The Mount Morgan Post Office is NOT closing: It has come to our attention that there has been a major misunderstanding with part of our column last week Pride in Your Town, Issue 3, 2014. We would like to clarify that the Mount Morgan Post Office is not closing. The information included in last fortnight’s column was aimed at highlighting changes that have and continue to take place in life as a result of changing trends and/or advances in technology. This column discussed some of the things we take for granted, and some of the possible changes that could arise as a result of our continuous changing. This information was not directed at the local Post Office in any way nor was it disregarding the value of this business to our community. Furthermore, we also acknowledge the fact that businesses have the ability to adapt with this continuous change. We, the Pride in your Town writers together with the producers of the Argus apologise for any inconvenience this misinterpretation may have caused. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With our Festival weekend just around the corner maybe it is time we started planning to have our town (especially Morgan Street), our paths and gardens all ready for our visitors. Being the proud town, we do need to show a great image - so it is better to plan now instead of a mad rush so close to the event. Always Think Clean – Be Tidy. Use the Bins.
How wonderful that the organisation (QCWA) is still functioning today. It is a wonderful achievement and congratulations to all ladies for their dedication over so many years. Thirdly, Mount Morgan Limited acquired the land and building at the corner of Morgan and East streets (formerly owned by James Stewart and Company). After the war, the building became a single men’s quarters for displaced personas from Central Europe. Later it was home to the Mount Morgan Amateur Players who staged many enjoyable plays for locals’ enjoyment. Section was then given to many organisations but at the present time it is our excellent historical Museum. Without a doubt the most important event of 1950 was the first “Back to Mount Morgan Week” that was held from June 3rd to 11th. People travelled from all over Australia and some from New Zealand to join in. The original committee comprised 26 members, both young and old and it was presided over by Mr George Mullins and the hard working Miss Nessie Chardon was the Secretary. Both Mr Mullins and Miss Chardon were two of the most valued people for their support and loyalty to Mount Morgan over many years. The week was one of happiness and enjoyment for everyone with numerous varied attractions on the program. This was the beginning of an era urging locals to return to their home town for various celebrations in future years. One of our “Pride in your Town” members was on that committee (at an early age of course) and for her efforts and involvement her supervisor granted her “one half day” off work to be present at a function. She could choose which half day she preferred. How life has changed!
Once more we return to our snippets of local history and the year is 1950. It was a year of many memorable happenings. Firstly we saw the Red Cross Blood Bank established at the local hospital with the convenor being Mrs Agnes Sheil, wife of the manager of the Mine at that time. Then, the Mount Morgan branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association was formed with Mrs Brian Lennon, wife of the Chief Metallurgist at the Mine in those years.

