my to-do list is to complete the visitor information signage upgrade at a number of key locations including the Mount Morgan Dam, Anzac Park, School of Arts, Frank Golding Lookout, Mount Morgan Mine entrance and more. The signage will collectively present a remarkable story about Mount Morgan’s history. Each sign will talk about the history of the site the tourist is visiting – this will allow them to learn about, experience and enjoy the area. Furthermore, each sign will incorporate a QR code and NFC tag which a visitor can scan with their mobile device, allowing them to watch an interview with a local about their involvement with the site. For example, a visitor viewing the Mount Morgan Mine site from one of Mount Morgan’s lookouts could hear what it was like working in the Open Cut by a former employee of the Mine. Angeliza Wanstall, the other Project Officer at MMPAD, has been overseeing the beautification of the Rail Museum and Tourist Information Centre. This week, Rockhampton Regional Council staff will be working at the complex upgrading the gardens. Before and after photos will be taken to share with the locals in the next edition of the Argus and via our Facebook page. The first stage of the overhaul involves removing all unwanted plants and installing fresh soil, mulch and a drip irrigation system. The next stage will be to clean the pathways, plant new plants and build a rock wall along the front underneath the billboard. Angeliza said the volunteer groundsmen have been doing an exceptional job keeping the complex neat and tidy, with a number of tourists commenting on how wonderful the place looks!

Angeliza also said more volunteers were needed to work in the kiosk. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, or helping out in any way, please give MMPAD a call on (07) 4938 2312 or email mmpad@ bigpond.com.

Mount Morgan’s Golden Mount Festival Association Inc is set to celebrate the “Magic of Movies” in 2016 and the theme promises to be an exciting one. The Association recently launched its themed logo (the cost of production was donated by a Mount Morgan local who wishes to remain anonymous) and planning is under way for an action and entertainment packed event. President, Eve-lyn Rogers said if everything went to plan, there will even be a few surprises along the way. She said the Association recently received funding from the Rockhampton Regional Council for the development of a Business and Marketing Plan by Krista Hauritz who has worked with several large festivals and events throughout Queensland. More on this plan in future editions of the Mount Morgan Argus.

PRIDE IN YOUR TOWN This edition we acknowledge the life of a very remarkable gentleman who played such an important role in the history of Mount Morgan, namely, Benjamin Gilmore Patterson B.E., M.A.I.M.M. He was born in 1881 and died in 1955. He was buried in the local Cemetery. He was fondly called “Banjo” (but never to his face), generally known as just “B.G.” A first impression was that he was a very formidable figure, height over 6 ft. and solid physical build, but looks were deceiving as he was a gentle man, very quiet, learned and extremely generous. He did his schooling at the Rockhampton Boys’ Grammar School then later graduated from Sydney University as a Mining Engineer. He joined Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company in 1904 as a Mining Engineer and Statistician. His friends at that time were, Walter Hall (Walter and Eliza Hall Trust), Richard Casey (later Governor General of Australia), James Malcolm Newman (leader in the Mining Industry), - all became men of distinction in later life. B.G. Patterson’s army service in World War 1 was with the 5th and 15th Light Horse Brigade training in Brisbane. He obtained the rank of Captain, but due to a severe back injury he did not serve overseas. After the closure of the mine in 1927, he accepted a teaching position with the Ipswich Boys’ Grammar School remaining there for 7 years. He was greatly respected by teachers and students who he often took to Sydney or the Barrier Reef on excursions. It is reported his geography room was a distinct asset to the school. In 1930 Adam Boyd contacted Patterson whom he knew had the greatest knowledge of ore reserves at the mine to see if it was viable to re-open. The result we know is a matter of history. B.G. Patterson returned to Mount
Morgan Limited in 1934 and remained on staff till his sudden death from a heart attack. Although his greatest love was the history of Mount Morgan and writing books on the subject, he also achieved great heights in other areas, one, the Masonic Lodge and the other the Boy Scouts movement. He was the founder of the Masonic “Andrew Wood Smith Sovereign Chapter” and he actively served and gained high recognition in the Freemasonry Lodge. His other interest was the Boy Scouts movement forming the first Mount Morgan Group in 1910. After many changes of affiliations of the Scout Movement B.G Patterson resigned from the movement in 1939 and took his Group and formed the St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church” Blue Boy Scouts group”. This group disbanded in 1957 two years after Patterson’s Death. B.G. was a devoted member of St. Enoch’s Presbyterian Church. Further to all his good work, I have never viewed neater hand writing and photo albums kept in such perfection works of art. Benjamin Gilmore Remarkable life.

