2020 FESTIVAL CANCELLED

LOCAL AND REGIONAL EVENTS CANCELLED AS NATIONWIDE EFFORTS ARE INCREASED TO CONTAIN CORONAVIRUS As we head into the cooler months excitement normally builds for the array of events that are held within the region. However, 2020 will be the year that goes down in history as event after popular event is cancelled due to the outbreak of covid-19 and a Federal Government ban on non-essential gatherings of over 500 people.

and will welcome the festival back in 2021.

Events to fall by the wayside 2020 include the Golden Mount Festival, the Rockhampton Agricultural Show, and the 7 Rocky River Run.

In response to Covid-19, Rockhampton Regional Council has cancelled all public programs and events (large or small) in all Council facilities for the remainder of March and April, and all large council-run public events in May.

The Golden Mount Festival is cancelled for this year, while the Mount Morgan Rodeo will be postponed until later in the year. Mount Morgan Rodeo Association President, Mrs Barbara Gould said a new date would be announced as soon as it is decided, but at this rate it will be later in the year. Golden Mount Festival Association President Mr Graeme Meade said it was with great sadness and disappointment that the 2020 had to be cancelled. “However, the safety of our community and visitors is of the utmost importance to us, we feel that especially with our elderly residents this is the best decision to make,” he said. He said market stall holders will have their money returned and any sponsorship money received will also be returned. “We would like to say “Thank You” to the people that have been helping us along the way and the Rockhampton Regional Council for their support,” he said. We hope everyone remains well

The Mount Morgan Show Committee will make a decision in June as to whether or not it will go ahead and this largely depends on whether prolonged restrictions are put in place by the Federal Government.

This includes public events and activities scheduled at the Rockhampton Library, Rockhampton Art Gallery, Heritage Village, Schotia Place, Bauhinia Place and other facilities. Discussions will take place with our veteran community to ensure an appropriate response on ANZAC Day. The Agricultural Show in June has also been cancelled and Council will keep a watching brief on other Council organised events or events held at Council facilities in June. For community groups or clubs who lease Council owned facilities or venues, they are to determine whether or not their events will go ahead, so long as they comply with the Federal Government’s restrictions. As of Thursday, you will be able, and indeed encouraged, to borrow double the number of items from Rockhampton Regional Libraries and can do so for a longer period of time. This means, up to 40 books

can be borrowed for a period of six weeks and online renewal is available for a further six weeks. Council also has a substantial business continuity plan in place to make sure that essential community services continue and has charged the incoming council to consider an economic stimulus package early in the new term. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other colds and flus and include: o Fever o Sore throat o Cough o Fatigue o Difficulty breathing While coronavirus is of concern, it is important to remember that most people displaying these symptoms are likely suffering with a cold or other respiratory illness – not coronavirus. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses known to cause respiratory infections. These can range from the common cold to more serious diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). This new coronavirus originated in Hubei Province, China and the disease caused by the virus is named COVID-19. The Australian Government 24-hour hotline for COVID-19 questions is : 1800 020 080. ANNUAL RODEO POSTPONED With the recent Federal Government announcement placing a ban on all non-essential gatherings over 500 people, the Mount Morgan Rodeo, will not be held during the 2020 Golden Mount Festival weekend. The Mount Morgan Rodeo was first established in 2014. Its acting committee consists of 25 dedicated volunteers that enforce a family bond with one other, includes many life members. They unite continue to bring ongoing events to the township of Mount Morgan. The group relies mainly on their own fundraising efforts to help maintain every successful event they hold. Approximately 1200 spectators riders pass through the Mount Morgan Showgrounds gates every May Rodeo. Riders come from all over Queensland to participate in the events. The Rodeo, when held will still provide good family entertainment, the best Rodeo Burgers you will ever sink your teeth into, icy cold beers for those who wish to indulge. Fun live entertainment happens all day long. There’s comedy, there’s full on dust flying action from 10.00 am right through until 6.00 pm. Hopefully, later this year, the Rodeo will host trade stalls from local community groups and sponsors, as well as there being some hilarious performances in the ring. The committee are currently continuing to lock in sponsors for 2020, as we receive those, we’ll keep you posted.