When local resident Steven Cooper headed to an “awards presentation” last Saturday, he never expected it would be himself heading home with the award at the evening’s end. But then, he also had no idea he had been chosen as the latest recipient of the surprise local celebration This is your Night. Heading into the Hotel’s Bistro, an unsuspecting Steven believed he was about to join in on a presentation of an award, which a friend of his was about to receive. He soon realised that the guests had other plans in mind however, when he was greeted by over 50 of his closest family members and friends applauding his entrance. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to this is your night,” were the words over the microphone. “A very special welcome to our guest of honour – Mr Steven Cooper.” The introduction continued: “... This is your Night was created by the Ricks Family of local business, “Feel Good Promotions” in 2011. With the assistance of the Grand Hotel, these evenings have recognised the achievements of individuals who have and continue to selflessly and passionately dedicate their time to the Mount Morgan area. “Steve, you have been chosen as one such individual. Unbeknownst to you, some of your closest family and friends have been busily arranging tonight’s event for some time...” The astonished local was then taken on a trip down memory lane, as the evening paid tribute to some of his early years in Mount Morgan. The words highlighted Steven’s commitment and continued enthusiasm for the local area, with special highlight was given to his past and recent local fundraising efforts and his dedication to the Mount Morgan Hospital and its patients.
Further highlights of Steven’s community efforts were made through speeches given by his family and friends, as well as special guests Councillors Cherie Rutherford and Ellen Smith. In honour of his efforts, Steven was presented with a This is your Night Book; compiled by his friends, and presented by local resident, Mark Ricks. Serving as a keepsake from the evening and a reminder of his local dedication, the book was a compilation of photographs, letters and a program of the evening, Steven was also presented with the This is your Night plaque by Grand Hotel manager, Teneille Driver. The plaque is found at the entrance of the Grand Hotel’s Bistro, and is engraved with Steven’s name, as well as the evening’s two former recipients – Del Rowley and Brian Glover. The special evening also included a sit down meal for the guests, and was concluded with a special slideshow presentation. Discussing the night, Steven said: “It was a big surprise.” “I never had the slightest idea that it was being organised. “No one let on at all. They actually kept something from me,” he laughed. Community shows their appreciation for local service More than $500 has been donated to the Mount Morgan Multipurpose Health Service, thanks to a local fundraiser and the generosity of the Mount Morgan community.
A total of $577 was presented to the Hospital’s staff at the end of the evening. The sum will go toward assisting the local aged care and palliative care services.
The sum was raised through a community dance, held at the Community Services Hall on Saturday, February 8th.

The event was arranged by local residents, Dennis and Marie Johnson, in an effort to show their appreciation for the much valued local service. “We have held a few fundraisers in the past and decided that we really wanted to do something to show our gratitude to the Mount Morgan Hospital and its staff,” Dennis said. “We are incredibly lucky to have a local hospital, it’s definitely a valuable thing for this town.” The evening welcomed around 40 people; with local individuals and businesses eager to show their support. “A big thanks goes to all who came along on the night,” Dennis said. “A sincere thank you also to the Grand Hotel, the Leichhardt Hotel, The White Elephant Burger Bar, the Golden Bite Cafe and IGA Mount Morgan for their donations and support.”
Red Frog staff member gets set to lop locks There is a countdown on at the Red Frog for Early Childcare Education, and it isn’t just for early education purposes. The team is marking off the days until March 13th, when one of their staff will “be brave and shave”, in an effort to raise funds for cancer research and prevention.
For those interested in sponsoring Marissa, donations can be made at the Red Frog (receipts given, with donations more than $2 tax deductible). Donations can also be made online, by searching “Marissa Brady” at the Be Brave and Shave website.
“I have quite a few friends who are in remission for breast cancer and we currently have a friend – close friend’s daughter is currently going through breast cancer for the second time,” Marissa Brady said on her inspiration to see her lops locked. “I decided to get involved in the Shave for a Cure for this reason, and to try and raise funds toward research to find a cure.” Although a little nervous, Marissa said she is excited to see funds raised. “ I’m a little nervous. I think mainly just by the idea of having no hair at all but it’s an absolutely worthy cause. “I have a friend going through chemo so we can be no hair buddies together.” Marissa is set to be brave and do the shave at the Red Frog, at 9:30am on Thursday, March 13th. All are welcome to attend on the morning.

Mount Morgan Central welcomes 2014 Student Leaders Mount Morgan Central’s Weekly Parade on Tuesday 19 February took on extra significance with Student Captains, Vice Captains, Councillors and House Captains being acknowledged and inducted as the Student Leadership Team for 2014. Joining students, staff and parents were special guests, P&C President Kerri Ward and Rockhampton Regional Council Deputy Mayor, Councillor Tony Williams.

This year’s Student Leadership is unique in that it includes both Year Six and Year Seven students. From 2015, year seven will be part of High School across Queensland. Mount Morgan State High School turns 102 Students and staff of Mount Morgan State High have ushered in the new education year with a celebration for their local School.
The morning was concluded with the cutting of the birthday cake, which was carried out by Dylan Forbes, Tyler Toby, Shellby Evans and Thea Hayes.
A special parade was held earlier this month in recognition of Mount Morgan High’s 102nd birthday.