Heated Pool Update. This is an extract from the Morning Bulletin dated 7 July 2015. Council Agenda. “Heating Mount Morgan Pool” “In late 2010 council commissioned an engineering investigation into the Mount Morgan heated pool (also known as Mount Morgan lap pool) with regards to the structure. Discussions around access to a heated facility in Mount Morgan have continued with a petition being submitted to Council by the Community. This report addresses the provision of a heated water body.” Therefore we wait and see if this report is favourable for our heated pool to be restored and back in operation.

PAMPERED PAMPERED PETS
Meet Jacko, this week’s Pampered Pet.
9
Jacko is a brown and white Jack Russell, aged 11 years. Jacko belongs to Judith Curtis. Jacko came to Judith when he was just 4 months old. His first family wanted a female Jack Russell, so Judith took him home to be with her family and her Jack Russell, Barney. Barney has passed and Jacko is just so spoilt. He loves going for rides in the car, visiting family so he can get spoilt with rump steak and lamb on the menu. His favourite activity is chasing lizards in the garden, not that he has caught any - they are too smart and quick for him. He hates going to the vet, and gets the shakes as he is aware of exactly where he is. Jacko is loved and spoilt by many. He is one of the lucky dogs who went to a very good home. If you have a Pampered Pet, please drop a photo and a short story telling us why you think your pet is pampered, to the Mount Morgan Railway Station or email it to mmpad@bigpond.com.

by Trish & Greg Mathers 0400 591 504 Many people believe that wildlife carers have some sort of government funding or assistance; however this is not the case. All of the costs involved in caring for sick, injured and orphaned native animals come directly out of the pocket of the wildlife carer, aside from the occasional donation. Apart from buying food (it costs around $2,000 to raise just one Joey), special milk formula is almost $50 per kilo, supplements, medicines, vitamins, carry boxes, cages, pouches, aviaries, enclosures, heat pads etc., we still have to cover fuel and vet costs as well. Wildlife caring can be a costly experience, both in time and money, so we were extremely grateful last week to receive a generous donation from the 'Order of the Eastern Star', Mount Morgan.

one perfect day.....
The Order of the Eastern Star does a marvelous job in supporting the community, and is currently providing much-needed support for drought-affected farmers. Without these wonderful community organizations, life would certainly be a lot tougher for many. Pictured above is Alan Todd (Order of the Eastern Star) handing Trish Mathers a cheque towards the caring for local wildlife. 'Barney”, pictured aboe right, is a Barn Owl that was rescued from the roof guttering recently at the Mount Morgan High School, where he was caught by his leg. He was (and still is) very weak from starvation and dehydration (who knows how long he was there before he was noticed?), but he is gaining strength every day. He has to be force fed as he is too weak to feed himself, and is so frail, he can barely stand, yet we are hoping for a full recovery for this majestic bird. Who could not love an owl? Barn Owls are nocturnal birds with flat heart-shaped faces

UNSTOPPABLE FORCE
Photos by William Howie - Mount Morgan vs Rockhampton’s Boars at Rugby Park
Mount Morgan’s Lorikeets are proving to be an unstoppable force as they continue to rack up victories on their march to the Grand Final. Since their last home game, the Lorikeets have notched up two wins and two forfeit wins. Both University and Boars forfeited their games. On Saturday, 4 July, the Lorikeets took on Dawson Valley at Rugby Park trouncing the opposition 31-10. Try scorers for this game were: Adam McDermott (two tries) and Sam Toby, Neville Blake and Nathan O’Brien (one try each). Scott Toby kicked two conversions and Curtly Toby, one in this convincing win. Man of the Match was John Gray. On Saturday, 11 July the Lorikeets took on the Boars at Jardine Park. Try scorers were Quentin Kirk, Adam McDermott and Dylan Forbes with conversions from Jerry Barney and Nathan O’Brien contributing to the 19-nil win. Quentin Kirk was named Man of the Match. The Lorikeets have a bye on 18 July, following which they will front Biloela in Biloela. The Lorikeets play their next home game on 8 August at Newman Oval. This will be the last home game for the year. The game starts at 3 p.m. The team will then have away games on 15, 22 and 29 August. On 5 and 12 September the Semi Finals will be played at Rugby Park and Grand Final will be played on 19 September at Rugby Park.