Thank-you to all of our sponsors. Without your ongoing support there would be no Mount Morgan Rodeo. This year we had planned to compete in the Golden Mount Festival’s Running the Cutter event, however, we will now have 12 months to train for the 2021 Golden Mount Festival. The Association had also planned to enter into the procession, but again, we will have to wait for 2021. We send out a huge thank-you to Rockhampton Farm and Garden, for donating a brand new Husqvarna Chainsaw valued at $249. The chainsaw will be up for grabs next week. You can purchase a raffle ticket from our local Mount Morgan Hot Bread Shop. Much thanks to owner Terri at the Bakery, for allowing us to showcase our next raffle in her shop window. Cheers! We have something else very exciting to share. This year, all 2020 Rodeo winners will receive prize money a stunning Benchmark Buckle, supplied by Lane Frost Australia. These buckles have been very kindly donated by the Country Club for Accommodation. The Ladies Barrel Race winner will receive a beautifully designed Bangle. We hope to share some photos of the buckles and bangles in a future Argus issue. Remember to keep your eyes out for a new date and in the meantime, keep it country folks! THE ORANGE DOT By Larry at Fox Video

Movie Review THE NAME OF THE ROSE First printed in 1980, THE NAME OF THE ROSE has sold over 50 million copies, making it one of the best-selling books ever published. Having received many international awards and accolades, it was first made into a film in 1986, starring Sean Connery, F. Murray Abraham, Christian Slater and Ron Perlman (we’re trying to track down a copy for your local video store). Now, to give it the full and complete treatment its genius deserves THE NAME OF THE ROSE has been made into a miniseries starring John Turturro and Rupert Everett. Franciscan Friar, William of Baskerville is known for his unmatched powers of observation, his brilliant and enlightened mind and his uncanny knack of solving puzzles, riddles and problems of all kinds. And so it was he who was called upon in 1327 to solve a deadly and extremely puzzling mystery at a medieval Benedictine Abbey in Northern Italy. The Franciscans have travelled to the meet up with emissaries from the Pope and engage in a

major theological debate on the poverty of Christ and the wealth of the church. This particular Benedictine Abbey was chosen as it is famous throughout all of Christendom for its cavernous, labyrinthine library which is stuffed to overflowing with ancient texts and books from all over the known world (including illegal pagan scripts), and which can only be accessed by especially trained librarian monks. Others who have entered the library without authorization and special guides have become lost within its bowels and never seen again. Alongside the library, the abbey is also renowned for its Scriptorium where highly trained monk scribes and fine artists translate and/or illuminate (embellish with gold or silver and miniature artworks) the ancient books and texts. The Abbot seeks help from William of Baskerville, much celebrated for his deductive powers, when the monk Adelmo of Otranto, a young but accomplished and wellregarded manuscript illustrator, is suspiciously found dead on a hillside at the base of an abbey tower with only one window high above the ground - a window which cannot be opened... Reluctantly, William is drawn in by

the intellectual challenge, if only to quell the fears and rumours running rife of a demonic culprit from the depths of Hades. If William can’t solve this mystery there is also a very real risk that the Abbot will summon officials of The Inquisition, in itself a nightmare that he has only recently freed himself from. But then missing...

THE NAME OF THE ROSE is a mini-series (it has a beginning and an ending), it is rated M for “mature themes, violence and nudity” and it runs for six hours and forty-five minutes (and even then I did not want it to end). The atmospherics, the brain teasers, the intrigues of the Vatican, the terror and injustices of The Inquisition; and of course this brilliant cast - THE NAME OF ROSE... Loved it!