The event was conducted by the Certificate II in Business Class, and paid tribute to the school and a number of its key activities since opening in February, 1912. Along with readings by the senior students, the morning included a speech by the event’s special guest, Miss Irene Sturgess; school patron, and former student, teacher and Senior Mistress for Mount Morgan High. Miss Sturgess took guests on an entertaining journey to Mount Morgan High’s earlier years through her address. Particular highlight was given to the former sporting ventures of the school, even including wording of the early sports day war cries.

Mount Morgan State High School Leadership Induction On Monday 17th February 2014, we were proud to announce and induct our 2014 Leadership Team and Student Representative Council members. We proudly inducted School Captains, Nicholas Stock and Billi Jansen, as well as School Vice Captain, Whitney Tull. We also inducted House Captains for Kendall, Kaylee Roberts and Kealie Traynor-Oates (absent), House Captain for Paterson, Sammy Snarr and House Captains for Gordon, Lisa Ferguson and Chynna Williams. Also joining the leadership team were School Leaders, Tameeka Long, Jasmine Rowe and Constance Whittingham. On the day the High School also presented badges to students of the Representative Council. These students completed nomination forms and were endorsed by a member of staff to represent their respective year levels. Year 8 – Morgan James, Zane Smith and Shellby Evans, Year 9 – Jessica Grange, Year 10 – Jaiden Standen, Taliah Reid and Jewel Dolan, Year 11 – Cole Court. As a school we are very proud of each student and the commitment they have shown in undertaking a role in 2014 and wish them every success for the year ahead. Vivi’s remarkable story In a world of technology, we are provided with information on an immediate and very regular basis. From online news articles to Youtube videos, there’s a plethora of information available at our fingertips 24 hours a day. Wading through this information, we at times come across a few snippets or headlines that jump out at us grabbing our attention and seeing us go in search of more information. Recently, this occurred on a local level during a checkup of Facebook, at the Argus office. We came across a link that was being shared by a number of Mount Morgan residents, in support of a fellow local and her family. The posts gave a brief insight into Mount Morgan resident, Kimberly Watts, and the current struggle her granddaughter, Vivi, together with her family, are facing. Some would remember both Kimberly and Vivi from a previous issue of the Argus, when a photo of the two was included in our “Congratulations” section of the publication – congratulating Kimberly and husband David on becoming grandparents for the first time. Since that time, there have been a number of challenges for the family’s beautiful bundle of joy, with most recently – a very rare diagnosis. We caught up with Kimberly and her daughter Kelly (Vivi’s mother) earlier this month to learn more of Vivi’s story and perhaps provide assistance in seeing it shared. At just 18 months of age, Vivi already has an incredible story. It’s one that could be described as both heartfelt and hopeful. When Vivienne (or lovingly dubbed ‘Vivi’) was born, she was brought home by parents, Kelly and Konrad weighing less than 2kg. For Kelly and Konrad, the joy of their first baby was quickly overshadowed by worry – as their newborn daughter encountered a number of health