The money was handed to the Red Cross in Iceland to benefit the Red Cross in Australia. Page 6

Pride in Your Town Can you remember all the Water Dams we had in Mount Morgan in by gone days? We thought that with the dry spell we have experienced, a refresher would not hurt. Water has always been a problem for Mount Morgan and when the Mount Morgan Mine first started production they built dams, Nos. one, two and three. All three of these small dams were from the Meyenberg crossing downstream to Tipperary Point. They disappeared no doubt in later years when floods occurred. Then came the building of No four dam. This dam wall was built behind what was then the Power house (later, that building became the Assay office). That Dam was often referred to as the Electric light dam because its water supplied the early Power House. (Of little interest - I had my first fishing experience from that dam wall at a very tender age, and nearly fell in the dam when I caught my first turtle. No modern fishing gear, just a stick with a piece of string, with the hook on the end. How fishing has advanced.)

that had been purchased from a relocated sugar mill near Maryborough. In later years, 1999, funding was made available and the No seven dam wall was heightened by 4.5 meters and now serves as our domestic water supply, as well as our popular picnic and fishing grounds. It remained unfilled until 22 November, 2000 when water flowed over the wall for the first time. At this time all dams except No seven, have had most of the walls removed to allow the river to be free flowing, thankfully by leaving the ends of the dams remaining they have preserved a little of our history. It will be a lovely sight when our No seven dam is full once again, may the rains come soon…especially at Struck Oil. oo-000-oo 10 Simple things to Remember. 1. Love is why we are here.

2. The most important day is today. 3. If you always do your best, you will not have regrets. 4. In spite of your best efforts, some things are out of your control. 5. Things always look better tomorrow. 6. Sometimes a wrong turn will bring you exactly to the right place. 7. Sometimes when you think the answer is “no”, it’s “not yet”. 8. True friends share your joy, see the best in you, and support you through the challenges. 9. God and your parents will always love you. 10. For all your accomplishments, nothing will bring you more happiness than the love you find. Think Clean…..Be tidy.

In 1888, near Meyenberg crossing No five dam was built and it was breached in the 1890 flood and then on the right end a wing was built six foot higher so that would not happen again. This dam at that time was the largest dam in the colony and held a capacity of fifteen million gallons. Then came a patch of dry weather and no six dam was built behind the football grounds and was completed in 1894, however remained almost empty for a couple of years. No six A, a smaller dam was built further upstream holding back some of the Dairy Creek waters. Then in 1902 our famous No seven dam was built (fondly called The Big Dam) but again remained dry until 1904. During these dry years water was railed from Rockhampton in 10,2000 gallon tanks 18 March - 1 April 2020

folk. If anyone can help me with any information about aircraft flying into the showground’s please let me know. I know in the early 1900s pilots that owned air craft would travel around Australia (and the World), staying in country

towns and taking folk for joyrides. This was the way they earned money to keep their planes in the air. I have heard stories that some famous pilots flew into Mount Morgan, please call me on 0411 073 974 if you know anything, Submitted by Graeme Meade

The ride starts at 3.00 pm from 113 East Street, Mount Morgan; that’s the Collectables and Memories shop. We will cover about ten to twelve kilometres with about six or seven stops. Anyone is welcome to join us, while old bikes are preferred any bike is ok. The ride is child friendly, and although there are some hills to navigate this year, they can be walked up, but check your brakes because what goes up must come down. The ride will finish about 5.30 pm. Following the ride we will meet up at the Leichhardt Hotel for a cool drink and dinner. If you see the riders, give them a wave they are a friendly bunch of

POLICE NEWS

It’s unfortunate that the 2020 Golden Mount Festival had to be cancelled. However, the health and safety of the members of the community has to come first. We have school holidays at the beginning of April. Ensure you plan for the increased traffic on our roads and remember the main contributors to traffic crashes (fatal five) - Speeding, intoxication (drugs and/or alcohol), failure to wear a seat belt, driver fatigue and distraction. Don’t become a statistic and don’t think it won’t happen to you. We are continuing to see some violence occurring within families and between friends. If you cannot see the damage your behaviour and words are doing, then perhaps look to the younger generation that are witnessing this behaviour. How do you want to be remembered? Do you want your kids to grow up and act in this way? Possibly remember these words next time you want to say or do something hurtful – Be careful with your words. Once they are said, they can only be Page 8

forgiven, not forgotten. When we are consumed by anger, very rarely can we see past the immediate need to satisfy our own desire to hurt someone else. Take a breath and walk away. It takes a strong person to do this. If you need to speak with the Police or report a crime that isn’t happening now, ring Policelink on 131 444. Always ring 000 if you are in immediate danger. The Mount Morgan Police Station number is 49 323 939 and our front counter is usually open 9.00 am to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday. Mount Morgan Police

TRIBUTE

Mr. Oswald A Wilson. Ossie, as he was affectionately known by his work mates and staff, recently passed away in Yeppoon at 92 years of age. Ossie joined Mount Morgan Limited in 1952 as a metallurgist and rose through the ranks to Chief Metallurgist and then Manager of Operations, (General Manager). He held this position from 1974 until his retirement in 1982. Those years were very difficult in both the economy and mining operations. During his life in Mount Morgan, Ossie married local lass Patricia (Barker) and they produced three boys and two girls. All children started their primary schooling in the Mount Morgan Catholic School, which is no longer operating. His wife, Patricia now resides in a Home in Yeppoon. Ossie will be fondly remembered by many employees who worked with Ossie during his years at Mount Morgan.

ART SQUAD Researcher searches for history of PAINTS CUBE Mount Morgan High Rugby League This year marks the centenary of structured interschool rugby league competition in the Rockhampton area and the Rockhampton District Secondary Schools Rugby is preparing a history. Local researcher, Robert Brodie, says teams from “the Mount” played a very important role in establishing secondary school football in the area. “Mount Morgan High played interschool football (then rugby union) in its foundation year, 1912 and later featured in the very first interschool rugby league game played in Central Queensland, a match against CBC which took place in July, 1918.”

The Morning Bulletin – Saturday 4th July, The RDSSRL is particularly interested in finding out about a game played on 5 July 1953, a curtainraiser between Mount Morgan High and CBC played in front of a packed crowd at the Union Grounds (Browne Park) before the biggest game of the year, the visiting American All Stars V Central Queensland. If the average age of the boys who played the curtain-raiser in 1953 was around 15, they would be in their early 80s today. Unfortunately, The Morning Bulletin reports of the time didn’t list the schoolboys players or the result so little of the curtain-raiser game.

Mount Morgan’s No 7 Gallery’s Art Squad has been busy painting a cube, made by the Mount Morgan Men’s Shed. The cube when finished will be an installation at the Rocky River Festival (if it’s not cancelled). The finished art work will represent our unique hinterland between the ocean and the outback. Page 14

The RDSSRL would love to hear from anyone who attended MMHS in the early 1950s and who might remember some of the players of the era or who remembers anything about the game. Please phone or email the Argus for RDSSRL contact details. Please note that Mount Morgan No. 7 Gallery will continue to function as normal and the openings planned will be held, unless otherwise notified.

DEE RIVER OLDIES Members had a big day out on Doug’s Mystery Bus Trip on Saturday, 7 March. We left the bus stop in Mount Morgan at 9.00 am. Where were we going, that’s why it’s a mystery tour? When we turned right at the corner of Morgan and Central Streets, we knew we were heading north. We travelled down Razorback, and Moongan, then stopped at the Kabra Hotel where we enjoyed a lovely morning tea. When we left there, the choice was either to go east or west. Yes, we were now heading towards Rockhampton. Bets were on whether we were going to the beach or heading north. As we stayed in the left hand lane through Rockhampton, we knew we were heading north! We continued on past the Historical Village, through the roadworks which was a massive job, and then turned in at The Caves Country Pub. We went past the pub then onto the Capricorn Caves. We only had a look from the bus, as we were biding time and were due back to The Caves Country Pub for lunch. Here we enjoyed a drink and had a tasty roast meal for lunch. Bevan Leigh and Chris Izzard won the raffle prizes. Leaving The Caves we travelled home via the scenic route, taking in the sights along the way. We missed the heavy rain as it mostly went around us. A big thank you to the staff at the Kabra Hotel and The Caves Pub for their hospitality. Thanks also goes to Doug, the bus driver and Rob for a great day with a difference and for getting us home safely. See ‘Save the Date’ on the back page of the Argus for upcoming meeting and morning tea times. Come along and put your ideas on the agenda. Until next time stay happy and healthy.