challenges. This resulted in countless interstate trips to doctors for the Darwin residents, followed by a stream of tests, all in search of answers. The test results revealed that while in the womb, Vivi’s skull had formed too quickly, triggering a number of complications. Vivi underwent skull reconstructive surgery 7 months ago, at a little over one year of age. Despite Vivi’s surgery being a success, she has continued to battle multiple health issues. “She has particularly struggled to gain weight and muscle, meaning that she is incapable of independent movement at 18 months,” Kelly explained. “Until recently we had almost gone out of our minds trying to figure out the cause of all of her seemingly unrelated problems.” Following continued tests, the family has recently received the reasoning for Vivi’s struggles. Kelly said a geneticist diagnosed the cause of Vivi’s troubles as the result of ‘a non-inherited chromosomal interstitial micro deletion’ – or put more simply, where part of a chromosome or sequence of DNA is missing. “Finally, we don’t need to keep searching for a diagnosis, as the micro deletion itself is Vivienne’s diagnosis,” Kelly said.
“She is one of only four children in the world documented as having this condition.” The diagnosis comes as both a blessing and a blow for the family. “There is no cure. However, we have some options available to us in terms of therapy,” Kelly said. The treatment includes neural pattern and plasticity therapy. The family of three is currently in the United States undertaking the first of what is expected to be numerous visits. “We will have to travel multiple times overseas (UCLA Centre and Poland specialist camp) as the therapy Vivienne needs is not yet offered here in Australia,” Kelly said. Kelly has recently quit her position as a student doctor at RDH to be Vivienne’s full-time carer. For the couple, the future treatments for Vivi are expensive and yet unquestionable. “Both my husband, Konrad, and myself would rather go completely broke and live in a cardboard box rather than not offer Vivi the best chance at being able to live her life to the fullest,” Kelly said. “We have received advice that this therapy, if undertaken between the 0-3yrs age bracket, it could make a world of difference to the future Vivi experiences – like the ability to walk with assistance. So there really is no question other than to do what we can and just have faith that the rest will be provided.” In aim of seeing this occur, Kelly and Konrad’s friends have assisted with the creation of an online donation account (fundly account) – allowing interested individuals to support the family. “A close friend of mine suggested we create a fundly account just to see what happened. “She truly cares about us and thought that people would reach out to us.” And she wasn’t wrong. “So far the support has been incredible,” Kelly said. At present, the fundly account has seen the support of 56 followers, and $4,700 donated towards an estimated $30,000 the family faces in medical and travel costs. The Mt Morgan Golden Mount Festival Committee is busy once again preparing for this year’s festival - and have chosen a “comedy” theme as part of the iconic event. This annual event celebrates Mount Morgan and its rich heritage and this year is being held from the 02nd to the 04th of May, 2014.
Saturday will also include a street parade and lots of stalls/ markets, amusement rides, guest artists/performers, street theatre, workshops, and Classic Car and Hot Rod display.

The evening will also include amusement rides, fire twirling, stalls and the release of floating wishing candles across the water before the fireworks to top off the night. 3rd May - Saturday - our traditional events such as the Running of the Cutter” and “Dig for Gold” will be up and running and we hope to attract some worthy competitors.

In the lead up, two of our hardworking members, Nicholai and Greg, are willing to train all those interested in becoming involved. Hi Argus readers, Well, it has been another busy fortnight in the Mount. Congratulations to the 2014 school captains and senior leaders for both Mount Morgan State High and Mount Morgan Central State School! A big congrats also to local resident, Steven Cooper who was the latest recipient of “This is your Night” (as seen on page 3 of this issue). It was great to attend this evening and join in on celebrating Steve’s contribution to the local community. Speaking of community contributions, don’t forget that next month nominations open for the 2014 Mount Morgan Pride in your Town Community Awards. This year’s awards will again see nine categories – which aim to recognise our inspiring local individuals, hardworking volunteers, green thumbs, artistic talents, skilled sportspeople and much loved local businesses/ organisations. Nomination forms will be available from our website (www.mountmorgan.org.au) and the Rail Complex from the first week of March. Trivia night! Another project that we’ll be kicking off next month will be our first trivia night for the year! As mentioned in last fortnight’s update, we’re teaming up with the Mount Morgan Rugby Union Club for this event and are aiming to raise funds for the local club, as well as the 2014 fish restocking of the Dam. Come along and join us on Friday the 28th of March – 7pm, at the School of Arts Hall. It’s sure to be another great night – with tasty snacks, a light supper, cash prizes and of course... some questions guaranteed to get you thinking and laughing. Mt Morgan Arts & Craft Market Day The members of the Mount Morgan Arts & Craft Group propose to hold their first Market Day at the School of Arts, Morgan Street on Saturday 15 March between 9.00am and 1.00pm. There is a wealth of talent in the Arts and Craft Group and they are looking forward to displaying their wares and invite everyone to come along. Stalls will be set up with items for sale. Morning tea will be available for a small fee and there will be a raffle drawn on the day. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to a Mount Morgan charity. It is intended that this market will be held every 2 months on the 3rd Saturday. President, Carol Wrage said that it is the aim of the Market to showcase home made and home grown wares and anyone interested in setting up a stall can contact Heather on 4934 0604 or Pam on 4938 1467 or email yormap@westnet.com.au.
Big things for Little Athletics March is looking to be an exciting month for the team of Gracemere Little Athletics. The upcoming weeks are set to include a visit to Cairns for a number of our athletes who will be competing in the IGA State Championships. Among those to compete is Mount Morgan local, William Piacentini (pictured), who qualified for the Regional championships in Gin Gin last September. He qualified in short hurdles, long jump, triple jump discus, and javelin and will compete with his team mates from Gracemere Athletics over the weekend of March 21-23. William has been with our team for four years, and is one of four Mount Morgan locals to make up our team of aspiring athletes. Next month will also see the annual sign on for Gracemere Little Athletics. If you are interested in signing up or would simply like to know more about becoming involved, feel free to join us for this event. by Trish & Greg Mathers To feed or not to feed – that is a really big question when it comes to native animals... The answer is no, you really should not feed them- for the following reasons: - Babies need to learn how to identify and find their own food. A juvenile will rarely stay in the territory of its parents once it matures, and it needs to be fully able to feed itself on wild food – not handouts. - The animals can become too reliant on supplements and can and do starve, often to death, if you are away or sick etc. and unable to feed them. They will lose the ability to source out their own food (a lorikeet for example needs nectar from around 1200 flowers each day). - The chances of you feeding them a correct diet is very slim. Never give native animal and birds bread – they will fill up on it and won’t eat their correct diet and become nutrient deficient; it also causes a lot of digestive problems. - Unless you keep the feed area scrupulously clean, the chances are you will be spreading disease. It is rare for birds and animals to congregate heavily in one area in the wild. - Bird seed must be kept dry – once it gets wet unless it dries off almost immediately a type of mould starts growing. This affects the brain of the birds and they will literally fall out of the sky in their dozens, dropping down dead!

Having said all this though, if you have been feeding them then you can’t just stop. You must reduce the amount little by little till they are again self-sufficient. There are times however when they need a bit of assistance – severe drought or bushfires, or when they are sick or injured are examples. You are far better off placing out nice fresh water daily. You will still have the visitors and are not harming them. I have included 2 photos below of Channel-Bill Cuckoo chicks. They are almost the same age. The one on the top right was raised by a member of the public. The one on the bottom right was raised by a wildlife carer. There is a huge difference in the condition of these two birds. It is always better to seek advice from a person with experience. Channel – Bill Cuckoo adults migrate north this month (Feb) to New Guinea and beyond. The chicks follow about a month later.

News from Multipurpose Health Service Flu Vax: It is that time of the year again. People wishing
to have their flu vax are asked to contact the Hospital on 4912 5100 (8am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday) to have their name/s added to the list. The actual date and times are not finalised as yet, however all clients on the list will be contacted as soon as possible.
Parking: The hospital has two car parking areas. The
rear car park is for service vehicles, hospital vehicles and ambulances only. All hospital and GP clinic clients are asked to utilise the main car park. Clients who require assistance with wheelchairs or mobility are asked to phone ahead – advising of an arrival time, or phone on arrival and request assistance. A member of staff will be able to assist if necessary, or a wheelchair will be provided upon request. If you have concerns about accessing the carpark / hospital please feel free to contact us for more information or to make alternative arrangements. Thank you: Mount Morgan MPHS staff would like to sincerely thank Dennis Johnson and all who assisted in organising the Mount Morgan MPHS fund raising dance which raised over $500.00. This was despite heavy rain making it more difficult for many to attend. The money will be used to assist our most vulnerable such as aged care and palliative care services. New Australian Police Child ID Safety App Available Now: A new smartphone application has been developed to help Australian parents provide information to police in an attempt to locate their children if they go missing. The Australian Police Child ID App was adapted from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Child ID App in the United States. This collaborative effort has seen the Australian Federal Police (AFP) create a tool that will help parents and guardians more easily collect and send important information about their child/children to authorities in the event of a disappearance or abduction. The application allows families to store photographs and vital information about their children on their mobile phone. In the devastating event that a child goes missing, this information can be immediately provided to authorities. While the vast majority of children who go missing are quickly returned safely, usually within 24 hours of going missing, the application can be used to quickly provide crucial information to police, assisting them to expedite their search. The application also includes safety advice and checklists for parents on keeping children safe, information about what to do in the hours immediately after a child goes missing and provides quick and efficient access to emergency contact phone numbers. Available at no cost for Android and iPhone users, the application can be downloaded now: Anyone with information relating to a missing child should contact their local police or contact National Missing Persons Coordination Centre on 1800 000 634 or email missing@afp.gov.au.

Between 2014 and 2018, Australia will commemorate the ANZAC Centenary – recognizing 100 years since Australia’s involvement in World War I. In recognition of this event, we are looking to introduce a special display at the Mount Morgan Historical Museum. We are currently seeking interest from members of the community who would be interested in having some of their personal, relevant items on exhibition. Bacon & Egg Salad
I know I can hear you all saying “Mick’s loss the plot nowBacon and Egg Salad”... but here is one that works well as a stand alone meal or as part of a picnic lunch. It’s my take on a bacon & eggs which I flip on its head and spin around. and end up with this very taste Bacon and Egg salad. It is a lovely way to use eggs and bacon that is not so greasy. Please give it a go. I hope you like this one as much as I did making it.
Shopping list: • 500g bacon rashers • 6 eggs •1 cup of coarsely chopped dill pickles (gherkins) • 2 tablespoons of liquor from the dill pickles bottle • 1 ½ cups of homemade mayonnaise (store bought is okay like Miracle - whipped) • 1 teaspoon mild curry powder • 2 teaspoons of Australian mustard • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley • 1 clove crushed garlic • white pepper & salt to taste
How to make it:
Firstly, boil your 6 eggs - you need them hard boiled. I do eggs in cold tap water. 6 minutes after the boil is reached, turn off heat and run cold tap water over eggs and peel shell away. I chill the boiled eggs for 30 minutes. While that’s cooling down, you can get on cooking up by sautéing bacon until brown but not crispy. Now, mix up the mayo with the pickled liquor, curry powder, the Australian mustard, parsley, garlic and salt/pepper all together. Now, cut up dill pickles coarsely. Chop up 3 of the eggs, and the other 3 eggs cut in half. Now I hold back some bacon for garnish. The rest of the fried bacon goes into a large bowl. Add the coarsely chopped eggs and dill pickles. Add ¾ of the mayo salad dressing: combine all together. Now to serve - I place all of the Egg and Bacon Salad into a nice serving bowl. Place the left over ¼ of the mayo salad dressing on top in the center of the egg salad. Now arrange the eggs yolk side up. Garnish with the left over bacon. Your Bacon & Egg Salad is ready to go. It will hold in the fridge for a couple of days. We like it served on toast as a quick and easy dinner and we also enjoy serving it as part of a very romantic picnic lunch with a nice fruity Moscato or an icy green tea.

Uniquely Strange by Heather Quarry “Why would you live in the middle of a mountain?” is what so often has been said to me. “Open your eyes, your ears and your minds and for yourself you will be able to see”. It isn’t just Mount Morgan’s vast history that beckoned my move here to stay. There was a uniquely strange large dinosaur that met me on my very first day. I’ve watched it change its colours and witnessed its move to a new location. Despite many other reasons I decided to stay, the Mount’s dinosaur became my vocation.
